App in a Snap

Hello,
I trie to install the app in a snap template, but this does't work. I tried it on several computers, but with no result.
Is there a way to get the template not as an exe-file to install?
I would like to use this in my lessons at school, so i need an urgent solution.
Thanks

Hi Fons,
Since this forum is to discuss the VS IDE, so I’m afraid that it is not the correct forum.
Do you mean that you download a snap template from a web site? If so, my suggestion is that you could post this issue to the site where you download it.
In addition, I also found a blog or some cases which are similar to this issue:

Based on the Announcement
here:
With the release of Windows 8 Consumer Preview, the Windows General OS Forum is no longer the supported destination for general questions related to Windows 8. For Developer related questions please continue to select
from the list of forums under the MSDN Windows Metro app style category. IT Pros can now select from a list of dedicated TechNet forums under the Windows
8 IT Pro category. General consumers can get support from our Microsoft Answers community. This forum will remain as a read-only resource but we encourage you to leverage our other community support
resources for new questions.
Maybe you could get useful information.
Anyway, since it is not the VS IDE issue, I am moving your question to the moderator forum ("Where is the forum for..?"). The owner of the forum will direct you to a right forum.
Best Regard,

  • Full backup does it include andriod apps downloaded through SNAP

I just want confirmation if I use BB Link to do a full backup, it will backup not only the app data but the app itself which was downloaded through SNAP and not Amazon or BB world.
    Thanks

I do not know the answer to your question as I do not use Android Apps nor do I backup but there are Apps which do backup Apps, some are free and some are paid 99₵
Hopefully someone who knows the answer will read your post and reply.

  • You Upgraded to OS 10.2.1 and want to run Android Apps on Your BB10? Install Snap to Your Device!

If you've upgraded to OS 10.2.1.x on your BB10 device you can now install any free Android app directly to your BB10 smartphone directly without any special converting and without the need to connect to your PC.  This opens up BB10 to the thousands of Android apps available in the Google Play store.  However, you need an app to quickly search for and install these Android apps.
The best app available so far is called Snap.  Unfortunately, Snap can't be installed directly to the device since it's a native BlackBerry app and is not yet available in the BlackBerry App Store.  However, it can be quickly loaded to your BB10 device using your PC.
Here is a quick and easy way of installing Snap on your BB10 device using your PC.  Once Snap is installed on your device you won't need your computer to install Android apps on your device!
    1.   Download Sachesi for your computer Platform, i.e. Windows, Mac, Linux (Don't download the Sachesi bar file for BlackBerry or the apk file for Android)
    Sachesi
    2.  Download Snap from here:
    Snap
    3.  Connect your BB with the USB cable.
    4.  Double click on the Sachesi app you downloaded.
    5.  When it opens, click the "Install" tab. (If your device requires a password enter it here.)
    6.  Drag the Snap bar filed you downloaded in step 2 into the box under the install tab.  As soon as you drop the file it will load to the device.
    7.  That's it!  You can disconnect your device and enjoy direct downloading of Android apps on your BB10 device by opening Snap and using your Google Account.
Note:  Not all Android apps will run on the BB10 and, occasionally, an app will not work quite as expected.  However, the vast majority do run normally.

Hello John_Clark  Excellent contribution. Valuable information for all who want to upgrade and not wait until the update is releasedby our operator. It would also make a good listing of operators which has released 10.2.1
And which have not yet released. Regards.

I just updated Bridge and Photoshop CS5 and now I am getting crashes. Yesterday, Bridge crashed while running ACR. I've seen it off and on when both Bridge and DXO are open, but not in PS. So I ran a new run w/o DXO and it crashed again. It appears random.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I would recommend an OS reload, with no Device Switch. Instead, back up your data from the old device, conduct the OS reload on the new device, then restore from the backup to the new device. Further, manually re-install all added apps from BBWorld, SNAP, etc.
If that fails, then skip the restore and instead reconfigure everything manually. Sometimes, corruption can move with a restore, even to a different device.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Z10 - No Data Network Connection for Several Android Apps

    Hi,
    I'm using freshly installed 10.2.1.2102 software on a BlackBerry Z10 (STL100-3).
Everything runs smoothly except for several Android Apps dwnloaded from Snap or Onemobile.  They work perfectly fine over WiFi but not at all over Data.  Does anyone know why or if there is a solution? It's pretty frustrating.
Examples include, NetFlix, MyFitnesspal, Amazon Price Check Urbanspoon, etc.
    Thanks for any replies.

you can hard restart you device. and try again

I am not sure about that specific app but you can try.
You will have to load the android app stores if you havent done do already.  I recommend Amazon app store and snap.

  • Ever since I updated to iOS 7 my iMessage doesn't work and when I try to activate it, it keeps saying one thing about network settings I have reset my iPhone 4S plenty times too see if it would fix it but nothing what todo?

Also when I try to open an app it tells me to sign into iTunes and activate push notifications and it pops up everytime I open any app, and no app tells me I have any notifications I true checking to see if I was signed out but I'm signed in I'm clueless in what to do, and apps suck as snap cat the message comes up every second so I can't even do anything with that app

iPads only support iMessage. You cannot send SMS with any of the native iOS functionality on it. There may be some apps in the app store that will, and certainly several messaging platforms (but read the descriptions carefully).

  • Keyboard (hardware & onscreen) suddenly don't work anymore - only factory reset helps

I have my Passport for about a month now and just experienced the following problem for the second time: all of sudden the keyboard (both hardware and onscreen) don't work anymore. I cannot enter my device password anymore, I can focus the password dialog, but then simply nothing happens when I press keys.
After a restart of the Passport it asks me for my SIM card PIN. Again, I can focus the text field in the dialog, and I can touch numbers of the onscreen keyboard, and the number keys light up, but no input gets to the dialog.
There is simply no way to activate the device anymore. I can do a backup using BlackBerry Link, and I can access the device with BlackBerry Blend - but the device itself is useless. No kind of restart or reset helps. The only solution is to do a factory reset, after that the device works fine again - for some time.
Once this happened while I was on the road, without doing anything with the device. The second time it happened when I was trying to deploy a self written app using the Momentics IDE.
    Additional information:
    - development mode is on (needed since I want to develop Apps for BB10)
    - Snap is installed
    - a handful of Android apps from Google Play store are installed
    - two BlackBerry World apps are installed (whatsapp and HUB++LED)
Did anyone experienced similar issues or has an idea what might cause this problem?
    Thanks!

Have you tried using a usb keyboard/mouse?
I don't use any usb, only use PS2. Maybe it is possible to use some sort of a PS2 to usb converter, but I would rather like the PS2 to work.

  • Xperia Z1 showing troubled signs after upgrading to Build 14.2.A.0.290

So with this latest update have begun my woes. The first one is when I open any app, it quickly snaps shut till I open it again. YouTube through YouTube app or through Chrome refuses to play. Just keeps kind of streaming. And the third is when the phone rings I do not get the slider to recieve the call. I have to go to the notification area to pick the call. Also, when I make a call, the call app shuts when I am on call making it difficult to enter phonebanking and other numbers. Please do help. Wonder what the way around this is.

  • Location Services won't let go . . . .

I have a Time Capsule as my base station (primary router) connected to a Comcast cable modem.  I also have an Airport Express set up in another part of my house to stream music to my stereo.
I spend 3 months in Florida in the winter and I take my Airport Express with me and use it as my base station (primary router) connected to a Comcast cable modem while in Florida.  I've been doing this for 3 years now and when I got home from Florida this year and set up my Airport Express to "Extend a wireless network" as I always have, I noticed a weird thing happening.  Whenever I am in range of the AIrport Express with my iPad (which I bought while in Florida this year), the iPad's location services thinks I'm still in Florida.  e.g. Google Maps, Flixter (finds movie theaters in you area), weather apps, etc. all snap to the Florida location.  If I move the iPad into the range of the Time Capsule, location services correctly locates me in Massachusetts.  Funny thing is, this only happens on the iPad.  My wife and I both have MacBooks and when using Google Maps (show my location) for directions, they correctly locate us in Mass. no matter which router we are connected to.
    It's like Location Services won't let go of the Florida location . . . . .
Is this an iPad issue or an Airport Express issue?

I, too, am intrigued by this entire situation.  So much so that I keep doubting myself, so I've been checking and re-checking the iPad and our MBs by moving them from the room with the Time Capsule to the room with the Airport Express and then going to Google Maps on the MBs and a bunch of apps on the iPad and seeing where they think we are located.  And so far, nothing has changed.
At first I thought (as you did) that MBs determine location using a different method than iPads.  But, that doesn't explain why some apps on the iPad work and others don't?!?!?!?
Another thought I had was, when Apple updates their router location database, will my Airport Express's location update since I now have it set up to "Extend a wireless network"?  My Time Capsule is set up as my base station (primary router) connected to a Comcast cable modem.

  • Scrolling in msn and irc

    Hi folks
Since my first thinkpad (too many years ago it was a 760LD I have had problems with scrolling in certain programs as for instance Live Messenger and irc programs as KVirc. As I still do with the newest - a T400s...
I believe it is in the windows driver for trackpoint and touchpad as the problem isn't there when running Linux. Nor is it there if you use Remote Desktop in windows. This way you can use a thinkpad to control another thinkpad and then you can scroll in those programs...
But I have seen it work on other laptops - so why not with a Thinkpad too?
Otherwise I am very pleased with the Thinkpads and I think the T400s feels like something that may have had IBM stamped on it too... so it is going to replace my trusted T41 that has traveled most of the world and never missed a beat so: Thank you Lenovo - keep up the good work - and please solve above at a for you  comvenient time
    Best regards from Denmark
    Tina

I have this issue regularly inside: Mail.app, Preview.app and Finder.app - It occurs independently of each app. (E.g. one may still allow scrolling while another is "frozen".)
Additionally Preview.app does not snap to pages correctly as per 10.8
The immediate work around is to manually click on the scroll handle and move it, this seems to restore the functionality. Additionally, sometimes a subtle visual glitch is present, with the scroll handle being moved slightly to the right. (As if it's stuck in this position.)

  • Nokia 1520 shortcomings and lack of proper support

I have been given a Nokia 1520 as a gift (after i had suggested i liked it). I have owned it for 3 weeks roughly and it's been a total saddening experience. Amongst the countless issues i am meeting are:
    - The infamous oversensitive display issue. Can't type any sms or email straigth without having multiple characters repeated over and over. This also means that while i try to scroll the screen i happen to open unwanted apps or unwanted links in the browser or in newsreaders. Also, trying to select a tile to resize/unpin it, it most often results in opening it countless times before i actually manage to unpin.
    - Lack of a keyboard allowing me to input Traditional Chinese with Pinyin (It was requested in 2011, ie 3 years ago).
    - Timed stroke writing for chinese characters means that if you are too slow (as most westerners writing chinese are) you can't even write characters (maximum timing is 0,8 secs).
    - Lack of any form of quick input like swiping or so. Multiple issues also at downloading languages for the keyboard. A nightmare.
    - The OS won't allow users to select single words or place the cursor in a specific position inside a word. This can be done in some places but not everywhere.
    - Bing Translator honestly sucks and there is a huge shortage of dictionaries and language related resources in the market (nothing comparable to Pleco or Hanping
    - Lack of a decent notification bar and a LED telling people they got mail or messages or calls when the phone is muted. This caused me to lose two important jobs.
    - Very poor/shaky reception for the phone and Internet. Where my Galaxy Note 2 works full broadband, the Nokia connection goes up and down or is none at all.
    - I took the device to Nokia Support Centre in Taipei and the person in charge was a kid who not only didn't know anything about the, now well known, issues of the device but he also got very arrogant, talking carelessly and with a very bad attitude and claiming "people shouldn't buy phones without being able to use them" and "if you tried it before why you complain now?". Tested the phone for 2 seconds and he decided it had no issues, so apparently no chances to have the phone sent for a repair/substitution.
Is this the path Nokia and Microsoft are taking with Windows Phone?
I am so disappointed that i am considering reselling the thing and going back from where i came from, IE Android.
It's a shame Nokia hasn't learned how to treat users yet. I am particularly disappointed at the defective device and at the attitude of the part time, lazy, sleepy teenagers they use in Taipei to cover the service making customers run (or worse since some of those guys really push your patience far above the limits, maybe they don't like foreigners or they are scared at speaking English, whatever it is, it's very uneasy and unpleasant). I have never seen such a bad service for a such a malfunctioning device in my life. I have owned maybe 20 or more devices to date (including old Windows Phones) and never had so many negative experiences piled up all together at the same time
I just wish i had been given a device with some other OS rather than a device with a Beta version of an OS supported by part time staff.

This would appear to be a genuine issue with the 1520. Do not have one so could not comment
    - Yes indeed i can grant you it's genuine. Haven't sent an email in the last 2 weeks. Just too frustrating.
I know there is several Chinese language settings but as I am not Chinese could not comment beyond this is not something Nokia could do anything about as it is a core OS issue and not a hardware/firmware one.
    - Well, it's easy to see if you have doubts. Enter: Settings-Keyboard and go search for any form of input that says "Traditional Chinese with Pinyin (PinYIn is the romanization of chinese characters. You type say "Wo" and the chinese character for "I" pops up amongst other choices. This has been existing from day 1 in any decent keyboard. It has been requested at MS suggestion board 3 years ago. Is still to be implemented. I find it hard to think how they can sell these phones here (especially considering the relations between China and Taiwan and the fact they use simplified/traditional respectively). It's not only a mad marketing move, it's also politically sensitive. No one normal does that here, believe me.
There's several swiping keyboard shortcuts such as typing special characters or numerals (tap hold the 123 key and swipe to the desired character)
    - Sure, then do one thing. Download any swiping keyboard on an Android device and then compare the speed at which you type and amend words. The WP keyboard is primitive. The fact you can't resize it combined with the screen oversensitiveness make it useless. Other Nokias are much much better, but you can't beat a real swipe keyboard, especially if you type as a profession. How can someone use such a keyboard on a device in 2014 is beyond me and and anyone else who has used an Android but even a Blackberry in old times. It's simply inefficient compared to anything else out there. Then we can argue on what we like or not but surely not on its lack of productivity compared to else (whatever else)
As long as the app does not use it's own code anywhere you want to enter text tap and hold to have the cursor appear and swipe to the location wanted.
    - Then do a test. Take an email sent by someone else. Then go to the portion of text he sent you in the REPLY mail you are writing and try to select one of the SENDER's words. You'll see it's impossible. Then move down and try to select a single word of your reply. You'll see it can be done. Different menus pop up based on where you are or which app you are.
Same is TEXT PREDICTION. It works in some places, doesn't in others, even when you'd need it
Never used it, as far as I heard especially since tha latest (recent) update this got a lot better)
You don't. Try to be a foreigner permanently based abroad and the usefulness of these tools (Dictionaries, translators, etc.) will appear immediately, especially when you have to handle or even study characters based on ideograms. Now, Android (Which i insist in saying i don't like due to their philosophy), offers not only a good mobile translating app (including a function where you take a picture then just scroll your finger on the words you want to be translated and translation pops up in a moment) but if you don't like it you can also find a wide choice of tools (Pleco and Hanping being among them and their developers having no intention to expand on WP for now and some not even in the future). In this perspective, what for you is useless or secondary, for people like me (and other expats who do business and work abroad) is a killer application. Google got it. Microsoft and Nokia, it seems, don't.
Never understood the obsession with a notification bar when your apps and services all give up constant updates and notifications on their tiles. I would not want a blinking light on my phone ever. If you are unable to check your phone even once an hour that is really not the phone or OS problem. Don't try and pin your own negligence on the phone that just makes you look silly.
Let's try to be constructive. This OS must not be built based on what you as Blog Admin like or don't like. It has to be built to cater for a wide range of users. Now, you don't like that led because apparently your tiles make you happy. I, don't spend all my day watching tiles. I work too so the phone goes in standby and since it's permanently muted (no ring, no vibration), LED is key to understand when i get emails or sms' or other notifications. I am not asking a multicolour LED as in Samsung devices (which allow you to assign a colour and vibration combination to different accounts so you understand based on colour and vibration what is important and what is not; but at least a basic primitve LED telling people "Hey you got mail or SMS". If it's not a LED, a screen notification waking up the phone from standby would to as well. As far as i know it's not present. It was present in many Android devices as both standard or third party app since the very first basic versions.
So you use a Note2 and 1520 at the same time? this may well have nothing to do with the phone and it won't be the first time it turns out a WiFi router is actually at fault.
So what do you do? Go to Starbucks and tell everyone to stop using the free Wi-Fi because your Nokia 1520 needs a dedicated connection and i threaten to suit Starbucks for not letting the King have the whole bandwidth for itself?
Galaxy works fine. Nokia doesn't, especially when broadband gets weaker (Taipei has Wi-Fi also on Metro wagons and any restaurant or other outlet you may think of). Core point is everyone is there reading their content on their mobiles. I am there trafficking with settings and **bleep**. Ended up using my Galaxy which works fine.
Those are not Nokia owned nor operated stores, go complain to them
Let me explain you a basic of marketing so you understand when it's not the case to defend a brand beyond reasonable limits even when you administer their blog.
If i, as a customer, enter a BLUE SHOP carrying a big, huge, NOKIA brand with all people wearing Nokia shirts i (and the other 23 million users who almost stopped to buy Nokia in Taiwan) assume whoever is running it, is running it on behalf of Nokia (Officially or unoficially doesn't matter as they get the license to sell from Nokia in any case). So, if your licensee works good, people are happy and buy more; if the staff shows signs of laziness, arrogance, treating adults without respect, showing ignorance on device's issues (They didn't even know about the global issue of oversensitiveness or about keyboards...the phone was an alien in their hands), people RUN. And i did RUN.
If you combine the bad support with the fact that the device is actually malfunctioning and lacks a lot of basic functions that in 2014 are given for granted, i beg to think that the only users left once they try the phone for one or two weeks will be some Fans of the brand and a few people who need it to watch movies and take pictures but you don't need a phablet for that. When you sell a bad device and have an as bad support that instead of solving the issue denies it you are turning the market in a self-help environment where users get angered (And you can see how many there are about Lumias and 1520 starting to get on top of the list). So, as much as you and I may stay argue in your blog, i think that if this issue is not solved this OS doesn't have much future.
Finally, a phablet is a sophisticated device where screen size, hardware and software package combine to offer a certain experience that ranges from entertainment to work IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT (Not in your garden, in your living room or when you show off the device to friends to let them see all those useless tiles which you can't even interact with as they open when you want to resize them etc. due to the bad screen). It means the device must be ready and functional in your country or in mine or wherever you live. In this case, Galaxy and their cheap plastic trash got it right with the Note family. Others like HTC and Nokia are lagging behind and 1520 in this respect is not helping people who want to jump from Android to Windows Phone to make that jump.
Test the device simulating the job a professional user doess (typing mails all the time, text messages, interacting with web content, copy/paste, translating and sharing data, sending data to other apps in a snap), then multiply that for 7 days a week and then experience the frustration accumulating day after day. In my case, this is further amplified by the fact that i come from a device that has spoilt me allowing me to do things in a snap.
This phone, as is, is no game!

  • Impossible to open two Metro IE side by side (single screen)

I want to do the following: Open Youtube.com and view a view, move it into snap view and them open another Metro IE to do some browsing while the Video is playing.
First: If I click the Window-Key to select an app, the Video playing stopps.
Second: I was not able to open a second IE next to the snap view, the new Browsing Window will always open in the existing app in the snap view, so I found it impossible to view two browser windows at the same time
Is there any way to do that?

2 Metro apps yes. But not the same app twice.
But I found a solution for my specific Problem:
    http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/en-us/app/toolbox-for-windows-8/70e5e6af-017c-47e4-923b-db71bd9110ba
This app provides the possibility to view Maximum 6 Webbrowsers once.
I'm glad you found an answer, but I can't help laughing at the fact that Windows 8 RT needs a third party app to do something the OS should be doing.
Does anyone think they'll change the name Windows at some point, seeing as there aren't any...you know...windows in it?

  • Windows 8 Pro Works well on the Toshiba Z935

After I upgraded the memory in the Toshiba Z935 last month, I decided to install Windows 8 Pro. Everything works great. The only short cut that doesn't work is the brightness using the keyboard short cut. I haven't checked lately to see if Toshiba has updated its drivers for the keyboard FN keys. Toshiba had quite a bit of Windows 8 drivers already last month when I installed Windows 8. Here is a quick video to show how smooth Windows 8 Pro runs on the Z935 with 10GB of RAM.
    http://youtu.be/hEn7gExNomY

By the way, those of you that have upgraded to Windows 8 on the Z935 should go to the Toshiba web site and download the beta Synaptics Touchpad drivers for Windows 8. They support some of the Windows 8 gestures right from the touchpad. I like the swipe from edge feature on the touchpad.
I did notice that the two finger scroll doesn't work. You can still scroll using the right side or bottom of the touchpad.
You may also find this information useful since we don't have a touch screen.

How to Use Gestures Without a Touchscreen or a (Working) Trackpad
One of the best things about Windows 8 is that it adds an incredible amount of functionality to your arsenal with swipes and taps. You know, gestures. But if you don't have a touchscreen or a compatible trackpad, here's how you can still take advantage of all the new shortcuts. Microsoft calls them "hot corners," but they're basically just mouse-friendly maneuvers:
Start: Mouse to the bottom left corner, left click the tile.
Power User Navigation: If you right click the bottom left popup instead of left clicking it, you'll get options for a host of commands, like opening Task Manager or Control Panel, or individual settings like Power Options or Device Manager.
Multitask Quick Swap: Mouse to the top left corner and left click it (You can also right click to close or snap left or right)
Multitask Bar: Mouse to the top left corner, then slide your cursor down the left side of the screen. (Right click closes or snaps left or right here as well)
Charms: Mouse to the top or bottom right corner.
Close Live App: Click the top-center of the app and drag it to the bottom of the screen.
Live App Menu: Right click anywhere in the Live app
Aero Peek: Aero Peek is still here! Mouse to the bottom right corner and leave the cursor there.

  • Multiple problems after resoring Z30 from Blackberry Link.

    Hi,
I have been working on a battery problem with Blackberry support and they had me backup my Z30 via Blackberry Link to try an older version of OS. When I restored my phone (full restore) I am missing my Android apps installed via Snap and my email no longer works.
The email says my accounts are invalid and "some accounts have failed to respond". I reentered the passwords but that has not helped. Are there any known issues with email restoral on the latest Blackberry Link under OSX?
I figured that my Android Waze and Outlook would have issues on restoral and I seem to remember coming across an article about restoring them but can't find it now. Any help or are there a collection of articles on restoral problems I could look at?
    Thanks,
         John C.
    My Device: BlackBerry Z30 w/OS 10.2.1.3247
    My Carrier: T-Mobile

Thanks for the help as support does not seem to be very technical.
All too often the case. Sad.

I understand that .2160 is a bit old but that is the one showing up for T-Mobile
As has always been with BB, the carriers control the OS release cycle to their end users (as shown via the automated means -- on-device update and Link)...some approve newer versions more quickly than others. The methods I provided above allow you to ignore what your carrier has approved and install any version you want.

I can load up my Windows 7 virtual machine and try to use Sachesi but how do most folks here determine  what the best version is for them?
By reading what others experience. I can say that for Z30 .3177 and now .3247 are the best...things are much more stable than in any prior versions (and I "push" things quite hard).
I have no idea if Sachesi or AutoLoader will function via a VM on a MAC.

Another question is which is the best backup for OS10? At this point I'm not thinking very highly of Blackberry Link
LINK remains the sole method I know of to back up the actual databases and configuration items...I know of no other tools that can access that area of the device. The best method is to use LINK to backup all that it can, and then also do a manual USB copy of the entire contents of your Device and Media card areas. And also to have full documentation of all of your preferred configuration items, email accounts, etc...just in case you wind up in a situation where the restore re-introduces the very corruption you are trying to remove (this is a known situation...hence the way I recommended above that you proceed). Of course, you should also be using the most recent version of LINK.

and I'd like a stable way to do it so that I could try some of the newer, more experimental versions of the OS.
Sorry, not for discussion here on this site...other sites on the Internet are devoted to such things. But, as per the Ts and Cs of this site, only production releases of the OS and devices are open for discussion here. But, as for backup/restore, the methods previously outlined remain as described...what you do regarding the OS itself is your choice to make.

One last think does Sachesi take care of the Android SDKs?
Sachesi is completely non-destructive...all it does is replace the BAR files that represent the core OS and associated core apps. It does not touch anything else, and hence does not destroy your data, configuration, added apps, etc. In contrast, AutoLoader is fully destructive, and it is necessary to reload everything afterwards.
