  • HP Touch Pad freezing and will not restart nor shut down.

My HP Touch Pad will not reboot nor shut off. I have a "hp" logo on the screen that will not go away. I have tried all of the 5 Ts with no sucess. I tried downloading webOS Doctor several times but when it went to connect my device I got an error message that stated " Connect your device directly to your computer with your usb cable."  The screen below has "Help" and "Next". Next is greyed out. I inserted the usb cable into different ports on my computer and made sure that they were listed under my computer tab. I was unable to get the "Next" button to be useable.  Any ideas about how I can make this connect to the touchpad? or even how I can get it to unfreeze. Appreciate any help.

Just to be sure you've followed the directions fully, here is my "Doctor How To" file:
How to Doctor an HP TouchPad (reflash the ROM)
On your Touchpad be sure to have:
USB cable. The battery is charged to at least 30%.
    Computer:
Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista Available USB port (not a hub or secondary port). Java 1.5 or later is installed. If you are not sure about what version of Java you have, or even if Java is installed, go to www.java.com and click the Do I have Java? link to install the latest version of Java. 210MB of storage space. Internet connection.
    Miscellaneous Info:
The update process will take approximately 15 minutes. During this process, your device will not be available for use.
    Downloading webOS Doctor
Download webOS Doctor on your desktop computer. If you have a webOS profile, get it from http://ws.hpwebos.com/webosdoctor/sorry.htm
If not, check the webOS Internals page: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Webos_Doctor_Versions
Get your TouchPad ready to update
Hold the Power Button for several seconds until a menu appears. Tap Shut Down to completely power down your device.
    Running webOS Doctor
Double-click the file that was downloaded to run webOS Doctor. Follow the on screen directions up until you are asked to connect your device. Select the language you selected on your device, and click Next. Confirm your language choice. Click Accept to accept the terms of use. Click Next. webOS Doctor checks your system. BE PATIENT! I've seen this part take a few minutes to complete. After webOS Doctor finishes checking your system, you will be asked to connect your device.
Connecting your device and finishing the webOS Doctor update
Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable. You must connect your device directly to your computer, not through a USB hub or other intermediate device. Now the tricky part. Hold the Volume Up button on the device and insert the USB cable. After the large USB symbol appears on screen, let go of the Volume Up button. If you see the HP logo instead of the large USB symbol, you may have let go of the Volume Up button prematurely. If this occurred , wait until your device boots up, shut down your device and then repeat step 2. Windows will find your device and may offer to install two different drivers. When asked to install drivers of OMAP, select No, not at this time. When asked to install drivers for Palm Novacom (bootie), select Yes and let the drivers install. This may take a while. Once the drivers have been installed, the Next button will become available in webOS Doctor. Click Next. Do not disconnect your device from the computer during the update process. When the Reset Complete screen appears, click Done. Wait a few minutes for your device to reset. You're done!

  • IMac G5 Leopard - Apps will not quit or force quit

I upgraded my son's iMac G5 to Leopard. Almost immediately there were problems using app that access the internet - Safari, iTunes Store, and World of Warcraft. The problem is that when I or my son tries to quit the application, it refuses to quit, and will not force quit either. Then, the application will not relaunch until the iMac is shut down - usually this requires pressing and holding the power button, as the system just hangs up.

You might have been okay with an Archive and Install ...
I don't think anyone should do an upgrade install on a major update unless they absolutely have to ..
If you have done an Archive and Install and things still aren't working right ... before you resort to a Erase and Install I recommend trying this ...
    Leopard Update Problems?
    Repair Your Disk ...
Quit all open applications. Put your install 1 DVD disk in the optical drive. Go to System Preferences/ Startup Disk and choose the install DVD disk to restart from and then restart. When the Welcome screen appears after choosing your language ... don't go any further. Go to the top of the screen and you will see "Utilities" as one of the menu items. In utilities choose disk utility. On the left side of the window choose the top icon of a hard drive on the list. To the right pick "First Aid" and go directly to "repair disk". Don't bother verifying. After the disk is repaired ... go up to the top left of the screen and under Disk Utility choose "Quit". Then go under Mac OS X Installer and quit. Then choose Startup Disk in the window that appears ... choose your hard drive icon of your computer and restart. Eject the DVD with the key just under the power button ... or click on the DVD icon and go up to File/ Eject ....
Next ... Download this App ... Maintenance
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16790/maintenance
When it asks you to verify the disk press cancel ... because you've already done it ..
Go to Preferences/Behaviour and check "For all accounts"
Then check all the boxes in Maintenance and Caches and the "Launch Services" in Rebuild .... Then execute
    Restart ...
Remember ... Before any system or security update ..
    1. Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse
    2. Make sure sleep and screensaver are disabled ....
    3. Quit all other apps ..
Also ... when 10.5.2 comes out .... I would Install the Combo Update ... not the standalone installer
They are less prone to conflicts ...
    You'll find it at Apple/Downloads
    Happy Computing!

  • Firefox is frozen, will not open, and will not let me shut down iMac.

A couple of days ago, I installed Evernote. That made it so that my iMac would never shut down or go to sleep or restart because Evernote wanted to remain running all the time. Now Firefox has stopped responding. I cannot open Firefox, nor can I close it, nor can I shut down, restart, or log off of my iMac. I guess this might be related to Evernote, but I cannot find a way to uninstall Evernote. I do not know how to go into Safe Mode on the iMac. Two months ago, I upgraded the software to Mavericks and have had problems ever since. The only browser now working is Safari. I read that I should uninstall and reinstall Firefox, but do not see how, because I cannot open Firefox to get to Help on the Firefox toolbar. I see only the Safari toolbar. I cannot open Help and see Troubleshooting Information because I am not in Firefox, I am in Safari.

    Hi,<br>
It sounds like you have several programs that are stuck (not responding). Here are Apple's instructions for "force quitting" applications that are not responding - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3411
If you still can't shutdown your computer after trying that, you can press and hold the power button for several seconds and the computer will shut off.
It's likely that once you can shut the computer down and then restart it, that Evernote and Firefox and other programs will behave normally.

  • App will not quit

how do i get the app to quit it wont leave the dock and has the little light under it

    It's in your Utilities folder - /Applications/Utilities/.
Dropbox probably has a component installed in the background. You have to kill that background process before you can delete the application. See this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Also, to fully uninstall the application you may need to hunt for all its components that may be outside of the Applications folder:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Mt Lion started running the last App that i quit at shut down.

Just these last couple of days osx 10.8.5 started running the last app that i quit and then shut dowm when i Start up and log in the next day. It has never done this before. I have Checked all the appropriate boxes in the system prefernces->General, I have unchecked the box that asks if you want to do this when you shut dowm. My only log in app is drop box. Anybody else have this "goast" start up happening. Again as i said it had just started these last couple of days.

Well it has been about 6 hours since the message stopped happening. I never tried disconnecting the keyboard, it  just went away on its own. Mayble the shutdown messages were  a fluke and the OS just fixed things on its own, I don't don't know. I am waiting to see if the message starts reoccuring. If it reoccurs I will try unplugging the keyboard, but I am curious how this could be causing the issue? I am using a wired apple keyboard, one of those chrome models. As far as I know there is no key on it that shuts down the computer and I didn't set one up either.
Perhaps the message is left over from my manually shutting down the computer yesterday. I had first tried to shut down the computer by the normal route of going to the Apple icon and choosing shut down, but finder had cancelled shutting down because of unsaved changes in time machine so I manually shut the computer down by pressing the power button.

  • How do I permanently shut off icloud from my macbook pro. Safari will not let me shut down

I have a macbook pro 2008 with operating system Maverick.  Today I was asked to join i cloud.  I do not want to join i cloud.  I just want to keep my computer as it is with the new operating system.  It seems I now joined I cloud and cannot shut down Safari unless i sign up for all of the uses of icloud.  Please advise me how to get out of all of this and just go back to my previous set up.  What can I do to get rid of ICloud and shut down my computer (Safari)?

You can shut off iCloud in System Preferences.
If Safari seems hung, click the Apple icon, then Force Quit. If it says Not Responding next to Safari force quit it.

  • G5 will not restart or shut down

Help. Mg g5 will not shut down or restart

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    Repair both Disks.
Also, In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (without the quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • MacBook Pro will not finish a shut-down.

I have a repeating problem. Starting with 10.5.5 on my 2.2 ghz MacBook Pro 15" (mid-2007) I began having big problems getting it to restart and to shut-down. I was getting ridiculous hangs.
I would find my machine in the morning with the fan still going and looking like it was shut down. I would hit the ON button and nothing would happen. So I had to hold down the ON button for a long time until a full manual shut-down occurred, and then I could restart my machine. This happened with most, but not all of my restarts, and just about all of my shut-downs.
Then I upgraded to a unibody MacBook Pro 15". I migrated my user, and then found I still had the problem. I was convinced it was a problem with 10.5.5. I had a lot of Finder trouble also that started right after that update.
Well, I thought all was well with 10.5.6, but it was not to be. I am still getting a lot of hangs, but mostly only with shut-downs. My restarts seem to make it through.
I am very frustrated, and wondering what to do. I am thinking of calling Tech Support, as this is happening on a new machine.

I experienced the same problem. What I noticed that problem seems to occur more often when bluetooth is switched on. For instance, today I wanted to switch off bluetooth connectivity before switching off laptop completely. The bluetooth icon in menu bar from some strange reason froze completely, rest of programs and OS were working fine. When I wanted to switch off the laptop it happened again, it froze and the only way to switch it off was to hold power button.

  • DV6000 will not keep starting - shuts down after 3 seconds

    Greets,
When pressing the Power On (PO) button, the comp starts, then shuts down immediately (within 3 seconds).
    Things to note:
The fan and drive start - from start to shut down is about 3 seconds.
    The fan does spin.
The power adapter has been plugged in to several different outlets.
The adapter tests OK - pwr out V and A are good.
Tried with and without battery in.
Checked contacts - must be OK if fan and drive start for 3 seconds.
Followed the troubleshooter guide in Manual - nothing there applies.
There are no Bios beeps - not enough On time to get that far.
    Laptop is: Pavilion dv6000

  • Disk Utility Will Not Stop or Shut Down

I'm having trouble with a Drobo drive set up as a Time Machine, but this is not I think a Drobo or Time Machine question. Drobo dashboard reports no problems but the drive will not mount. While trying to investigate that issue, I ran Disk Utility Disk Repair on the drive. It quickly reported "Checking file system" and then ""Volume repair complete."
Then it started "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." It has been doing that for about 4 hours. Roughly one hour into it I clicked on the button to cancel and stop the operation.  The status line reported "Stopped by user," but the status bar on the bottom is still spinning those slanted stripes and if I try to exit Disk Utility is suggests that would be a bad idea because it has not stopped the operation.
Should I just tell Disk Utility to quit or might is actually stop on its own at some point. I know there is risk in doing so, but if it is never going to stop on its own I have to bite the bullet and take my chances. I do have other backups.

It definitely should not take 4 hours especially for updating the boot support partitions. I would suggest stopping it, I would think if the drive does have damage it would already be present considering how long it is taking, not from you stopping it.

  • HT201406 I was printing and printer jammed. iPad gives the command; an error occurred printing this document Cancel Try Again - no response to either command and the iPad will not let me shut down.

I was printing docs from my iPad and the printer jammed. iPad's screen now shows: an error occured printing this document - Cancel Try Again - the touch screen will not respond to any command. Cannot turn it off, cannot cancel and cannot try again. I've turned the printer off and restarted it.

Try a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Ipod will not open or shut down

My ipod touch will not open when I try to use the slide lock, nor will it shutdown...what can I do to fix this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Carolyn Samit, you included "If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings".
