Appearance of quark files

Hi,
At work my boss just got a new Mac Mini with Tiger 10.4.2. I have 10.3.8 Panther and there are a few computers still running OS 9. We have a server for all our files. On the new Mac Mini Quark 5 files are coming up with a strange black icon. I called Apple Support he told me to load OS 9 and Quark 5. I did but it doesn't make the icon go back to Quark and to open you have to change the extension to .qxd and then resave to Quark 6 to get an icon. When I access files on the server they show up as Quark 5 icons, so I don't know why we are having this problem. Is it a Tiger thing and is there anyway to get around this because we have over 3000 files to deal with. Thanks

Katherine, no, this isn't a Tiger thing. From the sound of it, you're seeing a generic icon which doesn't connect the Quark files with the application.
On the mini, try right-clicking on one of the Quark file icons and select 'open with' from the contexual menu that will drop down, click the 'Always Open With' check mark on the lower-left, then select 'other' at the bottom. Scroll down the application list until you find Quark (presumably Quark 6 which you want to use in OS X rather than 5 in OS 9) and click on that. Once you click Open, it will set all files with the same properties to open with Quark, and the icons should then change to a standard Quark document icon.

Help! I was working in Quark 5 and needed to insert a registered trademark symbol(which I couldn't remember the command for) so I hit what I believe was option A or S. A text box appeared and asked if I would like to save my work? I clicked yes and the program closed. When I rebooted I see nothing in the file.

    Hello mailman06,
This sounds like a case of lost file. There are a few things to try however.
When you say "you see nothing in the file" does that mean you find the file and the file is empty? I would try doing a search using Sherlock..and search by date. This sould show you files done on the day you were working on the day you made the changes. It is possible that the file was saved as another name. It sounds as if it may have saved as a differnet name. The date search should help. Look for Quark files edited on the date or near the date you last worked on it. Also ther is a slight chance that the file could have ended in the trash, chances are you have emptied the trash so that probably won't help.
I think the best hope is that the file was saved to a different location than where you are looking......HTH.........mGb...........Jim

I just tried it again and this time a different message showed up "The iPod 'name' cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found." I have no clue what folder it could be talking about.

I've tried resetting my phone, looking for the pics in the new 'deleted' folder. I tried forwarding the jpegs to sees if they'll appear in a new message (but turnout the phone won't let me forward these pics). Apple is trying to say it's the 30 day reason, but I know that is not the problem. ALl of my pics older than 30 days were viewable. It is the upgrade that screwed this up. Help! Important pics!

You can also use your PC mouse.
As for iPhoto, it sounds like you were trying to move files around in the library. That is a bib no-no in Aperture or iPhoto.

  • I can no longer burn a disc. The command to do so does not appear in my Files menu. All my recordings are 100% legal. I have installed a new version (it still looks the same), but that hasn't helped. I have done so before.

All my music is from legal sources (albums owned by me, others from iTunes), but the Burn Disc command does not appear in the File menu, and nothing I do helps. I downloaded a new version of iTunes, but it still loks the same and may just be the same. But the problem started long before I did that.

This did nothing. Where do I click on the playlist? As far as I have experienced, the playlist is a list of songs with ticks against them on the left. I can use the control key, but where do I point my cursor to select the playlist?
You don't even need to show the general Sidebar as suggested by others.
Select Playlists in the top buttons:
then control-click on the playlist you wish to burn in left column, e.g.:

I uploaded photos in .jpg format to my iPad, but now all of those photos appear as .ithmb files and cannot be opened, even on the thumbdrive they originated from. How do I get them back to .jpgs?

Sorry, should've mentioned some more information. I synced the ipad to the folder of photos. The original photos had file names like "_MG_4865.jpg" and after syncing the folder in Itunes, all files were now found in a folder called "iPod Photo Cache" which was filled with many folders with labels like "F23" etc. (There were ALOT of photos.) In those folders there are several files with names like "T343.ithmb". Not a .jpg to be found and I can't view any of the photos.

  • Old Quark files are now Unix Executable Files

I made hundreds of archive CD's with Mac's running OS 9 back in 1990's. They contain Quark files and .tif's. I've referred back to these CD's many many times over the years with no problems. My new iMac has the intel processor. I pop an archive CD in and all the files (with no extensions like "tif" or ".qkd" or ".eps") are now "Unix Executable Files" that won't open.
I simply add an extension to the images files (like ".tif") and they work. HOWEVER, it's not so easy with the Quark files. I add ".qkd" to the file name and it still remains a Unix file.
I launch Quark and try to open the file through the finder and it doesn't work. I took an archive CD to a friends house whose on a G5 and the CD worked properly with no extensions needed to be added.
So I figure the problem is with the Intel/PC based processor. I shouldn't have sold my old G5.
One forum claimed that a program called "File Buddy" did the trick for him. Does anyone have any other ideas other than me buying a non-Intel Mac.
I love our new iMacs but I need these archive CD's to work!
    Thanks

I automatically run OnyX once a week for maintenance, but it didn't help this situation.
Those chores won't reset the LaunchServices database. Go to the Maintenance heading and click on the Reset tab. Turn on the check box for "LaunchServices database" (all other check boxes off). Click the Reset radio button and then Execute. Restart your Mac.
OS X will automatically rebuild the database according to the applications on your hard drive, giving preference to Apple applications as they would be when you first install OS X. So if you have the Acrobat Reader set up to open PDF files, you'll have to do that again as they will be set back to Preview.
Actually it's .qxd not .qkd for Quark XPress file extensions.
That's it! I knew .qkd was wrong, but Quark 6.x won't show you the old extensions when you save a file, and I couldn't remember it (been using InDesign steadily for a while now).

  • View Quark File Previews in Adobe Bridge

I would like to have a way to preview Quark Files in Bridge. This would be useful for people who switch between Adobe and Quark products or who are migrating from Quark to Adobe products, or like me have taken over a position where I use InDesign, and the person before me used Quark. It would increase my efficiency greatly I believe :-)
    Thank You!

Is Bridge set up to store the ACR modifications to those XMP files? Only then it can update the preview right after working on it. Else you need to refresh the preview cache.

  • Quark file will not open in InDesign

I'm having trouble with one Quark file that will not open in InDesign. It came in a package with several other files that are working just fine.
    I'm getting this popup.
It is not open in an application, the file format is exactly the same as the other files I have (.qxd), and I'm not sure about the plugin.
    Any ideas?

Either have it saved back or buy this: http://markzware.com/products/q2id/

  • Hi can anyone help with a mac that had magnet put on it. I turned it on and then off but a white screen appears with a file with a question mark on it?

Hi can anyone help with a mac that had magnet put on it. I turned it on and then off but a white screen appears with a file with a question mark on it?

File icon with ? mark on it means it can't read from the hard drive. The hard drive is now wiped or bad. If just wiped then you will need to reinstall your operating system, OS X. If bad you will need to replace the drive.
Start with booting the computer from the OS X install DVD that came with your system. If the Mac came with Lion Pre-Installed then you use the Lion internet recovery system to reinstall (Hold down Command+r keys or Command+Option+r keys to boot the computer from over the internet to the Lion recovery HD system).
    Good Luck.

  • Name of files do not appear in the files section

I've been using Adobe Audition 3.0 for three years now and it has been FANTASTIC.  (on a 3 year old Dell with the Vista OS).
However, something quirky happened this morning that is frustrating....when I drag an audio file onto my workstation, like I always do, the actual wave appears on my timeline, BUT, the name of the file  no longer appears in the files section to the left of the workstation.
I've re-started my compter several times to no avail.  Has anybody else ever experienced this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!   I have an impending deadline due for a large project  and this sudden disappearance of file names has rendered my Audition virtually unusable.
    Thanks again.

There are some buttons right at the bottom of the Files window under the Sort By box that allow you to show or hide different file types. Perhaps one of those has become unclicked.

  • Finding old Quark files to delete

    Hello,
We currently have a server that has been having stuff transferred to it since 1997. We switched to InDesign a while back and now I'm looking to make some more room on the server. What I'm hoping to do is do a search to find all Quark files from 2005 and before so I can delete them all. I don't want to find artwork from before that as some of it is actually still in use. Logos/headshots/photos etc... Any help on searching for these would be grateful. Thank you.
    Randy

Thanks Baby Boomer. My problem is there are thousands of these files all with various names, none of which use an extension such as .qxd
    Sample Names:
    redington 1/16
    Amoco 1/8
    Mcdonalds 012599
So when I do a search, I'm not sure what exactly to search for. It seems like the regular finder has more options than spotlight does as far as date range and stuff but I can't figure out how to locate these files in particular.

  • Quark Files seen as unix executables after upgrade

Upgraded to Tiger from 10.3.9 (Panther). We store all work files on another mac (as a server). During upgrade (using archive and install) ran out of disk space. Had to reboot in OS9. Moved the Previous system folder that had been created to another partition. Then deleted from main drive I was installing to to make more disk space (G4 has 3 partitions).
Then restared with Tiger disk and did an upgrade install. Also ran all current updates. Only way I can seem to connect to server is by using Go>Connect to server>typing in TCP/IP address (afp://192.....). The server is still running 10.3.9. (Can't seem to see the other computers on network any other way. If I do see the icons for other computers, they only show up as alias, which when clicked say can't find file).
When I connect, I seem to see all files (inlcuding some hidden, or at least they weren't seen before the upgrade). I also see all my quark files as unix executable files (icon looks like terminal window). I tried to do a get info and change what they open with to Quark, but it wouldn't let me. Haven't had a chance to repair permissions yet, but if that doesn't work does anyone have any other suggestions?
(Note: files on server are perfectly fine and seen by other computers on the network correctly)
Also why when I connect to server am I seeing hidden files?
Since this is a work computer I won't be able to try things until Monday, but please post any possible solutions and what may be causing this.
PS. I still have the Previous system folder on the other drive. Also have Drive Genius and Disk Warrior

    3. Deleting the
    com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore,
    com.apple.LaunchServices-014501 and
    csstorecom.apple.LaunchServices.plist then
    restarting
That one should have worked. Did you wait until restarting to delete the trash?
    6. Assigning the files to open with another app like
TextWrangler then changing it back again
Did you use the Change All option when you did it? This should have worked too.
I'm afraid I'm at a loss here. You did say it shows being linked to TextEdit in the Info box and opening in that when double clicked? Have you tried resaving the document to see if the right icon shows up? Bit of a hassle though if you have a lot of them.
Did you try repairing permissions or using Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory?
One option is you can download CandyBar:
    http://www.panic.com/candybar/
This is a hassle but I have no other possible solution: When you open it click on App Extras then drag TextEdit to where it says to drag app. It will show all the icons the app uses, change the main one to something else, anything at all. Click apply, it will say to restart the Finder to change the icons but you really have to log out then log back in. Check if the files all have whatever icon you placed in there. If you don't like that icon open CandyBar again and drag TextEdit to it then just drag the icon you used out of the box so it goes back to default then log out and in again and see if all TExtEdit files are back to normal.

  • Quark files show as unix executable files.

I have a strange issue. This is an all mac enviornment. The iMac's are running 10.4.11, and Quark express 6.0 One of the iMac's show the quark files as unix executable files. All of the other mac's can open the files without any issue.
On the iMac that has an issue, some of the folders show up as unix executable files as well. Also, there is a network share that is a log in item that should auto mount when the user logs in, it no longer mounts automatically. The only way to mount the share is by navigating through finder.
I was able to open one of the quark files by using open, then save the file using save as. this appended the file extension. I also enabled file extensions in finder, and manually appended the extension and they still would not associate with Quark. The file I did a save as does associate with Quark but it is the only one.
I repaired disk permissions and that did not help. Anyone have any ideas on this one?

I also couldn't find the download link for xsupport on the link you provided.
Looks like they have changed their business model. I just copied the URL out of the aboutbox of my copy of the Xsuppport toll but didn't crosscheck it.
Does that give any indication on what the problem is?
Not really, perhaps a corrupted or unreadable (by permission) .DS_Store file in the folder where your Xpress files reside, but then again that should affect other clients as well.
    Which leads to the question:
When some clients have the correct mapping document <-> Quark Xpress and one (or more) other(s) don't, do you connect with different users to the server or are the users always the samr but the connection made from different machines?
If youuse different users to connect, then the problem very like is on the server side (addess rights, etc). If the same user has different results on different machines, the problem's most likely a local one. In which case you coud try all of ManiMenu's clean and deep clean actions.
