Aperture Work flow or an alternative

I am an amateur photographer using a nikon d70. I am now shooting in raw to get a better control on the output, but also with more pictures to process as result. I have used Photoshop elements with ACR for work flow processing. I use iview pro for file handling. Downside of ACR in the PS elements mode is that filmstrip and multiple picture handling is missing. I have tried trial version of Bibble 4, Capture one and PS CS 2 for their workflow and white balance results. I came to the conclusion that PS CS provides in WB adjustment best results with different pictures. As a Mac user I am aware of the aperture features as advertised in their QuickTime movies. I have also seen the discussion on hardware requirements and WB issue. But the aperture work flow setup is tempting (keep the work flow in the raw domain and does not change the original raw file). There are two routes to follow: A. buy full version of PS CS and stay with current hardware. B. buy Aperture with adjusted hardware. Price tags are totally different and are of my own concern. Question: advice on the road to go without price tag consideration.

You could have a workflow that is non-destructive with Photosohp CS2 by using Bridge. It's very effective and will give you more and better control that those other alternatives - except Aperture. I've been using Aperture for two days now and I have to say I'm really getting to like it. Though on my dual 2Ghz G5 (1st generation) with a Radeon 9800 Pro and 3.5 gigs of RAM it can be a tad bit slow. I'm sure some optimization will occur in the next update or two to speed things up.
Bottom line, I think Aperture's workflow looks promising. And I really like a lot of the benefits of working in a totally 16 bit environment where I don't have to manually handle the files and their locations, or the sidecar files or anything else. And I can export files directly for whatever purpose I might have.
So my first choice, for your question would be Aperture. Second choice would be Bridge and PS CS2.

  • Possible work flow Shoot(RAW)-Aperture-CS2-Aperture-output

I have Aperture installed on two machines, my 15" 1.5Ghz/1.5GB-RAM and on my PoweMac dual 2Ghz G5/2 GB RAM and the speed is acceptable on both so far.
On the PowerMac I moved the Aperture library to a second SATA drive, which should speed things up a bit.
I have not had enough time to envelope myself in Aperture, only a hour here and there.... work keeps getting in the way But so far it looks like I could change my workflow.
CS2 cannot be removed from my workflow as I tweak all final images before output(print and jpg/tiff) in CS2. Layers and the healing brush is key in portrait work.
My workflow from shoot to output with D2X has been:
    -Shoot(all RAW)
-FW transfer of files into date+clientname-named directory structure
-Bridge to sort, rank, annotate, etc
-ACR to make adjustments to files, copy and paste raw settings is great as well as synchronize make for quick post processing
-Web gallery is easy enough and IMO looks better than Aperture's
-Shots selected for final output by client are then opened in CS2, tweaked, cleaned, improved, vignettes applied, etc(according to client and contract), then saved off as jpg level 10(rarely as tiff)
--If it is a big or important portrait, I will save a PSD file with the layers etc
-Bridge to annotate the finished shots
-Output to Epson R2400 or lab
-Archive directory with sidecar files to two(just in case!) CD or DVD(depending on size)
While I can see a workflow improvement with Aperture replacing Bridge and ACR, issues I see:
-Aperture RAW conversions are not on par with ACR
-Raw workflow in Aperture is a completely different animal than ACR
-White balance in Aperture is hard to use
-Plugins? Like the vignette tool in ACR to dodge(great for white backgrounds) or burn corners
    Possible pluses so far:
-More control over colors, luminance, etc in Aperture, although at the cost of simplicity(yes, this will diminish over time with more experience)
-The loupe tool is great, when it is too slow on the PB, I just use the "Z" key for toggling 100%..
-Integration of the photo books, although CS2 has something similar from Ofoto
-Stacking(this could be added to Bridge though)
    -Vaults for archiving
-Coolness for being an Apple application(yes it is a cult and yes I joined of my own free will)
So, when 10.4.4 comes out with tweaks to Aperture like RAW conversions being on par with ACR and white balance tool option/fix, I could see Aperture replacing Bridge and ACR in my work flow.
Given my past four years with Apple and one iBook, two Powerbooks, two PowerMacs, one Indigo iMac, all of the OS X versions, and Final Cut Express, I have faith that the Aperture team is working feverishly to get theses initial issues fixed and am certain version two will be even better, AND encourage Adobe to add more wiz to their already great product, PhotoShop.
Tonight I will try this workflow, where I do the RAW conversion, send to CS2, and save back to Aperture....
So much to fiddle with, so little time!

I'd love to hear how this works out for you as your workflow is virtually identical to mine. I haven't devoted much time to Aperture as I'm preparing for an xmas vacation and am hoping a big patch (or two!) are en route.

  • Work Flow + Two External Drives + Aperture -vs- iView MediaPro

    Greetings!
Hoped for end result: 30 GB of photos available at home and office. Freed up hard drive space on MacBook Pro. An organized system for locating photos.
I am seeking to break my old photo workflow paradigm.
Recently, I have moved 30 GB of images from iPhoto to an external drive (actually to two different external drives). I do not plan to use iPhoto in the future (only minimal use). Insights on the following would be appreciated:
    (1) I have two - FreeAgent Pro - hard drives - 750 GB. One at home and the other in my office. The data on both drives (i.e. 30 GB of image) is identical. A GENEROUS amount of space is still available on these external drives. Just completed this process / setting up both identical drives last night ... identical images at the office and home.
    (2) My hoped for outcome is to be able to access my photos at work / home and have some program (Aperture -vs- iView MediaPro) to manage the work flow. Thus, keeping my MacBook Pro hard drive freed up.
    (3) The majority of Apple Discussion users seem dedicated to using Aperture. What do you see as the benefits of Aperture -vs- iView MediaPro? Yes, I know the latter in now owned my MS.
    (4) Still not totally sure, the best way, to workflow my photos with with the dual external drives and Aperture. Your guidance, please.
    (5) Here is a possible scenario (example):
STEP ONE - (at home) download a new batch of photos (Olympus E-1, high res jpeg's, no raw) onto my macBook Pro (MBP) into folder "A".
STEP TWO - process (ingest) ... move the new photos into Aperture.
STEP THREE - load them into my home external drive.
STEP FOUR - The next time I am in the office load the original jpegs (folder "A") onto my office external drive.
STEP FIVE - Delete the originals photos from folder "A", keeping my MBP hard drive space freed up.
STEP SIX - unsure ... somehow connect the new photos on the office external drive with Aperture (or iView MediaPro).
Where have I missed the boat?! Scrambled things up?! Does this make sense?
For what I am seeking to accomplish, will iView MediaPro accomplish what Aperture could perform?
    Kind regards,
    Bill Siegrist

    Bill-
If all you are doing is managing 30 GB of pre-existing JPEGs in 2007 iVMP is probably superior. However I would venture a guess that you also intend to capture new images with your DSLR. For that you very much want Aperture. And IMO moving to 2008 and beyond Aperture's potential far exceeds iVMP's.
And you did note that iVMP is now owned by MS; not good.
Solving an entire workflow is not something easily done in a few forum paragraphs. I strongly recommend that every DSLR photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 1.5 (Apple Pro Training) by Orlando Luna and Ben Long (Paperback - Oct 18, 2006).
Have the CD and a MacIntel with 2 GB or preferably more of RAM prior to ordering the Aperture trial so you don't waste time of the 30 day trial. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual. Due to the limited hard drive capacity, anyone with a laptop should focus on developing a "Reference Masters" workflow.
You say JPEGs, no RAW. I would in the strongest possible terms recommend that you consider switching to a RAW workflow. In addition to allowing extraordinary post process editing, RAW image files contain much more image data. I believe that your DSLR will capture up to a dozen RAW pix before the buffer fills. Shooting JPEGs is a serious under utilization of a capable DSLR.

  • IPhoto or Aperture--Which work-flow?

I have several thousand digital pics and some small video clips that need to be cataloged and managed in some type of database. I have some experience with: iPhoto, iViewMedia Pro and Aperture. I have use those applications; yet, I don't have enough current experience to help me to understand the best work-flow... I'm leaning toward the use of iPhoto and Aperture.
I need to accomplish the following:
    -Searchable Database of media...
-Keywords and other meta-data in use...
-A flexible workflow that allows me to have the most options available as the images are repurposed...
    -Maximum protection of this media...
-Do not want to ever lose the integrity of the original images...
-Need the ability to identify duplicates during import... iPhoto does this... I'm not sure that Aperture does.
I was thinking that I would need to use at least two applications... for example, I could possible use Aperture as the first stop and main repository of ALL digital media and dump things to iPhoto as needed for special iPhoto features that are not available in something like Aperture. Any, ideas on proven work-flows?
Also, I need to make other decsions:
-File Renaming. Many "experts" say that ALL incoming media should be renamed... Well, I'm not sure that's the best thing unless the new name retains a vital portion of the old name since you may have a need to reference the original file name to retrieve it from somewhere or to ID it's source, etc... What are your thoughts about renaming files?
-Dealing with duplicates... How do you handle this? Assume that you have many gigs of files from multiple locations and you want to build ONE library of unique images...
-Use References or allow the media to be managed? iPhoto and Aperture both support two different methods of utilizing your images which is in effect during import... you either import via reference or you allow the application to manage your library based on meta-data (primarily date info)... Well, what method should I use and why? Currently, most of my images are grouped into folders that indicate approximate date of the images and the source (ex: "NanCam_20061231"). Also, I will want to integrate or add to my library (no matter how I manage it) some unique pics from an iPhoto library that is being managed by iPhoto... just think of this as a collection of images with a different folder organization than mentioned above. So, what method do you recommend and why?
-If nothing has been imported, what workflow do you suggest? At the moment, I do not require the features of Aperture (but I would like to begin using it very soon), so I could start using iPhoto 6. I have some ideas yet I would rather not load the question... What do you recommend?
As I write this, I'm thinking that I should toss everything into iPhoto with the idea that something is better than nothing. However, I wanted to internalize a game-plan or work-flow that I could hang my hat on and not have to think about this so much--ideas?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Robert:
You might want to look at The DAM Book by by Peter Krogh. It's essentially the bible among professional photographers for managing image files. It can answer you questions.
For me here's my workflow (I use both iView MediaPro and iPhoto):
1 - upload each shoot immediately to a folder on the desktop.
2 - date and name that folder: 01/30/07-Disneyland trip
3 - put that folder in with my other source folder and import into iView.
4 - batch rename those files with the international date format and brief description: 2007-01-30-Disneyland trip-001.jpg, -002.jpg, etc.
5 - import that folder into iPhoto giving me a roll with same name as the folder and file names that will sort and search chronologically.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Bus2014 Work flow display problem

    Hi Folks,
In my work flow I am using BUS2014, when I am trying to interpet the process for decison step, the process should display the purchase contracts, In some users its diaplaying and in some users its not displaying even though the same authorisations are there for all the users.
    What could be the problem.?
    Secondly,
I am using one more decision step down the branched work flow to stop for user decision to change the purchase contracts, the  problem is when I am trying to call method display and when user is changing the contracts into change mode, saving and returning back the whole session is comming back to Easy access rather than staying in deision step of the user in workflow inbox. is there any alternative that I can deal with.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Krishna Mukthineni

    Hi folks,
The second problem lies with the application displaying.. It cannot go to some other transaction like change mode and come back as in Njoy tranctions... so I have adjusted the code to make the display of the method in change mode i.e. Me32k so it is working fine.
But still I have the first problem .. some times the display through method dont reflect for the user.. please help in this regard...

If you have a look at the data models in - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/epm-data-models-11121-354684.zip
There is the structure of the planning application tables, have a look at the HSP_PM_* tables
Alternatively you can look at extracting the information using LCM.

  • Creating work flow

    Hi  all,
i am new to Work flow,
can any body tell me how can i trigger the work flow from my abap program, and how can i send the required details from the program to W/F ?
    kumar

    hi Narin,
    i am new to WF,
it was not clear, actually i want to integrate the work flow with BPM in PI (Process Integration 7.0.
i am trying to create WF part in the SAP R/3, for the the Aproval part, because PI 7.0 doesnt have the feature User decision. So i am trying to push the data of Leave details to the WF and trigger the WF in the R/3 through a proxy program.
For creating Work flow, is Bussiness Object needed? What is the use of it, but i dont have any Business object for my Leave details, What to do?
    My actual thought is,
    1. create srcreen in SAP R/3, which has all the relevent fields of Leave details like emp_id, start date, end date, leave balance. i will put user commands(push buttons) like Approve, Reject, change.
In Wf this screen should apear with the leve fields with the corresponding values and push buttons.
once the manager or aprover clicks any the push buttons, in the next step the corresponding action should be done.
in this, is it possible to put the logic to capture the status of the WF like approved or Rejected? and send it back to the program in which this WF called?
Is it possible? or is there any alternative solution?
here in this i have query, how can i proceed? and what are the pre requisits to create WF?( like Busines Objects, triggring events, sep sequences, contaner elements, data base tables and structures etc.) and how do i create it?
can you give me the code? and Tcodes, to maitain events, etc....
    can anybody help me?
    thanks,
    kumar

  • How to config work flow for approval in snp?

    Dear Expert,
we want to running TLB for deployment stock orders which are approved by leaders.
please tell us how to config work flow for approval in snp?
    thanks so much

    Hi,
I got to know from DB49 that some workflow is available in GATP, but as far as I know, there is no such possibility in SNP.
Deployment stock transfer kind of data exists in livecache order series, and it's very tough to manipulate it in some way to suit the approval workflow.
As far as I can propose, you would need to do following (big custom development):
    1) Create a custom transaction
    2) Read Deployment Stock transfer data in accordance with your selection criteria and display it to the relevant user/approver
    3) User would accept/reject the Deployment Stock Transfer. This action is possible in a custom transaction.
    4) If Deployment Stock transfer is rejected, delete it from livecache
    5) Now when you run TLB, only approved Deployment Stock Transfer would be available to be coverted to STOs.
In the above development, you could create logs/reports as you need for audit kind of purpose.
This won't be a very simple development, but it's possible.
May be someone could give you some better alternative.
    Thanks - Pawan

  • UCCX change work flow group based on CSQ

Does it possible to assign a work flow group to a CSQ, or change the work flow group from script ?
    Rg,
    Gerald.

gerald.chong wrote:Thanks for the explanations. I understand the layout can be change via the script, but that I am require to do is to have different wrapup code based on different queue. Will it be possible ?
Sadly, I don't think this is possible. I just looked into this a couple weeks ago for a customer that asked us for the very same thing. The only built-in alternative I was able to offer them is to load up the entire wrap-up code list carefully sorted and prefixed, like "HR: Tax Changes" and "HR: Benefits Changes" and "OtherTopic: Reason 1" and "OtherTopic: Reason 2". I believe there's no built-in limit to number of wrap-up codes.
As another alternative, my company (and several others) have external wrap-up code applications that are much more flexible, and can offer different wrap-up codes on a per-CSQ basis. It was written to fill wrap-up code needs back before UCCX gained built-in wrap-up codes, so we don't really sell it too much these days, but it does fill a need here and there for certain customers.

  • RFC to update/ reject work flow

    Hi Experts,
Is there any RFC/ FM to approve or reject the work flow?
I am using SAP_WAPI_DECISION_COMPLETE, with following inputs:
    WORKITEM_ID <000000665113>
    LANGUAGE = EN
    USER  = <user id>
    DECISION_Key  = 0001
    DO_COMMIT= X
    It gives:
    return code = 2
message line: M = E, line =     Work item 000000665113 is not a user decision
    Message structure
    MSGID                M            MSG        MSGV1
    SWR                  E                 205           000000665113
Where am I going wrong? Need help.
It shows  ready status after execution at SWIA.
    Is there an alternative?
    Thanks,
    Ritu

    Hi Ritu
Call FM SAP_WAPI_GET_WORKITEM_DETAIL, the export parameter WORKITEM_DETAIL-TOP_WI_ID will give you the work item ID of the parent. If you do not have sub-workflows within the main WF, you will just need to call it once. But if you are using sub workflows and your step is inside the Sub-WF, then call it first to get the Sub WF ID, then Use the sub WF ID and call it again to get the MAIN WF Id ....
And if you want the details on the main Workflow, use the TOP_WI_ID and then call SAP_WAPI_GET_WORKITEM_DETAIL again to get the details of the main WF.
    Regards,
    Modak
Good to see that you are learning ... however do keep the SCN Rules Of Engagement in mind ( http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-18590 ) . Ask only one question in one thread.
Also, your question are not very specific for SRM and hence the right place to post such questions are on the forum SAP Business Workflow http://scn.sap.com/community/bpm/business-workflow
Post your question on this (current) forum only when you need SRM specific advise for workflows.

  • Work flow RAW - JPG conversion question

I am still not only working on Aperture's features but learning also the best way to manage a work flow with it. So, here's what I want to do.
#1 - I have an external drive coming so I don't have to store all my pictures (many of them now RAW)on my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive. I really don't need the RAW files anymore that I have used to create the final versions, which Aperture now stores as either TIFF or PSD files. I really just need to have my final versions stored now as JPG files now that I am done editing. Do I just export the files I want from my MacBook Pro onto the new hard drive as JPGs, then re-import them into Aperture as another project/folder?
#2 - When I import new RAW images from my camera, edit them and have completed the project, many times I just want to save the final versions as JPGs and discard the RAW files. Is there an easy way to do this within Aperture versus exporting them, deleting the original files, and re-importing as JPGs as new project?
    Thanks.
    Matt

    Steve:
That may be a good point. I will need to calc it out. My new drive coming in is a 750 Gig 800-Firewire drive.
I have currently a 320gig drive on a server that I use only for pictures. Shooting JPG, it was about half full for about 6 months of shooting. When I started shooting RAW in the last month, the drive is now almost full. I have 12 Gig left on it.
I do weddings, model shoots, portraits, event documentations...lots of stuff so I take a LOT of pictures. I really don't keep everything (blurry shots, half-closed eyes on subjects, etc), but I do keep a lot.
    My work: http://www.mattclinephotography.com and http://www.flickr.com/photos/kb8wfh
I may just try it with keeping the RAW files there and see how it does with file storage. Backup of files that large in quantities that large is going to be another question all together. Looks like I need a big job so I can buy a DROBO.

I try to update External List by other list Work Flow, in Sharepoint 2010 Foundation.
    Here is the manual:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff394479(v=office.14).aspx
But it fails , and the error message is “The
workflow could not update the item in the external data source. Make sure the user has permissions to access the external data source and update items.”
Is there some limited in Foundation?

With no Secure Store in Sharepoint what we ended up doing was creating a new external content type, adding a new connection and picking a connection type of .net type instead of sql.  This means we needed to create a .net app as the go between but within
.net we had all the usual tools for connecting to sql without permission issues.

    Identity Service Authentication failure.
    Identity Service Authentication failure.
This means that you have wrong username/password entries in your configuration files. Please recheck them and then things should be fine...
    Hope this helps!

  • Triggering a sub work flow for multiple users at same time.

I have a scenario in which I have created sub workflow as an activity for approval process. This sub work flow should be triggered for multiple users at the same time and their decison is independent of each other.
This is like creating multipe instance of the same sub work flow and then the sub work flow runs indepedently as a new work flow for each of the approver and the process is completeded for approver independently.
    How can this be achieved?

    Tyr to do like this,
    1. First include the subworkflow in the main workflow template.
    2. Now include standard Block Step in the main workflow template.
    3. In the block select the block type as ParForEach.
    4. Before doing the 3rd point make sure that all the agents for whom you want whom you want to initiate the workflow, populate them in a Multiline conatiner element.
    5. Once completing 3rd and 4th points open the block step under the tab ParallelProcessing  assign the multiline container element name in the   for e;g if the multi line container element name is COSTCENTER then do the binding like below. the conatiner element COSTCENTERLINE is created by default once you include the multi line conatiner element under parller processing tab.
    &COSTCENTER[&_WF_PARFOREACH_INDEX&]&   -------->     &_COSTCENTER_LINE&
Now assign the agent of the subworkflow as COSTCENTERLINE , imean if suppose you have 3 entries in the internal table then three separate and for three different agents the workflow is instantiated.
