Appending a blocklist to /etc/hosts
Is it possible to append a blocklist (er... redirectlist) to /etc/hosts somehow?
For example, mvps has been supplying a very nice list of known parasite websites for years. Basically, it just uses 127.0.0.1 to redirect known bad websites so they don't load. It's a nice system-wide method to block them. I have been pasting their list into my /etc/hosts but am wondering if I can someone call it as I do in bash scripts.
For example, this doesn't work, but you get idea:
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost novelty
192.168.1.1 router
192.168.1.2 inky
192.168.1.3 blinky
. /etc/hostsmvps # try to load the mvps redirect list

sed -r -e 's:^([0-9]{1,3}\.){3}[0-9]{1,3}:0.0.0.0:' /tmp/hosts.txt > /tmp/hosts.new.txt
tail -n+`grep -nF 'start of lines' /tmp/hosts.new.txt | cut -d':' -f1` /tmp/hosts.new.txt > /tmp/hosts.txt
# Write this new list over the system hosts list. MVPS' line feeds
# are \n\r; we will be getting rid of those dirty carriage returns.
# We'll first write the user's hosts head, then the black list.
cat /etc/hosts.local > /etc/hosts
cat /tmp/hosts.txt | tr -d "\r" >> /etc/hosts
rm /tmp/hosts*.txt
# This is the end!
Thanks for the script, I actually wrote one very similar to yours but then thought I'd ask about sourcing it like a bash script does...

Hosts-update: automatically append the mvp blocklist to /etc/hosts
This util written by wintervenom has actually been in the AUR for going on 2 years now.
What it does:
Updates /etc/hosts with the mvps blocklist to prevent thousands of parasites, hijackers and unwanted adware/spyware/privacy websites from working.
Operation is trivial:
1) Edit /etc/hosts.local to match the hostname of your system and adjust the domainname as needed. Also add any hosts that you wish to keep i.e. other PCs on your network.
2) Run /usr/bin/update_hosts as root which will append /etc/hosts.local to the mvps blocklist and apply some post processing writing the final file to /etc/hosts automatically.
3) (Optional) Add a cronjob under root crontab at some interval to keep your /etc/hosts fresh.

EDIT: I can't remember if it pulls from the same urls as pgl does but you can certainly modify the code to do it.

Hi all,
Please help sorting my terminal, I'm having problem with my iTune everytime I want to update or restore my ipad or iphone, it keep saying "this device isn't eligible for the requested build"
Now I tried to edit the etc/hosts using the Terminal, but suddenly all the script
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
are all gone i think i accidentally deleted it. so what I did was I copy this from forum and paste it to terminal.
But i'm having problem how to save it, when I press ^O it goes like this:
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
File Name to Write: etc/hosts
^G Get Help ^T To Files M-M Mac Format M-P Prepend
^C Cancel M-D DOS Format M-A Append M-B Backup File
and I dont know how to save it. when I press ^X doesn't save at all.
Please Help me.
Thank you in advance.Well lets make things easier, get out of Terminal by just Quiting it or Force Quit.
Download the free TextWrangler here
http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/download.html
Now under the File Menu >Open File by Name
/etc/hosts
It should look like this, if not then just copy and paste it in.
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
Now save it and give it your admin password and that's it. Easy as pie.
Terminal's pico and vi editing programs have a lot to be desired, but serve the basic puposes.
With Terminal you need to enter
sudo pico /etc/hosts
then enter your admin password to access a system file.
It can only be done via a Admin account, however with TextWrangler not only is it much easier, you can also access system files from a Standard user account.
the two lines
#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
You have there are "commented out" with the "#" symbol, basically your telling the computer to "ignore this line"
Why you think messing with your /etc/hosts file is going to solve your primary issue with iTunes/iPad/iPhone is beyond me.
Did you ever think that perhaps your two devices are too old for the "requested build"? -
Sudo nano etc/hosts can't save

What's this "sudo dscacheutil -flushcache"???
Why show this "when the system is booting. Do not change this entry."????
Can i add what i want between 127.0.0.1 localhost and 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost?
Why is saying i can't change the file, why can i unprotect? Explain me.

SCAN LISTENER runs from only one node at a time from /etc/hosts !
Dear all ,
Recently I have to configure RAC in oracle 11g(r2) in AIX 6.1 . Since in this moment it is not possible to configure DNS, so I dont use SCAN ip into the DNS/GNS, I just add the SCAN ip into the host file like :
cat /etc/hosts
SCAN 172.17.0.22
Got the info from : http://www.freeoraclehelp.com/2011/12/scan-setup-for-oracle-11g-release211gr2.html#ORACLE11GR2RACINS
After configuring all the steps of RAC , Every services are ok except SCAN_LISTENER . This listener is up only one node at a time . First time when I chek it from node1 , it shows :
srvctl status scan_listener
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is enabled
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is running on node dcdbsvr1
now when I relocate it from node 2 using
"srvctl relocate scan -i 1-n DCDBSVR2" , then the output shows :
srvctl status scan_listener
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is enabled
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is running on node dcdbsvr2
Baring these , we have to try to relocate it from the node2 by the following way, then it shows the error :
srvctl relocate scan -i 2 -n DCDBSVR2
resource ora.scan2.vip does not exists
Now my question , How can I run the SCAN and SCAN_LISTENER both of the NODES ?
Here is my listener file (which is in the GRID home location) configuration :
Listener File OF NODE1 AND NODE 2:
==================================
ENABLE_GLOBAL_DYNAMIC_ENDPOINT_LISTENER_SCAN1=ON
ENABLE_GLOBAL_DYNAMIC_ENDPOINT_LISTENER=ON
LISTENER_SCAN1 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC) (KEY = LISTENER_SCAN1)
ADR_BASE_LISTENER_SCAN1 = /U01/APP/ORACLE
2)
Another issue , when I give the command : " ifconfig -a " , then it shows the SCAN ip either node1 or node2 . suppose if the SCAN ip is in the node1 , and then if I run the "relocate" command from node2 , the ip goes to the Node 2 . is it a correct situation ? advice plz ... ...
thx in advance .. ...

Edited by: shipon_97 on Jan 10, 2012 7:31 AMAfter configuring all the steps of RAC , Every services are ok except SCAN_LISTENER . This listener is up only one node at a time . First time when I chek it from node1 , it shows :If I am not wrong and after looking at the document you sent, you will be able to use only once scan in case you use /etc/host file and this will be up on only one node where you added this scan entry in /etc/hosts file.
Now my question , How can I run the SCAN and SCAN_LISTENER both of the NODES ?Probably you can't in your case, you might run only one i think and on one node only
srvctl status scan_listener
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is enabled
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is running on node dcdbsvr1
now when I relocate it from node 2 using
"srvctl relocate scan -i 1 -n DCDBSVR2" , then the output shows :

srvctl relocate scan -i 2 -n DCDBSVR2
resource ora.scan2.vip does not exists
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Since you have only one scan, you can't relocate "2". So ise "1" instead here also

Adding the /etc/host.deny file like linux in solaris 10.
Dears,
I need to add a file which will works like the file of /etc/hosts.deny of Linux in Solaris.
If it is possible in the same manner please let me know that, and if it need some other trick to deny a specific host to access the system please tell me the way to do that.
Eagerly waiting to hear from you.
BR//
Sohel.IPfilter can deny a specific IP address access to the host - enable IPFilter with svcadm and edit the /etc/ipf/ipf.conf file to add the IP to block. An example could be:
block in log quick on bnx0 proto tcp from 192.168.1.5/32 to any
I use IPfilter to pass and block all sorts of specific IP addresses as well as block/allow specific ports (like only specific hosts can use port 22, ssh). -
The new entries made in /etc/hosts file is not picked up by Weblogic.
Hi All,
I have come across a scenario where i have changed the IP address of a particular host name (which was already present in etc/hosts) to point to a new IP address.
After i did this change, when i do a telnet test to the same hostname, i can see it is getting connected to the new IP to which i changed. But my service which is deployed on weblogic 10.0 still keeps sending requests to the old IP which i commented in the etc/hosts file instead of the new IP address.
My question is will weblogic cache the data in etc/hosts file somewhere?
Thanks in anticipation..
MadhuApplication deployed on weblogic server will pick the IP address of the server on which the application is deployed .
IP address or listen address for weblogic server can be configured in 3 different ways :
Listen Address : Blank --- This means that the server will listen to all the interfaces available on the Machine .
Listen Address : IP address or Hostname --- The server will listen only to the specified IP address or the hostname .
Listen Address : : localhost --- The server will be listening only on localhost address and will not be accessible remotely .
Please check what it the listen address specified at you end.
Thanks,

Network-profiles (1) and /etc/hosts
Hi everyone,
i've got a few network-profiles, especially in one network I have to use a static ip to connect to the internet. The only entry in the /etc/hosts which works correctly - without any error messages - for me, is
192.168.0.99 localhost.localdomain myhost
If I use something like 127.0.0.1 in front and simply add my hostname at the end, I can't connect with the Inet, unfortunately. I did not test it, but I'm pretty sure, that this host configuration won't work in any other network, where I get a dynamic IP from the DHCP. Is there a possibility to write the content of the /etc/hosts with netcfg, like the /etc/resolv.conf for example?
MfG SkitBecause you didn't specify what localhost was in your hosts file. It only knows of localhost.localdomain(does not imply 'localhost') and acer being the loopback.
I think he understood that.
'localhost' is universally understood as the loopback.
this is some kind of 'magic' answer isn't it? the resolving doesn't come out as a miracle... and that is IMHO what needs explanation.
his computer alone doesn't (obviously) get it because sure, it's not set. now what 'magic' makes it known when a cable is plugged in? the computer tries to reslove locally (via /etc/hosts), fails at it, and then asks the dns server about it. so I reckon the dns server is instructed on replying '127.0.0.1' for a 'localhost' hostname request. why so? because dns servers have an option to look at their local /etc/host for resolving before delegating to bigger servers, so the dns server certainly has localhost matching 127.0.0.1 in his /etc/host, and blindly replies accordingly, oblivious to the fact that he is replying about his 'own' 127.0.0.1 to someone else.

In the command line how do I find the etc/host file? is there one?
I am trying to work remotely and use our lotus notes system (which is from a windows based server) but I have to connect to the mail server and our IT person wants to find the equivalent of the Windows host file or host table . is there such a file? we went here
http://linux.die.net/man/5/hosts
hosts(5) - Linux man page
Name
hosts - The static table lookup for host names
Synopsis
/etc/hosts
thanksSince you're using a Macintosh, quit reviewing linux stuff. These, when entered in the Terminal app (inside /Applications/Utilities/) should point you in the right direction:
*cat /etc/hosts*
details in:
*man hosts*
FWIW, you should search the Unix forum (or post your query there) under OS X Technologies. -
Oracle 11gR2 RAC VM and SCAN and DNS and /etc/hosts (two) setup questions
Hi,
I am looking forward to setting up two Oracle 11gR2 RAC instances
on my Oracle VM test machine.
I plan on using the Oracle 11gR2 RAC VM template.
I want the final Oracle 11gR2 RAC instances to have SCAN that uses DNS.
The DNS will be pre-installed in the JeOS.
My first simple question about the setup is the following.
In my DNS name file, for example,
/var/named/chroot/var/named/milkyway.univ.db
do I need to provide the racnode1 and racnode2 information,
for example,
# DNS name file (snippet)
myjeos IN A 192.168.1.150
racnode1 IN A 192.168.1.161
racnode1-vip IN A 192.168.1.163
racnode2 IN A 192.168.1.162
racnode2-vip IN A 192.168.1.164
rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.131
rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.132
rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.133
Or, can I just provide only the rac-scan information
# DNS name file alternate (snippet)
myjeos IN A 192.168.1.150
rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.131
rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.132
rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.133
What I am getting at is the following.
Within the install process, will racnode1, racnode1-vip, racnode2,
and racnode2-vip host names and their IP address be written
to the RAC instances /etc/hosts files? (So I should not bother
to put them in the DNS name file like '# DNS name file alternate (snippet)'?)
Or, should I put the racnode and racnode-vip host names and IP addresses
in the DNS name file like '# DNS name file (snippet)'?
The second question is the following.
Are the cluster name and the scan name allowed to be different?
Currently, I would plan them to be different,
for example, rac-cluster and rac-scan.
Or, are they required to be the same,
for example, rac-cluster and rac-cluster.
Thank you.
AIMAIM wrote:
do I need to provide the racnode1 and racnode2 information,
Or, can I just provide only the rac-scan information You need to provide all of it in DNS, because other hosts in your network will need to be able to resolve all of the normal, VIP and SCAN addresses for your RAC nodes. We write this data out to /etc/hosts just to reduce the amount of round-trip DNS requests the cluster nodes make for themselves.
Are the cluster name and the scan name allowed to be different? They can be different. -
Editing etc\hosts file on windows xp for apps. problem post installation.
Hi all,
I was able to install 11.5.10.2 apps on my win xp prof machine. During that process I had to edit the etc/hosts file in windows directory as a work around for that domain name field during installation. Also added the primary DNS suffix as 'suneel.com' . I gave the domain name as 'suneel.com' during installation. The RapidWiz is taking localhost as the system name and referring to this system as localhost.suneel.com, though the actual system name is 'websoft-xp' .
The host file on Apps machine has the following entries:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost.suneel.com suneel.com
127.0.0.1 websoft-xp.suneel.com
So when I connect to apps login server from other systems in lan, I've to edit their hosts file and add an entry for localhost.suneel.com to point to its ip address or else the apps throws an error after logging in as operations/welcome using a different url say 192.168.1.4:8000 . Is there a way to get around this issue?
More over I'm not able connect to VIS db from other systems. The oracle clients give an error 'No listner' at this address. (The original listener was listening at localhost.suneel.com:1521). So I tried to create a new listerner from Net Manager that actually listens at websoft-xp (the real system name) but it throws me an error 'A valid log file is required' while saving the network configuration and prevents me from saving the network configuration.
Did I do something wrong with the hosts file during installation or did i miss any entries in that file thats causing this? Any solutions for the above problems will be appreciated?
Thanks

suneelgvWell I tried that option but for some reason it didn't work for me. It kept giving the tns:connection closed error. Then I searched in metalink and found this note : Note:333158.1
It suggested setting tcp.validnode_checking = no
in sqlnet.ora. in
F:\oracle\visdb\9.2.0\network\admin\VIS_websoft-xp
And it works. Hope this helps someone facing a similar problem. Good luck.
BTW how do I run autoconfig?
Thanks,

Blocking Ad servers via etc/host file not working
In Snow Leopard I add a list of ad servers and direct them to 127.0.0.1 via the /ect/host file.
I've configured the host file on my mac mini server and it doesn't work.
i just want to block ads when using browsers ON the Mini.
How can I achieve this?Yeah; that's an old-time Windows and Unix hack.
There are ad-blocking extensions for all major web browsers, and those are easier to manage and maintain.
Off the top, I'd have to check the search order to see if I was getting a response from remote DNS or from /etc/hosts here.
If you're running a Mac OS X Server box, you're hopefully also running DNS services, and if you're running DNS services, then that's going to be where this hackery gets implemented. Add bogus zones. And if DNS gets an answer from its cache, I wouldn't tend to expect it to go read /etc/hosts (for performance reasons), for that matter.
There may well be an ad-blocking DNS server around you can forward queries to, too; I haven't looked for that.
If you make changes to your local /etc/hosts setup, try issuing the following to clear the cache:
dnscacheutil -flushcache
I'd recommend installing an ad-blocker. /etc/hosts is an old-school approach and can end up causing weirdnesses on errors, particularly if your box is (also) a DNS server for your LAN. (Also realize that Apple isn't documenting the /etc/hosts file in the Mac OS X Server 10.6 networking manual.) -

I have the corresponding entries in the /etc/hosts file on the machine for these
host names. The telnet and a standalone java client can resolve these host names
but not weblogic. Can anybody give some hints to fix this issue? The same code
and same version of the weblogic work fine on other two machines.
I have attached the application log file for the exact error messages.
Many thanks ...
