Have a MacBook Pro4,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Went to the App Store to download Mountain Lion. A quick spin of the gear, then it stopped. Nothing more will happen despite several tries. Of course I put in my iTunes password when prompted. Specs say this should be possible, but there are no error messages. Why? There's plenty of room on the hard drive.
Any ideas?

Patience, little grasshopper! It is a 4.5GB monster floating down the wire. Even with my office's Gbps link, it takes over 40 minutes.

I just tried redeeming my software online. I went through the whole process, got the password, and proceeded to get the software to download. But soon after, the wifi connection was disconnected, and when I tried to connect the ethernet cable, the entire software had disappeared from my launchpad. You shouldn't have to re-enter the code, Lion should be on your purchases list so you can re-download it. In the App Store, click Purchases... do you see ML there?

Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours

I had never turned my iMac off so I still don't understand why the download paused, & when I looked in my Applications folder there was no Mountain Lion, but your words, "However, you can pause and resume the download as many times as you want" encouraged me to look deeper & try harder!! I clicked & double-clicked (& multi-clicked!) the Mtn Lion icon in my dock to no avail but finally, I clicked & HELD the click for about 7 seconds . . . . . . . & then a little pop-up came & asked me if I want to "Resume the download" or stop it!! So I slid the cursor over to "Resume..." & it's downloading again!! ~~I HOPE!! I guess 4.4 GB of OS update will take more than a little time to get in there!

No reason to be embarassed. You are not alone.
You will need an external drive. If you have a Time Machine drive without enough disk space you can create the clone there however it's advised that you keep your Time Machine and clone on separate drives. If the drive dies you loose both types of backup.
Download and install the clone software. Everyone has their favorite. These are the two most common applications used. I prefer SuperDuper because of it's simplicity in setting up. It's also free for the first clone where with CCC you have to give a Credit Card then cancel if you do not want to keep.

I have been messing with this and 4 other problems on this laptop for the last 32 hours. I'm getting tired and frustrated. Also, I haven't even put music on THIS Laptop because on my other one, I ended up with at least 5 copies of EACH SONG. Let's see 636 X 5 = 3,180 and they were in EVERY POSSIBLE LOCATION!!!

The OS X Lion installer takes more than 4 GB of space, so it is normal for most Internet connections to take the download more than an hour.
If you want to see the download progress, open the Mac App Store and go to Purchases.
Before upgrading, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

Mountain Lion is a 64-bit operating system, and an Intel Core Duo processor is only 32-bit, so you can't use Mountain Lion on your Mac. You can keep using your actual OS X version or buy a new Mac if you want Mountain Lion
