APEX and BI Publisher - Characters Cause Report to Fail

My BI Publisher reports that have a "%" character on the *.rtf template are failing when I run them through APEX. The same reports run fine when loading sample data into Word and running the reports from Word.
I tried some logic to escape the "%" character but I could not get it to work. Does anyone have a workaround?
Here are other threads where this issue was encountered but I have not seen a fix.
APEX 3.0.1 and BI Publisher 10.1.3.2: escape character for percent sign?
'&' character and BI Publisher Intergration
BI Publisher report multiple queries
Regards,
Todd

The workaround is found in Metalink Note:463284.1.
In the rtf (template) use %25 instead of %. The pdf output will be %.

• APEX and BI Publisher - chart not displayed in html

Hi All,
I have created a report using BI Publisher and created a report query and uploaded the RTF template into APEX. The report contains a chart then a table.
When I run the report in HTML format the chart is not rendered, but the table is. The browser seems to show the page as loading for a very long time, but nothing seems to happen.
If I run the report in PDF the report is rendered correctly. Also in the BI Publisher Word plugin I can preview the report in HTML ok.
I'm using APEX 3.1.2, BI Publisher 10.1.3.4
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Matt

Hello,
Remember that Apex and BI Publisher are different products (they just "play" very nicely together).
Apex has the possibility to create SVG and Flash charts, SVG charts were great because they were very flexible, however Adobe has announced their discontinued support for the SVG plugin that some browsers need to display the SVG charts.
So moving forward, use Flash Charts instead, as most browsers already have Flash player plugins installed.
I'm guessing the reason your SVG chart isn't displaying in the browser is because you haven't installed the SVG plugin in your browser.
If you have a lot of SVG charts already in your applications, fear not! There is a simple SVG->Flash migration wizard you can use (look on the right hand side of the page when you edit your Chart region, and also in the Shared Components section if you want to migrate a lot of them). If you use these wizards Apex will automagically convert your SVG chart regions to Flash chart regions.
Hope this helps,
John.

• CM 14 and BI Publisher

I am currently using CM 14 and BI Publisher for the reports. When I create a report, it makes all of the sentences run back to back, even if I have pressed enter between sentences and spaced them out in CM 14.
Is there a way to format this to make it reflect what is entered in CM14?
Thanks in advance.
Example in CM14:
1) This is sentence one
2) This is sentence two
Example in report:
1) This is sentence one 2) this is sentence two

Dear Mac105/944485,
Thank you for contacting Oracle Customer Support for Primavera.
Please notice that this is a known issue in Contract Management 14 and integration with BIP. Currently there are no work arounds.
This issue is on the BI Publisher side for which bugs were created earlier. I would recommend you contact the BIP Support team to see if they have any potential workarounds to solve this issue.

Any ideas?
Wireless Interference
Might be caused by a cordless phone in the vicinity. To give you an example, my neighbor.....across the street...used to be able to literally crash my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
I discovered this by accident one day after spending weeks trying figure out why my network would crash at random times.
Other possibilities include a wireless security/camera system near you
Still other things might be an amateur ham radio operator....which should not interfere....but again from experience, I know that this can occur.
Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid metal surfaces near the Time Capsule and/or your computers
Elevate the Time Capsule as much as possible. Think of it as a water sprinkler....you want to get the room as wet as possible
Experiment with different wireless channels on the Time Capsule. To do this:
Open AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule
Click Edit
Click the Wireless tab
Click Wireless Options
Start with Channel 11 on the 2.4 GHz band and work your way down
It is unlikely that you are picking up interference on the 5 GHz band since there are.....for now at least.....far fewer networks using this frequency.

• APEX report with Break columns and BI Publisher

I am having an issue with APEX and using column breaks when printing to BI publisher.. It seems that when you write an APEX report that breaks on the 1st or 1st and 2nd columns, the grouping shows nicely in APEX, but when BI Publisher gets the XML data, and you do the same grouping using an RTF file, there is a group of rows with NO grouping info that occurs at the top of the report, then each group you expect has just ONE row..
(Just giving this a bump to see anyone has an idea here..)
Any suggestions?
Thank you,

WITH clause or Subquery Factoring allows the set of data to be reused multiple times within the SQL. Oracle will usually materialize the data into a temporary table (you will see it if you take an explain plan of the SQL).
I would be surprised if it was the actual WITH clause that was causing the performance issue, however you can test this by turning the WITH clause feature off. Go to the Physical model, right mouse click on your Database > Properties > Features Tab, scroll down to WITH_CLAUSE_SUPPORTED and switch it off.
I'd be interested to know if you do see actual improvement.
Good Luck.

• Physically printing a report from Apex using BI Publisher

Hi,
I know it is possible to generate and download a PDF (or any other format) in Apex using BI Publisher (Apex 4.0.2)
But is it possible to physically PRINT a report in a specified printer? For example, the user clicks a button and the report comes out of the printer just like that.
Note: I am NOT after a solution where the report is firstly displayed on the screen and then the user performs some action to print it from there (that is pretty easy to do.)
I know that BI Publisher can do it, as its web service has an option to do so.
Thanks
Luis

Hi Luis,
not sure this is possible.
Only SOME of the features of BI Publisher are used from APEX as a service to create the reports.
*) I am not aware of any parameters / attributes in APEX so that you could specify a printer directly
*) It is not part of the API you could use instead manually:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21676/apex_util.htm#CHDGFADB
I have just recently implemented that myself for an integration with JasperReports. It is currently in beta test:
http://daust.blogspot.de/2012/08/jasperreportsintegration-200-beta-test.html
Thus your options are:
*) I am not sure that BI publisher allows that but perhaps you could first call the apex utility function apex_util.get_print_document to retrieve the blob from bi publisher. Then perhaps (if allowed) send the blob again by yourself and using the print features of bi publisher.
Here you would have to write the utl_http communication yourself.
*) If bi publisher doesn't allow the separate process (generation first and then sending it to a printer) then you would also have to write a j2ee application which does that.
*) another option could be to store the generated blob in the filesystem on the database and call a shell script from within the database. This shell script would send it to the network printer.
Hope that helps,
~Dietmar.

• Problems with reports and XML-publisher - No XML

Hi!
I'm having a problem with Apps and XML-publisher. I made a report file, which queries some views. When executing in reports, I get all the data I expect.
Now, when I upload the reportfile to Apps and let it generate XML, my xml-file is empty (well, almost empty)
<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<!-- Generated by Oracle Reports version 6.0.8.27.0 -->
<T03501684>
<LIST_G_PERSOON>
<LIST_G_PERSOON />
</T03501684>
Anyone who can shed any light upon this problem?

OK, finally solved the problem... A good night's sleep always helps ;).
After just trying each queried table one after an other, I found the problem:
The difference between Oracle Apps (Dutch locale) and the reports builder (English) is the language... And our functional people have changed some names, but the Dutch ones, leaving the english names in place and one of the tables I query has language specific data, which is also appears in a where clause.

• Report 6i rdf's and XML Publisher

I'm trying to decide whether to implement Reports Developer 10g or XML Publishing as our reporting tool. Can I get some feedback from XML Publisher users who have also worked with the Oracle reporting tool Reports 6i? (I'm currently working with 6i)
How difficult is it to convert existing .rdf's into XML douments?
Are the complex queries represented in the 6i data model neatly transferred to the XML document or is there a lot of tweaking involved?
Do you find that you can create complex queries in the XML Publisher tool or is it easier to do it in Reports 6i and transfer the results over to XML?
How many of the Oracle seeded reports that are delivered as .rdf's have you converted to using the XML Publisher?

Hi Tim,
Context: R12 France Telecom (FT) migration from 11i
FT Reports are complex and the quantity of data / size of files generated by reports can reach up to 20Go. So I need to convert RDF to DATA Template because RDF can not generate some so big files (limit=2Go in 11i and may be 10Go in 12)
I experience some troubles / issues / limits with reports conversion to XML.
1 - some Data templates are not generated because of error : [052107_102109040][][EXCEPTION] java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsException: Index: 0, Size: 0. I sent you 2 mails in the past with error detail but have no answer.
2 - Data Templates are not directly usable because Reports include call to packages stored in PLL files. Pakages definition are well include in XML file generated by Report converter (1st step of conversion) but are not take in account when PL/SQL routine generation (Data template generation).
Can you help me especially for the 1st issue
I'd like to show a XMLP demo to FT using the Data source generator XDODTEXE in GL. I see XDOGLDEMO and GLGENJRNDT concurrent programs but there is no Data Definition / XML Data Template associated. Can you tell me if it exists a Data Template and where it can be retrieved from.

• Create PDF report with APEX and Oracle 11g doesn't work

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with the downloading of PDF reports from APEX with Oracle 11g.
When I try to download a PDF, Acrobat Reader says it can not open the file.
I have done the same test in an environment with APEX and Oracle 10g and it works perfectly.
Does anyone know if there is a known bug for version 11g.
Thank you very much.

Hi Munky,

I have a manual that contains headings and index entries that contain less than and greater than characters, < and >. The Publish to Responsive HTML5 function escapes these correctly in the main body of the text but does not work correctly in either the Contents or the Index of the generated HTML. In the Contents the words are completely missing and in the index entries the '\' characters that are required in the markers remain in the entry but the leading less than symbol and the first character of the word is deleted; hence what should appear as <dataseries> appears as \ataseries\>. I believe this is a FMv12 bug. Has anyone else experienced this? Is the FM team aware and working on a fix. Any suggestions for a workaround?

The Index issue is more complicated since in order to get the < and > into the index requires the entry itself to be escaped. So, in order to index '<x2settings>' you have to key '\<x2settings\>'. Looking at the generated index entry in the .js file we see '<key name=\"\\2settings\\>\">. This is a bit of a mess and produces an index entry of '\2settings\>'. This ought to be '<key name=\"<x2settings>\" >'. I have tested this fix and it works - but the worst of it is that the first character of the index entry has been stripped out. Consequently I cannot fix this with a few global changes - and I have a lot of index entries of this type. I'm looking forward to a response to this since I cannot publish this document in its current state.

• Apex and Natural Vs Surrogate keys

Hi
We've been using Apex for a few months now and there's a debate raging in our department over whether we should design our database tables using natural or surrogate (based on Oracle sequences / triggers) keys. Our experience as Apex developers shows that Apex itself looks to lean towards surrogate keys, a few examples are below:
- When creating forms on reports / tables Apex only allows 2 primary key columns without adding 'extras' in the background (see a previous post of mine).
- If we have a form on a table and our natural primary keys can be updated, the Apex-created DML statements break, as they look to do the update using the changed key values in the WHERE clause rather than the old ones. The only way around this seems to be to delete the inbuilt DML statements created by Apex and code your own, which is extra work.
- The Apex sample applications themselves seem to use sequences / surrogate keys.
What are people's opinions on this? In particular is there any guidance from the Apex development team on which is best to use with Apex?
Regards
Antilles

Hi Andrew,
As with abots_d, I only use "natural" keys for lookups.
>
1. the department names were here for 20 years and they never changed
>
But, can you guarantee that they never will? My firm has changed departmental names so many times, it's getting ridiculous! But other things also change over time - consider what happens if a person gets married and changes their name and you've used their previous names as the keys (and consider how much data in other tables may use those keys).
>
2. Server names are uniquely generated by special formula in excel to preciously avoid the duplication problem and guarantee the uniqueness within our glamorous bank.
>
SQL could probably recreate that formula and Unique Key constraints would handle the rest
>
3. no, we are not going to extend this app to cover any other banks
>
Given what's happening with the banking industry right now, who can say ;)
>
4. PK that means smth ( aka "server name" ) has a meaning, whereas meaningless - has no (business) value
>
Why does a bit of data have to have explicit "business value"? I would suggest that a surrogate key is a pointer to a record and allows you to easily create relationships. Once created, the key would never be changed regardless of what happens to the data on its record. Thus, the relationship is maintained. Using personnel (which our firm renamed as "Human Resources" a while back) as an example, it's likely that every employee would have an employee number. Does this number actually mean anything in itself, does it have "business value"? Most likely, it's just a convenient way to identify a person and relate records to them.
I would suggest that any non-numeric/date keys are relatively slow. As strings, the only way to check for their sort order would be to (A) convert to upper or lower case and (B) perform a string comparison left-to-right across the entire string. There's also the possibility of certain characters appearing in the strings that can cause issues - for example, quotes, apostrophes, colons, commas, question marks and percentage signs.
Also, consider the length of a VARCHAR2 that you would have to use - how big would it need to be to cover all possibilities? You may say 20 now but tomorrow you get data with 21 characters in it - do you want to update the table plus all related tables for that?
There are further issues with parent, child, grand-child etc relationships where the keys would have to be passed down in full through the relationships. Depending on how many levels you may have, a fair number of the fields on the bottom-most table would be there just for the keys.
It has been a standard industry practice for many years now to "normalise databases" to avoid lots of issues with keys and "repeating data". Apart from very simple lookup tables, I have stuck with those guidelines for years now without any problems at all.

• What are variables or parameters in Apex and how to use them?

Hi
What are variables or parameters in apex and how to use them to connect and run BI Publisher Report
From Apex URL

Hello Kanaiya,
You should go here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
Look at "What is Oracle APEX?" then download the documentation and review the various PDF files that are available.
If you have a version of APEX installed and available, go through the 2-Day Application Express Developer's Guide followed by the Advanced Developer's Guide.
Good luck,
Don.

• Strange characters on report from field overrun

We have a report, created with Cystal Reports 10, that is now giving us an issue. It is displayed via web browser.
When displayed using Crystal Enterprise 10, it looks fine. But when displayed with CR XI r2 JRC, we get strange characters after the field when the field on the report is overrun. The field on the report is not formatted wide enough for all data but this has not been an issue in the past, the overrun just displayed fine.
The display we are getting looks like:
For short data we get:
*TEST
For longer data (overrun) we get:
*TEST1瀲瀀猀
That should have displayed *TEST12.
I think I can get around this by formatting the field wider (I have not tried it yet) but we wanted to know if this was a known issue with a root cause / fix.

- The report is only generated and viewed via the web browser. A web screen takes criteria for the report data, does an SQL call to pull the data into a report table, and then calls the CR report viewer to display the data.
- JRC is the java Runtime Component. In CR XI, a package is supplied to install as part of the web server for doing the web report viewing withut having to install CR Enterprise.
- The original .rpt file, the report template, does not have the characters in it nor do they show up in Crystal Reports in any way that I have found to try to test.
- With using the JRC, there is no CE10 database. As noted above, CR Enterprise is not installed. As for the database that contains the report data table, it is MS SQL Server 200 with all appropriate patches applied.
I just tested extending the display field to well longer than the data but it did not help. The strange characters are still being displayed.

• Publishing a BI-report as a Widget on the CRM home page

Hello,
I'm trying to publish a BI-report on the CRM home page in the WebUI.
I've created a Widget link and added the widget to the home page.
As URL for the widget I've entered the following code:
[http://electro.marvel.local:50000/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/pcd!3aportal_content!2fcom.sap.pct!2fplatform_add_ons!2fcom.sap.ip.bi!2fiViews!2fcom.sap.ip.bi.bex?TEMPLATE=ZCRM_APP_SURV_DEMO]
When I log on to the WebUI, the Widget is displayed with the logon screen for the BI-system. (I have not set up single-sign on.)
When I log on to BI, the browser goes crazy and just refreshes and refreshes.
What could be the issue here?
Kind regards
