  • Mail gone, wont quit or display anything after update...

    Hi Folks,
In the process of helping my dad upgrade his G4 mini to 10.5.6 from 10.4.something. He's on dialup still so screen sharing to get him going is not really an option and I"m trying to help him with this over the phone and it's slow going. The upgrade DVD ran fine and there were no problems that he noted. The machine is now running 10.5.6 that came on the DVD all OK. It is able to go online and safari works. Mail however has choked.
THe window opens when you run the program, but no mail is displayed when you select inbox or any other mailbox. The right hand pane of emails is blank. He is able to select to write an email and has sent several to me but they were never actually sent, nor do they show in the drafts or send email or any other email box. I have attempted to rebuild the mailboxes from the mailbox menu, and while it allows him to select this it doesn't help, still no messages displayed.
Further, Mail wont quit. When you try to quit it it hangs and it requires that you force quit it before you can restart the machine.
All the account preferences and passwords and addresses appear to still be there, you can go to preferences and see the settings. This is a POP account not an imap account, so there should be local copies of all the messages he has received and kept in his inbox.
I suspect a database issue or something? Is there a way to totally rebuild the database from scratch?
I did try running the vacuum index command from the terminal and that ran without returning any errors, but did not fix the problem.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated thank you!

I found it! Here is the answer from "troubleshooting".
    Resolution
Force quit Mail if necessary: From the Apple menu, choose Force Quit, select Mail in the Force Quit window's list of applications, then click "Force Quit".
If the issue persists after relaunching Mail, follow these steps while Mail is not running:
From the Finder's Go menu choose Go to Folder.
Go to this location (type or paste the tollowing, then click Go):
    ~/Library/Mail
Move the items named "MessageRules.plist" and "MessageRules.plist.backup" to another location, such as your desktop.
Note: If you previously upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 to Mac OS X 10.5, the files will be named "MessageSorting.plist" and "MessageSorting.plist.backup".
Open Mail. Note: At this point you can either set your Junk Mail settings and re-create your Mail rules manually in Mail preferences, or follow the next two steps (if you re-create rules and Junk settings, do not perform the following steps).
    Quit Mail.
Place the items named "MessageRules.plist" and "MessageRules.plist.backup" back in the ~/Library/Mail folder (replace any copies that were added to ~/Library/Mail when you opened Mail).

  • Iphoto says  albums are currently sychronizing and wont quit.

Iphoto says  albums are currently synchronizing and wont quit. Force quit doesn't work either, what can I do?

Shut the computer down and then relaunch.  If, when you relaunch iPhoto it starts the synchronizing again and you can't quit, do the same as before.  But this time launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.  Use the options in the screenshot below:

  • FCP5  has GONE MAD, it WONT QUIT CRASHING.

FCP5 GONE MAD, WONT QUIT CRASHING.
The problem started earlier with a simple "Preview Disable" problem. While trying to fix this a new problem arouse, FCP5 has crashed at every single attempt to do anything with it... Here is a thread that will give you some background information leading to this problem. Jeff Hubbach, "PREVIEW DISABLE; [VTR OK]; read TimeCode and control camera" #6, 12:30pm Oct 17, 2005 CDT
I have run Disk Utility, trashed FCP5 preferences and restarted the computer and I had to force quit the program every time I have opened it today.
    What do you? please help

    Hello Patric,
The sofware "crash" meaning it locks up (So far what is does is that it shows the loading icon and thats it) I wait just a few minutes, but when I press the Cmd + Option + Esc to force quit, FCP5 reads " Final Cut Pro Is Not Responding" everything on red.
The other things is that even after force quiting, on the dock it still indicates that is open, and when I press the Cmd + tab to navigate through the programs, it still shows FCP as if it was open.
I don't have any network drive mounted. I am using one drive the same that is running the the OS and others...

  • Final cut WONT quit!

I haven't come across this before... FCP had been doing weird things, the Log and Capture window won't close etc, and now I can't quit FCP.
"Quit" is grayed out in the drop down menu. Applekey Q does nothing, and control clicking in the dock WONT bring up a Force Quit Option. (it does bring up a standard quit option but this too does nothing).
It would seem my only option it to manually shut down - however i am reluctant to as have just captured 20 DV tape worth of HDV and I don't won't to do it again!
Any ideas what may be the problem?
    Cheers
    Hugh

Only problem is that it will NOT force quit - I guess the only thing I can do is hold down the power button, then proceed with trashing the prefs after it reboots.
It's preferable to go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and Stop that process.
Try the hold down power button as the LAST resource.

  • Process wont quit even after forced quit.

so lately my MPB has been running really hot and according to istat my cpu a is running normally 140-170F. i decided to look at my activity monitor and found a process running called "asterisk" that was running 99% of my CPU. tried to use force quit and it just popped back up. i used spotlight to search for it and a folder came up. i didnt want to delete it or anything incase it was being used for something. but i dont know what it is linked to or how it got onto my computer.
should i delete it or what? i just wanted to get some opinions before i messed up my MBP

I have a new MacBookPro OSX 10.7.2 from the first day the laptop will wakeup from hibernation or sleep after the battery dies.
I try to let the battery cycle fully before plugging in and reguaarly the laptop shutsdown when the battery is low.
When i try to turn it back on it starts the wake up process with indicator bars showing progress, then it stops at about three bars and just beeps indefinatly until i power off the machine when i turn it back on it comes up but ive lost everything i was working on!
very frustrating, why wont it properly wake up after a low battery hibernation??!????
Well the question is when this happened the first time and you lost everything you were working on why did you let it happen the second time or the third or forth and not plug the computer in.
It may be frustrating but there is only one person to blame and that is you. Not Apple and not the computer. As YOU knew exactly what was going to happen but you let it happen anyway.
The true definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different outcome.

  • System Preferences wont quit, constant restarts ***??

Leopard is seriously causing me annoyance.
I have just done a fresh install from the dvd on a freshly erased hard disk & already i have had to restart about 10 times in the past day due to various applications crashing. System preferences however just keeps doing it & wont even force quit. Repairing permissions has no effect, Disk first aid says my drive is fine & i have done all software updates.
Does anyone know where I could start with this, apart from moving to Vista that is....

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Itunes wont quit on mac and cannot browse any apps or window

Hi,. I was just listening to my songs,. Then suddenly when I'm trying to exit my itunes, it won't quit. Everytime I try to restart my computer, my itunes keeps coming back, and I cannot use any of my applications, click any icons or open any windows on my mac, Help, I dont know what to do,

OS X Lion and Mountain Lion automatically opens the apps that were opened the next time you start up your Mac. First, press Alt, Command and Esc keys, choose iTunes and force close it.
If this doesn't work, turn off your Mac and turn it on while holding down the Shift key. By doing this, it will start up in safe mode. Then, log in, open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items, and make sure iTunes is not in the list. If it is, delete it. Finally, restart the computer

  • Applications wont quit...and wireless won't connect

After updating and installing content barrier on our Mac (after getting leopard) we starting having a weird problem: most applications we opened wouldn't quit. If we tried to quit the window would close but the small dot under the application in the dock would remain. We could not reopen the program without restarting the computer. If you right click the program in the dock it simply says "application not responding". I've opened the activity monitor utility and it does not show the program open. Could anyone shed some light on my situation? It would be greatly appreciated.
Also, sometimes when I awake the computer from sleep it does not get a wireless signal from our router. If you pull down the menu and select the router the tiny thinking "windmill" appears and continues spinning until I'm forced to reboot the computer. I'm not sure if the problems are linked but I'm very frustrated right now and need some help.
    Thanks!

    Hello again:
    Surely.
Open disk utility (located in applications). Highlight your data (for example, Macintosh HD). Click on repair permissions. Do not become impatient - this will take awhile and seem to be hung up.
Insert your software install DVD (Leopard). Restart, holding down the "C" key. Do not start the installation. Select disk utility from the menu. Highlight your disk. Run repair disk. The reason you cannot run repair disk from your HD is the fact that disk repair cannot be performed on a disk that you are booted from. This will identify and repair directory problems.
There are other steps that may be taken, but try these first.

  • Itunes wont quit after 10.7.3 update

    Hello
After updating my Macbook air to 10.7.3 my iTunes (10.5.3) will now not quit. It works fine and starts fine but when i try and quit i get the beachball of death. I have to then force quit it.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
    Cheers
    W

I finally backed off 10.7.3 back to 10.7.2.  Itunes still was misbehaving though like this and I started getting your stuff is not authorized when syncing iOS devices this morning.  I think there are probably several things going on from what i read. I was not having problem with 10.5.3 before the 10.7.3 update however. Not sure how all figures in but it did.  But as day has gone on I look back at my Pro via screen sharing and the syncing of one iPad sitting there wirelessly now works fine (after initial attempt with errors, authorization issues and such) so it seems to be smoothing out but time will tell.  I think I am going to wait to see how this all pans out before I attempt 10.7.3 again. Maybe a fix on it and a 10.5.4 itunes fix may help once apple figures out issues people are having?

  • How to restart from disk when Diskwarrior 4.2 wont quit and the option

I routinely defragmented my Mac Pro after setting the startup disk to Diskwarrior, now it won't quit and keeps rebooting. I cannot fint the eject hole on the disk platter so am stuck with it in mys machine. Have tried rebooting using Pram reset, option, shiftand the eject keys.
Are there any other keys that cancel the startup disk options and reset back to my boot disk?

I routinely defragmented my Mac Pro after setting the startup disk to Diskwarrior...
Disk Warrior doesn't defragment drives. Please don't waste any more time on this pointless action, which will either have no effect at all (apart from hours of lost productivity) or will cause problems like the one you have now.
Restart and hold down the mouse or trackpad button until the disc ejects. You might need to use a wired mouse to do this. If it doesn't work, the disc is physically stuck in the drive.

  • Itunes wont quit.

i decided to change my itunes toolbar icon, and in doing so i some how created two versions of it or something. any way, i didn't really care, as it worked fine for a few months until i opened itunes to play some music, and the icon had that dot under it to say it was open, and activity moniter and force quit apps said it was, but i couldn't open or force quit it. i had to use the other itunes- the one without the changed icon, but the other one is still open. i have quit itunes in terminal, but it just quit one of them. any help?

Do you mean the iTunes icon in the Dock? You should hold the cursor on the icon and choose Options > Remove from Dock. Then reinstall iTunes. Go to iTunes at the top of this page and download and install. You won't lose any data.
