App in the dock

I just got my new Imac. I somehow removed the application folder from the dock. When I try and put it back instead of having the folder appear, one of the items (address book) icon appears. I have done this several times and it still happens. If I take the address book out of the apps folder, then another item in the folder appears in the dock.

What you're seeing is the folder displayed as a stack. Stacks, by default, show the icon for their "top" (ie, alphabetically first) application (although you can display with a different sort criterion, such as by date added). You can still click on the icon and see the whole contents, but a regular folder display may make more sense for you. Right-click on the icon, and play with the different options - folder vs stack, view content as grid vs list - and see which one you like best.

okay... got that...but before I deleted it, it would "fan" all my open web pages, or open PDF files. So they were in a little folder as opposed to lined up beside my trash bin?

Blue dot by the apps on the dock

So on my Messages and Safari app on the dock of my Macbook Pro there is a little blue dot under it. I'm aware that these dots are there to indicate that the apps are active but they're still there even when i exit out of the apps. I don't know what to do so I was wondering if anyone else had a reason or a solution to my problem.

Choose Quit from the application's menu or by clicking and holding on the Dock icon. An application can be running when it has no windows open.

Workspaces are stored as XML files in your user profile on Windows or the user library on Mac, in a subfolder called, strangely enough, workspaces.
You may have run afoul of the new "content grabber" in the center of a frame that allows you to move the content without changing tools. Looks sort of like a dounut, or the center spot on some SLR camera focus viewfinders. You'll either love it or hate it, and it can be switched on or off in the View menu.

I am annoyed by, I think, the same problem. I would like to drag Pages files directly to the finder in the dock, but now with Mavericks I can not do this. It is bothersome to have to click on the finder to open it up when I did not have to do that with the old operating system. I hope someone can help us both out.
I also hope that in the next update Apple addresses the concerns many are having with the newest version of Pages. Until something is changed, I am sticking with old Pages because I find it to be a much better program to use.

And if your kids have their own user accounts on your computer, you can use Parental Controls. There's an option to disallow users from modifying the Dock.

Cannot connect to App Store using the App in the dock.

Trying to buy the OS X Lion software. Using the required App Store app just gives message cannot connect to store. Internet connection working fine, can connect to ITunes, Apple, etc, but cannot buy Lion because always redirected to use app in dock which doesn't work. Did all suggested fixes and still can't connect to store. How can I connect using app in dock?

Click on the Dock icon, remove it from the Dock, open /Applications, and use the App Store.app. If that doesn't work, create a new admin user account, and try there or reinstall the 10.6.8 v 1.1 update, repair permissions, and try again.

When an application is running, it will automatically show up in the Dock. If you click and hold on the applciation in the Dock it will present you with a popup menu with some options. Among them is Keep in Dock.
To add a document to the Dock, note the divider between the section that contains windows and the trash, and the applications.   You can drag between the divider and the trash any documents you want instant access to.
If you drag folders to that section, clicking on the folder once there will reveal a hierarchical menu of that folder's contents.
Note all shortcuts on the Dock are just that, shortcuts, and nothing more.   Don't make the novice mistake of removing the file from the hard drive or window after putting it in the Dock. If you do, you will never be able to access that file once in the trash, or emptied.    The dock is there for instant access. It is NOT a data storage folder.

What happened to the dust cloud when deleting an app on the dock?

I'm not sure if the little dust cloud animation was deleted when removing an item from the dock. It still makes the sound though?!?
I think I'm alone in thinking that 'design' (and personality) is leaving the OS as it's a far cry from the Aqua buttons but it seems the pendulum may have swung too far as with the blank white flat design, things just seem to run together.
Sigh.

I don't mind seeing stuff like the leatherette appearance going but getting rid of the 'puff of smoke' is getting rid of the OSX personality!
Thank goodness they didn't get rid of the 'genie' effect when minimizing/maximizing windows or there'd be a revolt!

How do I remove Apple Mail app from the dock on my Macbook Air, Maverick version?!?

I am using OS X version 10.9.2 (Maverick). The Apple Mail app is frozen and stuck on my dock. How do I remove it?!? The icon is active (light below) but I have quit the application. Also, I cannot open the application anymore either (I click to open, but nothing happens). Help!

I just tried trashing everything in the Mail package contents and restarting my Air. However, it says that Mail has cancelled restart and that I should try quitting Mail (which I have done, multiple times)..... Please help!

Can't remove app from the dock- Smart Board - Smart Notebook

I installed smartboard software for mac now every time I start my computer up the icon is in my Dock with the light below it I can quit the app and it disappears, BUT when I start my computer up its back again I looked under users and groups and the app is not not in the login items yet everytime I start my mac this app is in my dock and the light below is on. This has just started in past week, I removed about 6 apps from dock to see if it cleared it but message still appears. Mac is iMac 5 with Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

The message has nothing to do with available disk space. There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
In the Activity Monitor application, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.
