APEX TRAINING

Hi All,
i am new to APEX....
i am looking for some training on APEX(online or class room)....i have completed "apex 2 day developer guide " with a hosted apex environment at ORACLE.
Please suggest me some good trainings scheduled in near this month or oct which you know....
Is there any good book available in the market on APEX.....
Thanks in advance
APEX newbie

Hi,
Scott Spendolini offers a great training session: http://sumnertechnologies.com/ I know he's also offering some online courses (click on the "Training" tab at the top).
There's also the book that John Scott and Scott Spendolini just wrote: Pro Oracle Application Express (search for it on Amazon)
We've had him come for training twice and have received a lot of positive feedback from my colleagues.

  • Any good APEX training class in NJ?

    Hi,
I'm a newbie to APEX. I'm at the point that I think I could use some serious APEX training.
what's your thought on APEX training? Did you folks just pick it up by yourself? How? BTW, the thousands of pages of User Manual/Advanced Tutorial do NOT help much, sometimes, they could be even confusing.
Any pointer to any good APEX training classes in NJ is appreciated. For some reason, APEX training in NJ is not on Oracle University's schedule. Or any other alternative? via video?
    Thanks much,
    Helen

I took the first two courses on APEX from DBCON (http://www.dbcon.com/courses.html). It's an online course which I'm not a huge fan of normally, but these two courses were helpful for me. The courses also included the "Pro Oracle Application Express" book which has also been helpful for me:

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no relationship with DBCON whatsoever. Just my two bits.

    Hi Tony,
Australia would be great... have always liked to go there, but it's a very very long flight for me.
Maybe AE needs to really consider a world tour now.
John, it's not really that you need to convince me, but my family ;-)

  • Oracle APEX advanced training through Oracle University partner

    Hello,
Has anyone ever taken the Advanced Workshop for APEX training offered on Oracle University through Oracle partner TransAmerica Training?
Oracle Application Express: Advanced Workshop | Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX) | Database Application Developm…
I'm really excited to get some expert advanced knowledge and wanted to see if anyone had used this training or was planning on attending (They're in Ft Lauderdale and it's scheduled for mid-January, so I'm also excited to get out of the northeast winter for a week).
    Thanks.

  • Apex 3 + BI Publisher - how to make the most of it?

    Hi there
For evaluation purposes, I have downloaded and installed the standalone version of BI Publisher 10.1.3.3.2 in my machine. I modified the Apex settings to use BIP instead of Apache FOP that I was using before.
All is working fine. When I click the Print link, I get the a PDF file.
But the problem is exactly this: all is working fine... as before! I cannot see any obvious advantage of using BIP instead of FOP. I cannot see any new property that I can set or anything like this.
So, what new features are available to me in this new scenario? How to make the most of BIP and Apex? Is it something that I need to do on the BIP side rather than in Apex side? I need to justify the cost of BIP... ;)
    Any advice will be welcome...
    Cheers,
    Luis

    Hi Luis,
Difficult question to answer in the forums, since it's very much a 'visual wow' factor seeing the BIP integration in action.
However, going into marketting-mode for a moment (please excuse me, I don't do it often!), APEX Evangelists are holding some advanced APEX Training in London in March in which Dimitri Gielis will be doing a masterclass session in APEX/BIP and FOP integration (amongst many other things).
Here's a direct link to the training for more information -
    http://eurotraining.apex-evangelists.com
Like I say, it's a difficult question to answer in the forum, however just sitting and watching someone who knows their way around the products is usually enough to provide a pretty convincing argument to management on why that big BIP fee might be justified!
    Hope this helps,
    John.

  • Looking for APEX tutoring (with pay) in NJ - urgent -

    Hi,
I'm a newbie to APEX, and trying to get the project up and running. I can get a simple form up, but the project I'm doing is more than a simple form. I have not got a chance to get any training yet. Looking for APEX tutoring in NJ with pay.
    Please let me know promptly.
    Appreciated,
    Helen

    Helen,
First of all, welcome to the forums and the wonderful world of APEX development.
Before recommending anything, it would be really good to know a little bit about your background and how comfortable you are with Oracle, SQL, and PL/SQL. If you're completely new to Oracle (i.e. you've been working with EXCEL and ACCESS), I would recommend a completely different path than someone who is coming at this from a long history of Oracle Forms development, and different again form someone that has Java or other Web development experiene.
Can you help us out with some information about your programming background?
In general, I agree with Don. The 2 Day developer and Advanced Tutorial white papers will give you a good start, by letting you peek under the covers of what is possible with Application Express. There are also a couple good books that might help depending on where you're coming from and what your skill level is.
However, there is nothing like getting yourself into a learning environment that allows you to ask questions specific to what you're trying to achieve in the real world.
The company I work for ( [Sumner Technologies|www.sumnertech.com] ) also provides APEX training at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. We can provide these classes in a public forum, as private on-site classes, or we also provide instructor lead online training classes as well. We have several classes scheduled through the end of the year so check [http://www.sumnertech.com/training|http://www.sumnertech.com/training] for a list of available courses and our public/Online schedule).
What course best suits you will obviously depend on where you're starting from, but we can definitely help there.
Feel free to give us a call at (703) 879-4615. We'll be happy to help.

  • Market opportunities for Apex services ...

As some of you may have already noticed, I do like Apex a lot and think this is an excellent tool to produce high quality web applications - fast.
But I am getting a bit frustrated about the market opportunities for Application Express, especially when I think about myself as a consultant.
I get the impression that is is quite difficult to be hired as a consultant for Apex. It is mainly used for small internal systems, many of them for administrative purposes. It is for free (or at least included in the Oracle license). Mainly internal staff is working on it, there aren't that many (visible) projects out there.
When it comes to developing web applications, it is either J2EE or .Net, especially with larger customers. And a bit of PHP/Python. Period.
What do you think customers would be willing to pay good money for? Apex is for free, why spend lots of money for external consultants/developers?
I was working previously with Oracle Internet Application Server, focusing on Oracle Portal. It has sooo many bugs and shortcomings. Migrations to the newest release are really a pain. But since the customer spent a lot of money on the product, they are willing to spend a lot of money for people to make it work. This is crazy but this is the way it is.
My bottom line so far is to (1) bid for fixed priced projects and (2) build applications based on Apex / Oracle XE for sale.
    What is your opinion?
What services, prebuilt applications, perhaps themes could be of value that somebody would be willing to pay money for it?
    Thanks,
    ~Dietmar.

    Here's my take it...
I decided to start providing commercial hosting for ApEx applications a while back when I couldn't find anyone offering the sort of service I wanted. The market for ApEx hosting is quite small (when compared to the usual PHP/MySQL type of hosting companies), but there are a few of us around (there's a list on the Wiki for anyone interested - http://wiki.shellprompt.net/bin/view/Apex/HostingExamples).
I've also recently become more involved in ApEx Training and Consultancy types of roles, again it's a very small market and most people still seem to be at the "I'm evaluating this technology and I'd like to talk to someone about it" sort of stage. As I mentioned in another thread, almost everyone who I've shown ApEx to is impressed (with the product, not me necessarily ;) but you still face the age old problem of overcoming resistance to using it.
I've lost count of the number of sites I've seen with "Amazon Envy', by which I mean that they have a (relatively simple) project to do, but they've gone the whole "We need a dozen application servers and Java Beans everywhere", when a simple ApEx application could have been done in a fraction of the time and a fraction of the cost.
I see two distinct markets where ApEx development is concerned -
    1) Big developments, where the client already uses (or wishes to use) Oracle
    2) Small 'stealth' developments, where the client really doesn't care what language/database is used. So you get to use ApEx almost transparently.
I've found that being able to demonstrate the usefulness of ApEx in situation 2 can lead to promoting ApEx for situation 1. For example, using the familiar demonstration of just how quickly and easily you can migrate from an Excel spreadsheet to an ApEx application can then open some doors by 'extending' the application.
I think the key thing is that there's two sides to the promotion of Apex
    1) The promotion of ApEx itself
    2) The promotion of Applications *written* in ApEx, where the enduser may actually have no idea that ApEx was used. Once there are more applications out there, it should lead to more interest in the tool.
Also I think there definitely is a market for 'shrink-wrapped' ApEx applications, there's no reason why someone couldn't write a Payroll app for example in ApEx (if they haven't already).
I personally would get involved in helping with a shrink-wrapped product written in ApEx, heck I'd even stump up the hosting for free.

  • Create datasrouce to apex under BI publisher

apex is v4, DB is 10G
Can anyone share how you create a datasource under bi pusblisher for apex ? What we are trying to accompolish is using BI publisher desktop to create layout files. To do so we need to connect to apex datasource. Apex authentication is workspace specific, what is the best practice ? Do you just create an account that can read everything from the top, then use this account to make connection ? If you have any docs, I would appreciate too.
    Can you help ? Thanks

  • Announcing the 2007 Application Express Training Conference

    All,
Sumner Technologies, LLC in conjunction with ODTUG will be sponsoring a 2 or 3 day ApEx Training Conference sometime in early 2007. This training conference will be held in conjunction with Steven Feuerstein's PL/SQL conference. (http://oracleplsqlprogramming.com/opp2005.php)
Very few details have been worked out yet - heck, we don't even have a real name! What we do know is that we're targeting sometime in February 2007, most likely in San Francisco. The conference will also have some members of the Oracle ApEx Development team participating. I do not know how much it will cost at this point, either.
The format will likely be 1/3 lecture, 2/3 hands-on training. We have not finalized a list of topics yet - that's what this thread is all about. Please reply and let us know what you'd like to spend some time on - from themes to security, or anything in between.
Our thought was to cater to the more advanced users of ApEx, but I'd be interested to see if there are enough "newbies" who would consider attending if we were to offer an Intro to ApEx track.
    Thanks,
    - Scott -

I have literally just started "playing" with APEX on the oracle hosted site, while working at getting it installed in one of my crash and burn sandboxes, for a little proof-of-concept work.
I definitely think this is a great idea, but if the sessions end up leaning towards the advanced users, I doubt I'd benefit from many of theml. A bit off topic, but as an example, I'm having a bugger of a time just getting an uploaded image to display on a report page... have read the forums, read the help, scanned through the Oracle Press "Handbook" and I'm still stumped.
I would suggest a "track" that takes you from start to finish in building an application.... when to use the wizards versus when it's better to do it manually... how to tweak a wizard built application.
Building a pure reporting application versus one which provides the CRUD functionality.... and allowing the user to dynamically "filter" the data displayed on a report page based on text values, date ranges, etc. (thanks to Scott's TRACKER application I managed to figure out the text part -- but will that perform when I have 30-100K rows of data?)
How to migrate a 1.x application to 2.x or 3.x
I'm sure I'll have other thoughts as I play more with the tool.
    Other logistical considerations...
    - the more reasonable the price, the more likely you'll get attendees that have to pay for it out of their own pocket
    - including the weekend as conference days minimizes the amount of vacation we'll need to take when our management won't pay us for a training day
    - Airfares are pretty expensive these days...consider taking the end result on the road [ Mid-Atlantic is drivable for me ;-)  ]

  • Error in updatable report

    Hi All,
I need to add validation to updatable report.
As the report doesnot have items, I am using collection package.
    eg:
    select
    htmldb_item.select_list_from_query(9,em_agent,'select em_agent, em_agent from IBM_MANAGED_DATABASES') em_agent,
    htmldb_item.select_list_from_query(10,em_in_scope,'select em_in_scope, em_in_scope from IBM_MANAGED_DATABASES') em_in_scope
    from "#OWNER#"."IBM_MANAGED_DATABASES" d, ibm_servers s
    where d.server = s.server
When I run the page, I am getting an error
    report error:
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
The same thing I implemented on emp ,dept tables in apex training instance and it works.
Can anyone please address where I am going wrong in actual implementation.
    Thanks.

    Sarvani,
I am sorry I did not get you "or change your handle to show it".I mean go to the Control Panel link (top right of on my page) and make your handle something like "Sarvani". While you are there click "Show" for your name and put at least your first name there. Messages are a lot easier to track when they are associated with human-sounding names.
Is that you are pointing to the way I explained the problem.I don't know what you mean by that.
My report has 1045 columns...1045 rows
and as you suggested I used apex_item.popupkey_from_query...I first suggested that you try select_list_from_query_xl. Did you try that? I don't think it will help because you are returning so many rows but you could try it.
Then you tried the popupkey_from_query. I am not clear if the page doesn't run and gives a 404 or if the page runs and the popup page gets a 404.
When you put the test case on apex.oracle.com, we will be debugging the popup item but it will be much easier if you can first check your Apache logs on your system and get the error message.

    SPICE_HUNTER1 SH_PURCHASING_VW VEND_NOTES NO NO NO
VENDOR_ID and ITEM_ID are the pks for those tables. I'm guessing I need to add a VENDOR_ID and an ITEM_ID to the VENDOR_ITEM table, then write a couple of update statements to get those fields popluated with their respective data. I'm reading up on 'key-preserved' tables and it's making sense. You will probably laugh, but I AM the "DBA." I'm actually the report developer for our company and we're trying out APEX to see if we can use it to redo a bunch of old poorly-designed Access databases. I'm flying by the skin of my teeth, the seat of my pants, and a bunch of deep sighs. I went through the basic APEx training about a year ago, am designing tables as I go only through my knowledge of query/report writing and keep coming up against things in APEX that keep me saying, "Huhhhhhhh?"
Our purchasing department has an old poorly designed Access DB from which they can search vendors or items then see the results on one page. They need to be able to view the three areas of notes based on each search, i.e. they search by item then get this:
    Item # and Description
    Item Specific Notes Text Area
    Vendor # and Name
    Vendor Item Notes Text Area
    Vendor Specific Notes Text Area
They search by Vendor they get this:
    Vendor # and Name
    Vendor Specific Notes Text Area
    Item # and Description
    Vendor Item NOtes Text Area
    Item Speicfic Notes Text Area
Then, they need to be able to update those fields with any new information and that needs to update to their respective tables. I'm sure it's easy, and I'm sure it has to do with my LIMITED prowess of setting up my tables and learning that I can't have one form update more than one table (I learned that somewhere on this journey, hence the tries with the view) so I keep getting these ideas of how to do it, then running into snags.
    So thanks for your help!

  • Bug editing report attributes in Firefox

Has anybody logged this problem before?
It occurs in Apex 2.2 and 3.0 and FireFox 2.2, but I cannot reproduce it using IE6.
Open a page with a report region and go to the report attributes.
Look at the Headings Type and remember the setting.
Edit one of the columns using the "pencil icon".
Go back to the report attributes using the back button in the browser.
    The Headings Type has changed!
This can cause you to lose your custom headings.
    Rob

from someone who clearly knew HTMLDB/Apex inside and out I'd say 'clearly not' if they said it wouldn't work on other browsers than IE ;)
Unless you're misquoting or mis-remembering what they actually said then that statement you heard was in direct conflict with the "Supported Browsers" section of the documentation -
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32472_01/doc/relnotes.300/b32465/toc.htm#BGBCEGBI
    which quotes -
To view or develop Oracle Application Express applications, Web browsers
must support JavaScript and the HTML 4.0 and CSS 1.0 standards. The
    following browsers meet this requirement:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher (Windows only)
Firefox 1.0 or higherI'll also add that 'officially supported' and 'will work' are actually two different things. I use a Mac and my browser of choice is usually Safari or Firefox and whilst Safari is not 'officially supported' the APEX Application Builder works absolutely fine (the SQL Workshop does not work though). However pretty much every application that I develop with APEX will also work in Safari quite happily.
not like those fly by night trainers who just go on the course themselves to teach it the next >week straight from the notes as I've seen on a few of the coursesI'm not sure who you're referring to specifically, but as with any course the best people (I have found) to teach are those people who do use the product day in and day out and have a passion for it, so perhaps it's another good opportunity to point out the following link -
    European APEX Training
    http://eurotraining.apex-evangelists.com/
    (end of shameless self-advertising ;)
There are also many other great teaching courses around, including the event at ODTUG -
    http://www.odtugapextraining.com/
and trust me...you won't hear anyone saying things like "APEX doesn't work in anything else but IE" at any of these training events ;)
