Apple 20" display problem

I have an  20-inch apple display connected to a late 2006 mac pro (3ghz dual core). Recently a horizontal line (black mostly, but sometimes with some color pixels) began appering inside the web browser window (Safari or Chrome)...not always immediately after the window opens. Sometimes 2 or more lines are visible across the window. The line may also appeared inside the finder window and or dialogue windows, though not always. I assume that the display is working properly since the line only appears inside  windows and not across the desktop. The line is visible when the computer is connected to the internet via either ethernet or via the airport card. So far the line does not appear inside any other application windows. Any ideas what could be causing this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Arturo

If it appears inside the windows of multiple different programs, it is unlikely to be software related.
It could be the display going bad, but as you say, that would tend to give lines all the way across the display, not in a window.
It could be the RAM on the display card. This could be caused by a card that is too hot or a card that is dying.

  • 15" Apple Studio Display problems

I have an old 15" Apple Studio Display (Blueberry) that I'm using with my MacPro. Every once and awhile it will flicker. It acts like it turns off and then on. The screen never goes black. I can still see whatever is on the screen. In fact, it gets larger for a split second.
The connection is good. No loose cables.
I am sharing the monitor with the Blue and White G3 using a Belkin Flip.
    Any ideas?

Do you hear a zapping sound when it happens? It could be high voltage arcing. Blowing out dust might help.

  • Apple cinema Display problem after update

I had a similar problem to lain Maclreud
Immediately after updating to 10.4.11 and rebooting the toparea on my cinema display went dim and I saw the 2 short, one lon blinks on my power display LED
I didn't try it on another computer yet or try to change my power source but I may need a new backlight card as well. Please post if you have had similar problems after updating and suggest possible solutions.

Have you tried the Command-Option-P-R keys to reset the PRAM? (Maybe the upgrade has messed up the display settings?)

  • Mac Pro 3,1 with ATI Radeon 5770 + 30" Apple Cinema Display Problem

    Ok guys/gals,
First of all I apologize for the thread as there have been previous posts in the past referrencing various different questions and setups, but I have a problem..  It's a little bit of a noob question so sorry in advance BUT..
What is the correct way to set up the 30 inch with the 5770?  I have an old 3,1 (early 2008) that I've upgraded with various hard disks, SSD and 12 gig RAM.  I removed the stock Nvidia Card and replaced it with this one but I am having problems that cause the Mac to slow down and the display to go all "fuzzy" or have streaking greenish lines (which you can only see against a black backdrop).
Currently, i have it going into the DVI port with the USB and FW extensions just lying around.. I've read something about needing to source more power from the motherboard to power the display, but I am not sure what to do... It's hit or miss really... every time i want to play say Starcraft 2, i need to restart my Mac Pro else it gets extremely sluggish (graphics)...
Is my Mac dying?  or am i not powering the 30 inch correctly?  If not, then I am confused between display ports and dual power (active) mini display ports.. can someone please point me in the right direction?
Apols for the long note, but am pretty good with computers but this is just annoying the sh*t out of me and has been for a while...
(PS - I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEW MAC PRO !!!)
    Thanks,
    NK

    @ Hatter
Yup prior card was 8800gt and new card is nice and snug.  10.8 was not clean install, was upgrade.  Ill try safeboot although not sure how/why that will fix any long term issues i have (which are random).. Trying 10.7 i had the same issues and was hoping that 10.8 wld fix.. Why go back to 10.6.8 when it should work in todays day and age? :(
    @ Grant
Have done that now although not sure why something like this is not in the owners manual?!
Thanks for the help/suggestions so far guys, much apprec.. Feels like my pro is dying on me slowly but surely...
    Any other bright ideas?

    Hello everyone,
Few weeks ago had this problem with vertical lines on my iMac display, which apple told me it was a display problem and they needed to changed it. So far so good... despite the 300pounds i had to pay for a new screen but anyway....... now look what happened...
i was wondering if anyone has seen this problem before (i wish i could browse on internet about this problem, the thing is: with my screen like this i cant distinguish what is or isn't a good image when i watch videos/pic posted from other users regarding displays problems)... do you think is any graphic problem? or display again?
    i'm so upset
    Thanks

    Thanks for your reply.
I've just done it and the screenshot looks fine on my iphone. So... LCD problem again...? great
can you see any problem on this screenshot?
    Thank you for you help.

  • Reporting display problems to Apple

If you are having display problems, you should not be waiting for others to complain or just sit there stewing in your juices. Call AppleCare and tell them what's going on. People in IT have told me that one of the most frustrating things that they encounter are customers who do not complain about real problems. If they don't complain, no one knows that there's a problem, and the customer just gets depressed or hostile for mysterious reasons. You may discover that someone has been doing some kind of awkward work-around for a software problem or bug, and when you ask then how long that has been going on, they may say 5 years!
I just called AppleCare earlier today and carefully explained the symptoms of my screen and why it bothered me. I tried to explain that the gradient problem is triggering alarm bells in my brain that there must be some kind of vision problem. The guy on the other end was very patient, asked questions, and really seemed to listen. He admitted to me that they need to know this stuff. I finally had to get off the phone because of a lightning storm, but I got a case number to continue the conversation later this weekend.

Let us know what happens! I've also been on the phone with Apple -- three times in the past week -- and I've gotten two different people to actually admit, in a sort of weak way, that they're actually aware of the problem. They want my machine to go to "repair", since I'm past the 14 days, first suggesting that I bring it to the Apple Store far from my neighborhood, and then telling me that I can get a site visit after complaining that I hardly have time to get there (totally true) and I'm small and the thing is difficult for me to carry (totally true), although I have to wait for my extended AppleCare, which I purchased yesterday, to arrive in the mail. One of them told me that she thought she's heard of some of these problems actually being fixed. We'll see.
Two of them have suggested that I try an archive/reinstall, just to confirm that it's not a software problem, although both admitted that it was probably a hardware problem anyway. Has anyone tried that? Has anyone wondered what that original iMac update 1.0 actually did?
I've been trying to emphasize my theory about a DC offset on the LCD inverter output, and supposedly they are taking notes, but I wonder if any of that actually makes it up to the engineers. I'm hardly a crank. I have science, very advanced math, and IT backgrounds, and did a lot of tinkering with electronics as a kid. I really wish I could talk directly to the engineers.
And speaking from a long IT background, I can say that one of the most dangerous customer relations things you can do is deny that a real problem exists. That tactic always backfires with a vengeance.

  • Dual Display Problem - Mac Pro / 23" Apple Cinema

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of a hard time right now. Here's my situation. I'm using my Mac Pro with a primary HD Apple Cinema Display 23". I just recently stumbled upon a Sony HS95P. I've used this monitor before as a second display a few years back. I bought a " DVI 24+1 male to VGA female adapter DVI-D DVI-I DVI-A " and plugged it into my computer, no problem. Display shows up in system preferences, when I check mirror displays it takes the resolution of the 2nd display and the Sony flashes. However no screen, Blacked on the Sony. When I set up the displays to run into eachother, I can venture my mouse over onto where the other monitor would be, however it's black on the Sony.
What could be the problem? I didn't buy the Apple adapter, but could this REALLY be that serious of an issue? I didn't use it in the past, atleast I don't think I did.. Also could it be the OS? I'm using 10.6.8. Any help or advice/things to try would be awesome...  I have two DVI slots in the back of my Mac Pro, gfx card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. Thanks guys.

I'm back. Got my Mac Pro back from repair today. Ahhh...25" screen. However, they (the Apple Repair People) have put a new GeForce 8800GT in, to replace the old one.
And the final bill was $380 CDN ($40 for work, the rest for the card, around $300.)
What's Apple's policy on graphics card replacement, even if the customer is paying for it? I thought I asked for a new ATI 5770 card, but maybe I was wrong. I don't think I can take her back in and ask 'em to put a better card in there, and only ask for a bit more to cover the difference in price. I've got a feeling it doesn't work like that.....
    thanks

  • Help!  Strange Problem with 23" Apple Cinema Display and Wireless Internet

For some reason, Safari runs much much slower on my housemates new 23" Apple Cinema Display than just on his new Macbook. He is running Tiger. We use Airport Extreme for house-wide wireless, and he has an Airport Express to connect to his printer. Here is what he wrote:
"Last night, I was watching videos on ABC.com --- not a problem to watch on my laptop screen (new Macbook) - very fast. Then, after dinner, I plugged in my external screen (Apple Cinema Display), and it was so slow and wouldn't load. I unplugged the screen, and it was lighting fast again, so I watched the videos on my laptop screen. This morning, I was plugged into the external monitor and the Internet was slow to check my email. I unplugged the screen, and it's lightning fast now on my laptop screen.
Does this make any sense??? Why would my external monitor affect the Internet speed? "

I am having a similar problem as well. When I attach my 23" cinema display to my MacBook core 2 duo, my connection to the internet immediately stops working. I have tested this several times and it happens every time I connect the Cinema Display to my MacBook. When I disconnect the Cinema Display, my internet connection works perfectly again. I'm stumped as to why this happens.
I have tried several different searches on the forums, but have found no other threads besides this one. I'm I won't have to suck it up and pay the $50 for the call to AppleCare support.

  • Apple Cinema Display 24-inch sleep problems with MacBook 13-inch?

    Hey guys,
Occasionally, my MacBook (13-inch, 2009) when connected to my Apple Cinema Display 24-inch screen will not wake up from sleep mode - whether in clamshell mode, or not. Even if i unplug the Display from the Macbook, the MacBook will not wake up.
This can be very frustrating when it occurs because i have no choice but to give the MacBook a hard shut down.
Not sure whether I'm the only one with this problem, but if there is any solution to this issue it'll be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

You might try running the MacBook in Safe Mode for a while to see if the problem still occurs when running safe. If the problem goes away while in safe mode, that would point to a problem in the configuration of your main account.

  • I called Apple about the 20" iMac display problem today...

I have the same display problem that I've been reading about here, it's much much brighter on the bottom of my screen than on the top and viewing the screen from an angle makes the screen look very dusty and dirty.
First I talked to technical support and because I live 75 miles from an Apple store, he said a technician would come and look at it tomorrow even though I said it was a problem that is very common and just not on my computer. It will be interesting to see what the technician says.
Then I called customer relations to put in a formal complaint against the 20" iMac screens. I told the man that even on the Apple support forums here that everyone was complaining about it. He said everyone where he worked was using 20" iMacs and as he looked at the screens next to him, he noticed that the colors were all off, looking dirty brown like mine. He said that's just how the new 20" screens were. I tried my best to tell him that it just wasn't right that the screens were so flawed and, although he kind enough and understanding, he didn't see any big problem with them.
He did submit my formal complaint at the end but I have to tell you all, it sure looks like Apple does not see any problem with these screens. He suggested that I write to Apple at their corporate office to let them know of these problems. Here is that address:
    Apple
    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino, CA 95014
So that's my next step, writing to the corporate office.
I'll update this post after the technician comes tomorrow. I really don't expect this to be fixed but I shall let everyone know.
    Martha

I have been watching this forum for months and have come to a conclusion that Apple
has taken the "easy road" by using cheaper components as evidenced by these discussions pertaining to cheap lcd computer screens. Also, with the Imac there is limited upgrade paths and the fact now
the imac has become more of a glorified computer with the internals of a laptop which suggests it is almost mandatory to pay extra for apple care for 3 year warranty because of uncertainty for longevity in my opinion. I am still using an apple 2002 quicksilver G-4 computer almost 6 years old that has not given me and problem. I have also been able to upgrade the hard drive, dvd rom drive myself-you cannot readily do with the current imacs. I was thinking about replacing my G-4 with an Imac, but have now come to the conclusion that Apple is losing focus with providing quality products and unless something drastic happens which I doubt, Apple will lose me as a future customer. I may be forced to go to the other side and buy a PC.

  • Contacted by Apple for potential MBP retina display problem

I'm using MBP retina for exactly two weeks (received 7/27).
I was unable to get a call, but recieved a voice message from Apple regarding possible MPB retina display problem.
Is there anyone who got this call from Apple?
I dont' feel any problem on display, but wondering what could be problems.
    Thanks.

"...but recieved a voice message from Apple regarding possible MPB retina display problem."
Could you be more detailed about the message? Apple doesn't usually do that.

  • Wierd lines on my display and frequent lock-ups w/ and w/o display problems

When booting I sometimes get weird lines and blocks on my display (the GRAY Apple screen) and then it hangs, other times the computer will boot and run fine for 20-30 minutes and then the display goes wonkers with blocks and lines and the computer does not respond. The only way I can get it to boot is to reset the PRAM by letting it CHIME 3x and then occasionally it will boot without issue and run, while other times I still get the blocks and lines on the display.
When I am able to get it to recover and re-boot after the lock-up and display problems and occasionally the box in the middle asking me to re-boot similar to a kernel panic the OPS gives me the option to REPORT the error and here is the error for others who would know more...
    Thank you in advance,

Anyone know what is causing my problems? I thought it was heat so I downloaded a CPU and FAN temperature monitor and the CPU was getting VERY HOT at first so I then ramped-up the CPU FAN SPEED to maximum - it turns out the CPU FAN was not rotating well at low speed - since then I have cleaned and checked the fans and they all work as they should and blow on high(er) when the CPU temperature is above a certain level.

Is there a kb article or something that would illuminate what to look for in these logs, or is it a matter of learning by osmosis?
Both. I am not skilled in reading logs. It is a very technical and time consuming task for the uninitiated (me!) In scanning a log I look for the backtrace and loading dependencies. The first item in the backtrace is usually the roadblock.
Beyond that you can look at the Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics

  • Can I use a 30" Apple Cinema display with a new 27" iMac?

I have a brand new iMac(27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), i7 3.5 GHz, 32MB RAM, 4GB NVIDIA.  I will soon be upgrading it to Mavericks, if that makes a difference.  My understanding is that the resolution on it is 2560 x 1440.
I'm looking at buying a used 30" Apple Cinema display.  I'd like to use it with my new iMac.  The only advantage for me would be that the 30" screen is larger and things on it easier to see (or so I'm guessing).
I need to know if the 30" Cinema display would work with my new iMac, and if it would, as I'm guessing, give me a larger, easier-to-see screen.
I currently have my new iMac connected to my old mid-2010 iMac as a target display (that old iMac has a minidisplay port--no Thunderbolt), and that works great.  I just want a larger screen.
I called Apple support, and the tech rep wasn't sure it would work.  He seemed to think that the 30" Cinema displays were made with different connections.  Some had minidisplay ports (which he thought would work), and some a cord built into them that provided some other type of connection (that I guess would not work as far as he knew).
Can anyone tell me if this would work?  Would my new iMac and its video card support the 30" Cinema display?  Would the result be as sharp and good-looking as my iMac's built-in 27" display, but only bigger (which is what I'm hoping for)?  Any advice is appreciated.
I don't yet know many of the specifics of the 30" Cinema display I'm considering.  I know it is about 3 years old.  And here is a picture of the back of it:

Yes, you should be able use the 30" Cinema Display with your new iMac without problems. You'll need a mini-DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter:

I haven't had the 30" myself to test so I don't know if there any caveats. Perhaps someone else here will have personal experience.
    Regards.
