Apex not on Oracle Magazine Renew Survey

I just renewed my Oracle Magazine subscription today and noticed that Application Express is not listed in the survey. I know that it is part of the Oracle database, but shouldn't it be listed under the Oracle Development Tools?
Mike

I noticed the same thing this morning. Thought it was rather strange that it wasn't listed anywhere, like under Toold or Framework (I think those were the categories).

  • Apex 3.1 in Oracle Magazine

    Hi all --
I was reading the March/April edition of Oracle Magazine and ran across a blurb stating version 3.1 is available and shipping. Is this correct?
    Thanks for the information!
    Leigh

    Leigh,
No this is not correct. 3.1 is still in BETA testing. You should however be able to run through the instructions in the article using the BETA evaluation instance. Just need to request an account, here:
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=eval31
You can also of course also participate in the evaluation process, the more the merrier!

  • Latest article in Oracle Magazine..

I know is slightly off-topic, but I have a question..
When do they normally post the articles online from Oracle Magazine? I received the latest version of the magazine and wanted to download Raj's last article, and it is NOT online yet!!!
Just wondering if anyone has an idea..

    Hi Tony,
My issue just arrived today, so there must be a bit of variance :)
Any idea who will take over for Raj with Oracle Corp in regards to being the product manager for App Express?
I don't work for Oracle Corp. and I'm not privy to that sort of information, so I can't really comment with any authority. But, I do know a few of the team members and they are all very good / very bright people. Scott Spadafore is currently a PM for APEX, and I certainly don't think there is any danger of the product "falling off" or anything like that. I guess the team meetings might seem "a little less caffeinated" without Raj, though. (He has an abundance of energy and exuberance, at least when compared to me!)

  • APEX 3.2 -ORACLE 10G - PIVOT QUERY

Hello, i searched around the forum and i cound't find an answer to this specific matter, although i saw some replies that were close...
i need to creat a form based on a pivot query. but oracle 10g doesn't support that feature so i hope someone can help me.
my problem is that the number of columns will be variable. here's an example:
    ORIGINAL TABLE
    NAME     KMS     VEHICLE
    Joe     100     AUDI
    Tom     300     VW
    Mark     150     FORD
    Ann     250     FORD
    Joe     200     VW
    Tom     123     AUDI
    Mark     345     AUDI
    Ann     45     VW
    Joe     6     FORD
    Tom     67     FORD
    Mark     46     VW
    Ann     99     AUDI
    DESIRED RESULT
    Joe     Tom     Mark     Ann     Vehicle
    100     123     345     99     AUDI
    6     67     150     250     FORD
    200     300     46     45     VW
the new columns will be the values in the old NAME column. BUT these values are variable. today its joe, tom, mark and ann tomorrow it could be silvia, tony, richard, harry , william and jane. this means the usuall replies i saw, using MAX and DECODE will not apply because i never know what values or how many values are in this column. with pivot i can get this done.... how can i do this in oracle 10g? is there a way to creat a ser function Pivot somehow? ideas?
    thanks!

  • Single-step deployment article from July/August Oracle Magazine Question

    Hi,
As I worked through the article "Single-Step Deployment" on Oracle magazine July/August Issue,
I ran into a problem on substep 9 of Step 3 to
change the option of P2_MANAGER_ID with LOV.
    The error I got is
LOV query is invalid, a display and a return value are needed, the column names need to be different. If your query contains an in-line query, the first FROM clause in the SQL statement must not belong to the in-line query.
    Did anyone encounter same problem?
Any suggestion to deal with this error?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi,
Have you given your column names aliases?

    Hello,
    1. I have for example my-custom-domain.com and want that my customers use this domain to login at APEX Application at Oracle Cloud.
I don't want that my customers see https://blablabla.db.us1.oraclecloudapps.com/apex/ and see instead of my-custom-domain.com :)
How I can do it? Don't find any technical information about it...

  • Flashback in oracle magazine

I have not used Oracle as yet. We are still on the mainframe. But I was looking at ORACLE magazine article November/December issue and page 62. When doing flashback you have to shutdown oracle and then startup mount to do flashback.
    A question?
    1. In mainframe world, we do not have to bring down CICS to do restore on a certain file - mayebe just close it. All people can still use CICS except that file.
    2. Oracle do you have to take down the whole database just to do flashback and stop everybody from doing their job?
    Thanks

  • From Forms Product Management - Forms/J2EE Article in Oracle Magazine

Oracle Magazine have published a great article explaining how Forms and J2EE are providing complementary technologies. Read how one of our customer has found a good balance in building their business applications.
    Link on otn.oracle.com/products/forms
    Regards
    Grant Ronald
    Forms Product Management

I wonder if it is really difficult for Oracle to make easy the switch from Oracle Forms to Jdeveloper... ADF is a pretty nice thing... but it's not so good as Forms are in RAD for databases!
The best project from Oracle I knew about making Forms developers build lightweight web applications was Cherokee Project... That was a pretty nice project that was abandoned in favour of the new ruler... JAVA and Jdev! With the goals of project Cherokee achieved any Oracle Form developer would build that kind of apps... but not with current JDEV 10G!
I really feel that I am a "pl/sql and forms" developer, and that java makes me write too much code for something i would use one code line in forms or sometimes don't need at all to code! CMiC developers think the same! It's really slower to develop for J2EE! I switch from VB and Delphi to Forms cause Forms is the only truth RAD for database applications! And as I said lately in another posts I feel "pression" to move to another place than forms... Pression is several ways, either the new pricetag for AS EE or AS Forms only, either technological pression!
So as explained in "A Forms Break" article (http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/05-jan/o15form.html) the pression is there... They had 20 Forms developers, and now they just have 10, and have 10 Jdev developers! 6 here converted from forms to J2EE... and the others? That's one kind of pression that's made and that's real! They have to move from Forms to J2EE, cause if they don't... they'll get fired one day!
The best of the best "App Server" i know is Oracle AS... but it's also the most expensive one for people that develop database applications. When i create an application in Delphi my customers don't have to pay €20000 for licensing any app server... so it's really too much for small and middle size company's.
This article is useful to see and understand the SOD of Oracle in a global strategy and not from one perspective only... like Forms SOD perspective. I think Oracle Forms will end as a core product between 2008 and 2010. Will Oracle melt with success Oracle Forms Developers in Jdev with no pain? I believe that no more than 50% oracle developers will do it... Others will go to other technologies... most of them opensource like XUL or GnuE (Forms,Reports).
So, that's my point of view... and of course it's not the point of view of all Forms developers.

  • HELP! Can not install Oracle 8.1.5 w/ RedHat 6.1!

I can not get Oracle 8.1.5 to install onto Linux RedHat 6.1. The
Oracle installation script generates several errors. I have
tried several attempts, using different options, but they all
    generate errors.
Please help. The Oracle Installation scripts appear to be very
buggy... or perhaps they are incompatible with the standard
RedHat 6.1 release. Either way, it is very frustrating.
I have documented one of my (failed) installation attempts below.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
I am installing Oracle onto a Dell Latitude CPi PC w/ 128MB RAM,
a 366MHz Pentium II, and RedHat 6.1 (using the standard Linux
2.2.12-2 kernel). RedHat was installed using the standard "Gnome
    Workstation" configuration.
    The Oralce CD is labeled:
    "Oralce 8i Enterprise Edition
    Release 8.1.5
    for Linux
    (c) Oracle Corporation 1999"
I got this CD about one week ago at Oracle OpenWorld '99 in Los
Angeles... it should be their "latest & greatest" version so far.
    1. Pre-Installation and ./runInstall
I created an "oracle" Unix account w/ groups "oinstall" (the
primary group) and "dba" (a secondary group).
I created directories /u01 through /u04, belonging to oracle.
I setup .cshrc and sourced it, containing:
    umask 022
    setenv DISPLAY `hostname`:0
    xhost +
    setenv ORACLE_BASE /u01/app/oracle
    setenv ORACLE_HOME ${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.5
    setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest
    setenv PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
    setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib
    setenv NLS_LANG US7ASCII
    I downloaded jre116_v5 and installed to /usr/local/jre.
Finally, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    cd /mnt/cdrom
    ./runInstall
Problem: I got the error (from ./runInstall):
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre.
    Please wait...
    Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
    : Bad address
Workaround: Executed the following commands instead:
    cd /mnt/cdrom/install/linux
    ./runIns.sh
    3. runIns.sh and root.sh
I selected the following options (from ./runIns.sh):
    Source: /mnt/cdrom/stage/products.jar
    Destination: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.5.0.0
    Typical (585MB)
Installable Components: Oralce Intelligent Agent 8.1.5.0.0
    Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest
    Directory for Database Files: /u02
Then (when instructed by ./runIns.sh), I attempted to execute
    (from the
    "root" Unix account):
    cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    ./root.sh
    Problem: I got the error:
    "bash: ./root.sh: Permission denied"
The execute bit was not set.
    Workaround: I executed:
    chmod a+x root.sh
    ./root.sh
    5. Configuration Tools
The Oracle Installer (./runIns.sh) attempted to execute:
    A. Net8 Configuration Agent
    B. Oracle Database Configuration Agent
Problem: The "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" failed with
    the following error message:
"One or more tools have failed. It is recommended but not
required that these tools succeed for this installation.
You can now select these tools, read its details to examine
why they have failed, fix those problems, and retry them.
Or, you can click "Next" to continue."
When I selected the "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" for
more info, I got the following additional details (as the cause
    of the error):
"A required command line argument is missing."
    The log file
    "/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log" recorded:
"Command which is being spawned is /usr/local/jre/bin/jre

Workaround: There is obviously nothing I can do to fix this
problem. It appears to be an internal bug in ./runIns.sh.
Therefore, I selected "Next" and executed "dbassist" directly.
    6. dbassist
    I executed:
    dbassist
Problem: I got the following error:
    "JNLS Execution:oracle.ntpg.jnls.JNLSException
Unable to find any National Character Sets. Please
    check your Oracle installation."
Workaround: Press "OK" and ignore the error.
    7. dbassist (cont.)
    I selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
Copy existing database files from the CD
    Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest
Problem: I got the following error:
"CD-ROM drive not detected on this system.
    Database not created."
(Note: I've been running the installation scripts from the
CDROM drive this entire time. "df" shows the CDROM drive
mounted on /mnt/cdrom. "ls /mnt/cdrom" works too.)
Workaround: Abort (which generated the additional error: "Unable
to create database. DBCA-00003: No CD-ROM drive detected.") and
run dbassist again, this time using different parameters.
    8. dbassist, again
I executed "dbassist" again and selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
    Create new database files
    Hybrid
    Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and iM demos
    Global Database Name: cprtest2.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest2
    Create database now
Problem: I got the following error:
    "ORA-01012: not logged on"
    Workaround: Try, try again.
    9. dbassist, one last time
Executed "dbassist" once more and selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
    Create new database files
    Hybrid
    Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and interMedia
    demos
    Global Database Name: cprtest3.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest3
    Output creation script
Then, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/install
    setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest3
    ./sqlcprtest3.sh
Problem: I got the following output:

    Workaround: Beats me.
    10. sqlplus
I attempted to execute sqlplus, but got the following error
    message:
    "/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus: Permission denied."
The execute bit was not set.
    Workaround: I executed:
    chmod a+x /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus
    sqlplus
I gave up for now... there were just too many things wrong with
this installation, starting with the very first command I was
    supposed to execute (./runInstaller).
I can't fathom why Oracle's installation script has so many bugs.
Am I just doing something terribly wrong?
    Please help.

I'm using enlightenment version 0.15.5-41, which is more recent
than the 0.15.5-37 version (containing the Oracle installer
patch) that you recommended. Unfortunately, it fails when using
    this version.
I also tried installing Oracle using twm, with enlightenment
    disabled. This didn't help either.
Furthermore, the errors that I'm encountering in the OUI are
not just toward the end of the installation. They happen from
the very beginning, right after I enter "./runInstall", and
continue every step of the way.

: : RedHat 6.1 release. Either way, it is very frustrating.
: : I have documented one of my (failed) installation attempts
    : below.
: : Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
    : : I am installing Oracle onto a Dell Latitude CPi PC w/ 128MB
    : RAM,
: : a 366MHz Pentium II, and RedHat 6.1 (using the standard Linux
: : 2.2.12-2 kernel). RedHat was installed using the standard
    : "Gnome
    : : Workstation" configuration.
: : The Oralce CD is labeled:
    : : "Oralce 8i Enterprise Edition
    : : Release 8.1.5
    : : for Linux
    : : (c) Oracle Corporation 1999"
: : I got this CD about one week ago at Oracle OpenWorld '99 in
    Los
: : Angeles... it should be their "latest & greatest" version so
    : far.
    : : 1. Pre-Installation and ./runInstall
: : I created an "oracle" Unix account w/ groups "oinstall" (the
: : primary group) and "dba" (a secondary group).
    : : I created directories /u01 through /u04, belonging to oracle.
: : I setup .cshrc and sourced it, containing:
    : : umask 022
    : : setenv DISPLAY `hostname`:0
    : : xhost +
    : : setenv ORACLE_BASE /u01/app/oracle
    : : setenv ORACLE_HOME ${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.5
    : : setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest
    : : setenv PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
    : : setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib
    : : setenv NLS_LANG US7ASCII
    : : I downloaded jre116_v5 and installed to /usr/local/jre.
: : Finally, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    : : cd /mnt/cdrom
    : : ./runInstall
    : : Problem: I got the error (from ./runInstall):
: : Initializing Java Virtual Machine from
    : /usr/local/jre/bin/jre.
    : : Please wait...
    : : Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
    : : : Bad address
: : Workaround: Executed the following commands instead:
    : : cd /mnt/cdrom/install/linux
    : : ./runIns.sh
    : : 3. runIns.sh and root.sh
    : : I selected the following options (from ./runIns.sh):
    : : Source: /mnt/cdrom/stage/products.jar
    : : Destination: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    : : Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.5.0.0
    : : Typical (585MB)
: : Installable Components: Oralce Intelligent Agent 8.1.5.0.0
    : : Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    : : SID: cprtest
    : : Directory for Database Files: /u02
: : Then (when instructed by ./runIns.sh), I attempted to execute
    : : (from the
    : : "root" Unix account):
    : : cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    : : ./root.sh
    : : Problem: I got the error:
    : : "bash: ./root.sh: Permission denied"
: : The execute bit was not set.
    : : Workaround: I executed:
    : : chmod a+x root.sh
    : : ./root.sh
    : : 5. Configuration Tools
: : The Oracle Installer (./runIns.sh) attempted to execute:
    : : A. Net8 Configuration Agent
    : : B. Oracle Database Configuration Agent
: : Problem: The "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" failed
    with
: : the following error message:
: : "One or more tools have failed. It is recommended but not
: : required that these tools succeed for this installation.
: : You can now select these tools, read its details to
    examine
: : why they have failed, fix those problems, and retry them.
: : Or, you can click "Next" to continue."
: : When I selected the "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" for
: : more info, I got the following additional details (as the
    cause
    : : of the error):
: : "A required command line argument is missing."
    : : The log file
    : : "/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log"
    : recorded:
: : "Command which is being spawned is /usr/local/jre/bin/jre

: : Invalid Exit Code. The following result code will be used
    for
    : : configuration tool: 1
: : Configuration tool Oracle Database Configuration Assistant
    : : failed"
: : Workaround: There is obviously nothing I can do to fix this
: : problem. It appears to be an internal bug in ./runIns.sh.
: : Therefore, I selected "Next" and executed "dbassist"
    directly.
    : : 6. dbassist
    : : I executed:
    : : dbassist
: : Problem: I got the following error:
    : : "JNLS Execution:oracle.ntpg.jnls.JNLSException
: : Unable to find any National Character Sets. Please
: : check your Oracle installation."
: : Workaround: Press "OK" and ignore the error.
    : : 7. dbassist (cont.)
    : : I selected the following options:
    : : Create database
    : : Typical
: : Copy existing database files from the CD
    : : Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    : : SID: cprtest
: : Problem: I got the following error:
: : "CD-ROM drive not detected on this system.
    : : Database not created."
: : (Note: I've been running the installation scripts from the
: : CDROM drive this entire time. "df" shows the CDROM drive
    : : mounted on /mnt/cdrom. "ls /mnt/cdrom" works too.)
: : Workaround: Abort (which generated the additional error:
    : "Unable
: : to create database. DBCA-00003: No CD-ROM drive detected.")
    : and
: : run dbassist again, this time using different parameters.
    : : 8. dbassist, again
: : I executed "dbassist" again and selected the following
    options:
    : : Create database
    : : Typical
: : Create new database files
    : : Hybrid
    : : Concurrently connected users: 5
: : Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and iM demos
    : : Global Database Name: cprtest2.parkrussell.com
    : : SID: cprtest2
    : : Create database now
: : Problem: I got the following error:
    : : "ORA-01012: not logged on"
: : Workaround: Try, try again.
    : : 9. dbassist, one last time
: : Executed "dbassist" once more and selected the following
    : options:
    : : Create database
    : : Typical
: : Create new database files
    : : Hybrid
    : : Concurrently connected users: 5
: : Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and interMedia
    : : demos
    : : Global Database Name: cprtest3.parkrussell.com
    : : SID: cprtest3
    : : Output creation script
: : Then, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    : : cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/install
    : : setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest3
    : : ./sqlcprtest3.sh
: : Problem: I got the following output:

    : : Workaround: Beats me.
    : : 10. sqlplus
: : I attempted to execute sqlplus, but got the following error
    : : message:
    : : "/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus: Permission

: : The execute bit was not set.
    : : Workaround: I executed:
    : : chmod a+x /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus
    : : sqlplus
: : I gave up for now... there were just too many things wrong
    with
: : this installation, starting with the very first command I was
    : : supposed to execute (./runInstaller).
    : : I can't fathom why Oracle's installation script has so many
    : bugs.
: : Am I just doing something terribly wrong?
    : : Please help.

  • Why the default value is not the Oracle recommended?

Why the default value is not the Oracle recommended?
In Oracle 10g, the default alocated unit of Oracle ASM is 1MB. But the Oracle ducumentation states that "To ensure a higher probability of one
logical I/O resulting in no more than one physical I/O, the minimum stripe depth should be at least twice the Oracle block size". ---See Performance Tuniing Guide (10g10.2 Page8-3.
It's inconsistent. What is right way?

    >
    8 * 128 = 1024
    128 >= 2
At least twice the size does not mean exactly the doubled size.
There is no contradiction between the documentation and your observation in this case.
