App working directories in Documents folder?

More of a mini-rant than a question...
Why do some programs need to store their 'working' directories smack dab in the Documents folder and not under Applications / Support?
The three programs I have that do this are eyeTV lite, Office 2008, and Parallels.
Is it possible to just go ahead and relocate the folders myself or is this something the developers themselves need to address in future updates?

I just posted on the M$ Mac forum and the respondent pointed squarely at Apple saying ..."This is a long debate within the Macintosh Business Unit (MacBU) at Microsoft. They are following Apple's guidelines but those guidelines can be interpreted in a couple of different ways depending on how you read them."...
He then went on to say I could move that folder and create an alias in the Documents folder. (which I will do, but STILL...)

  • Document folder playing hide & seek

I am a new leopard user and found a weird problem on my Powermac g5...
    1) the document folder on my quick launch bar is there and works
    2) the document folder as it appears in stacks is there and works
    3) I goto user\myname\ and the document folder is not there, not accessible
    4) I check the paths for the documents folder through spotlight, quicklaunch etc and they all say it is in \user\myname\
This has not happened on my intel MBPro

Not sure, but it is possible that the Documents folder got its invisible bit set. Take a look at my article on the problem (which usually afflicts drives, but has been known to disappear folders as well):
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
To see if the info applies to you (you'll see the "gray" effect on the icon if it does) go to the Finder's Go menu, select the "Go to Folder..." option and type /users/yourname/Documents, and then select Column view when the window opens. If the Documents folder then appears in the column, and is a pale gray, then it has indeed had the invisible bit set. Several methods are given for fixing the problem in the article.

PS--Be sure to use the correct slashes when you type the path. Just noticed you are using \ when describing your problem. You want the OTHER slash, / (which is at the bottom of the keyboard).

  • I have been working on a document in Pages 4.3 and now it tells me I can not open the document unless I upgrade to Pages 5.2. When I look up Pages 5.2 the App store says "installed" nor can I find a "purchase" or "install" button.

My OS is 10.9.3.I've been working on a document in Pages 4.3. Now is says I can not open the document unless I upgrade to Pages 5.2. The Pages 5.2 page in the App store says "installed" nor can I find a "purchase" or "install" button. How do I get Pages 5.2?

If you have already updated to Pages 5.2 on your Mac, you may be trying to open the file with a previous version of Pages. If this is the case, you have two versions of Pages on your Mac & are trying to open Pages 5 documents with Pages 4. Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.

  • Why is pages app opening in documents folder?

All of a sudden when I click on Pages in the dock it opens in the documents folder.  Then I have to click on New Document
to open Pages.  It used to just open to Pages.  Minor inconvenience but still annoying.
    How do I fix it?

I did some more reading online and see that many are having this same type problem with Pages 5 but I did not update to Maverick and still have Pages '09 4.3!!
And you're right....it isn't Finder.....at the top of the window it says:
Pages - Documents      to the left of that are the options iCloud and On My Mac
It's strange that this happened just when Maverick came onto the market.
    Thank you for your reply.

  • Mobile Documents Folder Missing in 10.7.3?

I have a 13" MacBook Air and a 27" iMac that I just did the combo update to 10.7.3.  Since I have updated, I am missing the mobile documents folder.  If I upload a pages document to icloud.com on my iMac and then go to icloud.com on my MacBook Air, it show's the file, however, it's the default pages icon, and it doesn't give me the opportunity to download it.
Because of this, I thought I'd look in the "Mobile Documents" folder and see if I can access it from there.  However not that folder is missing.  I have tried many different ways to get it to show up but I've been unable to.
I'm curious if Apple realized some people were using this folder as a "Dropbox" and disabled or further hid the folder so people can't sync files back and forth.  More importantly, why doesn't icloud.com work for me as it used to?
Anyone have this happen to them?
Anyone know of any tricks to get the Mobile Documents folder to show up in 10.7.3?
    Please help!

I can add a very related problem about this folder, after Lion 10.7.3 update.
I have a Goodreader app on my iPad and I used to use ~/Mobile Documents/.../Documents folder to transfer files
    between my Mac and iPad.
After I updated my Mac to Lion 10.7.3, this method no longer works. Changes I make on my Mac's
~/Mobile Documents/.../Documents folder are no longer sent to the iCloud server and hence not pushed to my iPad. On the other hand, changes made on my iPad's Goodreader app continue to show up on the iCloud server, but they don't get pushed to my Mac.
So I confirm that this update causes problems.

  • Folder redirection configured in GPO does not create Documents folder and does not redirect

    Hi
Another Folder Redirect-post - sorry for that, but I could not find an answer for my problem so far: even with consulting many threads here...
We have an existing environment under Windows XP and want to move away from that. Now I ran into troubles with folder redirection...
The following folder- and permission structure exists so far:
\\<server>\<Users$-share>: This is the base folder for all users-directories
-> Permissions: SYSTEM: Full / Administrators: Full / Users: Read&Execute, only this folder
-> Share-permissions: Authenticated users: Full control
\\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>: base folder for the specific user
-> Permissions: SYSTEM: Full / Administrators: Full / User: Change, all permissions inherited onwards
-> Giving only change permission prevent further problems with self-called "advanced users"... ;-)
\\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\profil.V2: Profile directory of the user
-> Of course here the permissions are set by the system: override the predefined permission
\\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\daten: Atcual Home directory of the user
\\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\daten\Documents: Suposed Documents directory of the user
Now I am going to Server 2012 and Windows 8.1, configured the GPO to redirect Documents folder into the above mentioned:
GPO - User configuration - Policies - Windows settings - Folder Redirection - Documents:
Setting: Standart - redirects all folders to the same path
Destination folder: Copy to base directory of the user
I apply policy to the user, log out and in - it doesn't work, no folder Documents created in my home-folder, Folder Documents still configured at C:\Users\<user>\Documents
    A very special point:
I also do Redirection of the My Pictures-folder: Define it to follow the Documents folder. Funnily that one works and creates and configures \\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\daten\Pictures
-> So in my eyes, it should work!
Then: I want to do the folder redirection without Offline Files, due to the fact, that our users work with dynamically assigned virtual desktops, which are been cleaned everytime a user logs off a machine. Therefore synchronizing doesn't make sense...
I just cannot see, why this redirection does not work :-(
Thank you very much for any help!
    Kind regards
    David

    Hi David,
Before going further, would you please let me confirm the OS version of the Windows Server which you used to
configure folder redirection? Based on your description, did you mean that those users (who will be applied folder redirection settings) logged on Windows XP client computer?
When you configure the folder redirection setting in Document Properties (path:
User Configuration-> Policies-> Windows Settings-> Folder Redirection-> Documents), please check if you checked “Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating system” in Settings
    tab. As below picture shows.
    à
GPO - User configuration - Policies - Windows settings - Folder Redirection - Documents:
    à•Setting: Standart
    - redirects all folders to the same path
    à•Destination
folder: Copy to base directory of the user
Would you please provide a screenshot of those settings you describe? Meanwhile, please summarily describe
that how you configure. For example, where this GPO link to? Or any other. It will help me to understand clearly. Thanks for your understanding.
    In addition, please use
gpresult command to check if the folder redirection group policy was really applied.
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • Need to know how to allow mail to be sent to my Hosted Sharepoint 2013 site's documents folder/ Using CRD 7 reporting

I have gotten as far as adding a new app, naming the folder and going into CRD, for the report we need online and attempted to enter the settings information for our sharepoint site. The issue is no matter how I enter the credentials it will not authorize
and finish the connection. We have tried a couple of different things when it comes to the user name and domain line. we tried:
    corporate\username;
    corporate-traffic.com\username;
    [email protected]..
we are trying to figure out the correct way to enter this information, mainly what the domain name should be since Sharepoint 2013 is all cloud based.
My issue is when I get to entering credentials none of my admins credentials work... I think it may be the domain name that is throwing it off. I keep getting the error: server was unable to process request ---> Access is denied. (Exception
    From HRESULT: 0x80070005 ((E_ACCESSDENIED))
So can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this error and enable the report to email to my sharepoint site documents folder?
    Just to clarify...
I need the correct domain info per office 365's Sharepoint to enter the info into our report options on CRD seven report. And how we can enable SMTP to our documents folder on our SharePoint site.

I asked Christian Steven's Support staff about this and they came out with a fix to allow us to do exactly what I asked in the first post.
We then had an issue with an error saying Crystal Reports couldn't find the rasauditingw.dll. After a few months of going back and forth they finally looked deeper into the issue and informed me other businesses are having the same issue with the add in
they designed. They still claim it is not there software but Crystal Reports software that is the issue.
Just to clarify, the error only appeared after the add in was put in place. Anyways, after they dug some more the following post was the end game.
"The development team was finally able to get into this issue (seems other businesses are seeing this same issue now). It was in fact an issue with SAP Business Objects and where it was looking for the rasauditingw.dll.
****WARNING THIS IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!****
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES TO YOUR PROGRAMS OR SYSTEM THIS FIX MAY CAUSE
BACKUP YOUR SERVER OR TAKE A SNAP SHOT (VM) BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING
We copied the rasauditngw.dll file into the system32 folder and the sysWOW64 folder and then renamed the original rasauditingw.dll to rasauditingw.dll.bak (Original file in this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise
    XI 4.0\win32_x86).
So far so good. We have not seen any errors in the last couple of days since the fix. I hope this helps others who run into this mystery problem. Christen Steven was gracious enough to dig into this problem and quell my frustrations and issues with the
"crd.exe - Entry Point Not Found" error" "
We haven't seen any issue with our CRD server since we moved the copies of that .dll file over into our sys32 folder and sysWOW64 folder on the CRD server (our server where the Christian Steven software resides).

  • How to confirm the var/mobile/...../Document folder is in the archive package

I'm a newbie, so I'm not sure I am saying this correctly, so bear with me.  I recently uploaded my app to itunes Connect and was "Ready for sale" a few days ago.  When it appeared in the App Store I purchased it to see how it looks.  I noticed that the information contained in my database, that I didn't want updated appeared correctly.  However, the information I wanted updated did not appear.  I suspect that maybe I didn't archive the var/mobile/....../Documents folder.  How can I verify that I did? and if I did why didn't it appear?  Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can share.

  • What is best way to clean up startup disc?  What apps work?

What is the best way to clean up my startup disc?  Are any of the clean up apps trustworthy?

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
    Also, Find Any File
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Moving iTunes library

    Moving iMovie projects folder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289
Things to consider before moving your iPhoto Library Folder to a new or external location like an external hard drive.
If you make movies on any iDevices using iMovie for iOS,, then transfer the video footage, the IOS version of iMovie saves the footage as a movie file in IPhoto for IOS and will automatically get transferred to iPhoto for the Mac when you upload the video from your iDevice.
Newer versions of iMovie will work and link those video files found in your iPhoto Library on your Mac, but those links can be lost if you move your iPhoto library and you will not be able to relink that video afterwards as the current versions of iMovie seem to not have a relink option for the video portion of the files (ironically, current versions of iMovie HAVE the ability to re-link the audio files from the video footage, though  (The inability to re-link the video files could be a possible bug or oversight in current versions iMovie).
The lost video links show up as "blacked-out" video blocks with no content.
    Before moving the iPhoto Library
If you make movies with iMovie using iPad or iPhone video then 'Consolidate' the files before you finish. This will gather (albeit by duplicating) all the relevant files in the project in one place. After consolidating/duplicating all of the audio and video footage to a seperate, independent location,it should be safe to move your iPhoto library.
The potential way to circumvent this issues maybe to try and import  iPad and iPhoto video directly into iMovie which would be another solution.
    Good Luck!

  • Weird delays opening files related to Mobile Documents folder

This is a very weird situation. With iCloud enabled, I get a weird delay when opening files.
    What happens:
I open basically any sort of file (word, pages, zip file, etc).
I will get the spinning beachball for 5-10 seconds and cannot interact with the program in any way.
The following appears in the System Log:
10/23/11 8:39:41.312 PM librariand: changing log level to 5

This issue occurs whether or not I have "Documents & Data" selected for sync in iCloud preferences.
Interestingly enough, if I immediately open another file after this occurs, the issue does not happen again right away. However, if I wait about two minutes and open one, it does occur every time.
(Note: My acount name and email address have been replaced with "username" but the log is otherwise unaltered)

I have the exact same problem.  It's been driving me crazy ever since I "upgraded" to Lion.  I finally traced it to iCloud and the Mobile Documents folder using Console, which lead me here.
Any time I launch Pages, QuickTime, or TextEdit (TextEdit, really?), the first file I try to open gives me the spinning beachball of death for about 10 seconds before I can do anything.
I did numerous searches regarding the spinning beach ball of death in relation to those apps and found nothing germaine before I specifically searched for "collection does not match configured AppleID." This makes me think that a lot of other people are having this problem who just haven't discovered this thread.
I will try disabling "Documents & Data" but an actual fix would be greatly appreciated.  "It just works" has not applied to many aspects of iCloud.  I thought MobileMe had its issues, but iCloud is a mess in my personal experience, well beyond this issue.  I appreciate the potential and am clinging to some faith in Apple, but Lion and iCloud have been REALLY testing my patience.  Snow Leopard was a rock.  This all seems like beta software hastily ported from iOS.

  • Can iCloud documents in Mobile Documents folder be restored from a Time Machine backup?

Integration with iCloud seems much improved so far in Mountain Lion. Thanks, Apple! Just to be on the safe side, though: are documents stored in the ~/Library/Mobile Documents folder included in Time Machine backups, and fully restorable? This seemed a little uneven prior to Mountain Lion.
I just wanted to make sure that these documents are always backed up in case there is ever a problem with iCloud (or in case I simply make a mistake and an unintended change or deletion propogates across all my devices and I need to restore an earlier version).

Wow! It didn't occur to me that it would work this way, although of course it makes perfect sense—and it works. I just tried it.
It doesn't actually seem to work with older documents (I tried in Pages), and I'm not sure if that problem has to do with Mountain Lion, or previous versions of iWork apps, or both. But I tried it with a fresh document, deleted it restored it, and was able to use it. So finally it seems that iCloud works the way it should.
    Thanks again.

  • Keeping guest out of my Document folder

I'm I missing somthing ! When I set up a Guest Account how I can keep my guest from looking into my Documents folder & certain applications. I appears that my guest account is able to see my Document folder with work stuff in it? Isn’t suppose to have a clean Doc folder available? Can I give my guest access to certain folders only like itunes and iphoto and eliminate other applications i.e. Quicken …
    Thanks

you can enable parental controls on the guest account through the parental controls system preferences pane. select which apps you want the guest to be able to use. if you have all your work documents in your home folder (and in the documents folder that it came with, not some other folder), then the guest doesn't have access; however, if you create a new folder in the root level of your home folder, by default everyone has read access. to change this, get info in finder and click on sharing permissions, and where it says everyone, change to no access and apply to all enclosed items. playing around with parental controls should allow you to limit whatever you don't want the guest account from using.

  • App works when exported, but not in FlashBuilder

I have an AIR drag-and-drop app that uses NativeDragEvent.NATIVE_DRAG_ENTER
The app works as intended when I export it for release.   When I run or debug with FlashBuilder the application does not acknowledge files of any type being dragged over it.
Again, when the application is installed, it works great.  I'm dragging and dropping without issue.  This only happens when I'm running the app from FlashBuilder.  This isn't a big deal, but it is annyoing.
    Any ideas?

I suspect this is where my issue lies, but I am not sure how
to fix it. I have attached some code that defines the image
location. I am able to successfully retrieve documents with the
following, is this the same type of scenerio,
    http://www.skytitleagency.com/documents/Land_Contract.doc,
except in the images folder ?

  • System property that represents a user's My Documents folder

Hi! What is the System property that points to a user's My Documents folder on Windows platform? Thanks!

    >
    Define "only".
I would imagine that there is a highly finite number
of file configurations on all Win OS 9x onwards and
    System.property("os.name"); would resolve this with
only a few additional lines of code.
Actually, that's not true either... In Win 2K and above, the My Documents folder can be located in an almost infinite number of places, that are then mapped to a virtual My Documents folder.
This can include network locations (in the case where a user's Windows profile is stored on a central server instead of on each workstation), or with phyisical names other than "My Documents". For example, when using Win XP to connect to an Active Directory hosted on a Win 2003 server, the phyiscal location of the My Documents folder is actually named with the user's name - i.e. "John's Documents".
Even better, the name that is selected is not always the Windows login name - but could also be the alias that the user has created for themselves.
Anyway, here's the point: If you want your code to work on all Win platforms (today and in the future), you have to get the directory the way the Windows API says you have to get it: using the SHGetSpecialFolderLocation function. If you want to try to hack something together, then it might work in a lot of cases for a little while. But it is going to break at some point. Personally, if I know a piece of code I'm writing is going to cause my app to break in the future, I write it differently so that won't happen - but that's just me.
There's probably a way to find this info in the registry as well, but there is no guarantee that the location this information is stored in the registry will remain the same - if it changes, then the SHGetSpecialFolderLocation implementation will change.
