App Store and others Not Responding in Mountain Lion

Since updating to Mountain Lion - from what was a clean and fine Lion system - I can no longer access the App Store, the Security and Prvacy tab of System Preferences (and ONLY that panel) plus other native Apple apps fail like trying to edit a contact in Address Book.
All end in a 'Not Responding' and thus a force quit.
Other apps basically work. Mail - for example - works until I try and copy and paste an email address when thr spinning parasol takes over.
So far - for me - Mountain Lion is proving a disaster and I am hoping this is a some simple setting buried deep somewhere that is just not right.
Can anyone give me any clues where to look before I throw my MacBook pro into the fishpond out of sheer frustration! ?

Andy,
Sorry this is so long...just trying to help and support your efforts. I for one am not convinced your install was damaged (because of my experience below!) but it COULD be. I think mende1's suggestions were a good start.
Not knowing what MBP model and previous OS you have it's difficult to say at this point exactly WHAT the issue is with your upgrade. I have heard the upgrades to Lion and Mtn Lion from anything previous can be problematic, depending on various things and/or how it is done. But usually, the older the MBP model and OS are (or any other Mac for that matter, assuming it CAN be upgraded of course), the more issues there can be.
However, I CAN tell you that I JUST discovered TWO significant bugs in the SysPrefs on a BRAND NEW MBP 2.6Hz, Mid-2012 I received last week, with pre-installed Mnt Lion 10.8 and NO other non-native software installed yet. And sure enough...I JUST returned from the Apple Store where I was able to reproduce the bugs on ALL their computer models, ALL of which were using the 10.8 OS (...and which I am about to report to Apple, but only AFTER replying here first, as I had intended and wanted to do last night, except that I FIRST needed to confirm if they were reproducible and legit at the store, which they are).  So you may have discovered additional new bugs (or not), but obviously you won't know until or unless you do additional testing (ugh - I know!).
I would say your issues are a possible combo of the age of your MBP, the upgrade, and POSSIBLY other bugs in 10.8 that are as yet unknown. Only additional testing and time will tell for sure. At the very least I would back everything up, do a complete wipe via Disk Utility (for good measure) and reinstall 10.8 clean to help rule out possible "upgrade" issues (ie, over a previous OS), then go from there.
I also miss the good ol'  DVD days as well and am not a fan of the new install paradigm with much less control over various parameters. Not to mention the fact is REQUIRES an internet connection. But here we are. (What if I'm in the middle of Borneo when my Mac goes down without an internet connection??! LOL...but seriously.)
Regardless, and for what it's worth, here are the two new SysPref bugs I just discovered in 10.8 and was able to confirm at the Apple Store. As far as I know they are as yet unknown and do not appear anywhere else on this forum. Furthermore, the functions described below work perfectly in 10.6.X and 10.7.X OS (I have another Mid-2007 MBP with 10.6.8 and a 2011 iMac running 10.7.4 for comparison).
Bug 1- Desktop OS contextual menu does not function properly under certain circumstances. Right-click on desktop and select Change Desktop Background. If you're lucky the Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window opens. If it DOES, quit and repeat. The second time it will NOT open - despite the fact SysPrefs actually IS activated (ie, upon the second attempt, assuming it opened the first time and you quit/closed it, the SysPrefs icon bounces in the dock and displays the white orb beneath - indicating it is active - however, the Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window DOES NOT OPEN/APPEAR). In other words, it is open but HIDDEN (bug no.1).
At this point, repeat the selection above again OR...Command-Tab over to the open but hidden SysPrefs icon and voila - the Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window finally APPEARS. Now, quit SysPrefs, and repeat the selection above a THIRD time. Again, the SysPrefs icon bounces but nothing appears. Repeat the selection above again OR Command-Tab over to it's icon and voila - the Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window now APPEARS.
Needless to say, the Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window should ALWAYS open immediately (using the right-click contextual menu selection process above) the FIRST and every time thereafter. But it doesn't in 10.8. Also note that ONLY THE FIRST TIME this is attempted AFTER Restarting the computer OR logging out/in will the Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window appear. Thereafter, it will not - as described above.
Bug 2 - Added folders to the Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window do not stay put. Open the SysPrefs Desktop & Screen Saver dialogue window (opening process doesn't matter) and ADD at least 2-3 other folders to the Folder section below using the + button (regardless of whether or not they contain pictures, for demonstration purposes only). This function obviously allows one to specify NUMEROUS OTHER folders that contain pictures to be used as possible desktop backgrounds, in addition to the default Pictures folder that is there, and the default pics Apple provides above. Now, note the LAST folder that is added to the group of folders (regardless of how many were added) that now appear under Folders. Close/quit SysPrefs. Re-open the Desktop & Screen Savers window again and note that only the LAST folder that was added now resides under Folders and all others, except the defaults, have disappeared (bug no.2).
Not sure if this will be much help Andy but wanted you to know you are not alone and it may not all be you! So much more to say but good luck getting this resolved. It took me forever to figure this out and the full story is so much longer, but I will spare you the boring details. Suffice to say, only trial and error will get you closer to an answer, as frustrating that process can be, but I would start with a clean install and take it from there (despite the transition hassle that route obviously presents - argh!). Hang in there and please let me/us know how it goes.

Cannot update my keynote, pages and numbers from my ipad. I have different accounts, one for app store and other for icloud. What can I do?

You can't merge accounts or transfer iTunes purchases from one Apple ID to another: but there is no problem about using two IDs.
Use your iCloud ID for iCloud for syncing email, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and PhotoStream.
Use your other Apple ID as before for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match.
There's no conflict about doing this, and you won't even notice as Keychain will log you in with the correct ID in each case. It's also better security not to have your iTunes login also your email address, given the number of complaints about hacked iTunes accounts.

  • Update failed causing App Store and other apps to not open anymore

    HELP!!
I was trying to make a general update of OS X v10.8.2 as sugested from the App Store, but something went wrong and it showed "could'nt be updated because of a problem". Now I can't open App Store, Mail and iTunes shows a message saying "This copy of iTunes is corrupted or is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes". Only I can download anything anymore and the App Store won't even start!
    can anyone PLEASE help?

See if you can download and install the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo)
    If not, restore OS X.
Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access the built in utilities using OS X Recovery
From there you can restore your Mac.

  • TextEdit, App Store, Preview do not respond to clicking or keyboard shortcuts

Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina running Mavericks 10.9.4 with all software updated.
A couple of days ago, I opened an image up in Preview only to find that the application would not respond to any clicks or keyboard shortcuts I made. If I were to hover over an icon on the top bar, it would recognize that I was doing that, but not do anything if I clicked on it. Ultimately, the only way to close the program to perform a force quit with Cmd-Opt-Shift-Esc or right-click on the dock and go to "Quit". It does not show up as not responding in the Force Quite menu, and the problem does not go away if I reboot the computer.
I've also experienced the problem in two other apps to date - the App Store and TextEdit. Both will act like they're perfectly okay until I actually go to click on something, in which case they won't respond at all. There's no spinning pinwheel or freezing - it just acts like nothing is happening. (For example, if I launch the App Store from my browser directly to an app page, the "Download" or "Purchase" button will highlight when you hover over it but cannot be pressed. I have launched it from Finder, as well, so it's not that contributing to it.)
These are the only apps I've noticed that are doing it, but they're all Apple apps. In contrast, Finder, iTunes, and Safari work as well as ever. Any help would be much appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • App Store and Updates not loading in Mavericks

    Hi there,
Upgraded my imac to Mavericks and all was well.  Then there were some updates for my Aperture, iPhoto and iMovie (all previously purchased as full copies).  Something went wrong to my internet connection during the updates and the app store repeatedly asked for my Id and password, which I entered.
The downloads finally completed and the apps seem to work ok.
The problem arose when i went back to the app store and it would not open the application.  The toolbar for the app store appears but the appstore software doesnt.  No can not log in to app store to check updates and will not allow to check for updates from the Software Update option at the Apple logo.
Tried to restore from Time Machine but will not all it saying it needs the files for OSX.  Whats going on?
How can I restore the appstore, OSX and not lose my data - this is a family Mac and all our photos of our children and family are on it!
    Any help really appreciated.

If you continue to have problems with the App Store you might try this:
1 - enable the Debug menu in App Store:
    open the Terminal application.
copy the command below and paste into the Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
    followed by Enter.
    launch App Store, login.
2 - select the Debug ➙ Reset Application option:
    3 - try again.

  • HT2693 App Store refund - Developer not responding to contact

I purchased the Countdown App from the App store and then the upgrade to allow the syncing of events between devices.
The syncing doesn't work, I've contacted the developer twice over the space of a month and he isn't responding, should I initiate a charge back on my credit card?

Just sent this to Apple Support:
I purchased the App Countdown from the developer IAM Web Services, I then purchased the in app add on (£1.99) to allow syncing between devices which doesn't function.
I have twice contacted IAM Web Services for assistance this month and on both occasions been ignored, no replies whatsoever.
I'm at the point where I think I should instigate a charge back via my credit card company unless you have an alternative solution.

  • App store and Safari not working after Time Machine restore to new hardware.

I just had to install a new hard drive to my mid 2010 imac.  I restored with time machine.  I cannot find the original OS disc.  Upon restoring it appears there is a problem with the webkit framework as Safari, App store, and Skype all freeze upon clicking on them and after bouncing, they never open.  Chrome is working.  What do I do?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

  • Why does App Store show i haven't bought mountain lion???

I've bought the OX X Mountain Lion and truly installed. But I enter the App Store again. I see the price tagged on the Mountain Lion software which means I haven't bought yet? At the same time, I check the Purchased page on App Store. I can't find any purchasing record either. Anything else I bought is showed up. Why??? Please help me to solve it. Thanks a lot : )

Same thing has happened to me. I purchased and installed Mtn Lion (on this MacBook Pro). I even installed it on my home Mac mini. However, when I went to the App Store, it was not listed it in my Purchases list, and it has a purchase price button on the Mtn Lion app page. I restarted the computer(s), signed out & back in w/ correct Apple ID, trashed preferences, asked it to check for unfinished downloads, tried on other computers (one w/ Mtn Lion, one w/ Lion installed)...nothing worked so far.
Then I stumbled on the answer...
Go to the top Menu bar > Store and click on View My Account (accountname), then enter you password. In the following dialog window, you should see listed Hidden Purchases under the iTunes in the Cloud section. Click on the View Hidden Purchases and the next screen should show Mountain Lion as hidden...simple click Unhide. It should now show in your Purchases list as well as offer Download button on Mtn Lion info page.

Facetime 1.0.4 is not signing in. I did a new install as I did not have Facetime on my Mac OS X 10.6.8. Downloaded from app store. Message is: Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again.
Network checked all working fine. Thanks.

    Hello ChuckLoyal,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to FaceTime on your Mac. I would use these troubleshooting steps from the article named:
    FaceTime for Mac: Troubleshooting FaceTime
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4185
    Activating FaceTime for Mac
Use your Apple ID to register and use FaceTime. FaceTime registration validates your Apple ID and email address for use with FaceTime.
If you are unable to activate FaceTime, try the following:
Sign in to FaceTime for Mac using a valid Apple ID. After you validate the email address for use with FaceTime, other FaceTime users can connect to you using that email address. If you encounter issues registering or using an Apple ID account:
Ensure that you have an active Internet connection.
Verify that you are using a valid Apple ID at appleid.apple.com. You can also create an Apple ID or reset your password from this website.
Check that your email address is verified in FaceTime > Preferences. If FaceTime > Preferences shows your email status as "verifying," follow the instructions in the verification email that was sent to complete the process.
Toggle FaceTime off and on in FaceTime > Preferences.
If still unable to Sign In follow the instructions in FaceTime, Game Center, Messages on OS X: Troubleshooting Sign in
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • No connection to apps store or iTunes after download of mountain lion on "other" user accounts on this mac

after downloading mountain lion my other two users are unable to access i tunes /or apps store . There seems to be alot of "querky" thing that have become a problem useing since this download ,has anyone had similare problems?

Don't quote me on this, but I think that the rules may have changed for Mountain Lion and you may need either 2 matching pairs or at least matching modules installed in both bottom slots.
as per > iMac: How to remove or install memory
Additional notes i5 and i7 Quad Core iMac computers come with both top memory slots populated. These computers will not start up if only a single DIMM is installed in any bottom slot; these computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any top slot. Core Duo iMac computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any slot, top or bottom. ("Top" and "bottom" slots refer to the orientation of the slots in the pictures below. "Top" refers to the slots closest to the display; "bottom" refers to the slots closest to the stand).
