AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect is not Redirected into Homedrive

Hi everybody.
We're experiencing issues with the intire "protect" folder in Windows 7 x64
Overview:
AppData Roaming --> Folder Redirection into Homedirectory is enabled by GPO
Windows 7 Enterprise x64
Windows Server 2012 R2
The intire Folder AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ is not redirecting into the useres Homedrive, which is causing errors - for example in Google Chrome (User can save passwords and cookies, but their lost after every new login)
Basicly our users keep losing all their DPAPI keys.
Our assumption is, that DPAPI works with %userprofile% which is linked to C:\Users\[Username] and addes the AppData Roaming part to the environment variable instead of using %appdata% pointing to the users homedrive...
New keys are generated locally instead of in redirected place.
We've already startet working with credential roaming (in Active Directory) - but we find it dangerouse since we're a school, inwich teacher and students change their workplace alot - and we must store all passwords etc. for 6 years and longer (its
dumb i know). If a new DPAPI file is generated for every PC and every new user password etc. the cute 750 Byte which one of those files approx. has, isnt that cute anymore. We dont want our AD to grow that bad. We then also found a Hotfix - this
doesnt solve our Problem either since most Programs we use dont mark their BLOB as used - so we cant use the Filter not to roam unused keys....
So, thats why we're looking for a solution inwich, as everyone would expect, really the intire Appdata\roaming is redirected, without any exceptions.

Hi,
I am currently working on the environment.
Besides, would you might collect the gpresult.log and then upload here for further investigation?
Troubleshooting Group Policy Using Event Logs
Follow the guide here to upload the log files:
Use
OneDrive(SkyDrive) to upload collected files and post screen shot/picture. (Updated: 1/16/2012)
Meanwhile, if we are considering some more suitable deployment plan, I suggest we seek help with experts with good experiences, also we may try to ask in the following forum for the suitable plan:

when downloading itune update on my PC (vistia)it says, error getting security: C:\Users\shawn\AppData\roaming\Microsoft\InrternetExplorer\Quick Launch\GetLastError:87, how do i fix this

As you can see below, when I right click, I have no such option. In the User Account Settings, I'm operating as the "System Administrator".
Any other suggestions?

• I've picked up a trojan. Neither norton or superantispyware can find the source. when i delete the "ad" files and the index.dat file in user/appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows/cookies and cookies/low they come back the next time i start firefox

The "ad" file names look like they're randomly generated. They look like n6sxx8t5.dat and 038prmz7.txt. I get one for every pop-up ad that is generated. That pop-up ad is generally related to the type of web page i'm on when it triggers. it only occurs once per session. what i don't know is if it is also trying to capture any data i'm entering.
like i said, i've deleted the text and index.dat files, but they keep coming back.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
• Office 2010, Appdata, Roaming user profile and Normal.dot

Hello,
We have roaming profile on our domain users and they are working fine within the network.
When they are at home using the same computers, they login with a cached copy of their domain profile.
Server is 2008 R2, Windows 7 x64 clients and Office 2010 x64 package.
When the users go home, they get "The file Normal.dot cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents" and "Word cannot open the existing file (Normal)" error when they open Word 2010.
If they use VPN or connect remotely to the network, everything is fine. But when they are at home and just want to open a document from their USB stick, this happens.
The users Documents, Desktop, Favorites etc are mapped to DFS shares in the network.
This of course means, they don't have access to them at home, which is fine.
On the ADM template for Office 2010, the User Template path is set to : "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates"
AppData folders is redirected to localprofile for the above to work and under the "Exclude Directories in romaing profile" we have added the entire "AppData\Roaming" (we are testing so that is fine for now) but still the "Appdata\Roaming"
travels with the roaming profile which means the Template path becomes unavailable (or so it seems) when the users disconnect from the network.
But what is confusing is, I can still browse to the above path manually, but Word 2010 some how seems to think its not there.
We do not want to use Offline feature (yet), and want to find if there is any other method of solving this.
Ramu V Ramanan

Thanks Jeff. I don't want to go down that second path, autorecover is not our foe here, its the 'Templates folder'
As for the first part, that doesn't work. The problem is word still looks for the path "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates" which it thinks is not
available, when it is (as its exempted from being roaming using the registry value/GPO). Moreover, when the user is disconnected from the network, they can't click Modify and change the path, it simply doesn't do anything when you click Modify on
the screen to change the path to the template file.
We are considering ditching the roaming profiles, especially because the machines are now travelling outside the network. Or creating a special folder in all those machines where we can put a copy of the normal.dot. This is only affecting about 100 such
users, other users who have local profiles on the machines are fine.
Cheers,
Ramu

• Adobe Presenter not intergrated into Powerpoint

We've just purchased and installed a copy of Adobe Pro Extended 9 which includes Adobe Presenter. However, when I open Powerpoint there is no sign of Presenter integration.
Running Acrobat Pro Extended 9 on Win32, Powerpoint 2003.
Thanks.

I've installed presenter from the Acrobat DVD, I see in my Vista Business x64 start menu under Adobe "Adobe Presenter". In PowerPoint 2007 I went to Disabled and Presenter was listed, I selected it and enabled it (now when I go back to disable nothing is listed - this is good), I went to Add-ins, Presenter is NOT listed, I selected COM Add-ins and clicked GO, presenter is NOT listed (a bunch of stuff is listed but not Presenter). If I click on the Add button a window opens for "C:\Users\jgt\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns", nothing is listed in this folder. If I browse to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Presenter 7 folder I don't know what I should be looking for.
I've installed patch 701, 702, but 705 will not install I get a "Microsoft Visual C + + Runtime Library" error "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way." and it points to the folder where I have the 705 update stored. I copied the update file to the C root level, it still fails but does not give me the "Microsoft Visual C" window.

It sounds as though you’ve had a recent infection and one of your ‘anti’ programs has removed the malware files, or some of them, but missed the entry in the registry, possibly due to an out-dated definitions database. I suggest you, firstly, download and
run the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from
http://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ to ensure that you are completely clean. If you then restart the computer and the message is still appearing try one of these, but it is prudent to create a system restore point before you change the registry in (1) below
by going to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > System > System Protection (in the left pane) > System Protection Tab > Create and make sure you give it a meaningful name.
1. The entry is probably in one of the \Run keys, but as the rascal could be hiding in a number of other ‘autorun’ keys, it’s quicker to search the whole registry. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type regedit and press Enter. Click Edit > Find and
type the rogue’s name, put ticks in Keys, Values and Data, then click Find Next. When it’s found in the right pane, right-click it and delete it. There should be only one entry but press F3 to continue searching, just to confirm there are no more.
2. If you’re concerned about making registry changes disable the entry using the system configuration utility, but bear in mind that you’re disabling the entry not deleting it as you would in (1) above. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type msconfig
and press Enter. Go to the Startup Tab and remove the tick alongside the rogue’s name. Click Apply, OK, etc. and restart the computer. When it restarts, put a tick in ‘Don‘t show this again‘ as you‘re effectively doing a selective start up.

Very few authentic dll files reside in that folder. It sounds as though you’ve had a recent infection and one of your ‘anti’ programs has removed the malware files, or some of them, but missed the entry in the registry, possibly due to an out-dated definitions

I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key? That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist. Then select the SL partition for boot. Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

• Possible new virus/malware? slui.exe in %Userprofile%\AppData\Roaming

Hi,
I would like to start a discussion for one strange problem that I encountered in my company. Four Notebooks with Windows 7 x64 Enterprise SP1 versions all of a sudden after 1-2-3hours period cannot open any webpage trough any browser (IE,FF, Chrome) but
everything is pingable via command prompt. We made sure that it is not a DNS problem, whole network is functioning properly.
After one college called me because of the problem described above I started to dig trough the active processes that were running in that moment and slui.exe caught my attention because it was unusual for me to see that process even running. The process
itself is very small, only 54k. And starting folder is located in userprofile\AppData\Roaming\DNCache folder, in there are a couple of files (see picture bellow). That is not a location for slui.exe in my humble opionion, slui.exe resides in System32 folder.
You cannot delete the folder because it is being used, even with file unlocker it won't let you delete it. I went to SAFE mode and deleted it. Also in safe mode run msconfig and clear out any files that have "Unknown" manufacturer and start with
d..something, sorry cannot remember the correct name, but are the same as in DNCache folder. Our company uses Microsoft Forefront for protection. I am now waiting to see if I have solved the issue.
Could that be somekind of a virus/malware?
Thanks,

Hi,
Based on m research, “suli.exe” has not been recorded into MS data. It may be not a virus.

• AppData Roaming Issues

Hi - I have a policy that redirects AppData folder separate from the user's Documents, Desktop, Favorites, etc. Each folders are separated from each other so redirection happens on all folders when users login into TS server. The issue with AppData is when
the user logs in to a local laptop as themselves, it also does roaming locally to the laptop which causes the following scenario:
1. Local AppData streams over a slow bandwidth link (vpn, ptp, dsl).
2. Local AppData settings (i.e. user personalized settings, task bar shortcuts, etc.) doesn't work when the user is not plugged in to the domain network.
Question:
1. I was wondering if there's a way to create a policy that will detect if the user is on a slow link network (i.e. remote, vpn, etc).
2. Is there a way to leave AppData cache when user is not in the domain network leaving user's personalized settings in their laptops?
Please kindly advise.
Cheers - DB

Hi,
For using Folder Redirection to redirect Appdata, only Appdata roaming can be redirected.
Besides, Folder redirection applies only to applications that use the Windows shell APIs to redirect common folder paths. For example, if an application writes a file to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming,
the file is written to the local profile and not redirected to the network location.
Regarding Folder Redirection, the following article can be referred to for more information.

1. I was wondering if there's a way to create a policy that will detect if the user is on a slow link network (i.e. remote, vpn, etc).
Yes, we can use Group Policy to configure slow link threshold.
Regarding slow link detection, the following article can be referred to for more information.

Usually, Folder Redirection is used together with Offline Files which is enabled by default.
Offline Files makes network files available to an end user when a network connection to the server is unavailable or slow.

• In Windows 8.1, why does Thunderbird have profiles in username\appdata\local and in username\appdata\roaming?

I searched online to find out how to find my address book and found an article that said to look in Users\username\appdata\local\thunderbird. I did not find it there, so I did more searching and found it in Users\username\appdata\roaming\thunderbird. Do I need the Users\username\appdata\local\thunderbird directory, or is It a leftover from a previous version of Thunderbird? I would like to delete it if I don't need it.

Background info:
When Thunderbird program is installed it puts it here:
* C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\
or if using windows 64bit, it will be here:
* C:\Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\
when you run Thunderbird, it will create a default profile and this is where all your mail accounts, address books, filters, passwords etc are stored. Use for backup purposes.
* C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Profile name\
Windows also creates some cache folders and files, which is stored here:
* C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Thunderbird
These files and folders do not contain any emails etc and are not required for backup purposes.
You can clear the cache from Thunderbird.
Tools > clear Recent history.
Windows uses the AppData\Local.

• Exchange Server 2013: incoming messages are not delivered into user mailboxes occasionally

Exchange Server 2013 CU1, two mailbox servers (DAG, only one mail database), two CAS servers (NLB cluster). Two Sendmail/CentOS-based SMTP relays route mail between Exchange servers and Internet (incoming mail is routed to NLB cluster name).
Usually mail flow is OK: messages are sent and received normally. However, I've got several complains from different users. They state that occasionally they don't receive messages that were sent to them from outside. Tomorrow morning I've decided to
investigate the issue.
So, we have a message sent from Gmail account that was not delivered in user mailbox. It was received and routed to Exchange by Sendmail host:
Jun 27 22:06:37 MX01 sendmail[12169]: r5RG6HC8012166: to=<USER_ADDRESS>, delay=00:00:19, xdelay=00:00:19, mailer=smtp, pri=124702, relay=NLB-FQDN [NLB-IP], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (<CAHgK_sjEkj41htuVsutMP3XhgR5RRDs8-EgSC-UfHoaiHWFj=A@mail.gmail.com>
[InternalId=13069585481819] Queued mail for delivery)
Running Get-MessageTrackingLog applet on the mailbox servers displayed the followed log entries for the message:
DB Server #1:
22:11:18 HAREDIRECT
22:11:18 RECEIVE
22:11:18 AGENTINFO
DB Server #2:
22:11:18 HARECEIVE
22:12:44 HADISCARD
So, we can see that the message was placed into shadow queues, but was NOT delivered into mailbox (no DELIVER status entries). Also pay attention to the timing. Time on all the servers is in sync, but Sendmail timestamp is 22:06, and Exchange timestamps
are 5 minutes behind it.
Today a message sent to the same address from the same Google mailbox was received by Exchange and placed into user mailbox with no glitches.
We use Exchange antispam system activated on Exchange mailbox servers. Spam is never dropped silently. It is either returned to sender (SCL 9) or placed into quarantine mailbox (SCL 6 and above). I'm pretty sure that the lost message was not in the quarantine
mailbox this morning, and the sender didn't receive any NDRs.
Any ideas what to investigate next?

Hi,
Do you mean the emails are placed in the Shadow Redundancy queue?

• What is the file or registry in mozilla app that gets launch to create the APPData\Roaming\Mozilla

I do like to know what is the file that triggers when you launch the Mozilla Firefox for the first time to create the folder under AppData either Local or Roaming because i want to change it to a different name since i want to have 2 versions of mozilla in the same computer and the old version i want it to customize for my company web application only.
I have open all the files with extension *.JS but none of them have the parameter to create the folder I have also look into every INI file inside mozilla firefox application but no info was found as well.
I have use the ORCA MSI editor to reveal the registry keys but I am not sure since many of them leads to the Mozilla folder but none to the Appdata either Roaming or Local.
Please let me know if you have some hints or files that i need to edit to modify that name to perhaps MOZ2015
Thank you in advance for your reply

The KDAoracle.exe is the same as firefox .exe but i change it since i am customizing the mozilla to fit my internal in house application that is the reason why i would like to change the name from
Mozilla to ====> KDAORA when it gets create for the first time but i need to know where does the system gets the name MOZILLA to be written or created for the first time under APPData Roaming or Local
in essence there is a file that the system look inside the mozilla firefox program files maybe a dll or extension db i have no idea what is the file that provide with the name each time the mozilla firefox is launched for the FIRST time ONLY
So once mozilla is installed you look under AppData either local or roaming there is no MOZILLA folder there but once you launch mozilla a forlder gets created there (( I want to know where does the system pick the name MOZILLA )) for the screen shot it seems like it looks inside the firefox program files but it is not clear what file gets read to create the folder))
I do like to thank you all for looking into this and giving me all the hints I want but once i get my hands on the file that gets read to provide the name i will modify and remane the name from Mozilla to the name I would like to
Thanks and regards to all
