App update frozen

After receiving an update to an app on my iPhone, the update process is frozen with the app update showing half complete, but never finishing.  How do I cancel the update?

What App is it that you are trying to update or is it the new iOS 7?  If iOS 7 update is hanging please see:

  • App update frozen, what now?

hi, i'm new to this. i okayed the updates of six apps and the first one froze. it reads "waiting..." beneath a grey box. the progress bar in said app is blank. now the other five app that were to be updated are unresponsive. can anyone help extract me from this predicament?

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • IPad 2 app updates frozen on waiting

Saw update notices in app store on iPad 2. Until today downloads worked fine. Today, two attempted updates are stuck "waiting".
Going back to app store shows "update" (like I didn't try download). Turned pad off and on and still find the two individual apps "waiting."

    No.
Also, note that I am doing this with a wireless connection at a hotel in Mexico. Though connection is a bit slow, I am sendin/receiving e-mail just fine. One of the apps I am trying to update is the s.f. Chronicle, which I was reading earlier this a.m. Could it be that somehow the hotel is blocking downloads (how could it differentiate?)

Since migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and upgrading to iTunes 11, the latter has frozen while syncing my devices, usually while at the “determining apps to sync” stage of the process.  If I am attempting to download app updates before attempting to sync, the problem normally occurs at the first “installing app x” stage.  In addition, the whole iTunes experience is extremely sluggish and will even freeze while searching for a track.  Everything worked fine on Windows 7.  So far, I have repaired the program several times and have checked for compatibility issues, but there is no Windows 8 option in the combo box, obtained after right-clicking the icon and selecting Properties/Compatibility.  As a result, I am unable to sync my devices. If I uninstall iTunes before re-installing, will this affect my iTunes libraries?  Does anyone have any suggestions?

After going by elimination to isolate if the problem was from (1) iTunes app, (2) my computer or (3) my old iPhone 4G, I figured out what my problem was.
    1) First I deleted & reinstalled iTunes on my Windows PC without succes, my playlist did not changed on my iPhone.
    2) I tested a successful #sync from the iMac at work.
So my conclusion is: The hard drive on my Windows PC is full and that is affecting iTunes SYNC functionalities.
So I'll do a back-up then run a "Clean Install" of my Windows OS, hoping that it will fix my SYNC problems.

Reset time, press and hold both the power and home buttons for 10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons. Wait 15-20 seconds till your iPad starts on it's own. Check the downloads.

  • TS3274 Apps are frozen while updating for ipad2

I updated all and the apps are frozen and not updating. The update bar hasn't moved

    Hi all
Just after posting my question I saw on the "more like this" box on the right here a topic that answered my concern.
    What a relief !
Thanks to "stevejobsfan 0123 in sunny California. His suggestion to another member was , I quote "Try a reset:
Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears.
    Worked a treat
    Safe no losses.
Once the ipad2 restarted there was a message saying the apps (which were frozen mid install), could not be purchased at this time , please try again .
    Whew !
My first time here , great forum thanks community

  • HT204266 App update is frozen.

App update is frozen.  Icon is greyed out and "waiting...."

I have got the same problem with my Facebook icon on iPad. I think something went wrong when I tried to do an update the last time. The icon (as described above) has been faded out for some days and is showing the word "waiting". I have tired everything I can think of (trying to delete the icon (will not work as, while the icon 'shakes', no "x" appears to left for it to be deleted). Any help welcome.

  • Frozen app update

Help, I was performing an app update on my iPad and it is frozen in the installation phase.

What app is it? Can you restart your device, and see what happens? Or try to sign out then back in again.

  • ITunes freezes downloading app updates

I'm running 10.5 (141) on my iMac running Lion and am running into a problem where iTunes will constantly freeze when I download my app updates.  If I download updates individually, there doesn't seem to be a problem and if I turn off simultaneous downloads, the probelm will be less frequent but it always seems to happen if I have a bunch of apps to download.  The scenario is this, I will click on "Download All Free Updates" and it will start downloading away.  Things will be fine for a while but after a few minutes of downloading, I'll notice that suddenly the progress bars stop moving and the estimated times start going up.  At this point, iTunes is effectively hung.  I can sometimes press a few buttons like "pause all" and this will pause all the non-active downloads but not the ones in progress.  Even though I can get to the Finder, I cannot quit iTunes, force quit iTunes or restart my system.  If I try to force quit iTunes from the dock, that will usuually cause the dock to freeze.  Each time this happens, my only recourse is a hard reboot.  I've tried having Activitiy Monitor running and a Termimal window open at the same time but when this happen, both of those apps hang at the same time so I'm not able to type any commands or quit any processes.
This is any annoying problem because each time I do a hard reboot, I risk corrupting my iTunes library.  I've had similar problems with iTunes in the past freezing but those were random.  This always happens during app downloads.  I had hoped that this kind of thing would stop once iTunes was a true Cocoa application but it still seems to bring the whole system down whenever it has a major problem.  My guess is that it's crashing some network process and that in turn in hanging the whole system.
Luckily, I don't actually need to update the apps on my computer and can do it directly from my iDevices but it's frustrating that this problem exists.  Any ideas?

I can't believe that no one answered Eric D's querry!  It has been over a year!  Come on Apple iPad users, help us out.
I have a similar problem that arrose recently.  I have had my iPad for a couple of years, no problem.  But recently, I notied that I had a number of apps that had free upgrades so I began to download them.  ArtRage is one of my important apps as I use it on my iPad andI have ArtRage Pro on my iMac.  However, when I attempted to download the latest upgrade, ArtRage froze.  The app is greyed out on the iPad and it can't be used and I can't download the upgrade either.  When I try to upgrade, it goes to "waiting ..." then, I receive an error window, "Unable to Download Application."  ArtRage" could not be downloaded at this time: with a "Done" and "Retry" button.  If I hit the Retry button, eventually the same error window reappears.  This is a Catch 22!  Moreover, the ArtRage App is frozen so I can't even use the previous version.
I checked with ArtRage help and they say this is an Apple problem (or a Appstore problem).  I now have my SketchBook Pro app frozen like this also.  These are two of my most importat and most used apps.  I need help.
Just to make things clear, I was able to download Dragon a few minutes ago.  So this problem does not effect all the apps I need to download.

  • App update freezes

During an app update on my iPad, the update froze. I have tried a re-set, I've powered on and off, I've shut the app down, I've signed in and out of iTunes. Nothing helps, still frozen. I'd like to just delete the app, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this on the iPad. I cannot connect to a computer for the next two weeks, I'm iPad only for that time. Using iOS 6.0.1
    Any thoughts appreciated, thanks.

  • How can I unfreeze app updates?

How can I update frozen app updates

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
    If that doesn't work:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

  • Two of my apps have frozen and are not installing

Two of my apps have frozen and keep saying installing but nothing is happening

I am still continuing to have this problem.  Try the below actions see if they work for you, unfortunately they never worked for me.
Have you tried updating the apps in your iTunes library, then syncing your phone?
Are you connected to WiFi? If so, one simple thing to try is to turn WiFi off, wait about 30 seconds or so, then turn WiFi back on.
A couple of other things you can try are turning Airplane mode on, waiting 30 seconds or so, then turning Airplane mode off. Also: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings...this will delete all saved WiFi passwords.

  • App update button showing

The update icon showing #apps requiring updates will not function - blank frozen screen. Called Support but they could not fix. Went to Genius Bar and was told I was 5th person with same problem - Apple system problem. They reset my iPad and it functioned properly the rest of the day. Inconvenient as setting were lost and needed to be reset. Woke up this morning with 16 app updates showing - same problem reoccurred, blank frozen screen. My son had the same proble this morning as well. Anyone hear about this from Apple?

We only know what we have read here in the forum and what we read from any websites that might be talking about this. There have been hundreds of discusssions about the problem with no resolution yet.
You can update the apps using the purchased tab and it is a bit time consuming, but not as time consuming as having to reset all settings.
According to Fly150 in another discussion, this is a workaround - for the time being.
If you want to update the Apps while waiting for Apple to fix Updates:
    1. Go to App Store
    2. Select Purchased
    3. Select All
    4. Scroll down to find the Apps showing update
    5. Select update on the Apps
This should update the Apps and get rid of the update count in App Store.
