App-V 5.0 SP2 with Mandatory Profiles

Hi,
We are having some issues with App-V 5.0 SP2 with HFX2 and HFX4 on our Windows 7 x64 Clients
We use mandatory profiles and delete the local profile on logoff,
HFX2 Issue:
The AppData\Local\Microsoft\AppV\Client\VFS\<GUID> is only created once, subsequent logins don't have the folder structure created for the package VFS and all folders have read/write access for the user, when they should follow the base OS folder permissions
We have found that a registry entry is created in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Packages\<GUID>\UserConfigEx\<USER-GUID>
if we manually delete this registry key then appv will re-create the VFS folders in local app data
AppV seems to be setting key's saying its created those folders and expects them to be there on the next login, is there a way to tell AppV that we are using mandatory profiles and to re-create the folders?
HFX4 Issue:
Hotfix 4 is a bigger problem in that a registry entry for <USER-GUID> is created in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Virtualzation\LocalVFSSecuredUser
The first time appv is used for that user, it works, all subsequent times appv packages fail to load unless that registry string is manually deleted.
Is there any way to fix App-V 5 to work with mandatory profiles which are deleted on logoff?
Thanks!

Hi Nicke,
The registry key's are located in HKLM, which causes permission problems as our uses are all standard users
the HFX2 issue sort of works, the
UserConfigEx key is created with the logged on user having read/write permissions, so as long as that user successfully runs a logoff script then the key is deleted, if the desktop crashes without running the logoff script and a new user logs in, then they
don't have the rights to delete the sub keys and all future app-v localappdata VFS permissions are broken on that client,
The HFX4 issue registry keys are all write protected from standard users,
I'm not 100% sure these are the only area's which are causing problems (they are just the ones I've found!) and that just deleting the registry entries completely fixes the problem.  I didn't go down the path of deleting HKLM keys as a user as it seemed
a bit of a brute force hack to me which I was trying to avoid :)
If I give users rights to delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Packages subkeys
then I think they could break published applications if the <GUID> folders are somehow deleted?
I was actually pretty surprised to find out that App-V 5.0 stores permanent information about user's in the HKLM hive, I would have thought all of this should live in the HKCU hive!
I've not been able to find any documentation on how App-V uses HKLM keys to keep track of processes its already performed on a user and doesn't want to do again,
Thanks!

  • Can't open secured documents on windows 7 domain client with mandatory profiles.

While opening certain PDF files we have the problem that the user is presented with a message that he does not have the rights permissions. This happens twice, after that the users gets an empty page with the message the Adobe version might not be up to date. We use Acrobat Pro 10, but this also happens while using Reader 11.0.8. On our windows 2008 terminal services machine this could be fixed by giving the user rights on c:\ to create and remove a file. :O. On windows 7 this doesn't work probably because of UAC. But we've tried every solution to that available on the internet, disabling uac, changing uac options, changing rights on userprofile folders, changing rights on c:\ but to no avail. When using process explorer we can see it wants to create a temp file p328hkl.tmp or something like that on C but it can't and immediattely after is shows the error on screen.
Anyone who also has this problem or solved it? There are no problems with simple self made pdf files/scans but only with certain types of pdf files for which it tries to create a tmp file.
    Thanks,
    Peter

    Hi Brogers,
Thanks for your reaction. We do have AppData redirection in place. We redirect AppData to a share on our data server which works perfectly fine for all other applications. The weird thing is that Reader/Acrobat try to write to C:\ which to my knowledge should not happen, is this maybe a fallback because it can’t write to a different location? Users have full control on their own roaming AppData but not on their local AppData that is made by windows itself while copying the mandatory default profile to C:\.
I might use the wrong term while saying secured documents. I’m talking about a document created by Raet/Youforce a web application for personal administration. The documents can be opened by other viewers than Acrobat/Reader but then only contain the background and not the text. In Acrobat/Reader they do open normally when Acrobat/Reader can create the .tmp file. Otherwise it will not display the file at all. I would attach such a document to see but since it contains certain info I am not allowed to do so.
I hope we can work out a solution for this.

  • Disable Active Setup with Mandatory Profile and UEV 2.x??

Hi, I have been doing some research into UEV configuration with the use of mandatory profiles.  I'm wondering if Disabling Active setup is something we should do to increase the logon time?  if so what issues may I run into if I disable? what
is the process for disabling, is it just delete each registry entry or is there a global setting?

Not really an Ue-V question, but here goes..
Active setup is a tricky one.  In order to disable active setups you can find out what triggers the active setup to run or not run and incorporate those settings into your mandatory profile.  i.e.  whatever registry keys the active setup creates
when it runs.  If they are present, this should prevent the active setup from running.  Results can be mixed depending on what the active setup is doing.  Trial and error is required.
Depending on how the mandatory profile is configured, stored, accessed, etc it can greatly reduce login times.  If this is for some kind of RDSH environment without persistent profiles I would recommend avoiding any applications with active setup because
you can run into issues during times whenever everyone is logging in.  i.e. each morning.  There can only be so many msiexec.exe running on each box at any given time, so users get queued up waiting for an opening.  I recommend, if possible,
to repackage the applications that currently have an active setup in such a way that will remove the active setup.  If that isn't possible, stuffing the whatever information active setup writes into the mandatory profile may work.  Good luck.

  • Windows 8.1 update 1 - users with domain mandatory profiles cannot open windows 8.1 Store

    Hi,
After the update 1 on windows 8.1.  All of our domain users get "you cannot access the windows store because you're signed in to this pc using a temporary or guest account......" while opening windows 8.1 store.  All my users use mandatory
profiles.  Could some one guide me onto:
-how and what changes should I make on my base image of 8.1?
-how/where what changes should I make on the domain in Group policy to make my profiles work?
-I also run sccm 2012 R2 if that makes the things easier I can use it for deploying store apps, but I prefer to make a base windows 8.1 image throw all required apps on it.  I would like to make sure that my domain user can open up windows store after
that I can capture this image and deploy.
                                  Need help thanks
Note: Before this update 1 of windows 8.1 things worked great.

    Thanks Kate Li,
Domain profile is not corrupt.  I have checked the registry settings.  In my question I am mentioning that I am using mandatory profiles for domain users.  Need help.
I am on update 2 now and the same error for domain users with mandatory profiles.
Also error 1001 is generated every time the user tries to open the store(the user with mandatory profile)

  • Mandatory Profiles, Group Policy Preferences, Synchronous processing

    Hello,
I'm using Windows 8.1 Update to setup a lab of computers that will use standard user accounts with Mandatory Profiles and Group Policy to lock them down. Everything is working great with the exception of Group Policy Preferences. I am using GPP printers
to add a shared printer to the computer lab and set the default. Due to asynchronous processing, the GPPs are applied only every other time. Since they are mandatory profiles, the settings are wiped out every time.
I have enabled the GPO setting "Always wait for network at startup and logon" but it doesn't seem to have any effect. The Mandatory Profile is assigned in the user's AD object.
From everything I can find on the issue, the problem seems to stem from the synchronous processing/asynchronous processing of group policy preferences, which explains the consistent alternating working. Fast logon optimization is always off when using a
roaming user profile, which is the case of these standard users, to my understanding. I also configured cached logons to '0', disabling cached logons. The computers (configured to automatically sign in with SysInternals' Autologon) received an error (no logon
servers available) trying to sign in before the network was ready, showing that they are ignoring the setting. Even with waiting for the network and signing in manually, the GPP printers are only successfully added every other time.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj573586.aspx
    2008R2 functional level
I have created and recreated GPOs to test creating them on the DC and a Windows 8.1 Update computer, with no change in outcome.
I have also tried setting Startup policy processing wait time, run logon scripts synchronously, and GPP Printers processing behaviors. For the latest testing, I created a new OU with blocked inheritance and created a new GPO with just the key settings to
wait for network, install the printers, and use the mandatory profile. It still only worked every other time.
I am currently at a loss for a good way to add the printers to the mandatory profiles. I have hacked them into the HKCU of the mandatory profile but I feel that is a kludge solution and not very sustainable. I have tried a logon PowerShell script but had
    no luck.
TL;DR: Win8.1Update, Mandatory Profiles, standard user: Every other restart, GPP Printers are added perfectly and the desired outcome is reached. Every other, other restart the printers are not added.

    Hi,

  • App-V 5.0 SP2 RDS Client with hotfix 2 breaks frequently on Windows 2012R2 with User Profile Disks enabled

    Hi All,
I am at my wit's end trying to troubleshoot this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
We are having serious stability issues with App-V 5.0 SP2 RDS in our environment with User Profile Disks enabled.
We have applied the latest hotfix but the issues persist.
    The main problems are:
    1. Periodically the client seems to become corrupted and all applications stop working for all users. All applications including the official Microsoft Office 2013 ones - not just our packages.
The symptoms are the same as if I change the App-V Client Service account to run under a user account instead of SYSTEM, so it suggests a file access issue. The log files also hint at this, and one of there errors is similar to this:
The virtual application 'C:\Users\rds.user9\AppData\Local\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Integration\A3EF9C01-C0E9-4AC5-B21F-DB9B1D2F700C\Root\Mindjet\MindManager 14\MindManager.exe' could not be started because the
    App-V Subsystem 'Virtual Filesystem' could not be initialized. {error: 0x6740090A-0x20003}
Once this problem occurs the only way I have found to fix it is to either completely remove and reinstall the client, or (perhaps this is the big clue) rename the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Volumes , unpublish
an application, then republish said application.
I don't even think it matters which application gets published. The point seems to be that this 'Volumes' key gets rewritten.
I am highly suspicious that our issues are caused by User Profile disks in our RDS environment, as when I disable them on our staging collection all of these issues seem to disappear.
I have made sure all of the servers have permissions on the share (folder and share permissions). It doesn't seem to make a difference.
    2.  Some application fail completely with User Profile Disks enabled. If we switch the setting from "Store all settings and data on the user profile disk" to "Store Only the following folders" there seems to be some improvement,
in that at least one application that fails on the other setting starts to work.
    3. We have already set that NTFS 8 dot 3 reg fix some time ago.
    SOS!
We have gone live this week (not my call) and this is having disasterous consequences. :(
    Thanks in advance,
    John

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
I did try this a while ago without success, although it may be worth revisiting with SP2 applied.
I have left this client now.
I left them a Powershell script that deletes HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Volumes
and triggers an Unpublish/Publish of an application we have deployed to all of the servers.
This seems to work, but a fix would be better than a workaround.
Not really my problem now though - I did my best.
    Thanks,
    John

  • Local Mandatory Profile breaks Metro Apps

I'm not sure whether this is the right section of the forum; tell me if i'm wrong. Also I apologize for my English, I'm Italian.
I want to setup one PC with a "self-resetting" user profile so that every time the user logs out everything he's done is deleted. In Windows XP I used Windows Steady State to achieve something similar.
I tried with software like Reboot Restore RX (freeware alternative to Deep Freeze), but they're not what i need (they reset all changes to the Hard Drive, which means that antiviruses and Windows itself cannot save upgrades).
I followed an howto in order to setup a Mandatory Profile on Win 8.1, because that seemed exactly what I need. My steps:
    1. Create a standard user TEST. Log in that user and log out
    2. Go to "Advanced System Properties" -> "User Profiles" and copy "default profile" to
C:\Users\MandatoryTEST.V2 allowing "\Everyone" to access it (with "Copy to" button)
    3. Open "lusrmgr.msc" and assign C:\Users\MandatoryTEST
as Profile Path for user TEST
    4. Log in TEST and start customizing things. Up to this point, everything works. Settings and files are preserved between logins, as expected
    5. Rename the file NTUSER.DAT to
NTUSER.MAN in C:\Users\MandatoryTEST.V2 directory. This should "freeze" the profile
Those steps works well until i log into TEST
the second time after "mandatorizing" the profile. Default Metro apps like Weather and News suddenly disappear, and i can't access either Store nor Settings (they crash at launch). Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe there's a better way
    to accomplish what I want?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Hi,
In my opinion, whether temp file could use Store APP depends on Default Profile. However, default profile doesn't contains Store APP, such as, weather, finace, Bing Map, etc. If you want to use these Store App, you need to customize the default profile firstly,
make sure these app componments cotained in Default Profile.
To customize Default Profile, you can refer to the contents of the link below for more details:

  • App-V 5.0 SP2 user applications published via SCCM 2012 to VDI workstations with roaming only

    Hi,
The environment consists of App-V 5.0 SP2 (KB2956985) user based applications published via SCCM 2012 to Windows 7 VDI snapshotted workstations that are reset at user logoff.
When a user logs on the SCCM 2012 client initiates App-V client package publishing.  After a couple of minutes after logon the shortcuts appear and the user can launch their applications.
The issue is that at logoff, even with roaming enabled, the publishing information disappears.  This causes the next logon process for that user to repeat, the applications are not available until the SCCM client has completed it's publishing cycle.
Roaming profiles are implemented. %APPDATA% is redirected to a UNC path.  The following registry key is set
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Integration\PreserveUserIntegrationsOnLogin=1
U-EV, global publishing of applications, and AppLocker rules are not an option.  Also, I have read this already - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn659478.aspx#BKMK_PE
I do not want to wait for the SCCM client to kick in prior to the user applications being available.  What do I need to roam or run to create a seamless transition for the user between sessions?
    Eddie.

Hi Tywin (bad username considering the last GoT Episode ;))
If you ask Microsoft, they always recommend using SCCM for deploying App-V packages and reuse your current SCCM infrastructure if that is already in place. Problem is, as you now experience, is that there is some big caveats both in regards to publishing
time and to roaming of settings.
As Nické states I would suggest looking into the Full Infrastructure Model for App-V 5.x, which gives you much better performance in what I call "from no apps" to "being able to click the shortcut" - the add and publishing phase. If you don't have the time/budget/whatever
to start looking into that, you could look into some community tools like App-V Scheduler which is developed specific by Citrix guys to ease the publishing and management in a Citrix world.
Microsoft have a great article about Performance Guidelines, which you have read, but it mostly presumes you work with Full Infrastructure. Have you looked into Steve Thomas' session from TechEd NA? It talks about "implementation trends".

If you had Firefox save your Yahoo password, first try deleting that here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Security > "Saved Passwords"
The "signed out" message seems to be related to how Yahoo authenticates you. Some users have reported that disabling automatic proxy detection solves the problem, and it also resolves an issue of getting logged out every few minutes, if you have ever experienced that.
    To make the change:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the "Network" mini-tab, click the "Settings" button, then choose "No Proxy" and OK your way back out.
If your work connection requires you to use a proxy server, try the "Use system settings" option instead.
    Does that help?

  • CS5 issues with mandatory roaming profiles

    Hi,
I have seen lots of problems reported with using CS5 on networks with mandatory roaming profiles but not found any answers yet?
Has anyone managed to get it working yet?
We have gone to using standard network default profiles but it is not where we really want to be.
    Regards
    Darren

Dreamweaver is designed to work in a multi-user environment, and it creates a configuration folder for each user in that person's application data folder or library. You need to contact Adobe technical support if you need a different setup.

  • App-v 5.0 SP2 Client UI Virtual Application not launching

    Hi there,
Currently we're upgrading to APP-V 5.0 SP2 (HF5). I downloaded the official APP-V Client UI from the Microsoft site. The Hotfix and App-V 5.0 SP2 installed succesfully, I even got Office 2013 to work with the new App-V Client.
The problem I have is that the APP-V Client UI is published to a user and when I launch the application the Process is started, I can see that in the taskmanager but there doesn't appear a user interface. It only worked once for me.
I've tried this on a few different machines, also removed user profile (local and network), but still the appvclientux process is starting but no UI is showing.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this "bug".
    Thanks!

Yes we have the latest roll-out of silverlight installed (locally).
I can't find the pre-req for Silverlight though:

  • AppV 5 slow to refresh with roaming profile (no redirects) but fast with local profile

    Hi,
I have an issue I can't get thought out. I have an AppV5 SP3 full infra, with SMB share and local caching of packages enabled. Everything works from a functional level. However I have an issue where users with a roaming profile get a very slow AppV refresh
    during login.
I created a few testaccounts, a few with local profile and a few with roaming profiles. For these testusers there are NO folder redirects. The only difference between them is local profile or roaming profile.
When I login with a local-profile user initially, the AppV client rather slowly refreshes the applications and shortcuts. It generates quite some CPU load on the RDS host, but as soon as the shortcuts are placed everything is fine. When I log that user off,
and log in again, the shortcuts are there immediately and I can immediately start the applications (Office 2010 for example). Blazing fast. Also when logging in, the refresh-UI is there for about half a second, it really flashes and it's done.
Then with a testuser with roaming profile, the initial refresh is about the same. But when I logoff that user and login again, it's all very slow. The shortcuts are there but blank initially, it takes about 5-10 seconds to get the correct icon. It takes
much longer before the refresh actually starts (sometimes up to 30 seconds after login), and it takes 5-10 seconds to do the refresh, with 100% cpu load on the thread AppVclient.exe is running on. Also right after loging in when the shortcuts are blank they
don't work until they get the proper icon. WHen everything is refreshed it works all fine though. It's just painfully slow at start.
I don't understand this. I can reproduce this every single time. Without folder redirects I don't see the difference between roaming and local profile from AppV perspective, as the roaming profile is of course copied to the server and in that sense the server
just works with a local copy anyway.
Anyone encountered this, and how to troubleshoot, or better fix this?

So is the fact that there is a 5-10 second delay during refresh actually an issue? What I mean by that is - are any users comparing the local profiles with roaming profiles experience, or complaining that the delay is there?
Roaming profiles and Folder redirection are of course very simple to configure; however for the best user experience I recommend managing profiles with a real profile management solution.
If you have MDOP, then you'll also have access to UE-V. You've mentioned your environment is RDS, which sadly doesn't get UE-V, even though you have App-V.

  • APP-V 5.0 SP2 Hotfix 4 - Java plugin the non run virtual approach

    Morning All
I am currently investigating an issue with APP-V 5.0 SP2 and our internet explorer plugins, until recently we were running our internet explorer plugins via the run virtual key on our windows 7 X64 environment, however when running the run virtual we
did notice a side effect of this when trying to open office documents, where a document would take anywhere between 60-300 seconds to open with the run virtual key in place, once removed documents would open between 1-5 seconds.
    Current Environment
    Windows 7 X64
    APP-V 5.0 SP2 Hotfix 5
Microsoft Office 2003 Standard and Professional: APP-V
Microsoft Office 2007 Standard and Professional: APP-V

    Hello,
    Old issue with the App-V 4.6 client is described here;

Perhaps some of that knowledge can be applied ?
