App updates on iPhone OK but in iTunes not

Hi there, I updated the Apps on my iPhone 4 today, and they downloaded fine, however when I later went to sync it in iTunes on OS X, I noticed that next to Apps in the left panel there was no number, like there usually is when there are updates available that I have not yet transferred to iTunes.
Before I connected the iPhone I went into the Apps section, and clicked to check for updates, it told me that there were none available, I clicked on 'get info' for one of the apps I knew I had updated this morning, and it had the 'old' date.
On connecting the iPhone, it synced as normal, putting the older versions of the same updated apps into the trash.
Some other forums from a few years ago suggest that it could be caused by multiple iTunes accounts, but I have only ever had one iTunes account, however I did have an iPhone 3G that I replaced with my current iPhone 4, and transferred the apps over - this was last year though.
Some others have suggested that this happens with Apple from time to time, can anyone shed any more light on this?

There are a number of other threads from people reporting a problem with a blank Updates tab in the App Store app - it looks like there is a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.
Some posts are suggesting that you if you go into the Purchased tab in the App Store app you might be able to update the apps from there, though you will need to scroll through the list to find those with updates and individually update them.
