Aperture3 Files: Newbie needs confirmation and direction!!

Forum is helpful and I understand the managed vs referenced debate, but I am still trying to get my workflow organized.
Is this the best way to work with the these 1-5 criteria ???
My "unknowns" include ...can I trust Time Machine as backup for Aperture Library and is "Export Library" the best way to move files from laptop to External HD for future use keeping Masters with Version info. ( because "vault" will erase any files I erase and I plan on cleaning up laptop by deleting files)
I am working with: 1) MacBookPro 17" Mac OS X 10.6.5 and Aperture 3
2) huge number of files I have to manage (up to 2000RAW/day)
3) need for portability (Aerial shots across Canada Atlantic-Pacific-Artic)
4) my fear Masters will get "lost" (in the future) in my ever growing number of External HD's if they are not kept on same HD as Versions
5)need for others to be able to also edit with "non Mac" Hardware/Software
thinking I should a) import Raw files to MacBook laptop
b) have "Time Machine" plugged in to keep updated
c) Rate and edit what I can in a timely manner
d) as 500 Gb laptop fills: Export jpegs to 'UVW' EXTERNAL HD (for nonMAC editing) AND " Export as Library" (app. 200gb of the SAME oldest files) to 'XYZ' External HD (For my future use)--- to keep laptop functioning well ...... and have Time Machine as 2nd back-up of Masters(or can Time Machine" not be used this way if it throws out old info)??
Is this the best way to work with the above 1-5 ???
Thank-you for any direction!!
Sincerely,
FundyFlyer

The lack of a response may be that there is no 'best' way as a general rule. Whatever works for you is what is best. I will answer from my point of view in understanding your intent.
My "unknowns" include ...can I trust Time Machine as backup for Aperture Library and is "Export Library" the best way to move files from laptop to External HD for future use keeping Masters with Version info. ( because "vault" will erase any files I erase and I plan on cleaning up laptop by deleting files)
Time Machine can be used. It will not complete a backup of the Aperture library while Aperture is running (I don't think it even attempts to back up the library until Aperture has been quit).
This should be fine as long as there is plenty of empty HD space at all times (say at least 20%, although most would recommend more).
b) have "Time Machine" plugged in to keep updated
This is fine as long as you understand my comment about it not completing until after you quit Aperture. You could just connect the external when done with a session in Aperture and manually invoke a back up.
c) Rate and edit what I can in a timely manner
Completely fine and in your control.
d) as 500 Gb laptop fills: Export jpegs to 'UVW' EXTERNAL HD (for nonMAC editing) AND " Export as Library" (app. 200gb of the SAME oldest files) to 'XYZ' External HD (For my future use)--- to keep laptop functioning well ...... and have Time Machine as 2nd back-up of Masters(or can Time Machine" not be used this way if it throws out old info)??
Don't let the drive fill up. Just watch your free space and then do your 'housecleaning' to suit the situation.
I would not export directly to a drive formatted for a PC. Instead; I suggest exporting to a temporary folder on the desktop and then copy to the drive formatted to use with a non-Mac OS.
Time Machine may need to delete older backups to make way for new ones, but it should warn you first. In this case, you may need to look at a larger HD if possible.
A couple of thoughts:
Since you want to run a Managed library (or at least that is what it sounds like) you could just run small libraries with unique names, copying them over to an external HD (formatted Mac OS X Extended) as a backup strategy. Once copied, you could then delete the old one and create a new one to start on a new job or whatever you would use as a dividing point.
Remember, you can merge libraries, so someday in the future; you might want to have a master library with all libraries merged. Note - if this is a possibility, you would want to think about a project naming scheme and organizational scheme inside the Aperture libraries that will make a future merge work seamlessly. Perhaps a spreadsheet you build listing the project names and structure as you go?
Here is a link to the correct External HD formatting recommendations for use with Aperture (which refers to using it for the library, but I would use it for any connection directly to Aperture - as in; your desire to export versions to a drive):
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252
Here is the current support page for Time Machine. There is a tip about backing up a file larger than 1 GB under the 'Selecting items to exclude from the back up' which is interesting. I do not know how Time Machine handles the Aperture Library (as a large file or as individual files).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
There is a current understanding that Time Machine was updated to work correctly with Aperture libraries and I know from personal experience that it works correctly on my machine, but I am not certain of the space usage on the Time Machine backup drive because I have not monitored that.
For my part, I use the following for backup of my managed library:
1 - Copy a backup of original images to a dedicated external drive on import using the backup option in the import settings drop-down.
2 - Monthly copy of the Aperture library package to another external drive.
3 - Time Machine backup.
Is this the best way to work with the above 1-5 ???
Again, the best way will be whatever works for you.
My 2 cents in the situation you describe would be smaller libraries with unique names that are periodically copied to an external as backup (and are designed such that a future merge into a master library would be seamless). This would also allow you to use Time Machine for a current backup in emergency but not rely on it as the long term backup.

  • PC w/ system 7. PS Elements8. Need cost and directions for upgrading to latest version.

My pc runs system 7. I use PS Elements 8. I want to upgrade elements to the latest version. My questions are: Do I need to take system 8 out before installing the upgrade? Is there any known problems with this particular upgrade? What is the cost? Thx so much.

If you go to the product page in the Adobe web site (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-elements.html) you can see the pricing for purchasing the latest version of PSE.  If you live in the US, there is currently a special where you can buy the full version for less than the upgrade version... or at least that's what I see.
You can remove the old version before installing the new one, but if you do purchase the upgrade, you will need the serial number from the old version to validate the upgrade installation (doesn't make sense to buy the upgrade though if the pricing is as I saw).

I am trying to clear files from my computer. I have a bunch of .m4v protected files that will not delete. They are lectures from college that I do not need anymore and would like to delete them to make room on my computer. I have looked at the help sites and they seem to give directions to change files that people are saving in the future and not regarding past files. I am unable to change anything about the file including the name, so I can not change these past files from .m4v to something else which is deletable such as .mp4 etc. Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

Well, most of what we can tell you is already stated in the message you are getting.  A phone can only sync with one library at a time.  You have apparently synced your phone with a different iTunes library in the past, or changes have been made to this library so the phone no longer recognizes it as the library with which it was synced.  To know which you will have to provide the information.
If you bought them using the AppleID you use with this phone it may simply be easier to re-download them directly to the phone rather than sync them, though you will want to resolve that issue at some point.

From my little knwledge, it is not possible to insert FLV
file in the HTML page directly. For this you have to made a player
with flash which plays the FLV.And this swf can emdded in the HTML
    page.
You can also download free flash videoplayers like JW Player.
    Thanks

hii, on my iphone 4s, i tried upgrading my OS and i was asked if i needed back up and i said yes, after upgrading i couldnt find any of my files, document, pictures, music and all. please i need help please.

    Hi,
usually when you upgrade, it should not delete your files, but if it happens, than you should have a backup.
Unfortunately it is very common, that people don't know, what exactly is in the backup.
The question is, what files exactly you are missing? Own pictures, or taken with the device? Purchased music form the iTunes Store, or own? ....
Documents and files are mostly up to the developer of the app, if they are part of the backup, usually not and you need to transfer them before.
In the backup you will find just pictures from the Camera Rolle folder, everything else you should have on the PC, if you had it on the device.
Same then for music, you can transfer purchased music from the device, but your own works just one direction, from PC to device, from device to PC it doesn't work.
In future I recomand you to be sure how the backup works or use a 3rd party app (iExplorer) where you have a little bit more "freedome" than with iTunes.
Or you maybe just restored from the worng backup

I see "can't access cellular data network" in an instant before the file's icon is replaced by the file's name. In Inbox three emails in a row show there is an attachment. My iPad 3rd gen. runs 7.1.

You have Acrobat Pro on your system. It will try to open PDFs, and of course it will fail. You must uninstall it. Then, you will need a PDF reader. So install Adobe Reader. That seems quite simple, but perhaps something is wrong. If anything goes wrong with these two steps (1) uninstall Acrobat Pro (2) install Adobe Reader, then please let us know the details.

  • CS3 plugins needed: worldready and conditional text plugins to open files

I have CS3 Creative Suite and I created a digital portfolio that will not open on my new computer because it says a worldready plugin and conditional text plugins are needed. I called the adobe hotline but they said since it's CS3 they do not have support for my issue and that I would need to update to CS5. If someone could please direct me in the right direction it would be extremely appreciated.

You are trying to open a file saved in a more recent version of InDesign. If it was only those two plugins listed it's a CS4 file. The file will need to be opened in the correct version and exported back to .inx through CS4 (CS5 files need to be exported to .idml before they can be opened in CS4). Unsupported features will be lost and text may reflow du to differnces inthe text engins from version to version.

How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.  The folders are using Microsoft programmes as this is compatiable with 90% of my colleagues, therefore I can't use the Icloud service.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

Hi, I am using my icloud on my iphone but am unable to find it on my mac book pro. It's not under my system preferences like it shows under the setup. Can I download it again? Or something. I just need to backup some files on my computer and am unable.

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

I've seen in .NET 3.0 that there is a Enumeration for Stapling in the System.Printing Namespace. I need to figure out how to automate the printing in adobe but right before it prints, have .NET assign the printer and whether it should be stapled or not.

  • After rebooting mac, backup from hard drive was too large and didn't happen. I continued the reboot and can safely use my mac now, but how do I transfer the backup files I need from my hard drive onto my mac/macs system?

Seems like a silly question but I had an appointment at my local apple store about a start up issue, ran some tests and passed them which was fine.
After this, I was left to reboot my mac and basically transfer files from my harddrive onto my macbook. However, I couldn't choose the files to be transferred and so I went with the reboot and the startup issue I initially had was fixed, although I need the files from my hardrive to be transfered onto my mac.
There are backups and documents I need.

I'm not sure I understand, but are you asking how to copy files from your external drive? Open two Finder windows. In one find the files you want to transfer, in the other where you want to put them. Select the file and drag it over.

If I understand correctly, Sonic Kaboom.swf needs to be edited in a separate Flash authoring program and then reinserted into your HTML document.
As Murray said, Flash is dead.  Nobody uses it anymore.   We use HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript animations which have universal support from Smartphones, Tablets and other web devices that can't support Flash.   Look at Edge Animate.
