APEX ON ORACLE ENTERPRISE EDITION

Hi
Is it possible to install Apex on Oracle Enterprise Edition, and if yes, how? Is it simple enough to run scripts or does it takes something more?

MarcusO wrote:

You need some kind of HTTP server: if you want a simple installation you have the choice of either using the Embedded PL/SQL Gateway (EPG) within the Oracle Enterprise Edition (same mechanism as with XE) or installing the Oracle HTTP server with MOD_PLSQL; instructions for either option are in the installation guide.
There is also the new/beta version Application Express Listener (as mentioned on the front page of this forum). I've not used it.

  • Identify db-functionality only available in Oracle Enterprise Edition

    Hi
    I have an application with lots of PL/SQL logic. The development database for this application is Oracle Enterprise Edition and now we are going to install the application in an Oracle Standard Edition database at customer site.
    To be prepared I want to verify if I use (and remove) any db-functinality only available in Enterprise Edition.
    Is it possible to start an Oracle Enterprise Edition database in “Standard Edition mode”? Or is there any other way to scan the code?

  • Installing BPA on remote Oracle Enterprise Edition

    Hello,
    We recently bought the BPA suite.
    We now have a Oracle DB where we have installed the BPA Repositary.
    Now I am trying to install the client.
    When I launch the OracleBPA.exe from CD1-10.1.3.271679 {The directory on the CD}. It gives me only 2 option ;
    a. Oracle Lite and b. Oracle Express Edition.
    No option for any other DB.
    Q1. Are these the only 2 options?
    Q2. How do I point the BPA installer at the remotely installed Oracle Enterprise Edition?
    thanks in advance
    -- Sanjiv

    Is this question still needing an answer?
    If so:
    You don't have to get your connection to the database during the installation. The BPA wants to know where the LOCAL Database is and if it's a Lite or XE. If you are working mostly on the Server i would do the installation with the Lite version.
    Once you have installed the BPA Suite on the computer, start it, change to the explorer module, right-click on "server" and choose "add server". In the wizard enter the name or the IP of the server with the database. That's it!

  • Oracle Enterprise Edition Database Option Licensing

    Does anyone know if there is an official Oracle document regarding licensing of Oracle Enterprise Edition Licensing options?
    If you for example install Oracle Enterprise Edition, do a standard install, a number of Enterprise options get installed, for example Partitioning and OLAP.
    Both of those options are license extras.
    So if they are installed but not used, should they still be licensed?
    Does anyone know the official line on this?

    Welcome to the forums !
    AFAIK, as long as these extra options are not used, you should be ok - but the best/correct answer will be given by your Oracle salesperson. Answers offered in these forums will not stand up in a court of law :-)

  • Restoring an Oracle Enterprise Edition DB into XE for use with APEX

    Hello, we're just in the process of decomissioning a load of servers and I came across an old Oracle DB box which has an install of APEX (well, HTMLDB) and a backend DB on an Enterprise Edition server, after battling with Oracle for 2 days I finally managed to get it to a state where I think it's restored successfully onto XE but up on the final "startup" I was presented with:
    ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced
    ORA-39712: XE edition server cannot open database
    I really want\need to get this DB off of this server, because as you all probably know - Oracle DB EE isn't exactly cheap, and seen as though it's used for this historical app I kinda need to get it off of this hardware\software and into a low-end VM for it to chug away happily and be accessed when needs be...
    Another option I though of, if I were to do a reinstall of XE, and then data pump the info from the EE to XE? Would that work?
    I apologies for any numptiness in this question, but I really haven't got any experience with Oracle - and it's been a learning curve of much frustration coming from my easy to use MSSQL interfaces!
    The steps I took were:
    1) Run nid to rename the DB from "XE" to "ESTALTST"
    a) Do some faffing about with tnsnames and listener.ora to get it to realise ESTALTST
    2) Take a backup of logs\db from source
    3) Catalog the backups
    4) Restore control file
    5) A lot of messing about getting the DB happy with the structures of things
    6) recover database;
    7) alter database resetlogs; <- this is where it said I had to do startup upgrade;
    8) shutdown immediate; startup upgrade;
    9) Where I am now.
    Thanks,
    Rich.

    Just wondering, if the DB files are about 1Gb, should my dump file be 157Mb?I don't know, that depends on the actual amount of data stored in your database.
    The filesize is no reliable measure for this. To give you a simple example: You have a "order entry" schema where you started storing your data 10 years ago. You initialized your data files with just a few megs and let Oracle do the extension automatically, so it grew and grew and is about 1 GB today. Now you decide that you don't need data that is older than two years in that schema and delete all outdated data. After you did that, your data files still be that 1 GB, though you only use about 20 percent of it. Oracle doesn't shrink your data files automatically...
    To get a good estimation, you can run something like
    SELECT f.file_name,
                            CEIL( f.bytes / 1024 / 1024 ) "SIZE_MB",
                            CEIL( f.bytes / 1024 / 1024 ) - FLOOR( SUM( NVL( fs.bytes, 0 ) ) / 1024 / 1024 ) "USED_MB",
                            FLOOR( SUM( NVL( fs.bytes, 0 ) ) / 1024 / 1024 ) "FREE_MB",
                            CEIL( f.maxbytes / 1024 / 1024 ) "MAX_MB"
                       FROM dba_free_space fs,
                            dba_data_files f
                      WHERE fs.file_id(+)     = f.file_id
                   GROUP BY f.file_name,
                            f.bytes,
                            f.maxbytes,
                            f.blocks,
                            f.maxblocks,
                            f.autoextensible
                   ORDER BY f.file_name;to see how much space is actually used in your data files. Note that this doesn't necessarily mean that your dump has to have that size. There are a few aspects (like compression) that could cause a difference...

  • Guide to installing XE and Apex on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 (64 bit)

    I have just been through a time consuming and frustrating process of installing Oracle XE 10gR2 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 x86-64 and I want to share my experience so that others can benefit from it and overcome the same problems more quickly.
    Prior to starting I had installed OEL 5.3 and been using it for a few days. The system I am using is a home built box with an AMD Phenom X4 955 Black Edition, 8 Gb RAM, Highpoint RR2680 RAID controller with 4 1TB disks in a RAID5 array and an additional 320Gb HDD storing the OS. I am using KDE3.5 on the desktop.
    The main problem I encountered was with SELinux. As I eventually intend to have this system exposed on the Internet I was reluctant to switch it off despite having read extensively about the issues surrounding it and Oracle. I had several failed attempts at the installation process before succumbing to the reality that SELinux and Oracle are not happy bedfellows. I decided to switch SELinux to permissive mode having followed the advice here.
    I found a very helpful guide to installing XE on Linux here as part of the installation of an application called Spacewalk. Note that you do not need to complete the whole Spacewalk installation, but just follow the instructions in the linked page.
    Before you start you need to ensure that the UID of your oracle user is less than 500. Mine was 500, so I used the following commands to fix this:
    usermod -u 250 oracle
    find / -uid 500 -exec chown oracle {} \;
    These change the oracle UID to 250 (but check that isn't already used first!) and the find command searches for all files that were owned by oracle (but weren't after the usermod cmd) and changes them back to oracle's ownership.
    Now follow the Spacewalk instructions until you reach the Server Setup section. Before you do this you need to make a couple of changes to the script /etc/init.d/oracle-xe. I found these changes in various places, such as [link(1)|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1345771&#1345771] and [link(2)|http://dbataj.blogspot.com/2008/08/lblibrarypath-is-not-set-on-startup.html].
    Note that in link(1) the oracle-xe-selinux packages installed have the same effect as the chcon command on the shared libraries so it isn't necessary to perform this step.
    Open /etc/init.d/oracle-xe in vi (or your favourite editor) and do the following:
    line 49: change /bin/su to /sbin/runuser
    after line 52 (export PATH...) add the following lines:
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    There are further changes recommended to /etc/init.d/oracle-xe in [this post|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3201491&#3201491] but I haven't done them yet.
    Having done the above changes you can now configure Oracle XE by running /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure (as root!). As I have Apache Tomcat running on port 8080 I changed the default HTTP port to 8500 but kept the listener on its default port of 1521. Once the confuration script is done you will need to change the ports SELinux uses for Oracle as follows:
    semanage port -d -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 9000 - deletes port 9000, which is the SELinux default port for Apex
    semanage port -a -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 1521 - ensure that listener port is OK (assuming you used default of 1521, change accordingly if you didn't)
    semanage port -a -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 8500 - add the new Apex HTTP port to SELinux
    After all this running:
    semanage port -l | grep oracle
    should show you:
    oracle_port_t tcp 1521, 8500
    I ignored the TNSNAMES.ORA part of the Spacewalk instructions and proceeded with the 'Client setup on 64bit platform' and 'Configuring sqlplus' sections.
    For the latter I created a bash script which I have made available in the oracle user and my own user's home directories:
    cat > configure_oracle_10g_xe.sh
    ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server
    PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    ORACLE_SID=XE
    export ORACLE_HOME ORACLE_SID PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    I did this as I intend to install other Oracle databases, e.g. 11gR2, on this box later so I didn't want to put the above in .bashrc.
    Having done the above you should be able to log into the database using sqlplus and the XE setup is complete.
    The upgrade of Apex 2.2 to Apex 3.2.1 was fairly painless so I won't go into much detail about it - just follow the instructions provided by Oracle.
    The only issue I had was right at the end of the process and is documented and answered in [this thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=958611&tstart=0].
    That's it - I hope somebody will find this useful.

    On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
    So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.
    Sorry

    Hope this helps

  • Database link between Oracle Standard Edition and Oracle Enterprise Edition

    Hi,
    I am looking at setting up a data transfer process between an Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition database and an Oracle 11g Standard Edition database. Database links would be required each way.
    I heard once that this is not permitted as connecting Standard to Enterprise via a DB Link means that the Standard Edition database would now need an Enterprise license.
    I have searched around but can't find anything to confirm this. Am I being mislead by this information? Is it permitted to

When a db-1 has a link pointing to db-2, as far as db-2 is concerned db-1 is just another client .. no different than sqlplus. If you have an Enterprise Edition database, of course it will need to be properly licensed. But that doesn't mean all of its clients (including a SE database) have to be EE licensed.
    But even my reply is just something you read on the internet. Licensing questions can only be definitively answered by Oracle itself. Ultimately you will need to put your hands on an official Oracle document or a written statement from someone authorized to make such statements.
