Apogee Question:  Ensemble vs Rosetta

Hi! This is my first post. I just ordered a mac pro, and am going to switch from cubase to Logic Pro (this is a good move, right?) I know the ensemble is integrated, and has a lot of ins and outs, but do you think a Rosette 200 would be a smarter move? I really only need to record 2 tracks at a time, and can get a patch bay. What do you think?

Do you need the Ensemble preamps? If you already have outboard pres, and just need converters for your budget, I'd invest in the best possible converters, and add/use preamps to suit my needs, rather than a 'packaged' all-in-one box like the Ensemble.
I believe the Rosetta 200 is the same as the 800 with 6 less channels. I used to have the 800 and liked it - until I upgraded to the AD/DA 16X and it seemed that the different clock (same as Big Ben) made a fairly substantial difference.
If I only needed 2 channels of converters I'd go with the Benchmark AD/DA boxes. I used these recently and I was very impressed: to me they were 'more open' than the Apogees and getting close to Prisms.
http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/products/converters.html
More expensive than a Rosetta 200 by $800 but to me seemed worth it.
I haven't used an Ensemble. But if you don't need all its 'extras' then maybe you should opt for the best quality conversion.

  • Recording Vocals - MBox or Apogee's Ensemble

    Hi
I use the MBox (the old baby blue one - with the focusrite preamps - others say it´s not really focusite - i don´t know - but Focusrite is standing under the digidesign logo).
A friend of mine purchased the Apogee's popular Ensemble which I could borrow from him. This would cost me some extra time of settings etc, but no money?
Would you people go for the apogee or stay by the mbox, when it comes to vocal recordings?
    Thanks for opinions

Why not go for both? Set up, record, and listen, and then decide.

  • Still confused: Apogee Ensemble or Symphony or Rosetta or ? with new setup

I'm planning on buying a MacBook Pro and Logic Studio.
I'm confused, though, as to which Apogee interface to buy.
Most of what I will be doing with either be:
    (1) 1 track at a time where I have my Shure KSM44 mic plugged into my Universal Audio SOLO/610 tube preamp, and that going into the Apogee interface. I think in this case, even the Duet would suffice.
    (2) 8 drum mics plugged into my Focusrite OctoPre (8-channel preamp); I assume, then, that I will go ADAT out into the Apogee interface, right? In this case, the Duet is out because it has no such interface.
So, do I get Ensemble, Symphony, Rosetta, X-this or that? I'm confused. I think the Ensemble is the right answer, but if my OctoPre goes into the Apogee via ADAT, I'll never need 8 channels of input, right? So do I get one of the others? Also, would one of those other require that ExpressCard so can connect to my MacBook Pro?
I heard that maye the Rosetta or Symphony or both had better A/D converters than the Ensemble, but not sure.
Thanks for whomever can straighten me out.. I appreciate it.

Either the Ensemble or the Rosetta 800 would suit your needs fine, but to make it work with the Rosetta 800, you'd also need the optional X-firewire card. Symphony is out unless you have a BIG budget, because it is designed to be used with external converters, meaning it still requires a Rosetta or an AD-16, etc.
    Points to consider:
    1) Rosetta is stated to be a step up from the Ensemble in terms of converter quality. I have an Ensemble and I think it is VERY good from a converter standpoint though.
    2) Rosetta has no headphone outputs, but Ensemble has 2 independent headphone outs.
    3) Rosetta has 8 channels of ADAT SMUX I/O (at 88.1 or 96k), while Ensemble has only 4 at 88.1 or 96k. However, for normal ADAT I/O (44.1 or 48k), both units have 8 channels.
    4) Rosetta has no microphone preamps, but Ensemble has 4 very good ones. In your setup, that means a Rosetta would need to use your Octopre inputs, and I'm pretty sure the Octopre isn't as good as the Apogee converters. Still, because you need 8 at a time, then you'd still need to use at least 4 preamps from your Octopre along with Ensemble since Ensemble only has 4 preamps.
    5) Budget: If budget is a concern, there's no question that the Ensemble is the best choice because the street price difference between an Ensemble (about $1950) and an X-Firewire equipped Rosetta 800 (about $305) is about $1100. Plus, with Rosetta, you still need to buy a headphone preamp and either run it alongside Rosetta, or sacrifice one of the Rosetta outputs to be used for headphones.
    I hope this helps.

  • Logic Pro 7 with MOTU 828 or Apogee Ensemble??

I've been using Logic with MOTU's 828MKII interface for about 4 years now. Since couple of days go, the 828 keeps freezing. I had to turn unit off and turn it back on and it starts to work again, but freezes again couple seconds later. I've talked to MOTU guys and they told me to switch voltage back and forth and try again. Same thing.
I finally came to 2 option.
    1. Send the unit to MOTU and get it fixed and hope to work with it without anymore problem in the future.
    2. Get the new MOTU 828MKIII
    3. Get Apogee's Ensemble audio interface. (this one is really pricey for me)
    What do you guys think?
Should I just get 828MKii fixed or try new gears..?
    I'm a starting film/TV composer/producer and beginning to
    do quite large projects.
    My set up is
-G5 Quad PowerPC with 2.5GB RAM
-250GB main hardrive, 500GB second internal hardrive
    -Yamaha HS50M Speaker
    -Yamaha S90ES Synthesizer
    -Apple Cinema 23inch
-Running Logic Pro 7 with bunch of samples
and plug-ins in my second internal hard drive.
    Share your opinions please.
    Thanks
    Chris

Motu use to make one of the most reliable drivers in industry. If you're happy with it and can get it fixed... so why not stick with it for a while?
On the other hand the new Apogee's software seems to be really solid and Ensemble's converters are much better than MKII.
So get the 828 fixed, stick with it for a while, save some cash, buy the Ensemble, dump the old 828.
    Hope that helps

  • Mac Pro - Oct Core? and other questions......

Hi all, Im new to these forums - I am one half of a UK production duo named big mister music.
We are about to bite the bullet and make a new mac pro purchase and at the same time go for an apogee ensemble. My question is two fold really, is the oct core worth paying extra for? In real world terms.... and the ensemble? Anyone used one? Worth the cash?
Brilliant! thanks for your replies in advance and I hope to make a positive impact on these boards in the future!
    Ian

Now after going to the leading Mastering house in the U.K.
they Master all the Big Names, i don't even want to say,
    however here goes,
they gave me two of the Main dealers in the U.K. that supply not most but All the store's in the U.K. with Apogee and the other Apogee & RME.
So after calling Apogee in the U.K. main supplier before on price's of Ensemble and Rosetta 800, without a doubt 800 came out on top,
Ensemble not even close in their line of Converters,
I try to ask for Discount has a Student, as i though it was a Apple Product,
    they weren't having it,
has it was said its not a Apple product, but made for Apple Logic,
    and integrate well with Logic,
therefore their goes my discount out the window!
Now after i got the numbers for the main dealers, before i ask for discount
they gave me Discount when they say who gave the number,
meaning its not who you know but who knows you.
Ensemble was a few £ short of 1400.00 new price £1050.00
Rosetta price drop by about £200 though.
Then again there was a Blind test of Apogee Rosetta 800 v RME Fireface800,
with Apogee customers, and guess what?
About 90% of them pick RME 800,
do a google search and you'll find it,
In saying this Fireface 800 and Top-line Apogee products is Marginally different,
So it all boils down to the type of sound you want,
One ads Color, while the other is transparent,
    Apogee Ads RME Transparent

  • Whats the best Audio Interface to use with Logic and MacBook Pro?

I currently own a Line 6 Pod X3 Pro and although its much better than the Eleven Rack (what an overrated piece of junk in a pretty candy coating, more fizz than club soda and still no balls. Some say it just needs a cheap overdrive box to do the trick. I say how can it possibly be worth a Grand if a cheap added piece of equiptment is needed to improve the sound?) It's still not exactly top notch, to say the least.
I was really considering the SSL (Solid State Logic) XLogic Alpha-Link MADI, a 24 channel high-end AD/DA Converter. It's somewhat pricy, but you can't possibly find a bigger bang for your buck, however I don't really need that many channels. I'm really going for quality over quantity, but I'll pay for the extra inputs if there's no way around getting top of the line otherwise.

Thanks but I already figured it out, or rather B&H did for me. Firstly, to use the SSL with a DAW you'll need to use the Extreme "PCIe card" which neither notebooks or iMacs accomodate. So unless I want to dish out an additional $1,500 for an RME laptop interface (with built in PCIe card) for this interface i'm shoot out of luck, boo! I was really looking foreward to that set up.
However, to answer my own question (and save a couple hundred bucks) you simply can't beat Apogee's Ensemble, which is built specifically for Mac. Much simpler - no drivers needed, and I actually understand the specs, 16 channels, and 4 of which even have transparent mic preamps. And its only $200 more than the Rosetta (only 2 channels, and nothing but converters - no preamps).
The main thing I also wanted was to have as least components as possible going into Logic. I already passed my "gear collecting phase," and the more I added the worst it sounded. I was already forewarned of such results, but when your a newbe like I was I guess you have to find out for yourself. So I'll be getting rid of my Line 6 POD X3 Pro; dbx 1066; Presonus Eureka; Aphex 204; and 8821 Sonic Maximizer ( I already got rid of the 11-Rack, good riddence!
And replacing them all with an Avalon 737 - anything that sounds that good over YouTube has gotta kill - and the guy from B&H said "thats one SWEET set up!" Of course every body knows Apogee and Avalon are no brainers (if you've got the patience to save up for the good stuff) but I'm more of a best kept secret type of guy (or try to be) however this time I don't mind conforming. Taylored quality and simplicity...Perfect...what more can a guy (or girl) ask for (now if I can only get my hands on some Vienna Symphonic Orchestra Software to pick up the slack where Logic is lacking.)
I just want to stop with the learning every new gadget nonesense already and get back to being a musician again.
PS How do I switch this topic to the Logic forum? I'm sure it will be more helpful to others there.

  • Can anyone recommend an audio device for Garage Band?

For the past three years I used Windows and Cubase LE with my Tascam US-122 for multitrack recording. A month ago, I finally switched to MAC (so good!) and my US-122 worked pretty good with GarageBand, except for a milisecond recording latency issue that I was almost willing to live with. Also, my US-122's headphone jack no longer worked so I decided to try the newer tascam US-144 so I could use head phones and to see if it would cure my latency issue. The headphones are ok, but now I get buzzing and hissing when I play back multi-track recordings in both GB and Cubase LE. This is so annoying I haven't even tested the latency problem. I'm ready to send back my US-144 and get something that is known to work well with the MAC OS and GB and eventually Logic Express. Any recommendations?

I "second" Hangtime's recommendation for a Firewire interface. Generally, Firewire interfaces are more reliable, although they are also usually more expensive. If you are serious about recording, and plan to migrate to Logic, it may be worth it for you to spring for a Firewire interface.
You might want to check out the selection on a major retailer's site like Sweetwater Sound. Their website is www.sweetwater.com, and they have just about everything, so it's a great place to check out what's out there. Their sales reps are also pretty knowledgeable (well, some are), but if you call them, make sure they don't sell you anything you don't want!
Budget is obviously a key factor in making a decision. If what you're after is rock solid performance, I've found RME interfaces (the Fireface 800 or the smaller Fireface 400) absolutely rock solid. Apogee's Ensemble and Duet offer very good sound quality sound for the price, but are still more than twice as much as interfaces offering similar features (but not the sound quality). For interfaces at a lower price point offering great bang for the buck, I like M-Audio and Presonus.

A CAD application I have used for years suddenly slowed down to a crawl.  It is virtually unusable.  My other apps seem ok.
The application in question runs under Rosetta since it is a PPC app.
I have plenty of disk space and nothing obvious has changed.  Any ideas how to resolve this problem will be appreciated.

    Welcome to Discussions, nils
    (1) External iSight can be difficult to use with other Firewire devices or certain AV software.
    More info: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage6.html
If you must use iSight with the hardware or software that is causing your conflict, perhaps adding a separate Firewire card for your external iSight will help you.
    (2) Searching Discussions shows that other users have also encountered problems with Apogee Ensemble:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9877690

My web search for "Apogee Ensemble known issues Mac OS X" returned several other items.
Although none of the posts that I saw specifically addressed your external iSight issue, something in one of them may give you ideas if your problem is not otherwise resolved.
    (3) If you have not already done so, check Apogee's Ensemble FAQs for relevant info:

  • And suddenly there was......silence!

    Hi guys,
Anyone out there help. I'm running Logic 7.0 Academic on an imac g5. Powered down last night and all was good. Powered up this morning and all was not! No sound at all from internal synths - track's running Intakt, Altered states, Vapor, ES1 and 2 - or Audio tracks.
I have an MBox and CoreAudio seems fine - it's seeing it and recognizing it. Rest of home set-up is fairly simple. X-station connected via USB, Radias and JV1010 via MT4 - all going into a Mackie and then into MBOX.
Anyone got any ideas? Hopefully just me being incredibly thick!
    Thanks guys.

Same thing happens to me. I found the sound control panel was turned all the way down and the mute box checked. I had to replace it. It's happened quite a few times on a restart ever since I got Apogee's Ensemble.

  • Konnekt 48 stability with logic 8

I'm interested in purchasing a konnekt 48, but I'm having a hard time getting a common consensus on it's stability.
    1. Have the driver issues been addressed?
    2. Is latency an issue?
    3. How does it sound compared to the Metric Halo, FireFace800, and Apogee's Ensemble?
    Thanks-dave wyatt
    MacBook Pro 2.4, MacOSX 10.4.10, Logic 8

    Hey Dave,
I got a SK 48 about a week and a half ago and here are some of the things I've found. I'm running Logic 8 on a G5 and 6 Gb of RAM. I'm running the latest TCNear 2.00 software and whatever the current firmware number is. I had a Mackie Onyx 400F which I liked pretty well but wanted to go up a notch. I would say the SK 48 is more than just a notch above. I think it's a excellent piece of equipment. I got mine from Music Studio Direct (www.musicstudiodirect.com) because it's like buying from your neighborhood music store. You can actually talk to real musicians who know what they're talking about.
1). Although the driver has been pretty stable for me, I wouldn't say it's perfect yet. I believe that most of the major complaints that I've seen on the TC Forum have been with the PC driver and also with the SK 8 and 24. If you're running just Logic (like you should anyway) and not iTunes and Photoshop or something else, you should be alright. Although I do regularly listen to iTunes through the SK 48 when I'm using other apps and for the most part it does pretty well.
2). I have had no latency issues by just plugging a guitar, keyboard, or mic in and playing through any Logic plugins. The exception I've had is with the Fabrik R plugin. This is part of learning how to route signals with the SK 48. The first thing I did was turn off software monitoring and that significantly reduced the latency issue but didn't get rid of it completely. The Fabrik plugins work two ways. Either internally native in the TCNear software or as a plugin through Logic. If you run it as in plugin mode you'll probably have to deal with some amount of latency. Internally is supposed to work better but I haven't gotten back to that yet.
3). I don't know about the Halo or the Ensemble. Although the Ensemble equipment is supposed to be very good (I have no practical knowledge) I would never buy a piece of equipment so completely tied to a particular platform for one thing. I will tell you that I feel it's better sounding than the Onyx, Saffire, Motu, and M-Audio equipment. This is based solely on my personal and practical experience. I know everyone has their preferences. I believe it's at similar quality level as the Fireface. It's hard to beat that German engineering, but in the end the device and software combination of TC Electronic is better. This is all my opinion.
    Hope that helps,
    Chris

  • Apogee Ensemble -vs- Apogee Rosetta (200 or 800)

I am in the market to purchase one of these interfaces.
I would like to hear from anyone that owns either of these interfaces
and have used it not only to record but to also mix out of.
I understand that the Ensemble is a step down in quality than
the Rosetta but would like to hear if anyone has 'heard'
    a difference.
I have installed a Rosetta 800 and thought it sounded amazing.
I have also read many good reviews about the Ensemble and it seems like a
really flexible interface with the preamps and the Adat i/o.
I also own a MOTU HD 192 that I dont particularly like the 'sound' of.
I have seen the upgrades for it thru Black Lion but not sure
exactly what they are doing besides isolating the power supply.
Anyway feel free to say what you like...

I had an Ensemble on loan for a week while waiting for my Symphony System with a Rosetta to come in.
I went with the Symphony only because it was supposed to be the better of the two in latency. I know the analog section of the box in the Rosetta is better on paper than the Ensemble as well.
In the real world, in a less than perfect control room (which I have!)....I did not notice a huge quality jump. I can't frankly remember whether I noticed any. In fact, I have often wished I kept the Ensemble because it had nice clean mic pres built in and way more I/O options. It is a great box, and you couldn't go wrong with it.
We all get way to caught up with improvements that are barely noticeable (if at all, consistently) considering that our end product generally ends up on radio, TV, or an iPod.
Can anyone hear the difference in a record made with a Rosetta vs an Ensemble on the radio?
TV? iPod? Less than perfect listening environment? I am betting a real big "no," and for the difference in costs you could buy another mic, or software, or...dare I say...put it in savings.
    JMHO.

  • IMac firewire Apopgee Ensemble and Glyph hardrive question

Howdy! I have a brand new iMac 2.93 Question about firewire and a Apogee Ensemble and a Glyph GT050 hardrive. Neither of these came with the proper firewire cable for the iMac. Can someone tell me what kind of firewire cable I need to hook this up? Can I daisy chain the Glyph into the Ensemble? I'd rather not use USB for the Glyph. I've tried in vein to find the answer. Thank you in advance!!!

You just need an adapter like this one. You don't need a hub.
Then, as Jorge said, you can daisy chain your Ensemble and your HD using a standard FW 400 cable. After that, it's just the order to experiment with: some interfaces like being first in the chain, some last, and most don't care. You'll find out very quickly if this is an issue with your system (probably not).

  • How do you Control SPDIF input levels in Logic Pro using Apogee Ensemble

    Hello,
Question. I have an Apogee Ensemble audio interface hooked up to my Macbook Pro. I have a Motif XS8 that I record audio from through SPDIF.
I am able to get sound through to my audio track once setting the inputs in Logic, however the levels are not even close to halfway. I can not figure out how to fix adjust the SPDIF level to make it hotter b/c I know once I add virtual tracks and vocals through my preamp, the audio from my motif will likely not be hearable.
    Please let me know.
Also, when I record an audio track is says about 15 minutes remaining to record. Does that mean I have 15 mins of audio for each track or for all my recording period???

Not owning an Apogee Ensemble, maybe someone else who does has more definitive info can jump in, but do not confuse the lower level of the SPDIF input with "lesser quality". It's a digital connection, with no analog conversion.
-18 dBFS on a digital scale is the same as 0dB on an analog scale.
I think what you're experiencing, is the fact that so many people think they need to get the meters in Logic closer to 0dB, which is actually NOT what you want (when staying ITB). This thinking is left over from the days of analogue recording, or the early days of 16 bit digital recording.
Turn your other sources in Logic down, and you'll reap the benefits of not overloading the 2 buss, allowing the plug-ins to do their computations without distorting, etc... Then you can bring the over all level of your mix back up, in mastering.
If the Motif is considerably lower in volume than that, you could always insert a gainer plug-in on the audio track.
As to the 15 minutes, that is what Logic has pre-allocated for recording to your hard drive. It "re-sets" each time you go into record, so it's not saying "you only have 15 minutes of record time available". It's saying, "you have 15 minutes of hard disk space allocated each time you go into record, based on your sample rate and bit depth settings". This can be changed in the Audio pathway, but it's recommended to leave this number as low as possible/necessary, to avoid disk fragmentation.

  • Apogee Ensemble or Symphony to work with Logic?

    Hello,
I'm considering to buy Apogee multi I/O hardware to work with Logic Pro in my studio.
The choice is between an Ensemble interface and a Symphony System (Rosetta 800).
I know that in terms of quality the second one is better and that Ensemble is more affordable in terms of price.
What I'd like to know is how does Ensemble work in terms of LATENCY (I hate it) and if VBus is a big +point for Symphony when mixing and using heavy plug-ins and instruments like NI Battery or B4 (for example).
Could any one help me in this choice.
    Thanks!

    Thanks
Then I'm more interested in buying an Ensemble instead of a Symphony System for my project/mixing studio.
Yeah, my work is all in Logic.
I produce reggae music. I record some live instrument and vocals into logic, then I work with'em and some virtual insturments and plug-ins.
I thought that VBus could help to heva a more efficient RAM usage, allowing me to run big plugins "outside" Logic.
Talking about latency, it could also be due to my USB keyboard/controller, I know.
I asked about that also because using my apogee duet with logic I had some latency when recording a voice in a porject with virtual instruments and plugins. Maybe I do something wrong.
    Big Up
p.s. I visited your site. Nice productions
Do you know some links where I could master my tracks (reggae)?
