Apple 15"  MacBook Pro versus Dell Precision M3800 which is best for LR + PS

Hi folks,
I am considering buying a 15" Apple MacBook Pro. At the moment I have a Dell Precision M4600 which is great however it is very heavy to carry if I take it with me.
I'm now considering a switch to MAC. I have a a creative cloud license so I could switch,
At the moment my 3 year old M4600 runs with 16 gig memory & a 1Tb SSD + an Intel i7 processor so the laptop, It's  I plenty fast however is a "sturdy brick".
If I got for a MAcBook I will spec 16Gig RAM & a 1Tb SSD. It's a pain you cant add them yourself. As I think this would be much cheaper.
Is any one out here running Adobe LR5 and PS CC on a Apple MacBook Pro 15" with 16 Gig memory and SSD ?
How does it run & is the apple OS much better or better at all than MS Windows7 / 8 ?
Anyone made the switch recently from WIN7 or 8  to MAC OS?
Thanks for help

BTW, David
I've tried Prism trial version, the files can be inported into FCP, but they need unbeliveable long period time to render when you finalized the sequence and try to exporting them, BTW, when editing with the Prism converted files, my FCP becomes very slow, or non-responsive so to speak, it wasted me tons of time.
Yesterday, I've tried a software called Pavtube MTS-M2TS converter, it converts many pro vedio formats that can compatible with FCP (even though they are much bigger in file size, plus when I importing the converted files, my FCP show me a notice that says: "the following media files are not optimized for Final Cut Pro. It is highly recommended that you either recapture the media or sue the Media Manager to create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback.)
Therefore, I am looking for a better way to convert the files I've got to optimize my work flow.
Thank you so very mcuh!!

My new company installed Adobe Creative Cloud (There was some annoying Proxy issues at first, because of the seriously tight I.T policies) but we are having some serious resolution issues with After Effects CC 2014 (also have this resolution problem with Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, Muse) on Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with icons and interface looking too small and hard to see, is there a fix, an update or a work around, can anyone help?
    Any help will be appreciated!

Hi Todd is there a time-frame for this fix, there is a lot of pressure on me, because I convinced my company to get the Creative Cloud and quite a lot of the CC software is not compatible with the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
Is there at least a work around, until this big fix comes along?

  • Connecting MacBook Pro to Dell Dimension

I have a MacBook Pro, a Dell Dimension and a 24" Dell Monitor. Im trying to connect the two computers to one monitor, keyboard and mouse. Its my understanding that a KVM switch should work but my main concern is that Im trying to use a wireless mac keyboard and a wireless mac mighty mouse. Also, Im going to need to have enough outputs on the switch to be able to share the speakers, a USB printer (Epson R220) and the USB card reader thats built into the monitor. Is there a KVM switch that will be able to handle this?
Is there a better way to be able to share these computers?
    Please help!

Wheather the wireless keyboard and mouse will work seems to depend on the adapter / bluetooth software stack being used.
Some people have had success with the DLink DBT-120 adapter, some don't. I have tried it with DBT-120 as well and it did not work. However, I tried it with the version that is currently sold in retail stores, which is the "C1" build version. This one uses a Bluetooth software stack from Toshiba and that seems to be the issue. The B1 version that some people where successful with apparently uses a WIDCOMM stack, and that seems to be the key.
Now, some people are saying that you have to have the DBT-120 adapter and a certain old version of the WIDCOMM stack, 1.4.2.10, to get it to work. But after searching the web quite a bit, I believe I found a better solution that will work with ANY bluetooth adapter (or built in bluetooth) that uses ANY version of the WIDCOMM stack.
    Here is what you do:
    1. Install you Bluetooth adapter as described by the manufacturer and reboot your machine.
    2. Switch the Apple wireless mouse on into pairing mode and watch the lower right side of your screen closely for messages from windows. There will be a message saying that pairing failed because of a missing code. Click on that message and in the window that opens enter 0000 as code. Now your mouse should work.
    3. Press Win Start button, choose Run and then type regedit and press enter to access windows registry editor.
    4. In the registry editor search for and select -> HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Widcomm\BtConfig\General
    5. Set the key 'PinCodeWord' to a decimal value of 1111
    6. Set the key 'UseFixedPin' to a decimal value of 1
    7. Then attempt pairing. When you get to the greyed PIN screen type 1111 using OTHER keyboard THAN Apple Bluetooth keyboard.
    8. Press the Return key on the Apple keyboard on the number pad, not the regular Retrun key.
    7. Enjoy your nice Apple wireless keyboard and mouse.
I am currently typing this with the Apple wireless keyboard and mouse on a HP laptop. The bluetooth adapter is from Belkin and the WIDCOMM stack is 4.x.

I just bought a Dell Precision M3800 laptop - screen res 3840 x 2160  when I open photoshop the task bar and tools and layers etc are in 4pts size   I changed my % in my image in my control panel and if I go to open file the drop down boxes are in good pt sizes  how do I make the layers and tool bars bigger?  Please help@

Windows will scale applications display or windows will not scale application display depending on how the application is coded.  Photoshop is coded in a way that its display is not scaled by windows.  Photoshop knows about your displays high pixel count not its resolution  so it uses its pixels  however it does not scale its UI to make it usable on your display.  Other application let Windows  scale their display output.   For example Microsoft default for is Surface Pro 3, 216 ppi display is to scale applications display up 150% so the surface pro 3 display which has 2160x1440 pixels a 216 ppi resolution look like at display with the user is using with 1440x960 pixels.  The Application works like the display is 1440x960 and Windows scale those pixels to the displays using the displays  2160x1440 pixels the effectively changing it resolution to 144ppi rather than the actual 216ppi.
The reg update  and external manifest file  effectively tells photoshop its working on such a size display display some number of pixel wide and some number photoshop uses that as the display size  in turn Windows scale those pixels to use the displays 2160x1440 pixels efector lowing its 216ppi resolution.  Photoshop CC 2014 2X UI would be like using windows 200% option applications would be shown the are working on a display 1080x720 instead of the Surface Pro 3 2160x1440. Note that 1080x720 does not meet PS requirement of 1024x768.  Photoshop UI would not fit on the Surface Pro 3 display..
Since you have a 4k display if you have CC 2014 you can use its 2x UI effectively Photoshop will be running on a 1920x1080 display and have half the resolution of you 4K display  3840x2160 pixels four native pixels are use as a single pixel.   1920x1080 pixels exceed PS requirement.

  • Dell Precision M3800 Performance Question

    Hi Everyone,
First time posting here so excuse me for the simplicity of the question ad information that I am providing.
I have recently bought the DELL Precision M3800 Workstation
    The specs are:
    CPU: i7 4702HQ (2.2Ghz - 3.2Ghz)
    16GB RAM
    512gb mSata SSD
    Win 8.1 PRO
The issue that I am having is speed. This is my first laptop with a solid state drive, and I was (possibly falsely?) expecting super fast speeds. To start with, the booting is very fast, (approx 7 seconds).
The problem is, installing, installing and launching applications.
I am currently installing Autodesk Maya 2015 and it is very slow. I have the file downloaded, so it is not the download speed, but its been going on for a good 15 minutes. This happens with all installations, Skype, AutoCAD, Photoshop etc.
If I open the task manager, It shows that the CPU is at 15% and the Disk is at 5%
None of my resources are utilised, while the programs are struggling to move progress in the installation.
It is similar with loading them. The time it takes to load up a program (installed on SSD) is the same as on my old laptop whin an i5 processor and normal HDD.
I guess my question is, is there any way to give programs more resources so they would react quicker, as the system is clearly capable of speeding things up, just the programs aren't using these resources.
Any and all ideas are welcome. If more information is required please ask.
    Thanks

    Thank you for your response!
I am aware that larger SSD's are slightly slower, but I have found the problem is not in the SDD itself.
I just ran CrystalDiskMark and here are the results:
               Sequential Read :   380.107 MB/s
              Sequential Write :   148.969 MB/s
             Random Read 512KB :   457.497 MB/s
            Random Write 512KB :   317.328 MB/s
        Random Read 4KB (QD=1) :    31.679 MB/s [  7734.2 IOPS]
       Random Write 4KB (QD=1) :    74.453 MB/s [ 18177.0 IOPS]
       Random Read 4KB (QD=32) :   383.831 MB/s [ 93708.9 IOPS]
      Random Write 4KB (QD=32) :    95.720 MB/s [ 23369.2 IOPS]
      Test : 100 MB [C: 28.8% (134.7/467.0 GB)] (x1)
      Date : 2014/09/13 20:30:32
        OS : Windows 8.1 Pro [6.3 Build 9600] (x64)
This confirms (in a way) that the SSD is capable of very high speeds compared to a standard HD. What comes to mind then, why would a 5gb installation take a good part of half an hour. As I've mentioned, in the task manager, the CPU, RAM and DISK never go
over 25% in usage during the installation.
    Any Ideas?

  • Hi there, I'm thinking of buying both a new MacBook Pro and a small 22 inch LED tv for my kitchen... what would I need to be able to use (wireless of course) the tv as a monitor for the new computer? Apple tv? Airport Express? something else? Thanks.

    Hi a,
    http://www.mctiviausa.com/
There has been "talk" on and off of Apple TV doing it (and people have done it with a hack), but I haven't really followed it.
It would be a whole lot cheaper getting an adapter (as needed) and cable and simply pluggin it in when you're in the kitchen.

apple new macbook pro dosent have a disk drive. Does the older model have a problem with the disc drive and so is removed in the new model?

No. Apple replaced the disk drive with a solid state drive (SSD) instead. The SSD is faster the old disk drive.

  • Can I use Final Cut Studio 3 - notably FCP 7 - on the lastest MacBook Pro (non Retina) (Z0MV-27-4GB-512-HRA Apple 15" MacBook Pro/2.7GHz Quadcore Intel Core i7/8 GB) running OS 10.8?

Can I use Final Cut Studio 3 - notably FCP 7 - on the lastest MacBook Pro (non Retina) (Z0MV-27-4GB-512-HRA Apple 15" MacBook Pro/2.7GHz Quadcore Intel Core i7/8 GB) running OS 10.8?  If not, is there a work-around if I have to revisit work done in FCS 3?

I have it running on the latest NON-Retina MBP. And a good friend of mine has it running on his Retina model. Works fine.

If you need to revisit them...that's why you install FCS3.  That's really the only reason I have that on my system, to revisit old projects, and to deal with clients who still use FCP 7.
You really should look at moving on though...not sticking with FCP7. It's 4 years old...two years since it was EOL.  Adobe Premiere Pro CC is a very good FCP replacement...although I don't like their "rental" method of paying a subscription to use it.  Or you can buy Adobe CS6...but that just lacks enough to make it not quite tempting for me.  Premiere CC is spot on...but **** if I don't hate that subscription model.  But there's also Avid Media Composer.  But that doesn't do a lot of things that I used FCP and Adobe for...

When will apple discontinue MacBook Pro 13 inch, 2013? They have already goo ten rid of the 15 inch.

You mean the non-Retina models... and no one knows when or if the 13" non-Retina will be discontinued. It's a bit long in the tooth, first being introduced in June of 2012. So it probably won't survive the 'next' round of new machines - but no one really knows!
I really don't want a completely closed machine, personally, and if you don't either I would grab the 13" while it's still available.

    souvikfromKolkata,
you’ll know as soon as the rest of us do if Apple decide to produce a new non-Retina model. My guess would be that they won’t do so, but that’s only a guess.
With Internet, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint representing your main usage, either a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air would be suitable for you.

I doubt this can be relocated or moved so you might want to just repost in the macbook pro area.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:
