Apple 23" cinema HD display PSU suddenly inadequate

This has not happened to me, but a friend who is relatively new to apple products. 13 months after she got her 23" cinema display (which means one month out of warranty) the display suddenly would not turn on and was flashing short-long-short, or whatever the broken PSU signal is. Anyway, to verify that her PSU was indeed broken, I borrowed the 150W PSU from my 30", and the display turned on fine.
She went to the store and got a new 90W, but as it turns out the new 90W doesn't work either. It's still flashing the short-long-short code.
What this tells me is that the old power brick may not have been faulty, and that the display instead decided to suddenly require more power. Anyone else with this issue, or any suggestions what to do about it?
As for the old power brick, it's long gone and recycled in case you're wondering.

Similar Problem with our 2 year old Cinema Display in that it shows short-long-short flashing of Power LED and a blank screen. My wife said a thunderstorm was approaching, so she unplugged the computer and display power adapter. Next morning after plugging in the display stayed dead other than the flashing. Tried about everything including:
1) Connected a VGA montor to the display card using a DVI to VGA adapter - Card X1900XT seemed OK.
2) Reset PRAM
Like many I suspected Power Brick based on the Info from Apple. If the company is so environmentally friendly as they make out they would not seal their stuff, making it unrepairable - our throwaway society. The sealing only ages the electronics anyway because the heat transfer is restricted by the plastic case. I could not test the brick because it was difficult to get to the contacts in it without another proprietory Apple connector. So I thought what the heck and a sawed the brick open. The brick is outputting 24.7Vdc and also under load of 2.5A (my background is power electronics). The output connector has an identification resistor on one pin to ground that will incur a voltage across it when the display is connected. With the display connected and Brick open I measured 1V. This is how the displays identify the correct brick is attached. With the display connected, the 24Vdc was there and stable. So in my case I do not think it is the brick, but something in the display. One possibility is the Brick is not well designed and under some circumstances produces a surge when plugging the AC side in. A lightening induced surge is very unlikely, as it was very far off at that point and even so, an indirect strike should not get through to the load of a well designed power supply. You can be sure Apple do not design the Power Supplies, the Marketing only say how they should look. Must be a nightmare for the contracted design engineers.
We have no Apple Care, so repair will be likely unjustifiable. My wife has located a supplier with some 20" ACD's still in Stock (the 24" LED ACD has only a miniDVI so we cannot use that). Personally I would rather another brand. Our HP's at work have the same IPS type LCD display in side. They do not look as nice (our display is VESA mounted on the wall), and are bulkier, but at least you get 3 year warranty and they collect it for you on site if you have a problem.
I have used Apple products for 20 years, but this has got to be among the worst of their designed products from a reliabilty viewpoint.
Any one know how to open up a Cinema Display - I would like to look inside?

  • Using the 27" Thunderbolt and Apple 24" Cinema LED displays

I hope everything is having a good weekend.  I have been trying to find an answer and no avail I am not able to find any solid answer.
    Setup:
    2011 MacBook Pro 15" (MacBookPro8,2 model)
    27" Apple Thunderbolt Display
    Additional Equipment:
    Apple 30" Cinema HD Display
    Apple 24" LED Cinema Display
Ideally I would like to have all three monitors connected this macbook pro, but I know it may be hard.  At the minimum though I would setting for the 27" and 24" to be the two monitors.  Some time ago, I saw a web posting and a podcast talk about some entity achieving this feat, but it require the Pegasus RAID system.  I have noticed that I cannot directly connect the 24" to the 27" as the result is the 24" has a black screen and the MacBook Pro does not recognize the 24".
Now I have seen products which offer the monitors to be connected using some third party peripherels:
Newer Technology USB to DVI/HTML/VGA display adapter (which uses display link)
Mini Display Port | Thunderbolt +USB to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
Unfortunately the results would mean that my Thunderbolt will not be useful after I connect the 24" since it will not allow any more thunderbolt connections.  That is acceptable, but I will like to hear from anyone who is willing to share their experience.  I cannot find the link to a solution which allow the 24" to be connected to the MacBook Pro thru USB device (siimlar to the display link device).

It appears that a Thunderbolt accessory: "seagate goflex thunderbolt adapter" solves the problem.   Having the seagate device between the two monitors allows the 24" Apple LED Cinema Display to start working.  The solution may not be right for everyone as the adapter is about $179.99 on Amazon.

  • Can 23" cinema HD Display support Game systems connectivity

I currently have my display connected to my MacBook but space is a factor at my dorm. Can I use my Apple 23" Cinema HD Display to connect my xbox 360? I bought a DVI to HDMI adapter but i get no picture. i also have a xbox VGA cable if i need to go that route. I figure digital to digital should give me a better picture, the an analog to digital. Can my 23" Cinema HD Display support game system connectivity or these older display were meant for Mac's Only?

followup question... Does the 23" cinema HD Display support HDCP? Could that be the cause for a blank screen. the power light is solid. I when to Display settings and lower resolution on the monitor, still no picture?

  • How to Connect Early 2011 MBP 13" to Apple 20" Cinema Display at 1680x1050?

My early 2011 MacBookPro will only display 1280x800 on an external Apple 20" Cinema Display. The MBP's specs say that it will support dual displays and video mirroring simultaneously at full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560x1600 on an external display. The 20" Cinema Display specs indicates that it supports an optimum resolution of 1680x1050. The 20" display is connected to the MBP through it's Thunderbolt port using an Apple Mini Display Port to DVI connector. No luck.
I've tried using the latest version of SwitchResX set to 1680x1050. It says it is configured to 1680x1050 but the display does not respond.
Anyone had success setting up this combination of MPB and Cinema Display at the max resolution of 1680x1050?

To clarify. The MacBook Pro displays 1280x800 and the Apple Cinema Display mirrors it at 1280x800. I cannot get the ACD to display at it's max capable resolution of 1680x1050.
The MPB has 16GB ram so 512 SDRAM is available to the Intel HD Graphics 3000 chipset.

I Wish to connect my 6 year old Apple 20" Cinema Display to an orignal MacBook Air which does not have a Fire-Wire port. Is this possible? Any advice would be appreciated. I have the Micro-DVI to DVI adapter. Norm

The FireWire cable is just for the FireWire ports on the display.  The display will run without it.

  • Mini DisplayPort adapter for 23" Apple HD Cinema Display?

    hello all,
I'm sure this has been asked and answered here, but I can't find it! (grrr...)
I've got an 23" Apple HD Cinema display and a new iMac. The iMac has a "mini DisplayPort". Now, the Cinema Display has a 3 x 10-pin (not 3 x 8) DVI connector. The WIKI thing about DVI calls it a "DVI M1-DA (Dual link + USB)".
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface
For the life of me, I can't find an Apple (or other) adapter with the 10-pin connector to attach to the iMac?
    many thanks,
    b myers

If it's the old, plastic cased, 23" display, it may use ADC (Apple Display Connector).
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
In that case, you will need a DVI to ADC adapter

  • VMware Fusion and Apple LED Cinema Display

I have a 2008 MBP and a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display. My OS is 10.7.2.
I am running Windows 7 with the latest updates in VMWare Fusion 4.1.1. I have several issues.
    1) When I go to chose my monitor it say Apple LED Cinema Display but "Generic Non-PnP Monitor." I downloaded and installed the boot camp drivers as I understood those contained the drivers for the monitor, but that didn't seem to help. Do I need to have the Boot Camp drivers?
    2) When I try to access the Boot Camp Control panel in Windows 7 in Fusion I get "An error occured while tyring to access the startup disk settings. You may not have privileges to change the startup disk." My guess is this is because the Boot Camp drivers are only needed if you actualy run Boot Camp.
    3) In Windows I cannot choose the native resolution of the Apple display (2560 x 1440).
    4) The resolution ia 1277 x 1234. That is weird.
    5) If I minimze the Fusion window and then immediately open it, it looks fine. But if I wait for awhile and open it, the window will be black until I click inside of it.
Something is wrong, Any help in fixing this would be greatly appreciated.
    Bryan

you have to separate out what is Fusion and what is Windows native.
Even doing updates to Windows sometimes should not or cannot be done properly in VM.
And there is no way to change the default boot drive - a VM doesn't have access and that is the host OS's job, not the guest's.
Install the latest AMD driver for mobility - and dont' use the "auto detect" - that is not going to work on Apple hardware.
You dont' run Boot Camp. But the Apple drivers and serives needed for hardware support, yes, they aren't running or loaded.

  • Older Apple HD Cinema Display is detected but no picture

Forgive me, as I know this is an often-asked question but I have searched and can't find a response that fixes the issue.
    Yet.
So I have a Mac Pro (circa 2008) that works fine. The Apple Cinema Display is even older from about 2004 (I think).
Everything was working fine and I was video editing and Photopshopping to my hearts content.
I had noticed that recently the display would not come back from sleep without rebooting the computer.
So that might have been an early clue.
Then this morning I came home from taking the kids to school and the Mac Pro fan was running loud and no image on screen.
I rebooted the computer. This time the monitor displayed black and white vertical lines.
    "Oh joy," thought I.
    I rebooted again.
This time nothing but the heart of darkness.
    Nothing.
I reseated the video card (as that has been a culprit in the past) and rebooted. Still no image. Did all the PRAM, unplugging the computer, waiting a minute plugging back in, plus all the other keyboard tricks one reads about. Still no joy.
I then tried the monitor on my MacBook Pro to see if it was a computer issue or monitor issue. No image from the MacBook Pro either.
The Macbook Pro did detect the display though and showed it along side theMacbook Pro screen is the Display Prefences.
I also ran the MacBook Pro in Traget Mode to the laptop so i could run diagnostic checks and repairs uisng Apple Utilities and Disk Warrior. No problems were detected on the Mac Pro (tower).
I then connected a Samsung monitor (that the kids watch Netflix on) and that worked fine on both the laptop and the Mac Pro tower.
So I have isolated the cause to the Apple HD Cinema Display. The video card and other hardware tested out fine.
Any thoughts on a fix or what the issue might be?. I can get by with Samsung as I am on deadline - but would rather have my trusty Apple Cinema screen back.
    Many thanks.
And good karma to all who give it a head scratch.
    A

Yeah I use my screen saver more often now and yes it's the white windows and desktop icons that ghost the most not horrible and my warrant is a few years past. The genius is wrong to accuse you that's just plain silly. The first apple 30 inch I bought had green lines and after a few trips to the store they sent it off to be repaired but in the end I think I got a different monitor back. Three and a half years later this started to happen. It's like short term burn and it's pretty subtle. I'm an audio guy so if I were a graphics person and this was my main rig I would be more upset. I just hope it does not continue to get worse. I have an older 22 inch with the clear plastic and it does not have the issue. It only starts to do it after it's been n for few hours.
Good to know I'm not the only one, thanks for posting.

  • VGA Windows laptop to Apple LED Cinema Display...?

Attaching VGA Windows laptop to Apple LED Cinema Display...? Is this possible? I have a personal MBP that'd work fine, but need to connect a work laptop as well. Any insight would be great. Thanks!

As mentioned, the biggest issue is that the VGA signal is analog, and the Apple Cinema Displays only accept digital signals. Does your laptop have any other videop output ports? A DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort would be the easiest, of course, but if you have an HDMI connection, you could get something like the Atlona HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Converter and Scaler. Not exactly cheap at $170, but if you really need it, and you have the port, maybe it is a solution for you. The only issue, it seems, is you would be limited to 1920x1080 resolution.
