Aperture3  Library full

Hi. My Aperture 3 library has posted a pop-up saying it is full. I have about 9000 raw format images (approx 9 MB files) in the library. Is there a way I can load images where I can have the benefit of the raw format without taking up so much space? Or do I start another library? I cleaned out the trash plus a few unwanted projects which has given some space. However, I think I have read where photographers have 70K images stored in Aperture 3. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yours is a common problem, even typical when folks use Managed Masters. You are no doubt currently using Aperture's (unfortunately default) Managed-Masters setup, which invariably leads to overfilled hard drives on single-drive boxes.
Once you switch to the more appropriate *Referenced-Masters Library* Aperture will help you keep from overfilling the internal drive.
First off, all *hard drives should be less than 70% full.* That is important for speed and stability. Don't try to do anything until <70% full is achieved for all drives. To get to less than 70% full move data off of the internal drive to external drives.
The Aperture Library should live on the internal drive for best speed.
Best solution (after you achieve minimum 30% free space on all drives), especially with single-internal-drive computers like laptops and iMacs, is to reconfigure your image Masters to have a *Referenced-Masters Library* on the internal drive with the Masters referenced on external drives via FW800 or (preferably) eSATA; however Referenced Masters usually do still work adequately with Masters accessed on externals via slower methods like FW400 or USB. After a slow reconfiguration process it will work fine, your speed and operation will be recovered and the Referenced-Masters Library will remain a reasonable size, not again grow to overfill the internal drive.
Note that Vaults back up the Library but a Referenced-Masters Library does not have the Masters in it, so Masters must be separately backed up.
Back up Masters before import into Aperture or any other images management application. Then with the new Masters on external drives select Store Files: "In their current location" from the import window when importing into Aperture. This will maintain a *Referenced-Masters Library*. Routinely create Vaults to back up the Library.

  • I'm trying to sync my ipad to the itunes library - but I get an error message saying I Tunes Library full.  What can I do?

I have an Ipad 2. I am trying to sync my ipad to the itunes library, but I get an error message - saying the itunes library is full.  How can that be? I've deleted lots from the library to see if that would help - but it still states I am about 25gb short.  Can anyone help what to do?

Could any of the music have been sourced on an external USB drive or a network drive? In iTunes, go to one of the songs that won't sync. Bring up the info page, and look at the location of that song on the disk. Does that file and path exist? That could be your problem, especially if they were on a USB drive you forgot about.

  • Aperture 3 library full - continued

I have just been re-reading the info supplied to this previously posted (by me) topic. It seems more-or-less clear that referenced masters on an external HD is the answer. However, I read in a FAQ, "what happens when my internal HD is full?", the answer given is to move the library to an external HD. This seems so simple that there must be a downside. Is this so?

The information you got in the other thread is spot on.
"Library" was a poor choice for the name of the Aperture database files. It is only applicable as a metaphor when all your Masters are managed. As soon as you have a Referenced Master, you have a Library which has access to a book and everything in it (your Master), but doesn't contain the book. This leads to much confusion.
Masters can be either in your Library or anywhere else. The only requirements are that you tell the Library where to find them (that is the single most important part of importing), and that the Library can tell whether they are currently available (and, for the record, that when it tries to read them the connection isn't snail-slow).
Your Library (with or without Masters) should be wherever you have the fastest throughput to your CPU. In practice, the Library can be on an external drive. USB is not recommended (I wouldn't try to use anything slower than FW800). Your Masters need not be on a terribly fast connection -- they aren't read nearly as much as the files in your Library.
As a rule of thumb: as long as your machine can run Aperture, break the bank to put the Library on the fastest drive you can afford (SSD is desirable -- I can't afford one), and put your Masters on whatever you have around. I ended up putting a 500 GB 7200 RPM drive in my laptop, on which I now have two large Libraries. I keep current Masters in the Library. I keep all my older Masters on FW800 drives.
NB: you have to backup your Referenced Masters yourself.

  • Aperture Library Full

I'm getting the following message when trying to import images (into Aperture3) from a folder on my desktop:
"There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need at least 241MB of free space."
I'm not very Apreture savy, but I have tried the following:
Tried setting the "Store Files" to "in the Aperature Library" "in current location" and a folder on my desktop setting. All render the same message noted above
Deleted my Aperture Library folder; started Aperture to create a new library folder; got the same message noted above.
Checked my HD space avaiable, it has over 1TB remaining
Check Library size in Finder under home/Pictures/Aperture Library it indicates no size for the library
    Any ideas?

    Lex/John:
Thank you for your guidance. It allowed me to fomulate the correct search phrase and stumple upon this proceedure which, although from the Aperture2 manual, also worked in Aperture3:
To change the location of a library file:
    1 Quit Aperture.
2 Locate the Aperture Library file in the Pictures folder on your hard disk and move it to the new location in a different folder or on a different hard disk.
3 Open Aperture and choose Aperture > Preferences, or press Command-Comma (,).
4 Click General in the Preferences window, if necessary.
5 Click Choose under the Library Location option.
6 Navigate to the new location of the library, select it, and click Select.
7 Quit Aperture and then reopen it.
When you reopen Aperture, it accesses the library in the new location.

  • Library Full while Importing Images

Just got my 1st iMac and trying the iPhoto.
I try to import around 6,000 photos (3-4M each) to iphoto. During the import process, an error pop and said my library was full and the process stopped. (aound 5,000 photos were imported)
After that, a message "xxx photo is waiting for me to import, yes/no" everytime I open the iphoto. However, no matter I choose yes or no, seems nothing happened.
How can I get rid of that message? Is there any size limit of a iphoto library?
p.s. my machine got 16G ram and 1T harddisk

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • Library full!!!

if i have filled my library and still want to put more music in to it. How do i get round it.
I thought if i emptied my library i could fill it again (didn't delete the tracks off ipod itself ) but when i came to downloading the new music i had just imported from cd (11 tracks) to itunes library, it emptied all 408 tracks off the ipod that i had just deleted from itunes library replacing them with the 11 songs i had just imported.
I don't want to empty itunes library again if when i sync it next time it deletes all the tracks off ipod too.
    help???

You have 2 questions in your post, so let's deal with the first one.Exactly what do you mean when you say your library is "full", do you mean the capacity of your iPod or your system's HD is full? If it's a case of your system's HD being full, buy an external HD & run iTunes off the EHD. You can find externals dirt cheap these days.
Now, from your description of what is happening when you sync your iPod, your iPod must be on autosync. The purpose of an autosync is to make the iPod content a mirror image of the iTunes content. Thus, any song not in iTunes will be deleted off the iPod on the next sync. If you absolutely must manage your music in this manner, you will need to set your iPod preferences to "manually manage". Relying on your iPod as the ONLY BACKUP for your music is also a very dangerous idea. What if your iPod is lost or stolen? What if you have an iPod problem that requires a restore? Any of these scenarios means your music now HISTORY. If you really must manage your music in this manner, it is IMPERATIVE that you begin a REGULAR BACKUP plan for you music.

  • Library empty in ipod, library full when connected to the pc

    Hi Poeple,
My 30GB Black 5th generation iPoD worked fine for about 4 month now (got it at the end of january).
But now i have some very strange problems:
When i connect my ipod to the computer,
    1. it's shown white under the devices and the serial number as well as the version number is not schown in the summary tab
    2. i can put music on my ipod and the library is full with my songs (about 10gig, so enough free space for other stuff)
    3. but now: when i disconnect it correctly from my pc and want to look if all songs are there, the library is empty but the capacity shows that this 10 gig are full. Also it says that there are 0 songs on it (:S lol?)
all worked fine until the update to itunes 7.1.1.5 and now nothing works anymore...
The first thing i did was resetting the ipod to the originally settings, and than i deleted all songs on it. After this it worked and was verified right in the summary. Now i put something on it and looked if it works: it did. then the rest of my music and i looked again: the library was empty again... but full on my comp....
    Answer fast please.
Is there a solution for this problem or is the only way the solve this prblem to send it back and get a new one (warranty)?
    Greetings
    Benni

  • Help me...my aperture3 library is in error

This is warning while reopening Aperture 3 after crash :
There was an error opening the database for the library “/Volumes/myjob/Aperture_Library/....

Try doing a Consistency Check and a Rebuild.
Press Command-Option while booting Aperture, and you'll get the window which asks if you want to do these procedures. Do the Consistency Check first. After Aperture opens, Quit. Then repeat the Command-Option re-boot and do the Rebuild. After Aperture opens, chances are you will be in good shape.
If not, then I hope you still have a back-up copy of your Aperture 2 Library. Run the Check and Rebuild on it before updating it into Aperture 3.

  • My Library full of songs disappeared!

Help me please! I just spent 2 weeks downloading over 1000 songs. I go to school and come back to nothing. The songs are on my ipod but are not on itunes anymore. I do not know what happened. What can I do? They just disappeared! Can I download from my ipod to my computer. Please help if you can.

For general library squiffiness following say an upgrade or a crash the easiest thing is to restore your last backup, but I guess if it were that simple you wouldn't be here.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping after restoring the backup library. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
Alternatively see this post from forum regular Zevoneer for options on moving your iPod data back to your computer.

  • Bought a new computer, how do I move my library full of referenced files?

I have my Aperture library on my laptop with all masters referenced and stored in a folder called "raw" in my home directory.
I'm trying to move everything over to my new Mac Pro, but I'm having trouble. I copied the folder of referenced masters into the home directory of my new computer, copied the library, preferences, etc. Of course when I start Aperture on the Mac Pro, it can't find the masters because the volume name is different. So I thought I could relocate the masters, but when I do this for an image, the thumbnail turns grey and in the viewer I get an "Unsupported Image Format" error. This happens for both JPG and NEF files.
Any suggestions? I have a rather complex folder structure with many projects, so I don't want to export individual projects.
    Thanks,
    steve

    Hi,
I haen't done this myself from a computer to another
When You mention you used "relocate masters"... how did you connect both computers? was one in Target disk mode. via ethernet?.
    did you try this:
    - in the "sharing"' pref panel, give your mac pro the name of your old computer.
    - start your old mac in firewire target disk mode (no name conflict as your old computer is not being used: only its HD)
    - copy the library to the new drive in the Mac Pro
    - launch AP on the mac pro and select the copied library. relaunch. because the computer name is identical and the disk from your old computer is mounted, you should see AP finding its referenced masters.
    - initiate the relocation of masters now
(be aware that I haven't tried this, this is just an educated guess)
(also, if you have a complex folder strcuture, try relocating just one or twwo pix and observe the new structure. Aperture cannot reproduce several custom-named folders in a new structure, unfortunately...
PS : while we'(re here, I advise you to format several drives as a RAID 0 array inside the mac pro in order to get a good responsivity from Aperture... this makes an amazing difference... most photographers disregard the value of fast storage. by fat I mean faster than a single device... hoping I'm legible...

  • One computer with 2 different apple accounts - why does the library merge?

we have one computer currently being used with my son's itunes account. When we added my younger son's account to this same computer, his downloaded/purchased music is being merged into the same library as my older son's. Is there any way to separate these accounts so that each kid doesn't have a library full of their AND their sibling's music? We assumed that by creating a new account that the music he purchased would go into his unique library.

If you are using different iTunes Store accounts on the same Windows or Mac OS X user account and haven't explicitly set up a separate library, there will only be one iTunes library regardless of how many iTunes Store accounts you have. iTunes libraries are completely separate from iTunes Store accounts.
