Appearance of Bulleted Lists & Checkmark Webdings Character in IE vs. Firefox

I am a RoboHelp X5 user and have noticed that bulleted lists and checkmarks (a webdings character) in published files are distorted when displayed in Firefox (version 3.0.15, the latest version 8, and perhaps other versions) and want to know if there is a way to resolve this.  When I use Internet Explorer (vresion 7.0.5730.11), the bulleted lists and checkmarks appear as they should.
The bulleted lists show the line of text in the following paragraph beneath the bullet rather than adjacent to the bullet.
The checkmarks  that show as checkmarks in IE 7.0.5730.11 show up as the character "a" in the aforementioned Firefox versions.
A pdf is attached showing the differences in appearance of bulleted lists and the checkmark in both IE and Firefox. Any input welcomed.
Thanks in advance!

Hi William,
I'm not sure how to reply to you...  I went to the forum and couldn't figure it out.  This email is a direct response to the email sent to me from you through the forums page.  Please let me know if you do receive this.  In any case, thank you for your info.  Very helpful!
Two Questions:
1) If I insert the ✔ code into the html, will it be viewable as a checkmark in any version of any browser?
2) Many of the bulleted paragraphs (but not all) that are having that unusual presentation problem were created under the Normal style, manually highlight, and made "bulleted" by clicking the bullet button.  For some of these, I've tried just creating a BULLETS paragraph style, and applying this style to the problematic text, and it seems to solve the problem.  Will this solve the problem when viewed through any version of any browser?
Thank you so much!

  • My bulleted list displays correctly in IE 8 and Firefox, but not in IE 7

I have a simple bulleted list in a right floated sidebar for a website. If views fine in IE 8 and Firefox, but not in IE 7 (and perhaps earlier, though I only have access to machines with IE 7 and 8.
Because the default indent for the bulleted list moves it too far to the right, I set a negative margin for that area of text in order to move it to the left a little. While it looks great in IE 8 and Firefox, it appears this margin setting is causing the bulleted list to shift too far to the left in at least IE 7. The rest of the copy in the sidebar div lookes fine including the title and paragraph copy.
    Can anyone suggest a fix?
Also, I noticed the spacing above the main content div is smaller in IE 7 than with the IE 8 and Firefox. This div has a h1 heading followed by paragraphs. (This site was developed using a pre-existing CSS style sheet from Dreamweaver by the way.)

Strangely when I replied via e-mail my message got garbled when I looked at it here.
I was able to move over the bullet items to the left using your suggestion, however it now shows this line of copy above the page at the top of the window in the IE browser (both IE 7 and IE 8):
    <!--[if lte 7]>
I'm including the code where you had indicated I should place it - in the <head> section after the link to the main stylesheet. I included it just after the other conditional comments. Perhaps I've included it in the wrong place - hence the line appearing above the pages (just above the banner)?
I did not change any other parameter. (This is a template page as all pages in the site are based on it.) The list feature does appear on a number of pages.
Also I should note the bullets have mysteriously disappeared and it's actually an unbulleted list in IE 7, which I could live with if I have to.

  • My numbered listing is appearing as bullets

Could someone please help me out. when I generate a Webhelp in RH 8 my numbered listing is appearing as bullet points. How can I correct this?

  • How do I format bullet lists in the Notes tab?

I have a transcript of the audio narration in the Notes section of my source PowerPoint slides. When I publish with Adobe Presenter, these transcripts appear in the Notes tab in the published course. However, when I publish my course, any bullet lists that I may have formatted in the Notes view in PowerPoint, do not format correctly in the published course. The text of the bullets is there, but the bullet formatting is missing.
I am using Adobe Presenter 8, PowerPoint 2007, and I'm running on Windows 7 Professional. I have tried saving my PowerPoint file in the PPTX format and in the older PPT format. Neither retains the bullet-list formatting in the published course.
Is there a trick to getting lists to format correctly in the Notes tab?

  • Want to change a bulleted list to a checkbox list -- HELP

Why is this so hard? I have a list of software product features, I want the list to have checkboxes rather than bullets so readers will feel urge to check off features when comparing software to other solutions. DOESNT HAVE TO BE INTERACTIVE. Just a visual. Just a G&*$^#*!)*%! checkbox. I have spent a half hour trying to find a solution to this SIMPLE F9823769 thing. Why so difficult? Wasting of time ion simple tasks not happy. On CC (online) version 9, not on a Mac so don't assume it. Thanks for help

Or, Alt click the the Bulleted List icon, List Type/Bullets, Bullet Character/Add and look for the checkbox. Then you'll have it as an option to apply when need it.

  • Why are spaces missing at end of wrapped lines in bulleted lists

    Hi -
Acrobat 11.0.10, Word 2013, Windows 7 ... Sometimes tagged PDFs don't have spaces at the end of wrapping lines in bulleted lists, throughout the document. In text edit mode the cursor movement indicates no space exists. Selecting with text touch-up shows no space. In accessible text the last word on line runs into first word on next line.  JAWS mis-pronounces those words as if they are one word.  PAC preview also shows the words running together.
Adding a space in text edit mode works for a few minutes, but when file is saved & reopened spaces are gone, even if, immediately after adding the spaces, I select the block of LBody text with text touch-up and re-tag it and initially spaces appear to have been added.
Is starting to happen on a routine basis, different source files, different people/computers generating the PDFs, multiple computer reboots, Acrobat repair run, MS Office repair run. But not consistent ... e.g., if someone generated PDF with no spaces at end, someone else can generate from same source and spaces are present.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Thanks 'C' student, nice to know it's not just us - "misery loves company" and all that.
So far besides your reply there's deafening silence.
Come on, folks, don't any of you experts have a solution for this? Or at least an inkling of an idea what may be causing this? It's starting to happen all the time now, becoming a major problem.  We may have to start by getting Acrobat to self-tag rather than starting with the tags generated from the source programs, but that adds time and effort because Acrobat's tags for our often complex documents are laughable and have, ironically, such poor syntax.
Is there a way to get a discussion seen by more people?

  • Text color changes when more than one color is used in the same paragraph in a bulleted list

I work in a print shop on designers' files preparing them for print. Machine I use is an iMac, plenty of RAM, running Tiger 10.4. Here is my problem: A PC user sent us an InDesign CS3 file. A portion of the text is styled as a bulleted list with character color and bullet (the solid circle) defined as (default) black. However, the style is over-ridden on the bullet and first two words following the bullet with a spot color red, which is present in the Swatches palette (PMS 186). The remainder of the sentence stays black. The text somehow lost this override, and instead of keeping the 2 different colors all the text changed to black. This seems to have occurred when I saved the file on my machine. When I go back and open the original file the text is still colored both red and black. I think that the file was originally an InDesign CS2 file, and could even have been a Indd version 1 or Quark file. Why did the color change with no user intervention? Also, I can't understand why, when the first 2 words are highlighted and changed to red, the bullet also changes to red. (That is good, of course, because that is what we want, but I don't understand how that happens when the character style is black, and I can't even highlight the bullet itself). I sure would appreciate any ideas anyone has on this, I have to try to explain why we printed the text in black when it was supposed to be red and black!

thanks Alan and Bob. Nothing has explained the loss of color so far.
Alan, I will suggest to the designer that she use a nested style. I wonder if that will make the styling more stable moving accross the different platforms.
Bob, I feel like you may have thought, as I did, that hundreds of saves and saved-as and many different applications would have damaged the file, but as you could see by the History, the file was fairly fresh.
There is a very outside chance that I wiped out the style overides by command click but I am really careful and I doubt it.
So I'll thank you both again and check back each day, perhaps this will happen to someone else and become an issue. I have tried to repeat my actions and cause the error again but to no avail.

  • More Bulleted List Weirdness (TCS3)

I have a linked FrameMaker book into my RH9 project. I'm using the RHStyleMapping.css for all my topics. My Frame styles are linked to a RH style (source) and I'm using the 'convert Autonumber to HTML List' setting for both levels. I'm outputting to AIRHelp browser based help.
In Frame I have 2 levels of bulleted lists.
    My converted styles are:
    p.FM_Bulleted
    p.FM_Bulleted_indent
When these topics are converted, something strange is happening to my second level indent. Here is the style used in a section of a numbered list:
This is how it should be.
However, where I have used the same style in the middle of my first level bulleted list, it comes out like this (from Telnet to rlogin):
When I look at the HTML for the generated page (the WYSIWYMG is ok), what seems to be happening is that the '_' between Bulleted and indent in p.FM_Bulleted_indent is being removed when included as part of a bulleted list, causing the problem.
Any ideas how this can be happening?
    Mark

Welcome to the paragraph composer. InDesign's text composition engine is
far more advanced than XPress'. It looks at the entire paragraph.
You can turn it off, but I don't advise it. Instead, if you need words
to stay together, use a no break attribute (create a character style for
    it).
You say it's off, but there's no way it would be acting that way if it
were. Look in the paragraph panel and the paragraph styles.

  • How to make an editable bulleted list with multiple lines and custom bullets?

How do I create an editable bulleted list in Acrobat Pro? I've figured out how to add text fields with multiple lines, and how to add a list box, but I don't see the check box for multiple lines in the list box or how to add bullet points. Can someone please give me step by step instructions? Also is it possible to use custom bullet points?

Is it a text field or a list box field? The two are not the same...
The bullets are something that the user will have to enter manually (into a text field, they can only select values in a list-box).
They can use any unicode character, or special characters if the font used for that field allows for it. You can't use images for the bullets, if that's what you mean.

  • Bulleted List Question

I'm applying a new style for my company's technical data sheets. The designer created a new bullet using a Wingdings 3 symbol. I incorporated that symbol, a lower case u that displays as a triangle rotated 90 degrees to stand on one tip. I copied that symbol from my computer's character map and followed the user guide instructions to create the special bullet symbol and that works fine. Where I'm having trouble is that the text following this new style bullet is in Frutiger roman font. When I type text following the bullet, I get wingdings 3 symbols. When I highlight those characters and assign Frutiger roman font, the bullet reverts to a lower case u.
Can FM 7.0 use a wingdings character to start a bulleted list and use other font for text following the bullet? Thanks.

The problem you're running into is likely because of a "quirk" in the way FM handles font changes within paragraphs.
To start with, are you creating a bulleted paragraph style, or are you just putting the bullet symbol in front of the text in the paragraph?
If you're just inserting the bullet after copying from the Character map, the better approach is to
    1. create a new character style, e.g. "Wing3", that is set to be the Wingdings3 symbols.
    2. create a new paragraph style, e.g. "NewBullet" with the Frutiger font for the paragraph, and in the autonumber properties of this paragraph tag specify the special character and that it should use Wing3 as the character format.
This is where it gets a bit tricky, though, because it may be difficult to find the correct character to put into the Autonumber Format dialog box, because FM sometimes "rearranges" the character mapping for some fonts. So, if you have a problem getting the correct character to be displayed for the bullet, don't give up -- post back here and let us know.

  • Bulleted list, type breaking to next line

I'm working in ID CS3. I set up a nested style sheet for a bulleted list. However, the type is breaking too soon--there is still space on the line for more text, but it is breaking it. When I backspace the type trying to bring it up, it will do it, but when I add a word space back in, it jumps down to the next line.
It is not doing this with other styles I have set up. I tried changing the style to Adobe Single-line composer, but that didn't help.
(p.s. I'm a long-time Quark user who has been migrating over to InDesign)

  • Bullet lists

    Hello,
When I open a new document I only have these options available for bullet lists:
    None
    Bullet
    Harvard
    Legal
    Numbered List
However, when I open a Word document in Pages, I have 10 more options. Among them the possibility to create indented lists with different symbols for each indention. (The same goes for the Styles list - it has increased when I open a Word doc in Pages.)
My question is: If I can´t create such indented lists in a doc started in Pages, is there a way to save these extra options that appear when a Word doc is opened in Pages? So that they will appear in Pages in the future?
    Thanks for all your help.
    Brills.

    Hi, thanks for replying.
I was referring to the options that come up when I open the Styles drawer and have the "List Styles" show up there. Or if I click on the List icon on the top bar (but perhaps I put that there myself, I don´t remember). Anyway, when I go List in Inspector, do I then always have to manually set the indent level and bullet look? What I was trying to say was that when I open a Word doc in Pages, I already have lots of indented lists ready to use, and they show up under List Styles as well. I just don´t get it, how this works
    Thanks.

  • Unable to create numerical or bulleted list

Many thanks in advance for your attention.
    1. Unable to create a numerical or bulleted list in Apple Mail.
(To send an email with numerical of bulleted lists)
    2. Followed steps I read and saw in an Apple.com tip:
    3. I opened Mail.
    4. Selected "New Message"
    5. Then On Menu Bar - Selected "Format" and then the submenu - "Lists"
    6. But both options (numerical and bulleted) are greyed out.
Under Customize Mail Toolbar, there is no "Lists" option either.

    Hey,
For those interested, I believe I answered my own question myself.
There is one step the apple.com tip and other discussions seem to skip over.
    1. Your cursor has to be in the Body of the "New Message" for you to select a numbered or bulleted list option under "Format." Or to move "Lists" under Customize Toolbar to your toolbar. If your cursor isn't in the Body of the email, nothing appears.
    2. When you first open up a "New Message" your cursor (by default) is in the "To" box. That is why nothing was showing up for me (or was greyed out).

  • (Bug?) How to unindent an indented bulleted list

I have been trying to transition to Keynote 6.2 from version 5 and have found some "glitches" with the new interface, but one thing is particularly irritating:
If I create a bulleted list, and indent some items in the list, then hit return after the last item to add a new bullet, there doesn't appear to be a way to unindent the bullet.  The unindent buttton doesn't work (it is greyed out) and neither does OPT-TAB.
Has anyone else run into a problem like this?  I am not sure if this is a bug restricted to my custom template I use for work.

  • How to format bullet lists

So that bullets stand out visually, I prefer bullet lists indented, not flush with the existing paragraphs. Is there a way to modify bullet settings to automatically appear like the following?
    Appreciated.

On the Text panel, follow this screen shot for settings. You will want an after paragraph setting of 6 or 9 pt before you press return to start your bullets. That will give you a nice vertical standoff. You will want this after paragraph setting for each bullet item so that they too, have some breathing space. Tune the list indent, and text spacing from the bullet to your taste. When you have finished with the list, you may wish to set the after paragraph to 0 to resume normal sentence line space.
