Appending Metadata without losing keywords?

I am trying to append some metadata on some RAW Canon files, 1D Mark III, that had has some light keywording already done do it before I appended the metadata. When I do this, append the metadata, I lose the all keywords. Is there a work around for this?
I am using the most recently updated Mac version of CS4, on Mac 10.4.11, MacPro 2.66 Ghz Dual Core, with 8 GBs of Ram.
Thanks,

Let me describe my workflow,
I use Adobe Photodwonloader for ingestion files. In this app I have set :
- the folder where the files have to go to
- a new rename wit yyyymmdd and a sequence number (keep original filename in
metadata)
- convert to DNG
- back up original Raw files to a separate disk
- and adding a copyright template to the metadata.
Hitting the OK button once does this for all the files. After ingestion and
caching in Bridge all the files now have a basic template in it
The files I want to have metadata written to ( in my case the IPTC fields
for description, date created and place - state and country are also in the
template and only now and then the state has to be altered).
For this I use the content en metadata panel.
In Bridge prefs I have set the metadata fields that are important for me to
visible with a checkmark. This results in a very small number of lines in
this panel. I select the files that need the same metadata and point mouse
or pen tool to the description field.
In here I type, when ready I hit the tab key that brings me to the next
visible field, and so on. At last I hit the enter key in the numeric keypad
and I'm done for the next session without any pop up menu in the way.
If you select an other file to add metadata without hitting the enter key
you will be prompted with the pop up message. However, there is a checkbox
in it that says: don't show again
Hope this helps for you.
S there a faster way to change metadata without affecting the keywords?

  • Importing photos from ZoomBrowser into iPhoto without losing keywords and star ratings

I have been using Canon's ZoomBrowser EX on my Windows Vista laptop. I have just bought a MacBook Air running Lion. I would like to import all of my photos to iPhoto, but when I do this I lose all of the keywords and star ratings I have associated with my many photos. Is there any way to import the photos into iPhoto while retaining the keywords and star ratings so that I can use them in iPhoto? Doing this manually would be impractical due to the large number of photos involved.
    Thanks.

    Keywords:
Iphoto can certainly import them if they are written to the correct fields of the standard metadata. They key question is can your Windows app write them to the files?
    Ratings
There's no real way to share ratings via standard metadata, but if you can write the keywods, then you can quickly tag the pics with simple keywords (1star, 2star) and when imported to iPhoto recreate your rating system.
So, the question is really about your existing software and what it can do.

  • Resize without losing tags (date, rating, keywords, etc.)?

It seems the only way to resize photos is to export and then re-import. However, doing so seems to destroy all of the tags, including date, time, rating, keywords, and descriptions. This is a pain since I've spent a lot of time adding this data.
Is there any other way to resize without losing this information? Thanks in advance...

Scans, I'm afraid, don't have Exif or IPTC metadata.
IF disk space is an issue you can run a Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Export iPhoto library to a different computer, without losing the keywords

i have about 3000 family photos on my computer, how do i export my entire library to another computer without losing the keywords/ratings?
i am trying to copy the my iPhoto library into the iPhoto library on my dads mac pro
    cheers

quit iPhoto on both computers and connect the two computers together (network, firewire target mode, etc) - if the target computer has an iPhoto library that you want to save rename it (Dads iphoto library maybe) ad drag the iPhoto library form the pictures folder (the default location) of your computer to the pictures folder of your dad's - to switch between two libraries on a Mac launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and use the select library option - or download iPhoto Library Manager to do it on the fly - and to be able to easily move photos between libraries

  • Need help understanding appending metadata and keywords

It seems too good to be true--appending the copyright and keywords to multiple images at a time in Bridge. We started doing it on a server volume of images and it seems to work ... as long as you are logged on to the computer that appended the data as the user that appended the data. Log on to the server from another computer as another user and it's all gone. I thought the metadata was stored in the image when you append it. Why are the keywords and metadata user specific? Are we doing something wrong? It seems a huge waste of time, if the metadata isn't general to anyone searching the photo volume.
Bridge CS3 on Mac OS 10.4x, working on a Windows server volume.

There is a command to Build and Export the cache, I just don't remember offhand where it is in CS3. I'm working on CS4 right now and don't have time to quit and launch CS3. Hope you can find it.

  • Remove parent Keyword without losing the children

    As an example
I set up a keyword set where I had
company > department > PR or maintenance or IT etc.
I don't really need to have dept in there can I remove it without losing
the department names which I do want
I have run into this and had just rewritten but that seems wasteful
Also can I write a list of keywords and add them without doing each individually ?
    thanks

Sure. Drag the children you want to where you want them and then delete what you don't need.

  • HT1229 Can I reinstall iPhoto without losing my photos?

With Yosemite ,when I opened iPhoto it says it has to be upgraded, then when I do that it says it has to Rebuild the Thumbnail caches I let it go all day but nothing happens . I've tried hitting the command + option key when starting iPhoto same problem. So I want to know if I can reinstall iPhoto without losing my photos?

So I want to know if I can reinstall iPhoto without losing my photos?
You photos are in the iphoto Library and not in the iPhoto application, so reinstalling iPhoto will not delete your photos.  But the problem seems to be with your iPhoto Library and not with iPhoto.
I've tried hitting the command + option key when starting iPhoto same problem.
How dis you try that? To run the First Aid tools you need to keep holding down the keys when launching iPhoto until you are seeing the First Aid panel. Did you do it this way?
If you tried the First Aid Tools without success, rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager as described by Trence Devlin:
uprgraded to yosemite all good but iphoto crashes every time I attempt to upgrade the photo library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Download iPhoto Library Manager here:  http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

  • I duplicated a picture and now iPhoto (11) is cloning that picture replacing all the other photos and only when I click directly on them I can see the real picture! How can I solve the problem without losing any saved picture? Shall I re-install? Thanx

I duplicated a picture selecting CMD and D but, suddenly, iPhoto (latest version '11) started cloning that picture and replacing all the other photos with it.
Only when I click directly on one photo I can open it and see the real picture it is.
But the preview is always the duplicated one...
I tryed to duplicate another picture just to see if it turned out ok but the only changement was the duplicated picture!
I started repeating the second duplicated one instead of the previous one but my issue remained the same.
So, how can you help me to solve this problem without losing any saved picture?
    Shall I re-install iPhoto completely?
Thank you very very much in advance!!

As Larry says, restoring the back up is the fastest and best solution. Otherwise:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Bridge cs3 mac 2.1.1.9 will not append metadata

I've been using Bridge CS3 for a long time now on my iMac 2Ghz Core Duo (Tiger OS X 10.4.11) with 2 GB of RAM
I have been using the same metadata template for a year, and have updated to Bridge 2.1.1.9
Starting today, whenever I try to append metadata to a 1.6 Gb folder of images (Nikon D300 jpg's), I get the error message "There was a problem writing metadata to...."
I have held the option key at Bridge startup , purged the folder cache, and checked the "Use Software rendering" option in preferences
I have tried appending metadata to a smaller folder with the same results
I use Bridge every day to tag and keyword photos - please help me to get this working again

I split the files into 2 folders and tried to append metadata on a folder that contained 99 files totaling 568MB
    That did not work
I removed the file that was first reported as "problem writing metadata..", purged the folder cache and tried again - the error occurred on the very next file numerically
The error always seems to start with the highest-numbered file in the folder
I have also tried replace metadata and that does not work
I have also tried to enter metadata manually and then apply it to all the images in a folder - that does not work either
Maybe this 2.1.1.9 update has broken metadata somehow?

  • How to reinstall iPhoto 5 without losing library photos/albums?

I had a hard freeze while copying photos from iPhoto 5 to desktop. After forced shutdown and restart, every time I try to open iPhoto it opens briefly and then shuts down, asking me if I want to send a report to Apple. Tried installing 5.04 update (no problems) but again, on trying to open iPhoto, it immediately closes.
Can someone advise me the steps to go through to "uninstall" what may be a corrputed iPhoto program and reinstall (I have the iLife CD/DVD install discs) without losing my library photos, albums, etc?

    Hi bovie,
It is not the application that is giving you problems. It is a corrupt data file in your iPhoto LIbrary folder.
I am pretty sure you will have to create a new library and import the images from the old.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Read NEF Location Data without Losing Edits

I have been using Lightroom since before the Map feature. At the time, I spent a lot of time using the Nikon ViewNX software to add location data into the NEF files. I now have a lot of older folders with location metadata in the NEF files and Lightroom edits in the catalog.
Is there a way for me to ask Lightroom to import only the location data from my NEF files without losing my work?
I tested the "Read Metadata from File" option on one file, and although it DID get the location data, it also nuked my other metadata (stars and edits).

    Thanks everyone for your help.
I have been playing with a couple of scenarios and have found that with raw files (in my case NEF and CR2) it makes no difference whether you geotag first, then do a write metadata followed by a read metadata or whether you use the more logical sequence of first writing metadata, geotagging and finally reading metadata. With JPEGs the sequence DOES matter because Lightroom sems to overwrite valid GPS info with blanks when writing metadata to such files..
As for selecting a tool for applying geotags I guess everyone has his own favourite, I personally love GeoSetter (but use Jeffrey's other plugins extensively).

  • Import jpg into iphoto without losing comment information

I have a jpg file with something in the comments section.  How do I import the file into iphoto without losing the comments?

Are you referring to the Spotlight Comments section in the Info window from the Finder?
If that's the case they can't be read by iPhoto.  iPhoto reads the IPTC metadata fields that are in all image files.  The Spotlight Comments are Finder file attributes and are not written into the iPTC fields.

  • Is there a way to change fixed width Flat file connection manager to delimited without losing all the column names ?

Is there a way to change fixed width Flat file connection manager to delimited without losing all the column names ?

Unfortunately not as it is a quite dramatic change causing the metadata being refreshed. I would try to open though the package file in a text editor and find them before doing the change, then after you made the change to the FF connector try to reconstitute
/ replace the autimatically generated columns with the old names.

My wife and I have made many purchases over several years on seperate accounts, how could we join them into one account, without losing everything? We both use Iphone 5's and share an Imac at home.

Purchases using one Apple ID cannot be merged or transferred to another Apple ID. Purchases are forever tied to that Apple ID used. You have to decide which Apple you want to use for purchases and stick to that Apple ID so that you can share: Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID : > use the same Apple ID here to share purchases.
