Hello,
First question then is;
What happens, when reviewing the activity with Process Monitor, when the shortcut is removed when it "works"?
What happens, when reviewing the activity with Process Monitor, when the shortcut is removed when it "doesn't work"?

  • Folder redirection (Desktop) not working sometimes

I'm having an issue where sometimes desktop redirection is not working properly.
We have AD set to point the profile path to a local mandatory profile, with GP redirection set for several items, including desktop. However, about half the time when the user logs in, the desktop showing is from their local profile (C:\Users\[username]\desktop).
By logging out and back in a couple times it will finally load the desktop from the redirected location on the network, and the correct icons will show on the desktop, but it will ultimately not work again on the next logon.
Tried GPUPDATE, didn't fix the problem. It doesn't appear to be a rights issue, as I can successfully connect to the redirected desktop folder from within the user's account. What I don't understand is why it is ever loading the user's local profile desktop,
when it is supposed to load the mandatory one.
    Any ideas are appreciated!

    Figured it out.
The OU the computer was in didn't have the computer GPO linked. One of the computer GPO settings was to delete the locally cached profile of the user upon logout. Since this wasn't being done, Windows was loading the locally cached profile rather than the
mandatory profile. This also was apparently causing the local account desktop to show rather than the redirected desktop. I'm assuming it was irregular depending on which profile was showing most recent modified.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows 7 folder redirection not working

    Hi,
I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 environment and I'm trying to get folder redirection working on Windows 7 clients. I've configured the group policy on the DC and it's suppose to redirect the user desktop to a folder sitting on another server.
What I've discovered is that any files in that folder aren't being copied down and they aren't visible to the user. I can connect to the folder via its UNC path and when I run a gpresult the GPO is showing that it's applying.
Am I missing something? Shouldn't the files be copied down since I've redirected the desktop? Here are the settings I've used:
    Share Permissions
    Local Administrators: Owner
    Domain Admins: Read/write
    Everyone: Read
    NTFS
Local Administrators: Full Control on This Folder, subfolders and files.
    SYSTEM: Same as above.
    Domain admin: Same as above.
Everyone: Traverse folder, execute file, list folder, read data, read attributes and read extended attributes to This Folder only.
    GPO Settings:
Under User Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Folder Redirection -> Desktop
Setting is Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location.
Target folder location - Redirect to the following location
    Root path: FQDN\Shared folder name
GPO is linked to the OU I want to test with and there is a user account in it.
    Any tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Cannot get Folder Redirect to work on RDS Server

OK here is what I am trying to do..
Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services
I want to redirect all user profile folders (Desktop, Music, etc...) to a remote share
\\server\share  to which the share is actually only giving Read-Only rights.  Except for Documents to which they can save there on the RDS Server itself.
I had a server drives hidden (A:, B:, C:, D:) hidden so they could only save to network shares and their local computers.  However, the people in the UK complain that saving to their local computers is just painfully slow  (the RDS Server is in
    the US).
So, Now I'm only blocking the Server C: drive.  I have a SUBST going on pointing B: to the user profile folders (needed for a different application anyway).  I need to have the "B:\Documents" open for these guys to save to however, I
want to block saving to any of the other profile folders.
What I tried to do was to set a GPO up like below:
    Computer\Admin Templates\RDS\Session Host\Profiles
Set path for RDS Roaming User Profile Enabled (pointing to
    \\Server\Share)
    User\Windows Settings\Folder Redirection\Desktop
Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location)
    Path \\Server\Share
Grant Exclusive rights to Desktop - Disabled
Move contents to the new location - Disabled
Apply to older systems - Disabled
First, is what I am trying to do even workable?
Next why can't I get it working.

    Hi,
    >>I want to redirect all user profile folders (Desktop, Music, etc...) to a remote share
\\server\share  to which the share is actually only giving Read-Only rights.
To redirect user’s folders to a network share, the minimum NTFS permissions of the root folder required by the users is
List Folder/Read Data, Create Folders/Append Data - This Folder Only.
Regarding security recommendations for Folder Redirection, the following article can be referred to for more information.
    Security Recommendations for Folder Redirection
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc736916(v=ws.10).aspx
    >>Move contents to the new location - Disabled
For disabling this setting, the existing data in the folders will not automatically follow the folders when they are redirected to the network location.
    >>I need to have the "B:\Documents" open for these guys to save to however, I want to block saving to any of the other profile folders.
After redirecting the folders, if we really want to do this, as an administrator, we can take ownership of the user folders to where user’s profile folders are redirected,
and then edit the corresponding NTFS permissions.

    1. I updated app-v 5.0 sp3 environment on 2012 R2. Roaming profile users with folder redirection logon fine at first time applications icons available but at 2nd logon applicaitons icons are missed while packages are available. we are using existing
roaming profiles with folder redirection which are running in current environment through APP-V 4.6 2008 R2. Please suggest work around to resolve this issue.
    2. TS Nodes of 2008 R2 with App-v 4.6 running fine on Microsoft 2012 private cloud but we are facing performance issue (stuck, slow logon, slow performance etc) when we are moving in new 2012 R2 private cloud. SAP, SCSM and other sevices are running
    fine, please provide solution.
    Thanks

1.) What are you doing with the App-V Icon path? e.g. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Integration\<GUID>\Root\AppVClientUX.exe.0.ico ?
I guess you could workaround it with deploying the icons to a central location and then pointing to the icon out on a central share. Or put the icons in a machine location...I haven't had this issue but that's just off the top of my head.
2.) I have not used App-V 4.6 in an environment like yours BUT would pre-caching the applications be possible? Any chance you'll be moving those apps into App-V 5.0 soon?

  • Desktop Folder Redirection slow access

Ok, I've scoured the network for weeks now trying to resolve this.
Using Windows 7 fully patched, and file servers are 2012 R2
We have folder redirection in place for Documents and Desktop.
The folders are redirected to one of their mapped drives.  When accessing the mapped drive, the drive hangs whilst the green progress bar occurs when trying to display the desktop folder.  Once accessed, this can be ok for further accesses but
then may recur again later.  It is only the desktop folder.  Documents is fine.  I've tried customising the folder for item type, removed the icon cache, indexed the server, recreated local profiles, moved information off and deleted the folder
on server to allow to recreate etc etc.  The issues as I say is intermittent but extremely frustrating.
The group policies originally redirected to a mapped drive when the home directory was set up in AD.  However, we've moved away from that, and now the group policies use unc for the redirected folders.  All permissions on the server are set up
correctly according to the MS kbs.  Some people don't appear to have the issue.
The desktop in favorites in Windows Explorer appears to respond fine even when the mapped drive doesn't.  Occasionally the mapped drive is fine, and in this case the Desktop in Favorites isn't.
I've checked the registry, all values in Shell Folders and User Shell Folders are set up correctly.
I've reached the end of what could be wrong, and have no idea what is causing this issue.  Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Files won't delete from desktop with folder redirection

I have folder direction set up with a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard x64 Primary Domain Controller and a 2012R2Stdx64 File and Print Server that is the backup domain controller. 1 single user out of 20 can't delete files from his desktop.
Folder redirection is configured via GPO and offline files are enabled.
When you go to delete a file it says "Item Not Found" "This is no longer located in \\HSI-FPS01\Users\My Documents\Desktop Verify the item's location and try again."
However, the item still persists in showing, both in the server folder and the desktop however you can't open it.
There are no sync errors, I've done re-syncs. I've also rebooted, refreshed the desktop, etc.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.

  • ICloud can't sign in on Domain desktop with Folder Redirection

I've been struggling with this issue since the day that the version of iCloud came out for Windows; I just upgraded to iCloud 4.0 and no improvement.
I am trying to use iCloud on my Windows 7 Professional 64bit domain joined desktop.  Unfortunately the control panel login screen pinwheel keeps spinning and never succeeds.   Months of researching on the Internet suggests that the cause is the GPO settings for folder redirection (see below), specifically Application Data (see below); i have confirmed it.  I have tried a new account on the same computer that does not have this policy applied and was successful logging in.
Does anyone know of a workaround for this?  I can't seem to get Apple's attention.

I am having a simlar problem with my iphone6. It refuses to recognise skype name or password. I can log in fine on my desktop but not on my phone. I have tired several password changes and still it will not work on my iphone6. Any ideas?

  • Can I direct all users in one OU to share a common desktop/my document? (Folder Redirection)

Say we have a few OU's, each OU will only have 1 active user at any given time. Lets call it OU: A,B,C,D. When a person leaves, I want the new user to be able to access all of the same desktop/documents of the previous user. I don't want to have to come
in and copy the desktop/my documents folder each time for this.
Say if  User in OU "A" leaves and there's a temp/replacement, can I just copy the existing user's profile and create a new one in OU A and have the new user be able to log in with their new account but have all the desktops and my documents
of the previous user. Of course if this can be achieved, even when the machine gets replaced, the desktops/my documents are there.
At the moment, we have shared folder for those groups of people but we're not enforcing them to save to the mapped drive. Lots of them have no idea what a mapped drive is. :( I want to simplify this process and get away with spending hours of backing up/restoring
people's my documents and desktops when they come and go.

    Hi,
I don't think we can set multiple users to a same redirected folder.
Under Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location, there is only one option seems close to your purpose which is "Redirect to the following location". However to get it work, the user need to be the owner of the target folder, and it will not
work even we set Everyone as the Owner.
Meanwhile I do not understand why you would like to share a redirected Desktop with all users. If you would like to share files or folders, you can map a folder for all users. If you would like to publish applications to all users, you can deploy application
    through Group Policy.
If you have any feedback on our support, please send to [email protected]
Yes you can and I confirm this works. The key is to uncheck
    "grant user exclusive rights"
here's an example of what I did.
    Created OU A and B
    OU A - Added user A1 and A2
    OU B - Added user B1 and B2
Created Security Groups A and B
Share folders \\PDC1\A\Desktop and \\PDC1\A\Documents grant permission to security group A (repeat for group B)
Use basic folder redirect and the option to redirect everyone to the same shared drives as above. In the setting tab, uncheck "Grant user exclusive rights"
And to answer your question, we do you mapped folders. Each user have their own mapped drives but no one is using it. They don't even know what mapped drives are in most
cases. They tend to like to save everything to their desktops or their whatever the default saved location is, in this case it's "Documents". There are plenty other reasons why I want this.

  • Folder redirection doesn't work in DOS and other apps

We are redirecting my documents and some other locations.
If I open a dos window and cd c:\users\username\documents it does to a local directory not the redirected location. I can browse that same path in explorer. it seems to only be when I use the library and shortcuts in a "open" dialog that I see the folder redirection location.
A new application we are using saves the config file to "my docs\application\session"
I've saved the config file to the redirect my docs\application\session, but the application doesn't pull up with the config. I'm guessing its not using the correct environment variable to look for the config file. What is the correct environment variable that would recognize redirected folders?
    thanks,jb

I'm having the same problem. It just started yesterday. My top row buttons were not working in SMS and Loopt. I did a reset. I did a restore. I removed all applications and restored to original factory settings and did not put my backed up information back on- still he same issue. The "messages" and "clear" buttons do not respond in SMS, but the screen responds in that location in all other applications and on the home screen. It definitely seems to be a software issue and not the screen itself.

  • Special Folder Redirection like in Citrix

We currently run a number of published applications on a Citrix server farm. On of the client options on Citrix is called "Special Folder Redirection, Use My Documents and Desktop folders".
When this is enabled, a user who is using a Citrix app and tries to Open/Save a file, the save or open dialog (or Windows Explorer) shows the My Document or Desktop folders that exist on the local (client) PC. This is completely transparent to the user.
This makes it easy for users in a Citrix published app to use their local files without having to navigate to Client (C:) \users\Theirname\Desktop.
I'm evaluating using RemoteApp under Server 2012 R2 as a possible replacement for Citrix. Is it possible to emulate this feature?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
As I understand your question, you want to place the RemoteApp file on your client local desktop instead of searching the other long way. If misunderstand please clarify. If you want the way which I told, then seems no need to do any special task, just can
open the RD Web URL on local computer, access with username and password and after that check the related RemoteApp. Once you find the RemoteApp we can download the rdp file of that RemoteApp on local system desktop. You can check below snap for detail.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Folder redirection to a new location is not working

Currently in SCM we have all Windows 8 users Documents and Desktop redirected to a users home folder in a Netapp share.  We are planning on moving them to a Windows File Server.  As a test I moved my home folder in AD to the new share.  But
SCM is still redirecting my Documents and Desktop to the old share.  I also tried excluding my user account from the user collection used for Folder Redirection.  Created a user collection and configuration item just for my account and SCM is still
trying to redirect to the old share.
    Help please
    Thanks

I have created a user collection with my id as a test user and also under user data and user profiles I created a user data and profiles configuration item under Folder redirection.   For Desktop and documents I selected REdirect to remote and for configure
folder redirection path I checked Redirect to the users home folder .  In Active Directory I made the new Windows Server share my home directory.

  • Microsoft-Windows-Folder Redirection Error 502. CSC database locked by another user

    Dear all,
We are finalizing our Windows 7 migration where we migrated 500+ clients. In our enterprise concept we implemented RUP (Roaming User Profiles) and Redirected Folders for all
users. The Redirected Folders have been by enabled by a single GPO which redirects all folders from
    AppData to
    Searches \\servername.domain.name\documents$\%username%.
    Problem:
The RUP and Redirected folders solution works fine until a new user wants to logon. This new user has been migrated to RUP and Redirected on another system and
he just wants to work on another workplace or gets a temporary pc. What happens is that redirected folders do not work. The user gets a message that the folder is not reachable and desktop is empty.
    Troubleshooting:
Soon I found out that something was being locked. If we used a user account which had working Redirect Folders than this
worked for that user. An event of 10 was logged in OfflineFiles area of EventViewer to reconnect the path which was configured in the GPO.
This is example screenshot. It says "Error on Open Folder. \\server.domain.name\documents$\%username%\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard disk
on this computer, or a on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location."
These symptoms happen randomly and not on all workstations. The pain here is when it happens on a portable computer. For desktop we disabled the "Disable Offline Files' in "Manage
Offline Files" control panel and then reboot. After the reboot the folders are directed
and it works without these errors... On portable computer we can't use this work around as they need to work offline.
If I connect to the share without the FQDN like \\servername\documents$\%username%\Desktop than this works fine and user can access all folders. When I try the FQDN path which is
configured in the GPO to redirect user to like \\servername.domain.name\documents$\%username%\Desktop than it fails with this message. I personally think because the C:\Windows\CSC database is locked by the previous user who has been logged on this system.

I have tried all different option even to rebuild the CSC database but this also was not helping. I hope we are not dealing with a bug.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Best regards, Ivan Versluis http://www.networknet.nl

Ivan and SteveDIG - Thanks for taking the time to post detailed information about what you have found.  I have found the same things over the past few months and have been working with Microsoft to resolve this.  Like Ivan, I have been told by
MS that this is a design problem in Windows 7, but they did admit it is a bug and did not charge me for the case.  That was the good news.  The bad news was that the problem is so 'deep' in Windows 7 that it will not be fixed until Windows 8 and
the CSC engineering team in Redmond has rejected several requests to fix this issue in Windows 7 from several customers.  I personally feel we should have hauled our TAM in over this, but that wasn't my call so we haven't attempted to get an attitude
    change from MS.
<RANT> I find this completely outrageous.  Windows is supposed to be a multi-user operating system suitable for deployment to mobile workforces spread around the world and often using slow VPN links.  Offline folders, folder redirection,
slow link detection, etc. are all great on paper and as I did the design work for the W7 solution I've just built I sold these advantages heavily.  I now have serious egg on my face and am not happy.  Like others here I missed this in testing as
multiple users are a fringe for us, but still important, I unfortunately didn't think to specifically test for multiple users, though I tested the features thoroughly and was happy with the results when used on single user machines.</RANT>
As identified above, this issue manifests when more than one user uses a machine and their Offline folders (all redirected folders are configured this way by default) are in an offline state when the first user logs off.  The second user cannot access
this 'offline' share so folder redirection fails.  We get burnt as we have latency=0 configured for slow link detection with Offline folders so users always work offline.  This is partly because of WAN optimisers in the network that lie to Windows
so the online/offline transition doesn't work on slow links (not MS's fault), and partly because it made sense for other reasons.
The workaround Microsoft and I came up with for our environment was to use individual file shares for each user.  We had been using a common file share with each user folder under that file share.  Changing to an individual share for each users
means the share is not locked by the previous user.
    Examples
This would cause a problem if John then Emma logged on to the same machine. Folder redirection would fail for Emma:
    \\FileServer1\Users$\john
    \\FileServer1\Users$\emma
So would this if DFS was used
    \\my.domain\users\john            (points to \\FileServer1\Users$\John)
    \\my.domain\users\emma          (points to \\FileServer1\Users$\Emma)
    This would fix the problem:
    \\FileServer1\John$
    \\FileServer1\Emma$
Unfortunately we then figured we could move these shares behind DFS like so:
    \\my.domain\homes\john             (points to \\FileServer1\John$)
    \\my.domain\homes\emma          (points to \\FileServer1\emma$)
This was wrong.  The problem returned.  I assume the share that is being locked is now the DFS root and not the user share.
The operations team here is very reluctant to go with direct access to the file servers and not use DFS as that will create issues for them in the future when they need to make file server changes.  I sympathise with them but can't see an alternative
at the moment as we are deploying W7 and can't stop.  If I'd picked this up earlier a third party product might have been the solution (MS actually suggested this when I opened my case).
I hope the information about individual shares above is helpful to someone.  Otherwise I don't really have more to add but I needed the rant :-)
<RANT>BTW.  Has anyone tested changing a user’s home directory path once it is cached?  Try it. Test a scenario where you move the user from one file server to another.  You will not enjoy the results.  I'll say no more
than this as it is off topic, but it shows the lack of investment in the CSC feature in Windows.  Very disappointing</RANT>
