Appearance using Yosemite

I've just recently migrated to Yosemite from Snow Leopard and I don't like the way things look on my Samsung monitor.   Specifically, the contrast between white and black is poor, eg. in System Preferences, the icon for the Mouse is barely visible as it's white on white with a thin black outline.  The lines between sections in Mail and in Safari are too faint.  The box around fields where you enter text is barely visible.   The monitor is the same.  I tried a different monitor and it didn't help.
I've played around with System Preferences, etc. to try and get back to the more pleasing appearance that I had under Snow Leopard to no avail.  I've tried adjusting the monitor contrast, color, etc. and that didn't help with the problem and made colours look worse.  Changing the Appearance for Button, Menus and Windows (in System Preferences) doesn't seemm to differ regardles of choosing Blue or Graphite.  The highlight colors in System Preferences appear faint but in the actual highlighted fields they are much brighter.
One difference from before (other than Yosemite versus Snow Leopard) is that the interface to the monitor (which has a DVI connection) is using HDMI whereas before I used the Display Port.  The interface cable is an Apple connector in both cases.   Could the Display Port offer a solution?   This may seem like a minor issue but it is frustrating.

Thanks for the help.
I bought an iMac with Yosemite on it a few months ago and the problem only started in the past couple weeks. If it is related to Yosemite, then it is specific to 10.10.3, since I updated to that recently.
I don't have any other plugins installed for Illustrator. I've never heard of Pushbullet.
I did try rebuilding the preferences folder already.
I'm currently rebuilding the template file I use for my maps, revising a version of it that I was using before this problem arose. If that makes a difference then I might be able to point to that file as being the problem. We'll see...

    Hello,
Hope someone can help.  Downloaded EMOJI FREE onto my iMac using Yosemite as the OS.  It's there under my applications, but can't open it.  I love to use the corny emoticons and thought this freebie would add to my emails.  Any suggestions- anyone?  Thank you- Laurel from Nokomis, FL

Obviously you found my user tip/posts on corrupt AppleWorks preferences although you said "preference file." There are four preference files in two different places. Take another look at my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for the file names & locations.
However, the spinning beach ball you see in AppleWorks has nothing to do with your Intel Mac or corrupt preferences but is the most complained about bug in AppleWorks 6 - known as the "Recent Items bug." The same problem will affect any Mac no matter what processor or OS. There are three user tips in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items.

You need to contact the developer/manufacturer directly to determine if their product is compatible w/Yosemite.  It is not listed on their system requirement website:
    Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
    Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard*
Note: ArchiCAD 17 is the last version of ArchiCAD to support Mac OS X 10.6
Only case insensitive file-system volumes are supported.

I have Elements 13 (I have the hard copy) installed on my iMac using Yosemite. I do all my iPhoto work on an external drive where I have copied my iPhoto Library, can I also install Elements 13 on my external harddrive or drag Elements 13 over from my iMac so that I can do work with Elements 13 via the exteranl hard drive? Thanks tb

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?

You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.

  • My Photos are not showing up in IPhoto 9.6.  I am using Yosemite.

My IPhoto says it is 9.6. I am using Yosemite. When I clicked on IPhoto in my dock, it comes up, but there are no photos. Same if I click in Applications. I was able to bring in 1 event and 9 photos by highlighting them, but now I don't remember where I found them. And I don't want to do that for 5,000 photos anyway.  Please help!
    Thanks

I'm sorry, I guess I don't know the correct terminology and I don't understand how things work.
When I click on Seagate HD on my desktop, and then  All My Files, it says I have over 8,000 images. I see my pictures there.  If I go down the list and click on Pictures, I see the list of 1125 items with names, dates and sizes. If I go down two more on the list to Applications and click on IPhoto I see Oct. 21,2014 and 1.7 GB, and can see the 23 pictures and 2 events that I have moved there today.
If I click Time Machine and open Preferences it shows Seagate HD as my Backup Disk.  If I enter Time Machine the only reference to IPhoto in the list is iphotoqt.pdf  Aug. 2, 2012.  If I go down to Pictures there it shows the same list of 1125 Items as the Seagate.
If I launch IPhoto while holding the option key I get one option: IPhoto Library (Default).
Is there something else I need to find for you to help me?
    Thanks so much!

  • I am using Yosemite.  I have spam e-mail showing up continuously in my junk folder.  (same ones I deleted)  What can I do to resolve this matter?

I have an i-mac and using Yosemite.  (1) spam e-mails keep returning after being deleted.

How can I resolve these issues?

The scanner works fine with mountain lion but when downloaded yosemite it opens but will not continue to perform -- cuts out. yosemite is  10.10.  believe the scanner is 10.7.

You need a Thunderbolt or mini DisplayPort to composite converter like this one:

Yikes, unless you can find one for much less than that, I'd put than kind of money toward a TV with HDMI connections.

  • How to send computer screen to sleep whilst watching Apple TV via airplay using Yosemite?

Does anybody know how to send computer screen to sleep whilst watching Apple TV via airplay using Yosemite? I've tried the hot key Shift + Control + Eject, but that sends the TV's screen as well as my iMac's screen to sleep at the same time. I don't want the 2 screens playing at the same time - I would like to send the computer's screen to sleep whilst the Apple TV continue's to play/mirror. Hoping someone knows how to do this?

Thanks Vazandrew for your detailed explanation. I think you've answered my question in that what I'm wanting to do is not possible because it is mirroring in its entirety, unless it is being done via iTunes.
I live in hope that Apple (can in-time) organise the same screen sleep capability that operates via iTunes for people wanting to stream regular online TV via iMac!
I would like to mark my question as answered by you, but had already checked the helpful star before going to mark the answered check mark. Didn't realise you could only mark one or the other…with no editing function.
Your explanation as to what is going on with the mirroring was much appreciated, as I couldn't figure out why the short cut keys worked sometimes (via iTunes) and not others (via regular streamed online TV).

    Hi, edward.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are having a display issue with your MacBook Pro on your TV.  I would need a little more information regarding how you are connecting your device and what content is being displayed to provide a better answer.  However, here is the best troubleshooting resource to go through when experiencing these symptoms.

  • What is the advantage of using Yosemite on my iMac over 10.9.5

What is the advantage of using Yosemite over Lion on my iMac?  Is it any faster, slower or what?

Before upgrading to a new operating system, here are a couple considerations:
    1.  If you are having problems with your current system, full version upgrades
will make them worse.  Fix all issues before making the upgrade.
    2.  Make sure that any third party hardware is compatible with the new operating
system, i.e. drivers available to support the OS.
    3.  The hidden cost item of needing to upgrade apps to work on the new OS.
If your any of your favorite or mission critical applications are not compatible,
expect the possibility of needing to purchase upgrades of those apps so that
they will work on the new OS.
    4.  If you rely on your computer for your livelihood,  be absolutely sure that you
have a backup strategy and plan to quickly recover should there be any issues.
There has been many a complaint on this forum that new OS upgrades have
have ruined their business and had no recovery strategy in place.  Besides,
anyone relying on a computer for their livelihood is REQUIRED to have such
a strategy in place regardless of OS upgrades as anything can happen at
         any time.
    5.  If everything is working fine and dandy for you currently, you need to ask if
any of the new features of an OS of any use to you.  If not, then perhaps
a "don't fix it if it ain't broke" philosophy is what you should follow.
