Aperture wont delete masters or versions!
Help! I have aperture 1.5.1 running on a intel core solo mini and there are dozens of files it that won't delete! I select them, Aperture states it will delete the master and version, and then aperture highlights the next image and leaves the old one in tact. Any ideas?
I am getting the following error when trying to add files to the vault. This is a brand new from scratch vault btw.
2 errors occurred. The first 2 are:
Aperture has detected a problem with the vault ‘Untitled Vault’. You need to remove this vault and create a new one.

Deleting masters and versions in Aperture

Hi,

After the dialog box, you should be pressing the <Enter> or <Return> key to confirm, not the <Delete> key. -
Deleting Masters and Versions and pics duplicating as versions
I'm working with a small library of some flower images and had done a 'quick and dirty' auto adjustment and easy rating [4]; then I went back and on the Versions [selected Adjustments are Applied to have only the versions show up in browser] noted some are Rejects [X]. I thought I could then delete the two images, one master and one version.
But, when I go in to delete the Master it just does it = without a warning [I have show warning selected in prefs] - but when I go in to delete a =Version 2 it gives me the Delete Masters Warning....in other words, Aperture is treating Versions like Masters and Masters like Versions.
Also when I go into List view to check things I find Master is [for instance] 9.47mb but so is Version 2 the same size = in other words when I do an adjustment and create a Version it's not just creating small kb size versions via data but is actually duplicating and then applying the adjustment.
These are pics in the library not referenced.
[I'd put a picture here but don't know how and hope my description makes sense]Thanks = I reread it and am thinking of the images in that way. As I tried to explain, In the library were images which I reviewed and made adjustments to [auto adjustment plus rating]. Then I did a filter to show only Versions [in which images that show are where adjustments were applied] so that only Versions would so up, marked some as Rejects with X and planned to delete those but not the masters for them.
When I would go to delete the Version [its name would have Version 2 in it], it was treated as if it was a Master and the Delete Masters warning would come up. But when I would go to delete a Master [not a version] no such warning would come up at all even if there were a version and master associated together.
I went to List view to check and be sure and what I am seeing is that the Master has 9.4 mb in size but the Version which was created by the auto adjustment + rating ends up also with 9.4mb and not just a few K for the data -- so that what appears to me to be happening is that the Master image is, in fact, being duplicated and not just having data changes applied = there is no size differential between the Master and the Version, in other words. -
Hi loaded 3.4.2 and now aperture wont load its just crashed out and then it will say the day base needs repairing which I do but still wont open.

You still seem to have an incompatible version of the "AccountConfigurationPlugin" installed. To solve this, you will need to reinstall Aperture from your original installation media, or if you installed from the AppStore, to completely uninstall it and download again.

Post back, if this fixes it. There have been a few similar crash logs lately, and it would be good to know, if the fix above also worked in your case.

Aperture 2 deletes master with version
Anyone have this problem? I use Aperture 2, I want to delete a version and not the master image, so I go to the drop down and select 'Delete Version' and I get the 'You're about to delete the master and all versions' window instead of the 'You're about to delete the version' window. Both tabs take me to the same window.
Nope, this is what it sounds like. If I try to delete a legit version it wants to throw EVERYTHING away. I've tried reloading the software, etc. but this won't go away. I'm thinking it came in on a update as a bug, but the re-install should have taken care of that...right?

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? -
I have 396 versions in the Aperture trash, but Aperture's deleting 784 versions?
I deleted a bunch of versions along with some masters. The number by the Trash in the inspector indicated there were 396 versions in the trash. I clicked "empty Aperture trash" and expected it to empty as usual, but it seemed to be taking an extra long time. I had the "Activity Monitor" on at the time and, indeed, both the processor and RAM appeared to be maxed. (I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro, 15 inch, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB RAM, running OSX 10.6.8). I waited a while, but it didn't seem to improve. Curious about what progress had been made, I clicked "Show Activity" in Aperture. It showed a status of 10%, soon thereafter, it said "deleting 2 of 784"!!!!! Why would it be deleting nearly twice as many versions as are in the trash? I have never had the "Show Activity" window open before when emptying the trash, so I don't know if this is normal or not, but it had me worried. I wanted to cancel the process and find out if it was normal before continuing, but the "Cancel Task" button in the activity window was greyed out, and therefore, not an option. I waited and waited, all the while worrying about what other versions it was planning on deleting. It seemed to be at a stand-still. There was no spinning beach ball, and I was able to use the cursor, but the Activity Window didn't show any more versions being deleted. I know I'll get criticized for the next few things I did, as I'm sure I probably should not have done them: I decided to try quitting Aperture, since I could find no other way to cancel the task. The progress bar got about half way through and then seemed to stall. Again, I waited and waited and waited. Finally, I reluctantly clicked on "Aperture" in the "Activity Monitor" and then "Quit Process", to force quit the process. I then put the computer to sleep for a while. When I came back, I clicked "restart" to clear the RAM (Activity Monitor indicated about 5 MB of Page Outs--don't ask me what the other stats were, as I don't recall). I opened Aperture to see what would happen. It opened fine. The only immediate noticeable problem is that while the trash still indicates 396 items are in it, no previews show in the window. It is all grey.
My questions are as follows:
1) As asked above: Why would Aperture be deleting 784 versions when only 396 are in the trash?
2) What is the next best step for me to take? I am wanting to delete the 396 versions, but not unknow extras! I can't see what's in the trash.
Thanks, in advance, for any insight.Update: I did an extended hardware test (just in case a hardware issue was causing my problem)--no problems found. I then went through the Aperture troubleshooting steps: I tried repairing permissions first, but I still could not see any of the images that were in the Aperture trash. I then repaired the library. This seems to have fixed things (at least upon initial assessment). Afterward, I was able to see the images that were in the trash. I opened the Activity Window to see what it said when I tried emptying the trash again. This time it said it was deleting exactly the number of images that I expected it to delete (not twice as many this time!), and it emptied lickety split--as I had expected it to do the first time! So, hopefully, all is now well with my system and library. Still wondering why it was telling me it was deleting twice as many images as were in the trash the last time I tried, but overall, much happier today!

Exporting masters and versions
I am trying to export photos from Aperture to an external drive just as jpegs and raws, not as library. So first I exported versions, now I am exporting masters and trying to put them to the same folders (to keep all versions of the same photo together) and it turns out that Aperture gave the same names to masters and versions which makes it impossible to save them to the same folder. Any advice here?...
JaneTsv wrote:
By the way - Aperture creates thousand os versions for the same photo. Is there a way to delete duplicates after exporting (it gives them different names)?
?!? No it doesn't. Where are these thousands of Versions coming from? Are they from 'create new versions when making adjustments' which you can turn off? Are new Versions appearing when you export? This statement doesn't make sense.
JaneTsv wrote:
I see... Looks like apple did their best to keep people from moving from Aperture to other programs...
Step 1. Select all Versions in the Library.
Step 2. Export Versions using a Project Name subfolder format.
Step 3. Export Masters using a Project Name subfolder format.
There is no step 4. That's all there is to it.
You end up with a Finder folder for each Project, containing both the Master files, plus Versions in whatever file format you chose.
If you're having huge problems with lots of duplicate Masters from Aperture exporting a copy for each Version, it's still only a three step process:
Step 1. Select all Versions in the Library.
Step 2. File>Relocate Masters... using the Project Name subfolder format. This will move all the Masters out of the Library package and into a regular folder structure.
Step 3. Export Versions using a Project Name subfolder format into the same top-level folder.
Again, no step 4, you're done.

Too easy to delete Masters by accident?
Hello:
I am sorry if this ultra novice question has been asked and answered numerous times but I couldn't find the answer...
Is the following true:
In Aperture we never see Masters, only versions. One version is automatically created when we import the file.
If we delete the last version the Master is also deleted -- WITHOUT ANY WARNING!
There is no easy way to discover how many versions of a Master are left.
If my understanding is true, then it is astonishingly easy to accidentally delete a Master. That is lunacy! Please tell me that I am wrong!
Thanks,
Jeff StulinThis issue has been discussed here in the past, in fact I had a user tip for this back when user tips were displayed (see Deleting version also deleted the master)
So basically what you are seeing is how Aperture works, as this has been brought to the attention of Apple a number of times in the past they either don't think it's a problem or else that is how Aperture is designed.
As for your item 3 all versions of a master will be in the project that contains the master so seeing if a master has multiple versions isn't a major problem. If you allow Aperture to name your versions then each new version will have Version x attached to the image.
As a last resort each version having the same master will also of course have the same file name, so you could do a search or smart album on that.
Of course as Corky wrote the master first goes into the Aperture trash and from there to the system trash so it takes a lot of work on you're part to really delete the master off the system.
On minor correction to what Corky wrote:
Note - if you deleted a version that is not deleting a Master file, then there won't be any file moved to the Finder trash.
This is not correct. The version you delete will show up in the trash even if there are multiple versions of a master

Aperture wont start when I booted up this morning . There is an upgrade that it needs to install and I am being directed to log onto a hotmail account that does not exist to install it . I cant get any sense out of hotmail and the account has been deleted because I have never used it .
I need to get into my files asap but I am just going around in circles - please help - anyone ?APERTURE was bought via the Apple On Line Store .
I kew there is an update cause when I clicked on updates , there was an update that I needed cause Aperture was not running as it should ie . it would not load
I am running Mavericks OS.
My Apple ID is the same as my email account but I have discovered that I have two Apple ID accounts and I could not remember my password on the one that I used to download the original Aperture - I have since contacted Apple and they have merged the two so Ihave sorted it out that way .
When Aperture would not start , it wasn't asking me to log onto my email account, it was asking me for my Apple ID which was the same thing but it was my emergency ID and I could not remember the password . Being enturely thick where computers are concerned , I got very confused and remain confused because having bought a new MACBOOK AIR , I find it wont recognise my back up hard drive or my AIRPORT so I am not having a great time with MAC products to be honest - cant get my business back up and running after nearly three weeks so Apple and MAC are not my favourite words !
Anyway, I did get it sorted finally by ringing Apple but thanks for replying anyway - it turned out that Aperture was the very least of my problems when my hard drive failed installing Mavericks - wasnt Mavericks fault, my drives have to work hard and it just died . -
How to export both masters and versions w/ metadata?
When traveling I import photo files into Aperture on my laptop and edit them. When I get home I would like to export "everything" - masters, versions, and metadata, so that I can then import all of this into Aperture on my desktop. Or, perhaps there is another way to transfer all of this information into Aperture on my desktop? The export menu seems to give only the option to export either masters or versions, but I want to basically duplicate on my desktop a particular project from my laptop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
You get the option to either add the contents of the being-imported Library to the being-imported-into Library, or to merge the contents. In neither case is the being-imported-into Library replaced.
It is always a good idea to maintain a practice Library of a few hundred images, and to use it to try out any actions you fear might destroy your work.
There is an entire chapter in the User Manaul on using Library files. It is part of the general introduction to Aperture (viz.: the first seven chapters), all of which is recommended reading as it provides the foundation needed to achor your exploration of the rest of this complex, powerful program.
What you want to do is part of that power -- it is specifically provided as a feature of Aperture:
This is particularly useful if you use a portable computer when on location or away from your studio, and a workstation at your studio. Any work done in the field can be exported from your portable computer as a library file and then merged with the library file on the workstation at your studio.
In your case, either export everything ("Export→Project as New Library") from the "field" computer, or simply import the entire "field" Library. The details of the workflow are up to you to determine. They will likely depend on what Images you want to maintain on your "field" computer -- whether that Library is a one-time only collecting basket, or is used for processing or showing Images collected on previous excursions.

Importing Masters and Versions from iPhoto
Is it possible to import both Masters and the associated Adjusted Versions from iPhoto into Aperture 3?
The manual tells how to import the masters into the Aperture library but does not seem to tell how to import the corresponding versions adjusted in iPhoto. In iPhoto all images are masters in a sense. When you adjusted an image in iPhoto a duplicate image was made and the adjustments were done to the duplicate giving you two separate files.
When you import your iPhoto library into Aperture these two files (the original and the adjusted image) are two separate files as far as Aperture is concerned. Aperture will keep them together and apply keywords to each to help you sort it all out once you running the Aperture library but they will not have the same master version relationship that masters and versions created in Aperture have.
So when you import your iPhoto library all images will come over, you don't need to do anything special to get the adjusted images. -
Deleting masters from network drive
I have my masters on a network drive for backup purposes, but when I try to delete them (CMD+backspace), although the references to them get deleted from the project, the originals are still there on the network. This isn't a permissions problem, because I can delete them through the Finder.
How can I get Aperture to actually delete masters on a network drive? Or is this an impossible dream?I have my masters on a network drive for backup

I am thinking this is the way you have it set up:
1) Masters go on Network drive
2) You import masters
3) You work with masters in Aperture
If so, the reason Aperture is not removing the masters on the network drive is that on import it copies the masters into the lirbary and then does not know about them after that. So from that sense your dream is impossible, because Aperture will not touch the masters outside of the Aperture library. -
Aperture 3- Calls Master image version 2 ????
Downloaded the trial of Aperture 3. Started playing around with it and noticed that the master image is being called version 2 and the actual adjusted version is not even labeled as a version. If I create multiple other versions of the image they are being labeled correctly as 3, 4 etc...
This is very odd to me. Possibly a BIG problem when deleting versions. Might end up trashing the master image since it's labeled as version-2.
Anyone else notice this?Thank you both.
Of course I'm still confused though. Thought I knew Aperture, ha!
What I find in Aperture2 is that when I look at my viewer with all versions unstacked there always is one image in the stack that is indeed an image without any adjustments to it (what I thought to be my master). If I try to delete this image I get a warning that I am about to delete a master image.
In Aperture3 I do see what you are saying about them all being versions. I guess the question I have then is that when I do delete all the images in the stack where is my master image? When I turn off the "create new version" preference things seem more 'normal' to me as compared with Aperture2 but I still don't see an unadjusted 'version' of the image like I used to.
In Aperture2 when I had say 4 versions of an image and I didn't want or like any of them I could delete all the versions of an image in a stack and there was the unadjusted image there still viewable. I'd start adjusting away again and then my new version would be created.
There must be some preference somewhere that I'm not seeing to accomplish this all.
Thanks again! I think I've got too many versions of this question in my head.
