App sizes?

I had 2GB of space left on my 3G S according to iTunes. I tried to sync TomTom Western Europe, which iTunes said was 1.67GB, but I got an error saying it wasn't installed because there wasn't enough space left on the phone.
I guess that maybe IPA files are compressed, so a 1.67GB IPA might need more than that when installed, so I cleared some apps & music off my phone until I had 3GB space, but ran into the same problem. I kept trying, bit by bit, until I had 3.95GB left, and finally it synced.
The thing is though I took a copy of the IPA file, renamed it to a ZIP and extracted it, and the extracted folder and contents was only 1.95GB according to Finder? So what gives? Any ideas?

Many apps, including TomTom need more than twice the size of the app in order to install.
From TomTom support site ( linked in itunes):
"Question
Not enough free space on iPhone
Answer
During the installation of the TomTom app your iPhone needs at least twice as much free space as the size of the app. The extra space is needed to unpack the app on your iPhone. Once the app is installed the extra space is no longer needed."

  • Reducing app size and using memory

Building with release preference Blank App template will give you a ~200kb .exe, which in running state use ~7mb of memory.
It has a huge list of external dependencies.
So, is it possible to reduce app size and using memory?
Or, how safely unlink from app headers that really didnt used?

generally speaking  premature optimization is not a good idea.
Normally those tricks we learned from stone age are picked by tools already.

So if you experice performance/optimization issue

  • Will app sizes increase across the board because of the new iPad?

After the release of the new iPad on Wednesday, most apps figure to update their capabilities accommodate the new iPad's boosted resolution. And it appears that this process will result in an appreciable — if not significant — increase in app size. For example, Apple's Find My Friends app has gone from 14MB to 18MB in an update optimized for the new iPad Retina display. GarageBand went from 768MB to 801MB. Obviously, for users who download lots of apps (like me), these app size increases represent a strong argument against purchasing a new iPad with the minimum capacity of 16GB. What do you think?

People seem to be focusing on the size creep in apps, however, this is likely to be functionality driven more than due to the display for most apps. The real driver that I have found wrt storage space is videos. Now with the new display it is likely that people will move more to HD videos from iTunes, etc.. and this will be what drives the increase in storage required.
If your photos are compressed JPEGs then what you'll have to think about is how many videos you want to carry. There is also the possibility that with the new screen resolution that people start to store pictures at higher resolutions also which might drive storage.
Either way HD is a canny move by Apple as it will ultimately drive revenue growth through iTunes ;-)

I see that my email app is 1.8gb while my google mail app is only 34mb. Why is the mail app size so big in comparison. Deleting emails seems to make no difference.

  • App size "Microsoft Project Siena"

I hope that's the correct forum.
A few minutes ago I saw that the app size of the app Microsoft Project Siena was 11 GB on my surface.
I uninstall the app and had much more space. I reinstalled the app and now the app size is 54,6 MB.
How is it possible that the app size was suddenly 11 GB?

I do not know. With my published apps I have no problems with the size.
Ok, when I have lots of media in an app, then the this siena file have a big size. But the normal Siena App, the app that creates the apps, the size increase, when I work with it and handle with several media.
When I look in the Settings of my Surface the app size is getting bigger and bigger (not from a sample app).
That's very strange. Is that maybe a general problem of the app? I think it is not normal, that the size of an installed app increase...

  • Reducing apps size using the "strip" command

    Hello,
I'm trying to create a Terminal script to reduce all my apps size, using the "strip" command.
Therefore, I have to look up into all the .app packages of my hard drive to find all the exec files, and then apply the strip command to them.
The thing is I am a complete newbie, and all I come up with is : (without the ")
"find . -name "exec" -exec strip '{}' \;"
But it doesn't seem to work at all...
I think this is due to the name reference.
-> How do I find Unix executable files (even inside the .app packages) using the "find" command?
-> And how do I correctly apply the "strip" command to them?
    thanks for your help!

I think that you need to check the -perm option of find.

I couldn't find the edit button on my original post so I am posting an update here.
I have gone through more apps and have had good luck on all but one more.  And it's not that the app doesn't work, I am talking about the Yahoo Weather app, It works fine, but when you swipe between cities the screen lags a bit and it sometimes doesn't move between pages the way it should.  On iOS 7.1.2 it was smooth as butter but on iOS 8.0, not so much.  I will post a note in the app store to let them know.  I really like the Yahoo app better than the new stock app.
I have been going through my games and they all work fine. Angry Birds (Original and Stella), Canabalt, Minecraft, Bejeweled 2, Silly Walks, PopWords, Doodle Jump, Deep Green all seem to work just fine.
Starbucks app works as it should.
I will stop back again next week after I have had the weekend to play with it in detail and post my thoughts again.

  • IPhone app sizes getting big?

I have a 5s, and I use apps like tumblr and Instagram. These apps in particular have huge app sizes on my iPhone (between 200 mb to 400 mb) and it takes up my space quicker than downloading apps theirselves. The only solution I know of is to delete and re-install them, but that's nothing fun to do on a daily basis. Is there any other way I can keep these app sizes down or does the system automatically delete the files to make them smaller?

it seems that problem is with your computer,
and 'wrong signature of downloaded file' indicates problems
like virus infection, Bad Ram or Hard Disk, or bad internet connection.
so it's better to use another computer and other internet connection.

  • Ipad apps size shows as huge - how do I fix things?

I have an iPad and an iPad mini and have installed the same apps on both.  I reset/wiped the iPad mini to factory defaults (to fix intermittent crashes) and then reinstalled all apps from the App store but have not (yet) done this for the iPad (which seems to be working fine without any intermittent crashes).
My question relates to the storage size of the apps on both the iPad and the iPad mini, as shown in the coloured bars in iTunes.
The apps size for the reinstalled apps on the iPad mini show as 5.06 GB for 86 apps.
The apps size for the apps on the iPad show as 24.09 GB for 89 apps.
I'm not sure why there are 3 more apps on the iPad but even this cannot explain the huge difference in storage sizes (5.06 GB vs. 24.09 GB).  The biggest apps I have are some TomTom navigation apps (max size 2 GB) -- but these TomTom apps are not even installed on either iPad or iPad mini (only on my iPhone).
Can anyone help me understand the reason for the huge storage size difference on the two iPads and show/tell me how to free up the inflated storage space?
I guess I could do this by resetting and reinstalling the iPad (as I did for the iPad mini), but I was hoping there may be an easier solution.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
The reason for the discrepancy in app sizes was due to the Zinion app on the older iPad having locally stored magazine downloads for the past 3 years which had not been redownloaded onto the iPad mini after it had been reset to factory defaults.
I've now tidied things up by removing old downloads no longer needed and available storage on the iPad is now back to where it should be.

  • Not minimizing the app size

My IPAD screen(apps) size is not minimizig. How can minimize or get normal size of home screen and allother apps.

Do you mean that the screen looks like it's zoomed in ? If you do then try double-tapping the screen with 3 fingers and see if that zooms it back out - and if it does then set Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom 'off'. If it doesn't zoom you back out then try triple-clicking the home button and see if that turns it off, and if it does you can then change what a triple-click does via Settings > General > Accessibility > Triple-Click Home.

  • IPhone 5 (16GB) iOS 7.0.4 Mail App size is 1GB and continuously increasing. How to reduce the size of the Mail App?

    Hi,
    I am using an iPhone 5 (16GB) iOS 7.0.4.
Currently the size of the mail app is 1GB and is continously increasing, even though the advanced settings in the mail account have been set as following:
    MOVE DISCARDED MESSAGES INTO:
    Deleted Mailbox
    DELETED MESSAGES:
    Remove: After one day
    INCOMING SETTINGS:
Delete from Server: When removed from Inbox
The problem that I am facing is that only a few emails reside on my iPhone as I keep deleting emails, which are also deleted from the server automatically because of the settings as above, which is perfectly fine. The emails are deleted from the Mail app and only a very few of them are visible which I have not deleted as yet, and all is fine till here. The problem is that the size of the Mail app is more than 1GB and is continously increasing, when i check the size of the Mail app in the Settings > General > Usage section.
When I search for an email that has previously been deleted from the search feature by swiping down in the main page, it still comes up in the search, and upon clicking the searched email, it takes me into the Mail app, however, the mail is not there. I have tried searching for emails which were deleted weeks ago, and they still come up in the search feature, however, they DO NOT open in the Mail app when i click them within the search feature in the main page.
Up until a couple of months ago, the size of the Mail app was about 5.2GB and at this point I had no space on my 16GB iPhone 5, therefore I resetted my phone two months ago, and after a complete reset of the iPhone 5, the size of the Mail app went back to 0.3KB (like it was brand new out-of the box); however, within a matter of two months the size of the Mail app has now exceeded 1GB and is continously increasing, as I receive alot of emails which is why I delete them on daily basis and even delete them from the Trash folder (mailbox).
I have read alot of blogs and even checked with other friends using similar settings on the same model, however, I just cant seem to figure this out. I would really appreciate if someone can help me with this issue as I dont want to have to reset it again after another 2-3 months.
There are practically only 14-15 emails on my Mail app with not alot of KBs for these emails, and the trash folder is also empty, but the size of the Mail app is still not reducing. Please help!!
    Regards,
    Shoaib Malik

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
Also consider deleting and reinstalling the Mail Account in question.

  • App size in system information not the same as app size in finder. What's causing this or which is right?

As you can see from the image above, finder is showing that apps are taking up nearly 30 GB, nearly 25 GB less than system information. What is causing this or which one is the actual size of the apps. It's not as if I'm runing out of space , I'm just a bit curious.

Now Carolyn, hopefully It'll work now!

  • Calculating App sizes on Startup

Each time I startup my Mac, I hear the hard drive spinning and the computer's less responsive than usual. I finally found that it's going through all the apps in the Applications folder and calculating their size, plus possibly indexing my drive. I'm sure it's calculating other things size as well. Sometimes this goes on for several minutes. Is this normal? Is there any way to stop it? It seems like it would just remember the size from the last shutdown.

Open the Applications folder, CMD+J, and deselect size (only available if the folder view is set to list). That should fix it for that folder. If any others are also set that way, change them.

  • App sizes - stated and actual

    Hi,
I was tidying up my iPad, only to be amazed at how big some of the apps installed were.
For instance, Angry Birds Seasons HD shows as being 71.7MB on the App Store, whereas it actually takes up 613.9MB of space on my iPad! Another example is Smash Cops, which shows as being only 200MB on the App Store, while it actually is 499MB. I could go on and on...
Does anyone know why this is? I can't believe that is it user data. Does the app get larger once it has downloaded and installed itself on the iPad?
All of a sudden the hard disk on my iPad seems so much smaller... Any information or ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Thanks!
    Some more examples:
    - World Factbook 2014 HD on the App Store is listed as 127MB large, whereas is actually consumes 224.5MB on my iPad
    - Real Racing 3 on the App Store is listed as being 1.1GB in size, whereas it consumers 1.6GB of hard disk space on my iPad
...sllightly frustrating, as the deal-breaker is how much space on my iPad it takes up (as opposed to the size of the installer file...
