App Organization...
Hello,
I am very new to this discussion forum, so please bare with me. I already use iTunes 9, and I have the newest iPhone OS. So, I am well aware of how easy it is to drag and drop icons to the desired pages in order to easily organize your apps.
I am a total app junkie. I don't waste my time with a lot of the free ones, I have mostly paid apps, and I have well over 320 installed on my phone. In other words, I have a nice little investment in my apps, most of which are games, a lot of productivity, and quite a bit of communication and network tools.
I keep all of my music on my 100GB Zumo Cloud Drive - it has worked great for me. With that said, I already have 9GB of apps on my phone LOL... As I said, I am addicted to my apps!
My main complaint is with organizing and REMEMBERING what apps I have on the phone, especially when I am away and not docked with iTunes. I usually launch apps from the Finder, and not using the icon, so that's no big deal. But remembering which apps I have on my phone, especially since I have long exceeded 11 pages and all of my apps are not represented by icons, proves frustrating at best.
What I have done so far, is keep an alphabetical list of all the apps installed on my phone, as a note in Evernote, and I have the Evernote icon on my first page on the phone. Then, when I wish to retrieve a certain app but can't remember the name, I launch Evernote, find the app, then exit to the Finder, and I type the name of the app in.
Does anyone out there have any better ideas on app organization? I would be so grateful and happy to find an easier way. Many friends of mine have "jailbroken" their phones, and they have many third party apps that organize the contents into folders, much like a PC or a Mac. However, I have no such desire - I would really rather not jailbreak my phone. I like the way it works right now, and I really like iTunes. But once you get into so many apps the way I have, it becomes a quasi-nightmare to keep things organized.
So again, ANY ideas out there would be very VERY much appreciated. Thanks, I hope you all have a terrific day!
I really don't think there's much anyone can add to what you've said. Apple does not provide a good way to organize your apps other than putting them on different pages and since you have so many, your only way of launching them is using Finder. The remembering part is up to you. i.e. it's your choice to have so many that you can't remember them. I only have about 75 and can't remember all of them... I can't imagine trying to remember 320. If you want something better, I think you have only two choices... delete some apps or jailbreak.

IPhone Not maintaining App Organization After Syncing
Please help. Here's the scenario: I plug in my iPhone to my Mac to sync. While in iTunes, I select my iPhone in the side bar and then I select Apps. Once in Apps, I organize my apps into tidy folders. For example, I put all of my airline apps into the same "Travel" folder. I do this to prevent having pages and pages of apps. After doing that, I press the "Sync" button to save the changes to the iPhone. The changes seem to stick. No problem. I look on my iPhone and the changes are made. I unplug my iPhone and the changes are still there. However, when I plug in my iPhone to sync the following day, all of the apps are unorganized again. This has happened repeatedly for weeks. Not sure why. Some previous organizational changes I've made are OK. It seems the iPhone simply will not allow me to organize the last 7-10 apps I've added to my phone. Does anyone have any idea of why this may be happening and even more importantly, does anyone know how I can fix it? I have tried resetting my phone many times and it does not impact the issue. Thanks, in advance for any help and advice you can provide.
Does it behave any differently if you organise your apps on the iPhone itself, rather than in the iTunes side bar?

SUGGESTION: Create app organization tool for iPhone/iPod or do it in iTunes
As we obtain more and more apps, isn't there an easier way to organize them on my iPhone other than manually scrolling icons through 7 or 8 pages of apps? It takes forever. I'd rather edit my apps and how they appear through iTunes or a tool on the phone... is this out there? Am I missing something? Thanks, AJ
{quote:title=middlebunny wrote:}I actually had two iPhone technical assistance representatives express distain and react rudely when I questioned the inappropriateness of the "wiggle/move" way of organizing applications on an iPhone. Each advised that they've been working with iPhone for 1.5 years and I was the first customer complaint that they had received.{quote}
Yeah, that sounds like an Apple rep... Actually, from my experience it sounds more like a salespeon in a store, I've generally found that the tech guys are OK, the salespeons can be insufferable, but of course, YMMV.
And honestly, I don't believe them for a minute when they say that this is the first time that anyone has complained about it.
Funny thing is, this isn't really a complaint. It's a product improvement suggestion.
deggie, regarding your comment about not jumping on the bandwagon and not seeing the need for 400 applications on the phone, well, I'm not going to disagree there, but having the ability to improve the interface of the phone is a bandwagon we all should jump on, I think. After all, if we had the ability to catagorise applications, and you didn't want to use that ability, I'm sure that that would work as well. Most catorisation systems have a default - 'none' or 'unfiled' or similar. You could leave all your apps in the 'none' category, and others could organise things in a way that works better for them.
Everybody wins.
Regarding your comment that "(had you done a search you would have seen this is not a new topic, or information, at all)" well, that rather reinforces his (her?) point doesn't it. Others have raised this issue before, and there is no harm in raising it again.
middlebunny, as deggie says, send the suggestion to Apple via the feedback form - http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html -
Iphone app organization???
"And it’s easier to organize all the apps on your iPhone or iPod touch, because now you can do it right in iTunes"
Thats what it says, but when i plug my iphone in then sync it then I go to applications on itunes, I cant change my home or any other screen on my iphone from itunes... it doesnt appear next to the app list as it says it should??????
iphone OS 3.0 iTunes 9I'm not sure why this discussion is marked solved. I just had to install the latest iTunes on my PC, connected my iPod Touch, transferred purchases, but the apps tab remained grayed out. In the grayed out form, the order of the apps on the home page was identical to what it is on the iPod Touch. When I clicked sync, iTunes immediately started to reorder the apps, mostly blank, and produced an unchecked list at the left side. As I checked each app, the app appeared almost randomly onto the home pages at the right.
Is there no way to recover the app order from the iPod? None of the 3rd party apps that recover music playlists have app ordering features (that I can tell).
Is this a fundamental bug in iTunes? I can't imagine why iTunes would want to impose a random ordering of apps when it could simply preserve it. (The fact that it shows the apps arranged correctly means that it could read it off the iPod).
I realize that there are mobilesync backup files that you could have backed up and restored (if you had been doing full backups of the system). However, in my case I was placing data on a different drive and things did not restore cleanly. -
Frustrated with OS4 Update on 3GS! Lost signal,vm issues, app organization
I was really excited to update from the previous software to OS4. However, since doing so, I am anything but thrilled and regret updating my phone's software.
Since updating, I have noticed a significant loss in cellular reception. I am missing more calls (calls are going right to voicemail, when voicemail works), and then dropped calls have gotten ridiculous!
The issue with my voicemail according to those who call me is that when calling me it goes right to voicemail and then when they leave a message it says the box is full (when there are no messages in my voicemail box) or they get caught off half way through leaving their message.
Also haven't figured out how to sort apps that are on different pages. It was easy to figure out organizing apps into folders, but when I can't move apps from one page to a folder on another, it defeats its purpose.
In addition, I noticed when I update apps that aren't in folders, after the update the app icons move to the last page of apps I have.
Hope these problems get ironed out!As far as moving your apps to another page, hold your finger on an app until they wiggle. With your finger slide the app all the way to the left or right of the page and it will take a second but it will jump to the next page. Also not as convenient, but in the long run it seems to be faster if you use itunes. Plug your iphone into the computer and when itunes comes up click on iphone in the sidebar. Then click on the apps tab. If you want to move an icon from, say page 4, click on page 4 then drag the icon to the page on the right where you want it. Hope that works for you.

App organization in iTunes does not transfer to iPhone
I have an iPhone 3G and just purchased a new Mac Pro. I successfully transferred all my songs and apps from my old Mac to the new one. However, when I synched my iPhone for the first time, it placed all of my apps in alphabetical order (except for the native iPhone apps on the first screen).
I used iTunes to arrange the apps back the way I wanted to, but when I clicked "apply," it synched the phone and put them all back the way they were on the phone (alpha order). I used to be able to arrange apps on my computer, then transfer that setup to the phone.
This doesn't seem to work anymore, and I can't figure out why.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-MEI highlighted the albums that hadn't tx and then <command i> (get info) assigned a genre to each album, then clarified the sync instructions to include entire music library, then everything went over.

Organization of apps after ios5 update
I installed iOS 5 for my iPhone 4 and encountered some issues and was able to resolve all but one. More specifically, when I turn off my phone or it dies, my app organization is not retained.
I keep all of my apps organized in separate folders and leave page 1 blank; except for what is in the dock, i.e., the apps at the bottom of the screen. Meaning that my folders only appear on page 2 and onwards. On top of this, in a few cases, some apps don't stay in the folder I have saved them in.
The apps stay organzied when the phone is on, but if it is turned off or the battery dies all of my apps appear starting on page 1 and not on page 2 as I had them organized.
Why is this happening? What can be done to retain the organization after the phone is turned off or the battery dies?To answer you Oh yes I waited.... in fact almost 3 hours and it should not take that long..... I actually ended up restoring it and starting all over again. Seemed to work! We will see....
Thank you -
Is there an app for creating a folder structure on the iPhone out there?
I'm looking for an application to create folders (possibly password-protect them) on the iPhone, so I can add documents, PDFs, video clips etc to the phone and create subdivide them further in folders. There doesn't seem to be anything that does the right job in the app store. Is it not possible? Any feedback to help me understand would be appreciated.
It is not possible. You cannot create the folder structure you're speaking of and you cannot save files to your iPhone, even if you had folders.
There are no apps for folders or app organization. There are apps that allow you to access files from your desktop or the cloud from your iPhone. I use box.net. Dropbox and AirShare are others. -
File sharing in apps does not show
When connecting my Ipod Touch 2nd Gen in Itunes10/Windows, I cannot share files with my apps (fast reader, e.book). The window for file sharing simply is not there!
It should be device > apps tab > scroll down > file sharing area. What do you see below the app organization area when you scroll down?

I want to create a feedback app, for a website. What I want
is a textfield where my users can write there feedback messages
then click a submit button and it emails the message to me. Can
anyone help me do this?
ThanksIt is not possible. You cannot create the folder structure you're speaking of and you cannot save files to your iPhone, even if you had folders.
There are no apps for folders or app organization. There are apps that allow you to access files from your desktop or the cloud from your iPhone. I use box.net. Dropbox and AirShare are others. -
My apps and everything on my iPad are only partially backing up to iCloud. It's only backing up 1.7 GB but I have 13GB of stuff on my iPad. I have 200GB of iCloud storage so I don't know what the issue is.
Apps are not part of the backup. In app data is, but backing up the apps would be redundant as they can be re-downloaded from the store for free. Media (music, movies, podcasts, etc.) are also not part of the backup for the same reason.
iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview
What iCloud backs up
You have important information on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iCloud automatically backs up your device over Wi-Fi every day while it’s turned on, locked, and connected to a power source. With your device information backed up in iCloud, you can easily set up a new device or restore information on one you already have.
Here’s what iCloud backs up:
Purchase history for music, movies, TV shows, apps, and booksYour iCloud backup includes information about the content you have purchased, but not the purchased content itself. When you restore from an iCloud backup, your purchased content is automatically downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. Some types of content aren’t downloaded automatically in all countries, and previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the store. For more information, see the Apple Support article iTunes in the Cloud availability by country. Some types of content aren’t available in all countries. For more information, see the Apple Support article What can I buy from the iTunes Store in my country?.
Photos and videos on your iOS devices
Device settings
App data
Home screen and app organization
iMessage, text (SMS), and MMS messages
Ringtones
Visual Voicemail
Your iOS device backup only includes data and settings stored on your device.
It doesn’t include data already stored in iCloud, for example contacts, calendars, bookmarks, mail messages, notes, shared photo albums, iCloud Photo Library beta, My Photo Stream, and documents you save in iCloud using iOS apps and Mac apps. -
I just upgraded to the 4S yesterday. They activated it at the store but didn't transfer any of my apps/data (my contacts, etc are synced with MobileMe). I plugged my phone into iTunes and it synced the apps, but not the layout or more importantly, the data. I've already manually redone the app organization, but now realize I'm still missing all my music, photos from the old phone, and all the data in my apps. How do I restore all of this on the new phone? The first time I plugged in the phone to iTunes, I wasn't given the option to restore from a backup, though I did back up the old phone before getting the new one. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!
Cheers,
JenOk - I figured out how to restore my phone from the backup of my 3GS, so my app data and photos are back in place, but none of my music transfered from the backup. Thoughts?

Will data in my apps be lost?
I will be changing my iPhone 4S to iphone 5s soon. I wanted to ask if the data inside my applications will be lost. If so how can I save my data inside my apps?
do a backup.
app data is aved in backup see:
WHAT IS CONTAINED IN A BACKUP
One active backup is contained in an iTunes backup and each time an new backup is created the previous backup is overwritten. An iTunes backup contains the following information:
Contacts* and Contact Favorites (regularly sync contacts to a computer or cloud service such as iCloud to back them up).
App Store Application data including in-app purchases (except the Application itself, its tmp and Caches folder).
Application settings, preferences, and data, including documents.
Autofill for webpages.
CalDAV and subscribed calendar accounts.
Calendar accounts.
Calendar events.
Call history.
Camera Roll (Photos, screenshots, images saved, and videos taken. Videos greater than 2 GB are backed up with iOS 4.0 and later.)
Note: For devices without a camera, Camera Roll is called Saved Photos.
Game Center account.
Home screen arrangement.
In-app purchases.
Keychain (this includes email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some other applications. If you encrypt the backup with iOS 4 and later, you can transfer the keychain information to the new device. With an unencrypted backup, you can restore the keychain only to the same iOS device. If you are restoring to a new device with an unencrypted backup, you will need to enter these passwords again.)
List of External Sync Sources (MobileMe, Exchange ActiveSync).
Location service preferences for apps and websites you have allowed to use your location.
Mail accounts (mail messages are not backed up).
Installed Profiles. When restoring a backup to a different device, installed configuration profiles are not restored (such as accounts, restrictions, or anything which can be specified through an installed profile.) Any accounts or settings that are not associated with an installed profile will still be restored.
Map bookmarks, recent searches, and the current location displayed in Maps.
Microsoft Exchange account configurations.
Network settings (saved Wi-Fi hotspots, VPN settings, network preferences).
Nike + iPod saved workouts and settings.
Notes.
Offline web application cache/database.
Paired Bluetooth devices (which can only be used if restored to the same phone that did the backup).
Safari bookmarks, cookies, history, offline data, and currently open pages.
Saved suggestion corrections (these are saved automatically as you reject suggested corrections).
Messages (iMessage and carrier SMS or MMS pictures and videos).
Trusted hosts that have certificates that cannot be verified.
Voice memos.
Voicemail token. (This is not the voicemail password, but is used for validation when connecting. This is only restored to a phone with the same phone number on the SIM card).
Wallpapers.
Web clips.
YouTube bookmarks and history.
* Your contacts are part of the backup to preserve recent calls and favorites lists. Back up your contacts to a supported personal information manager (PIM), iCloud, or another cloud-based service to avoid any potential contact data loss.
There are three backups saved in iCloud and the following information is contained in an iCloud backup:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Photos and videos in your Camera Roll
Device settings
App data
Home screen and app organization
Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
Ringtones
Visual Voicemail

Keynote converts RGB to CMYK in PDF mode
Is there a way to keep an exported Keynote file in the RGB mode when creating a PDF file? If not, Apple needs to think about this option. Not all PDF files are meant to be print documents. This is really compromising a design we are working on.
