App Store not responding (Mountain Lion)

Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble with App Store after reformatting my MBP hard drive and restoring everything from a backup. App Store is unresponsive from launch; as soon as I open it, it goes to a spinning beachball, and Finder identifies it as "not responding." There is a spinning progress meter in the upper-left corner of the window, and all the App Store buttons and text fields are greyed out. I left it running overnight, with no apparent change; Activity Monitor shows it with low but constant level of CPU usage (~0.8%).
History: I had to reformat my MacBook Pro's hard drive after somehow knocking loose a RAM chip a week ago. I reinstalled OSX, and then had to manually restore my Time Machine backup since my external hard drive also got damaged... It's really been a great week Specifically, I stuck the hard drive into a Linux desktop with a SATA cable, used tmfs to copy the most recent backup to a different external hard drive, then copy-and-pasted my home directory back onto my MacBook Pro.
Current status: I just tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, with no luck. Because of all the copy-and-pasting through a Linux filesystem, a lot of my file ownerships and permissions are screwed up, but everything passes a Disk Utility permissions verification and repair. I have also tried deleting ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore, with no effect.
Thanks in advance for any help!

OK, apologies, but I already solved the problem (I think). Console indicated that the problem was actually that the App Store was trying to file a crash report from the previous iteration of killing the process with command-alt-escape, but didn't have permissions to write to the relevant folder (see below). The folder in question had been set to owner 'root' by Ubuntu when I recovered my broken Time Machine drive, so I changed the owner back to myself. App Store opens and operates normally now.
I'm a bit puzzled as to why Disk Utility wasn't able to identify and fix the permissions on these system files and folders. Does anybody know why, and if there's a way for me to batch-fix all of my files that Ubuntu has switched to 'root'?

here is a "copied" version with credits for those looking for a solution to an annoying problem Apple should patch.  (Yes, I'm aware of the irony of that statement)
July 18, 2012 · by Arthur Lockman · in Apple, Tutorials
After doing a reinstall of Lion a few weeks ago, I found that my computer suddenly would reject every VeriSign certificate that it encountered. Using Chrome, that meant that I couldn’t even access Twitter.com, because it thought that the certificate was wrong. I couldn’t login to the Apple developer portal, I couldn’t authenticate a device with XCode, I couldn’t make a purchase at Apple.com, I couldn’t download updates from the Mac App Store, and I couldn’t login to Mint.com, among other sites. I essentially couldn’t do anything that used a VeriSign certificate for SSL.
What did I do? I called my trusty AppleCare advisor, hoping for an answer. I thought that maybe they could help me figure it out. After getting to senior support, I was told to reinstall Lion, which I did to no avail. My case was then forwarded to the Apple engineering team, with 3 to 5 days to wait until I had an answer. I looked around, through my console logs and through Keychain access, and finally came up with an answer, and a solution to my problems.
It turned out that my solution was pretty simple. I had to delete a few files and reset one to its default setting.
Delete the files /var/db/crls/crlcache.db and /var/db/crls/ocspcache.db. These can be found using Finder’s Go >; Go To Folder menu (Cmd + Shift + G). This resets the cache of accepted certificates in the system. It doesn’t remove them, it just forces the system to rebuild the caches upon restart.
Open Keychain Access (/Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access). Select Certificates in the Category picker on the left side. In the search bar, type in the word Class. Look through that list, and find any certificates that have a blue + symbol over their icon. These are the ones you need to modify.
Select one that has a blue +, and hit Command + I. Click the disclosure triangle beside the “Trust” list to show the list of permissions. Now, what we need to do is to set this certificate to use the system defaults. However, for some reason, when you select it, it doesn’t save. So what you need to do is this. Under “Trust”, where it says “Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)”, change the dropdown menu to say “No Value Specified”. Then, close the window. It will ask for your administrator permissions. Then, open the info pane for that certificate again. Under “Trust” again, now set the dropdown that says “When using this certificate:” to say “Use System Defaults”. You can then close out of the info pane, and enter your password again. Do this for any of the certificates that have a blue + on their icon. There should only be one or two at most.
    Restart your system.
This solution seemed to work just fine for me. All of my certificate problems have been fixed. It must be something with the OSX installer that causes this certificate issue. I’ll file a bug report. Hopefully someone looks into it and fixes the flaw in the OS. And, I hope that this fixed the flaw for you.
Addendum – a note on security:
This procedure won’t affect the security of your Mac. I’ve had some questions come in about that, and if anything, it makes it more secure because then sites that require SSL certificates can actually use them, unlike before where they might default to non secure connections because the certificate was bad.

  • Cannot get progress to show in app store download of Mountain Lion

Having to re-download Mountain Lion on my mid 2009 MBP from overseas. The ML app shows "downloading" in dock with progress bar under it (and just a hint of blue for hours now), but in the App Store on the Purchases tab it just shows the Mountain Lion app with a gray "Download" button. I want to see the progress of the download since I'm overseas and it could take a couple days. If I click on the "Download" button it goes clear for a minute but goes back to the gray "Download". I've tried closing and re-opening App Store, restarting the computer and I've also tried doing it all in Safe Mode. No difference. I can't be sure something is actually happening without a progress meter. Any ideas out there?

There may be no apparent "progress bar" in the App Store. It may be a bug associated with this particular download. Unfortunately I am not in a position to determine if this is related to you being overseas or not.
To determine if it is actually downloading use Launchpad. You should see a fairly obvious new icon with an associated progress bar. Make sure you check every Launchpad page by swiping left / right.
The downloaded file will also be in your Applications folder. When it finishes, it looks like this (Mavericks icons are shown; Mountain Lion is similar):
Check your Downloads folder. Before it finishes downloading, it will have a "progress bar" at the bottom. While it is downloading it looks like this:
If it's paused, click the icon to restart it.
Once it completes the icon will appear in Applications and Launchpad, it's just easier to find in Launchpad.
    Launchpad equivalents:
When it's finished it looks like this:
If it really is not downloading read Mac App Store: How to resume interrupted downloads
    Open the Mac App Store.
From the Store menu, choose Sign In.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Purchases to get to your Purchases Page.
Click the Resume button next to the app name.
If that doesn't work, "sign out" of the App Store, and sign back in again.
If that doesn't work, try restarting your Mac.
If that doesn't work, write back.

  • App store not responding when trying to upgrade to Mavericks

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook pro (2.7 Ghz intel Core i7, 4 GB) with snow leopard (10.6.8) which I wanted to upgrade (finally) to Mavericks.
Sadly every time I press in the App store "free upgrade", the spinning wheel pops up and after a few seconds, when I select the application list I see that App store is no longer responding and I have to Force Quit the application.
Anyone an idea how I can resolve this problem?  Let me know if you require any additional information.
    Thank you for your help
    Tom

I'm not sure I quite understand what you are doing, so:
Open App Store and sign in with your Apple ID. Click on the Updates icon in the toolbar. After a while of  a spinning gear a listing of any available updates should appear. Mavericks should be one of them. To the right you should see an Update button. Click that button to start the download.
If you continue to have a problem with App Store then see: Troubleshooting the Mac App Store and Mac App Store may become unresponsive when installing apps for possible solutions. Or under Quick Links click on the Support link to get help.

  • Problems with App Store since installing Mountain Lion

I have recently installed Mountain Lion and since then have been unable to use the App Store. When I launch it comes up with an error message stating 'App Store cannot verify a secure connection with the App Store.Would you like to connect anyway?'  If you hit continue the application flashes black and white but goes no further. Has anyone else had this problem and what could be done about it.

Yes at work and no at home but the problem occurs regardless of this

  • Why is my app store not responding?

I'm having problems with my app store. It does not open. I can't download any new apps. Any solutions?

    - double tap your home button
    - force quit all apps from the multitasking bar
    Then try a hard reset:
    - hold the home button and sleep/wake button at the same time
    - the iPhone will turn off(keep holding) then release both buttons when the apple logo appears
Now try open and load the app store again.

  • App Store Access with Mountain Lion - Administrator only?

    Hi All:
After installing ML, I noticed that I only have access to the app store when logged into the Administrator account.  When logged in through any other account, my app store has the message "Cannot Connect to the App store".  My internet connection is fine.
Has this always been the case where administrators can only access the app store?
    Thanks!

I've seen this too.  Sort of.  On my MBPro I was able to access the App Store with my user account to install updates after upgrading to ML.  On my iMac, it has been hit and miss, mostly miss.  The day I upgraded to ML I was able to install updates but it took several tries.  I attributed it to the servers being loaded down with the release of ML. However, I've not been able to access the store for three days now for one last install.  After reading your post I tried my admin account and it worked.  This doesn't answer your question but thanks for helping me out.
