App server 10.1.2.0.2 The best Jave Runtime to use?

Hi All,
Im after some feedback on thoughts on the best JRE to use with Application server 10.1.2.0.2 and forms.
We have always used a stable 1.4 series version and used static versioning. Unforunately we came accross a problem that Oracle suggested we update to the latest series 5 1.5.0_18 which they say is certified with our app server.
Since we did this we have noticed that when we maximize/minimize the screen doesnt always fill properly, i.e. the background image is not filling the screen, leaving large white space. And other users have reported the system closes "every now and then"!
We tried upgrading our Java version before and came accross problems with right click features also, so im getting rather paranoid having moved from a relatively stable version!
So my question to the forum is what version JRE is everyone using? Which is the most stable?
Any other information is greatly appreciated.
And i know Java 6 is now certified with patchset 3 but unfortunately we have a lot of customer sites running this version and its impossible to update them all with the downtime required, and also the problems i have thus far encountered whrn installing patchset 3 means i wont have the resources to do this on all customer sites.
Thanks

You're in your good right to be worried about this. I need to know - you say you have been struggling with, what I understand are focusing issues. Forms have been plagued by these for a long time, but I have to ask you: have you applied the latest big cumulative patch on top of 10.1.2.3 (patch 7703734 or 8306828)? These patches resolve a lot of these issues.
Patch 7703734 or 8306828 are almost identical, so which one you choose is not important.
Next, regarding what JRE version to use. If you require full Vista and Windows 7 compatibility, I can recommend you to take a closer look at the latest JRE 6 Update 14, which has received full certification for Windows 7 and Vista SP2.
We have been using the latest JRE 6 since Update 12, where I had a critical Forms-related issue resolved - see http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6784816 for details. Since then, we haven't really encountered any issues across misc. platforms - Windows XP, Vista, and 7 RC. We are about to push JRE 6 Update 14 out to about 500+ users.
Another important thing - do you use WebUtil in your Forms apps? You will need to apply the latest Forms patch 7703734 / 8306828 AND use JRE 6 Update 12 or newer to be able to deploy WebUtil on Vista and Windows 7 without having to run Internet Explorer in Admin mode. However, if you DON'T use WebUtil, you can stay with 1.5.0 if you want. However, you should be aware, that this version will soon be unsupported, and I personally don't see any good reason not to move to JRE 6 Update 14.
The choice is ultimately your own of course, but now you have my take on your question.
Hope this helps,
Jacob

Update config testsuite on 4.0.0_fixes branch to force kill the app server before running any tests when the app server is Tomcat. The regression runs were hanging on this branch when going to run the config suite because the Tomcat server isn't shutting down cleanly at the end of the MXUnit run. I believe this is an issue with the version of ActiveMQ we are using. Since I don't think we want to update ActiveMQ on this branch force killing the Tomcat server will workaround the problem.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have tried this on another machine running the same version of Blackboard. It works fine.
Only difference is that the machine that has the JVM crash is running on Fujitsu PrimePower and the OS is Solaris 9 (but twigged for PrimePower).
The one where it runs and starts up successfully is running on SunFire (OS is Solaris 10).
I am wondering if there is a problem with the JVM loading required libraries because of the OS being different versions.
Any leads on this is welcomed. Thank you.

Hi, I planned to purchase a laptop for me to use for graphic design ..could let me know which laptop would be the best for me to use ? Thank you! Pro or Air

Someday - and no one knows when that day will come - maybe all applications will be able to take advantage of the Retina display. But for the present, not many do: including all Adobe applications. There was a demo of Photoshop at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference of Photoshop running at native Retina resolutions but no one at Adobe in marketing is saying when, if or how the upgrade may be coming. It could be a week, it could be a year, it could be 2-3 years. No one knows. And only Apple app's (for the main part) are really utilizing the native Retina display.
I've seen some demos of some applications (Apple's) that take advantage of the Retina display and they're awesome. But in actually working in the here-and-now I've heard quite a few gripes, particularly on the Photoshop forum, of menus looking pixelated and/or 'blurry' so I'm not quite ready to jump into the Retina display boat just now. Don't get me wrong - others have ad are very, very pleased with their selection. But until Retina displays are available on larger monitors, the maximum work area that you're going to be able to use is 15" - and that's simply not enough room for full-blown graphic design. Then there's the cost factor - for the $4,000+ you spend for a completely full-blown Retina kit, you can get a standard MacBook Pro, 16 GB of RAM, a fast SSD and even the Apple Thunderbolt Display for the same amount.
The standard MacBook Pro isn't better than the Retina display: it's just different. And I think (and this is only my opinion - other graphic designers should feel free to jump in here) that it's the best computer that you can get for your specific purposes. And, towards that goal, I have to recommend a very good external monitor (there's nothing more annoying than having to use InDesign in a single-page mode rather than side-by-side because your monitor isn't big enough).
Remember that this is only my opinion and that others might jump in with their own. But I was in the electronic pre-press business for more years than I care to admit and we always - always - worked with at least 19" monitors (and that's back when dinosaurs actually ruled the world).
I hope that others will jump in with their comments. I'm going to follow this thread and see!
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • What is the best mail account to use with Apple Mail?

Hi All, I am a recent convert to Mac from a PC and I am on a sharp learning curve. At present I am trying to use mail on Leapord. I have a Googlemail account which I have tried linking to Apple mail but I seem to get the same issue many others have with send e-mails. What is more, googlmail's All Mail facility is doing my nut in at the moment.
Therefore I was wondering what is the best mail account to use with Apple Mail? I only have a Mackbook and an i-pod nano so subscribing to mobile me at £58/yr just to get the @mac.com account (which I assume would be perfect) seems a little extreme for me.
Are their any other account that work correctly and don't have this All Mail option.
    Thanking you in advance.
    Matthew

    Hi,
    I have 2 issues.
    1) I have mail 3.6 and when I set up the mail account via IMAP and STMP I recieve mails ok, but I can not send them. If I do I get the following window pop up.
"can not send message using smtp.googlemail.com server" it tells me my address was rejected by the server.
    2) I have 2500 e-mails in my All Mails folder on googlemail. Nearly all of these I delete from my inbox years ago (my bad mailbox management). Google seems to store all my mails. I want to delete these permentaly as they also get downloaded into Apple Mail.
    Hope you can help.

  • What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

Looking for the best option here. What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

You should check your date of purchase against the manufacturer's warranty
or guaranty since some of those better brands have some recourse should
they fail within a specified time period. A good reason to save dated receipts.
Since solid-state USB drives probably don't (all) use a wear-leveling software
to equally utilize their recordable space evenly, it is possible that some of these
may exhibit a failure in some sector areas due to excessive over-writing. If the
ones you use do not have such a technology or an undercounted total capacity
with a means to automatically write in other sections, you may have to consider
manually using a disk utility to zero-overwrite and reformat them occasionally.
Even so, that may only help a marginal flash or thumb drive work a little longer.
Should a camera memory card fail you still may be able to attempt with margin of
success, to +recover image files+ from it. re: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The standard default format they ship with works well for most file types; so if
you aren't moving OS X or Mac app specific files around on a USB flash drive,
the original format should be fine. Oh, you can use Disk Utility to attempt to do
a repair; but in some cases you may have to reformat them, etc.
    {Some of the flash drive warranties or guarantees may vary from between regions;
so if you have one with a '5 Year' guarantee in the US, other rules may apply in EU,
    or when you seek to replace an item under warranty outside of where it was bought.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • The best Mac laptop to use Final Cut Pro 4???

I don't know much about Macs and I know even less about Mac laptops! Someone told me that the macbook (Intel based??) would be the best mac laptop to use with Final Cut Pro 4. Could someone tell me if this IS my best option or if I should be looking for a powerbook? What specs do I need to be looking for? I know that I need a G4 or higher, but the memory, speed, etc... I'm clueless about...

Get a MacBookPro 17" and upgrade to FCP5.1
You need the 17" to get the firewire 800 port - necessary if you want to edit anything more than DV or HDV.
The upgrade from FCP4 to FCP5.1 is very inexpensive now (offer expires in mid December) and you would be very foolish to not do it.
    good luck.

yes, this should have been posted in the FCP forum, but why clutter up two forums ...

  • Error: The Java Runtime in use does not contain a suitable JAXP feature

    Hi,
I'm trying to get Eclipse TPTP to work. One of the steps I need to execute is to run a setConfig.bat file. When I ran it, I got the following error:
ERROR: The Java Runtime in use does not contain a suitable JAXP feature
RESOLUTION: Use a JRE which supports the JAXP featureI use Eclipse Europa, and it is using my JDK (actually JRE) 1.6.0_05. That should mean I have JAXP in my JRE (which is confirmed when I search on JAXP from the directory C:\Program Files\Java containing jdk1.6.5_05 and jre1.6.5_05 directories).
Is there something extra I need to do to let Eclipse and TPTP find my JAXP classes?
    TIA,
    Abel

    Hi,
Even i am getting the same error but i use JRE 1.5.0_14. please let me know if you happen to resolve this.
    Thanks in Advance,

  • Which is the best MIDI interface to use with Logic 7 ?

    Hi folks :o)
Firstly, thanks all for any advice you can give. I'm a pro user, but right in the middle of a major upgrade (G4/OS9/CubaseVST32 >> G5/OSX/CubaseSX3/Logic7) & feel a huge learning curve coming on!
    The situation is this:
I have a Steinberg Midex 8 midi interface, plus a MOTU MTPav in the cupboard. The Midex took place of the MTPav because it had much better midi timing under OS9 with Cubase... The Midex8 drivers for OSX, however, are still beta & a pile of rubbish. (It keeps losing communication with the G5.) I'm fed up with how bad Steinberg have been sorting (not!) these problems out (not to mention the fact that Cubase SX3 can't recognise my 'studio' created in Audio Midi Setup either.. arghh!), so I'm considering jumping ship & going entirely to Logic in one hit, plus whichever is the best midi-interface for this software & OSX.
As food for thought, I'm currently thinking of tracking down a 'Unitor 8', having made the (perhaps wrong) assumption that it'd work 'best' with Logic seeing as it was made by Emagic. BUT, despite a lengthy search in Logic 7's manuals & this forum, I can't find any mention of Emagic's 'Active Midi Transmission' protocol & whether or not Logic 7 supports it; AMT is the only reason I'd buy the Unitor. (I've got all the other bases covered with the MTPav.) I'm also concerned about the long-term support issues regarding drivers for the Unitor 8 & OSX; ****, I'm having enough problems with Steinberg & their Midex 8 (which is still a current product in theory!) without throwing Emagic & a midi interface that's no longer manufactured into the pot...
So..... What do you folks feel is the best midi interface to use with Logic 7 as regards tight midi timing & system reliability? Can anyone out there with a big midi setup categorically say "I've got one (or more) of these MIDI interfaces, it works beautifully under OSX & Logic 7, & the MIDI timing is rock-solid, even when put under heavy midi 'duress' " ??
Many thanks again in advance for any feedback!
Your new Logic Pro virgin ;o)
    Jason

Thanks for your reply folks. It's good to hear a number of you are having good results with your MTPav - I guess I'll pull mine out of the cupboard in that case!
As an aside, it's been interesting to note how difficult it's been to get a clear answer from companies (be it shops or Apple) as to whether or not Logic 7 supports 'Active Midi Transmission' on the old Unitor 8 MkII..... (The reference manual has one mention of it in the index, yet points to a page that doesn't say anything about AMT at all!)
If anyone here DOES have a clear answer about AMT with Logic 7, I'd be very interested to hear about it... thanks.
    Kind regards,
    JC

  • What is the best backup drive to use to backup a windows xp pc and to transfer that data to a new iMac i5 May 2011 and then to backup my iMac on it?

What is the best backup drive to use to backup my windows xp pc and to transfer these files to my iMac i5 new in May 2011 and then to backup my i5 iMac?

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

I tried a few different ones, adium was alright, but i prefer just the regular msn for mac. It was weird when I first switched over, but now I like it better than msn for windows. It has a few less options, but nothing is missing that I frequently used. The best messenger for you probably depends on what features you want to have.
