Apostrophe HTML code

I subscribe to the following podcast:
feed://www.collegedalechurch.com/downloads/CollegedaleChurchSermons.xml
All of the titles and descriptions that contain "curly" apostrophe characters show up as their decimal code [ampersand pound 146 semicolon] instead of the apostrophe character intended. Is there a way to correct this issue with iTunes or will the podcaster need to modify their way of publishing?
I tried to search for this topic but I could not find anything. Thanks in advance for your help.

Actually, iTunes doesn't handle HTML at all for podcast titles or descriptions. It's stated in the iTunes Store podcast technical specifications that they don't. I ran the feed through FeedValidator.org, and it appears that the way they used the code for the character is invalid, which is why it isn't showing up properly. You might want to contact the publisher about it.

  • Pasting smart quotes and apostrophes in code view.

    Sine upgrading to Dreamweaver CS5, I haven't been able to copy/paste smart quotes and apostrophes into code view without them automatically being converted to straight quotes.
    For example, the following sentence (notice the curly quotes):
    John’s new song is called “DW Blues”
    would get pasted into Code View as:
    John's new song is called "DW Blues"
    Notice the smart quotes and apostrophe are replaced with single and double ticks, or "straight quotes."  While this seems like a minor detail, it's extremely important to our writers and editors to have them appear on the website exactly as typed.
    If I do the same copy/paste in Design View (doc type is XHTML Transitional), it appears as:
    John's new song is called "DW Blues"
    The characters are still replaced, and the straight quotes are then entity encoded (as expected).
    This doesn't happen with other valid UTF-8 characters like ™, ®, —, etc., or with any other code editors I've used, including DW CS3.
    Is there a hidden preference somewhere to disable this "feature," or is it just a bug?
    Please help!

    It's now 4 years since jsparacio posted this, and I just wanted to let everyone know that I had -- and am still having -- the exact same problem with Dreamweaver CS5 (running first under Windows XP, then Windows 7, and now again with Windows 8.1). So it's not just Macs that are affected.
    FWIW, I have set my DW CS5 Paste preferences to the 3rd of 4 options available
        1 - Text Only
        2 - Text With Structure
        3 - Text With Structure Plus Basic Formatting
        4 - Text With Structure Plus Full Formatting
    in the EDIT > PREFERENCES > Copy/Paste Preferences dialog box.
    But the Paste Special command ignores this setting, giving me only the first 2 options from which to choose, with option 2 the default selection for Paste Special operations (options 3 and 4 are grayed out, and can't be selected).
    According to David Sawyer McFarland's _Dreamweaver CS5: The Missing Manual_ (O'Reilly Media, 2010), the reason these are grayed out is because I am pasting unformatted ASCII text which I generated in a program editor called "UltraEdit":
        "... Choose EDIT > PASTE SPECIAL to open the Paste Special window. Here, you can choose which of the four techniques you wish to use ... sort of. You're limited to what Dreamweaver can paste. For non-Microsoft Office products, you can use only the first two options--the others are grayed out--whereas you can choose from any of the four with text copied from Word or Excel." (McFarland, p. 81)
    Regardless of such restrictions, standard copy-and-paste (CTRL+C followed by CTRL+V) works just fine for me using Dreamweaver CS4 (i.e., I have never needed to use the Paste Special command), but with DW CS5, neither Paste command (CONTROL+V or CTRL+SHIFT+V) works properly with typographic/curly/smart quotes.
    All typographic quotes -- ASCII-0146 and ASCII-0147 (double quote marks); plus ASCII-0145 and ASCII-0146 (single quote marks, for quotes within a quote) -- are converted to inch (" is entered in the code) and foot (' is entered in the code) marks when I copy-and-paste text with these characters into Dreamweaver's Design View.
    When I copy this same plain ASCII text directly into the code (rather than using Design View), typographic double open & close quotes are converted to the inch (") mark, and typographic single open & close quotes are converted to the foot (') mark.
    The beginning of this week, I installed Dreamweaver CS5, ver. 11.0, Build 4909 under Windows 8.1 OS on my new Ultrabook. I was hoping that under Windows 8.1, DW CS5's handling of typographic quotes might improve so that I can actually use this program that I purchased 4 years ago. Alas, no such luck: I continue to have the same problem I had when I first upgraded to Dreamweaver CS5 back in August 2010 (then running under Windows XP on my desktop computer).
    Back in August 2020, when I first asked about fixes, I was told to change the Title/Encoding setting of Page Properties to "Western European" -- which I tried, but it didn't work then, and it doesn't work now ... and even if it did, it wouldn't be a proper fix for the problem as I have plenty of good reasons for wanting my HTML page Title/Encoding set to Unicode (UTF-8), not Western European ("charset=iso-8859-1").
    The ability to copy-and-paste typographic quotes is such a big deal for me that I chose back in August 2010 to revert to Dreamweaver CS4, which I've been using ever since.
    It is *very* frustrating that, 4 years later, I still can't use this program, and shall be reverting to DW CS4, yet again.
    I continue to be completely flummoxed by this. Every other program with which I am familiar converts non-typographic quotes to typographic/curly/smart quotes ... never have I seen the process automated in reverse!

  • Why does Contribute generate extraneous HTML code?

    Why does Contribute CS4 generate so much extraneous HTML code that is either redundant or conflicts with styles specified in our style sheet?  Below are examples of what we've encountered in the first two weeks of using the product.  It seems that, if we keep using Contribute, our website will soon be cluttered with junk code.  (Some of the special characters listed below and generated by Contribute do not display correctly in this forum.)
    1.       This simple Heading 1 tag: <h1>Heading 1</h1>
    gets replaced with this code:
    <p style="margin-top:0;"><span style="font-family:times new roman;font-size:16px;"><strong><span style="font-family:verdana; font-size:15px;">Heading 1 </span></strong></span></p>
    2.       This simple Heading 2 tag: <h2>Heading 2</h2>
    gets replaced with this code:
    <p><span style="font-family:times new roman;font-size:16px;"><strong><span style="font-family:verdana; font-size:13px;">Heading 2</span></strong></span></p>
    3.       This simple Paragraph tag: <p>Text</p>
    gets replaced with this code:
    <span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:times new roman;font-size:16px;">Text<span style="font-family:verdana;font-size:13px;">Text</span></span></p>
    4.       The standard straight quote symbol (&quot;) gets replaced with left and right quotes (&ldquo;) (&rdquo;)
    5.       Apostrophe’s get replaced with “&rsquo;”.
    6.       Odd, non-visible (in some browsers) characters are inserted, like: “”.
    7.       Dashes get replaced with these special characters, which may not display in all browsers: “—”.
    8.       This non-standard style tag gets inserted at the top of some pages:
    <!--
    .style1 {font-size: 15px}
    -->
    </style>
    9.       Trademarks, which are reliably denoted with just ”&trade;”, get replaced with this code and these special characters, which may not display in all browsers: “<span style="font-size:12px;">â„¢</span>”.
    10.   The simple Heading 1 tag: : <h1>Heading 1</h1>
    gets overridden with this code:
    <h1><span style="font-family:times;font-size:16px;"><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:15px;color:black;">Heading 1</span></span></h1>
    11.   This simple Paragraph tag: <p>Text</p>
    has the inappropriate “ServNAV” navigation style applied to it:
    <p class=”ServNAV”>Text</p>
    12.   This simple Paragraph tag: <p>Text</p>
    gets replaced with this code:
    <p style="margin-top:0;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;font-size:15px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;font-size:12px;color:#333333;">Text</span></span></p>
    13.   Extra filler space gets inserted at the bottom of a page with this code:
    <p style="margin-bottom: 0;"> </p>
    14.   Internal links are created as absolute (<a href="http://www.company.com/subfolder/Client-One.html">) rather than relative links ()<a href="../subfolder/Client-One.html">.
    15.   Links to other sites are coded incorrectly,
    as in “<a href="www.company.com">www.company.com</a>”
    instead of: “<a href="http://www.company.com">www.company.com</a>”.
    16.   This simple bold Paragraph tag: <p><strong>About Company</strong></p>
    gets replaced with this
    <p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><strong>About Company</strong></p>
    17.   This simple Paragraph tag: <p>Text</p>
    gets replaced with this code:
    <p style="margin-top:0;"><span style="font-family:times new roman;font-size:16px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;font-size:13px;">Text</span></span></p>

    I've just written a detailed list of editing tips for our internal use that, in addtion to using "Paste Text Only", describe how to avoid or re-key Microsoft Office curly quotes and apostrophes, use only Contribute's Insert | Special Characters, etc.
    In addition, I created a new role in which I made the following changes:
    Under Editing, under“General editing restrictions”, checked the “Prevent users from inserting images (except shared assets); under “Paragraph spacing, changed so “Enter key moves insertion point down:” “Two lines, as in web page editors (uses standard <p> tags”; under “Other editing options”, unchecked “Allow multiple consecutive spaces”
    Under Styles and Fonts, under “Styles and Fonts”, unchecked “Include CSS styles in the Style menu; unchecked “Allow users to apply fonts and sizes”; and unchecked “Allow users to apply font color and background color”.
    Under New Pages, unchecked “Create a blank page”
    Our initial experimentation indicates this eliminates most of the extraneous and junk HTML code that Contribute otherwise introduces. Time will tell. However, it requires contributors to be pretty rigorous.

  • How to see html code in a php file using CS5.5 without using testing server?

    In CS5.5 when I open a page with php extention, DW does not show any html code in design view without me having to set up a testing server. In DW 8 it would open the same files and show me the html in design view. I have no need to test php code, I just need to alter the html. Is there a setting I can change to enable this in CS5.5? Thanks.

    Below is the code. I discovered that if I create a new php document not from
    a template, then I can see the html elements in design view. If I create a
    new page from a template and save it as html, design view still works, but
    if I save a new page from template and save it as php, I only see symbols
    for php and nothing else in design view.
    Thanks for your help on this.

    .container
    /* ~~ The header is not given a width. It will extend the full width of your

    own linked logo. ~~ */
    .header
    /* ~~ These are the columns for the layout. ~~
    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the divs. The elements
    within these divs have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box
    model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div
    itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total*
    width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div
    and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for
    your design.
    2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If
    you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward
    (for example: a right margin on a div set to float right). Many times,
    padding can be used instead. For divs where this rule must be broken, you
    should add a "display:inline" declaration to the div's rule to tame a bug
    where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.
    3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element
    can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned
    class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar divs could be stacked
    if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your
    preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.
    4) If you prefer your nav on the right instead of the left, simply float
    these columns the opposite direction (all right instead of all left) and
    they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the divs around in
    the HTML source.
    /* sidebar1 = left */

    .sidebar2

    premade flyout menu like Spry) ~~ */

    The code in bold below worked. After I switched my browser from IE 11 to Firefox to get the hover on hotspots to work, the program gave me this error message. I moved the EXE file to my local file folder and tried it as shown below. Still no success. Any suggestions?

    Perhaps this might be helpful:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/opendownload-10902/
    It allows executables in Firefox to be run - it is an extenstion, though, so it must be installed in Firefox before your page will work.
    Another option is this solution, but it will still require a manual change in Firefox:
    http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=803615
    Or this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6472435/running-exe-in-firefox-why- do-i-get-an-error
    However, you will still have problems with getting it to work cross-browser. Honestly, browsers are not supposed to have access like that to the client side file system, which absolutely makes sense for the web.
    That is why you may have to approach the solution from a different angle - perhaps create a server side cloud version of your application(s) which can be easily accessed and run by your family members. I believe you used C to develop the applications? Although I have no experience with this framework, Wt might be a solution to convert your projects to server side applications:

    Good luck!

  • Using webmail in Mozilla Firefox 17.0.1 on Windows 8, original messages get turned into html code when I reply to or forward them. How can I fix this?

    I have tried re-setting Firefox and working in Safe Mode, but the problem still recurs. I use Fastmail as my webmail server and never had this problem on Windows XP or Windows 7. When I reply to a message, the original message is turned into html code. The same happens when I forward a message.
    My JavaScript is up to date, in case that's relevant. The Fastmail support team suggested the problem would be Firefox-related.
    The other function of my Fastmail account that isn't working properly in Firefox 17.0.1. is the search function.
    Do I need to get new plugins or something? I don't know where the HTML editor is in Firefox or if that's what's wrong.
    Regards,
    Rachel

    Thanks for your reply, cor-el. Norton 360 came pre-installed on the laptop as part of the package I bought. I haven't changed the pre-set firewall or anti-virus settings. Should I change something?
    I will try rebooting in Windows Safe mode as you say and report if that makes any difference.

  • PDF and column HTML code

    My report table include column with HTML format such as
    <a target="_blank" href="tableA.url">tableA.url</a>
    It works fine in dashbaord: I see the URL and when click on it, I got the URL in new window.
    When I export to PDF, the resulting PDF display the HTML code and not just the URL.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    I tried to achieve this before without success. My conclussion was that the pdf converssion engine that OBIEE uses is not able to generate HTML code inside the pdf.
    Me too I will like to know if someone achieved this.
    Thanks,Unfortunately, your assessment is correct: when printing to pdf, the HTML codes are exposed rather than maintaining the functionality of the coding.

  • Web Intelligence: Save Report as PDF and with embedded HTML code

    Hi all.
    Sorry but I'm not able to find any post about this matter, please feel free to provide links if you know existing topics about this problem.
    We created a beautiful report with HTML5 code embedded into a blank cell and we are now trying to export it in a printable format (e.g.: PDF or HTML).
    As you know (as per manual information) it is not possible to export a report with embedded HTML code and keeping it in the output (cell with embedded HTML code is rendered blank).
    My question is: is there a known workaround or an alternative solution to export the report and keep its content?
    Print screen is not a valid option :-P
    Thanks for the support or any suggestions

    Product limitation; vote for change on ideaplace, etc. I don't believe there is an *easy* workaround, but see:

  • Quote transformed into ' (quote html code)

    Hi all,
    I try to translate an dbms_xmlapi.DOMDocument with xslt.
    My problem is all quote ' are translated to their html code entity : &apos.
    The french accent causes problem too.
    Could you help me ? I'd like to know if it's possible to disable this translation.
    Benoit Pironet

    Not currently. You would need to specify output at text, but this is not currently supported by the database XSLT engine

  • Print a PDF report having a field(column table) with a HTML code

    hello every one,
    I have a table where a column(varchar2) have HTML code inside it.
    Because all my reports are in PDF format, how can I print this column, when I print in PDF I see all HTML tag and it isn't formatted.
    Have Anyone same problem, could I convert in PDf before I print it?
    Thanks in advance for help

    You need to set "Contains HTML tags" to YES, so that the HTML code is formated in the report.
    It is a property of the field.

  • How can I make my XSLT processor accept html code ?

    In my applications the Oracle xslt processor wont accept simple HTML tags within an XML source while transforming the source into HTML. Both processors either will throw parser exceptions or ignore the HTML code in the XML source completely, though output-escaping is explicitly enabled.
    In detail, I want to transform an XML source like this...
    <element>
    Hello, this is a <b>XML</b> text source mingled with htmlTM
    </element>
    ... with an XSL Stylesheet like this...
    <xsl:stylesheet>
    <xsl:output method=html cdata-sections=element/>
    <xsl:template match=element>
    <html>
    <body>
    <xsl:value-of select=. output-escaping=yes/>
    </body>
    </html>
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    ... which should result in a HTML code like this ...
    <html>
    <body>
    Hello, this is a <b>XML</b> text source mingled with htmlTM
    </body>
    </html>
    The result, however, is always like this:
    <html>
    <body>
    Hello, this is a XML text source mingled with htmlTM
    </body>
    </html>
    This means that the additional HTML tags inside the XML source have been completely ignored by the XSLT processor though I enabled the output-escaping.
    If anybody should think now that mingling HTML with XML text is stupid because I could also format the result with the XSL Stylesheet itself, he might be right, of course, but: I cant avoid this because in my application the XML source results from a users web form entry. The user working with the form must be able to decide whether he wants to include HTML in his text or not. In any case, any HTML code he enters should just be transported WITHOUT ANY CHANGES to the resulting HTML page, not omitted without comments! It seems quite simple to me, but the XSLT processor doesnt want to agree with me in this point :-(
    So, once again in brief: Is there any possibility to tell my XSLT processor not to parse, transform or manipulate HTML tags, but to transport them unchanged to the output ?
    After weeks of research any helping sign would be a great relief...
    Many thanks in advance.

    I don't understand the answer, can you please expand. I am trying to do a similar thing by creating an output buffer,
    assemble a mix of text and html tags and then output this buffer later. All of the html tags are skipped or re-escaped in the final html:
    In this example I want to print the IPRCROP, then add an html break (<br>).
    Example 1. Use xsl:text with escape = yes
    <xsl:variable name="buffy">
    <xsl:for-each select="documents/document">
    <xsl:value-of select="IPRCROP"/>
    <xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&lt;br&gt;&lt;/br&gt;</xsl:text>
    </xsl:for-each>
    </xsl:variable>
    <xsl:value-of select="$buffy"/>
    In this case the <br> and </br> end up re-escaped in the output html as #60 etc. so they appear literally as
    ALFALFA <br> BARLEY <br>
    and in source as: ALFALFA&#60; br &gt; &#60; /br &gt;BARLEY
    Example 2, try as pure text, it just skips the <br></br> altogether
    <xsl:variable name="buffy">
    <xsl:for-each select="documents/document">
    <xsl:value-of select="IPRCROP"/>
    <xsl:text><br></br></xsl:text>
    </xsl:for-each>
    </xsl:variable>
    <xsl:value-of select="$buffy"/>
    output = ALFALFABARLEY
