App updates in iTunes 12

Can I get a simple answer to this question? Is it true that you can no longer get app updates (for your iOS devices) from within iTunes 12? In past versions of iTunes, app updates were announced prominently when you plugged in an iOS device to sync. There are "badges" on my iPhone apps now showing that updates are available and I can update them directly using the phone. But there seems to be no such function now in iTunes 12. It would seem a simple and basic function of iTunes isn't it? And if the feature is now removed, well at least tell us how the task is supposed to be performed.

Small correction: the date and version number are displayed, sorry for the mistake. The rest of the problem still stands, though, the descriptions of the changes are missing.

  • Is it possible to auto-download app update in iTunes, like podcasts can do?

Is it possible to auto-download apps in iTunes, like podcasts can do?
I wish I could set app updates, in iTunes, to auto-download every hour when available just like my podcasts do. Am I overlooking some way to do this or is this really a wish-list feature?

It is not possible, I assume due to certain apps charging for updates (as will be the likely case for sat-nav map updates etc). This is why iTunes requests your password for confirmation that you want to install the update, whether it is free or chargeable.
What I would like to see is the option to reject an update! That way, if you don't want to pay to update an app, you can remove the notification spot on your iPhone and in iTunes!

  • How do I get update iphone apps update without itunes match?

I'm not a Luddite but ... Don't want Cloud, too many problems, and don't want to update to iTunes 10.7 if match is included. So the question becomes how do I get updates for my apps without the new iTunes store agreement. I feel as though I'm dealing with Micro-you-know-who and having a bunch of garbage shoved down my throat. And looking through all the questions about software not working properly... I've been there before. What is going on with Apple? Makes me really nervous.
    Help, please .............

Match is optional (in fact you have to pay extra for it) - so carry on as before.
iCloud is separate from iTunes and is used for syncing - it's generally recommended you use a separate Apple Id for the stores(s) and iCloud anyway - that way the family can share music & apps but sync individually.

  • Cannot BULK download App Updates after iTunes 9.0.1 Update

I had a bunch of updates sitting there, and I decided to update iTunes before doing them. I thought that would be smart. However, after the iTunes update to 9.0.1 was complete I got this message when I tried to bulk download the app updates:
*"The information on this page is outdated.*
*Click OK to refresh the page. If you have available updates after refreshing, click Download All Free Updates."*
I don't know what "refresh the page" means; I tried restarting iTunes & restarting the computer and nothing is working. The information is not outdated, as I really do have to download all the updates that are shown. I had to MANUALLY download each update, which is kind of a pain, but at least I was able to get the updates. The "download all free updates" (for a bulk download) button refuses to work though.
Any ideas? I don't want to have to manually update each app every time if I don't have to. Thanks!

All I have to do is select Applications from the Library list - then in the lower right corner select - Check for updates - if there are any then I select Download updates from the page that comes up and iTunes d/l the updates.

  • App updates in iTunes confusion

Whenever I open iTunes it always says under applications that I have updates but whenever I click on e.g. 9 updates available I'm told there are no updates!!! It's really annoying. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can resolve it? Thanks in advance.

Thanks jlevinson, I appreciate your insight. However, it just so happens that I have "I Say Free", a classic game that brings back memories from my childhood of the electronic version called Simon. The app updated just fine on my iOS4 iphone. However, I ran into the problem you mentioned on my ipad, which does not have iOS4 yet. Contrary to what you say though, itunes does not remove the old I Say Free version from my iPad when syncing but, rather, will not update and leaves the old copy on my iPad so it continues to work...no need to go digging around in the trash for the old version, it automatically stays. A dialogue box comes up saying as much. When iOS4 comes out for iPad in the fall, it will then update automatically. I will have never lost use of I Say Free at any time. I like this automation. So, I respect your opinion, but your understanding of the update process is incorrect. Just as we have the choice in itunes to sync songs automatically or manually, I would like the choice to set the apps to update automatically. I think that is not too much to ask.
And I always click update all without checking the specs. I don't have time to check the specs on each app update nor would I want to. I would really like it to be automatic so I can focus on productivity or consumption. And by the way, if an app that I really need won't work because my device is obsolete, I will be getting the next generation device. I have never had that rare issue though. Your point might be used for this situation though: Using the I Say Free example, if I did not previously have that app on my iPad, I would not be able to get it today because the old version is not available anymore, but that is an entirely different issue than the issue of this thread.
So, yes, I would still want to have automatic updates.
Thanks for your input though and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Why am I getting a message that I need to log into the Canadian store for app updates and I tune purchases?

Should you be in the Canadian App Store? Is that your store? Of not - or of you need to see what store you are in.
    Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID
    Tap your ID
    Tap View Apple ID
    Enter your password
Go to country/region in the popup window to change the store

    I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.5.1.
I'm able to sync with my iphone fine and access the iTunes store (although very slowly - can take minutes to load), but when I try to download updates to my iphone apps via iTunes, it can never conncet to the the store.  It just says "Accessing iTunes Store..." in the top/middle screen.  All other internet activity is fine on the computer.  Just get this "Accessing iTunes Store..." message at the top ALL THE TIME.  Please help???

I understand that your App Store does not show your app updates. Please follow the steps below to help resolve the issue.
    1. Close All Apps on iPad: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    2. Sign out of iTunes & App Stores: Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Tap AppleID > Sign out
    3. Reset All Settings: Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    4. Reboot iPad
    5. Sign back into iTunes and App Stores: Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Sign In with AppleID
Thank you for being an iTunes store customer. Apple appreciates your business.

  • Downloading app updates problem - iTunes 11.1

Since I downloaded and installed the new version, it keeps freezing when downloading app updates, they get so far then sort-of hang. I get no error messages. Is there a way I can stop a download and restart it?

    Hey Steve,
I had this problem as well and found a way how to solve this:
You need to reset your iPhone by pressing the Home button and the Power button simultaneously until the iPhone reboots.
After it rebooted I unlocked the phone, connected it to my PC and ran the iTunes sync without any problems.
Hope this helps with your issue as well.

  • Apps update issue - iTunes Store sign-in/Apple ID

Thanks in advance for your help.  My iPhone 5s is set to automatically update my apps.  This has been working fine.  Today, however there is a problem.  Today the App Store app is prompting me to manually update the apps, and the ID it is asking me for the password for is not mine - it's my wife's.
This is very strange, and I asked myself if I've made any changes to either mine or my wife's iphone settings recently.  I've only made one change, 2 days ago.  The change I made was on my wife's iphone 5s.  She was getting a message about not enough storage on her iCloud to complete a backup.  When I took a look, I saw that there were 2 devices on the account, her new phone ("this iPhone") and the previous phone we wiped and gave away.  So I deleted the old device since it was sucking up all her storage.
At first I didn't see how there could be a connection with my issue, but I've noted one thing which may not be coincidental.  In looking at my app update history, I can see that the last day any apps were auto updated was the same day and prior to I made the change to my wife's phone. Must be a connection?
Can someone help with a diagnosis, recommended next steps, etc?

When an app that is updating is asking for an alternate password or Apple id login, that is due to the fact that the login the app is asking for IS THE Login that was used when the app was first purchased/downloaded.
What one must do in this situation is to logout of your device with your current apple id login and then to log back in with the alternate apple id login . Once login in with the requested apple id you then will be able to update the cantankerous app.
    Good luck!

  • False App Updates on iTunes & App Store

The list of people having this issue is growing on www.howardforums.com http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1503808 .
Going into iTunes on the computer or the App Store on the iPhone shows apps that need to be updated, but already are. If you click "Update All" It says the apps are being updated, but they're really now.

Me too. The number of apps that "need updating" seems to be random. Sometimes none. Sometimes a few. Sometimes a lot. I looked in my Mobile Applications folder and there seems to be a lot of copies of the same App in there. In the past an update would remove the old version to the trash.
I am running the latest OSX, the latest iTunes and the latest iPhone 3G sw.

  • Trouble with App updates in iTunes 10.2.1

Installed iTunes 10.2.1. After clicking on "Check for updates" for Apps, the iTunes Store opens and displays the Apps that have updates. Clicking on an App icon, to view what the update contains, no longer works. Also, clicking on the "Download All Free Updates" button doesn't work any more either. I have to click on each "Free" button, one at a time, to receive the updates.
Any ideas on how to get these functions back? Thanks all.

I was having the same problem and discovered a work-around. Instead of clicking the arrow, try clicking the words, "Download all Free Updates." It looks like the mapping is slightly off for that button.

  • App update in iTunes 11.0.1?

I've downloaded the newer itunes 11.0.1.  There was a short tutorial with the changes and I watched it, which I don't always do ;-)
then I opened itunes and plugged in my iphone to update apps.  With the new itunes, you click on the device in the upper right side of the top itunes bar.  from there, you can choose 'Summary, info, apps, tones, music, etc.....  when I click on apps, it shows all my apps, shows how to move them around and offers me the chance to sync.  But I do not see anywhere to ask for any apps needing updates, so they are applied when I sync.
I read another thread that said to update apps, go to view, choose 'show sidebar' and then we see the old look where we click on our device on the left column and follow the steps we used to do to update, sync, etc.
My question is, if I understand this correctly, in order to update apps on our imac, which is the quickest way to do it when we have several to do, which is how it usually plays out, we have to click to go back to the previous layout for interfacing with itunes.  If so, why would we ever choose the new layout?  I am sure there are users who don't use apps and may not have an iphone, but do use itunes on their mac.  But MANY people do have an iphone so it seems if you are going to update to a new 'layout' for interfacing with itunes, that the more important, often used tools would be available in that design?  So am I missing how we do this in the new layout?
    Thanks for your help.
    Michelle

You are looking in the wrong place. In your library either in the sidebar or if you watched the video the drop down at the top left.
Select Apps and the check for update button is there in the same place as before. Then to choose which Apps to sync to your device, go back to where you were before select install or remove for an App and click Apply at the bottom right.
