Apple 23" Cinema vs Dell 22" E228WFP

I can get the Dell for just under $300. Apple has the refurbed 23 for $750. It seems like a no brainer to me but I would appreciate some input.
I don't know if the clarity of the screens would be much different. I've been using a ViewSonic 21" CRT for 10 years and it's finally giving out. I'm expecting the text on the LCD's will not be as crisp as on my CRT.
So I'm just wondering what others have experienced. Thanks!

Text will be crisp if you use the LCD at its native resolution, and use DVI. There will be no flicker, but there may be a slight lag with fast moving images. LCDs have some color shift if not viewed straight on. The Apple displays have a wider viewing angle than some other brands. If possible, see the displays in operation before buying. That will also give you a chance to look for bad pixels. They are not common, but there is no guarantee you will get none.

Reviews would point out the Dells have a different backlight that is brighter and produces more faithful colours unless you are working with print media where the ACDs backlight produces a more, don't have the technical term, muddied colour representation that will faithfully reproduce the colours that can be output in print form. If you had clients that looked at your images on a stock Dell and then saw the printed output they wouldn't like it because the colours to them looked more vibrant on the Dell than what they got on paper. (see anandtech reviews, etc.)
iMovie wouldn't be a worry. That said you should be adjusting down the brightness of the Dell (through the individual colours, not the limited brightness control in the on-screen-menu) and create a custom colour profile, which means calibrating it if you do any form of print work.
If you weren't mentioning anything dealing with printed works I would say the Dell would be a fine out-of-box monitor with the least effort to get working right away. With print work I still lean towards the ACD for people wanting the least hassle to work with print.
I don't do print work, I work with photographs and graphics for the web and the Windows colour profile is the default in that world which is fine (Dell's are tuned to that out of the box) The Apple colour profile is (ACD) tuned for print.
Re 2005FPW to 2405FPW its your choice. Also consider ergonomics with any of these monitors. I found that with the larger displays on my desk that my head/viewing angle led to strain in my neck and shoulder/back muscles which would cramp up after extended view.
If you want to in future buy a HDTV tuner with DVI output then keep in mind that the 2005FPW is just a hair too short on vertical lines to be truly capable of displaying the full 1080 format of HDTV.
Lot's to think about. For me, I went with the 2005FPW. At the time the 20" ACD was well over $1,100 to buy. The 2005FPW I got for $460 which was more than half the ACD. The LCD screen is the same, the brighter backlight and logic boards are different (more inputs on the Dells, and USB2.0 ports). I also got a 3 year warranty over Apple's 1 year. Little known fact is you can even buy the Dell monitors with the 5 year warranty, its just a few dollars more for every additional year of warranty on the units.
That said, it wasn't the only deal that sold me. I took the savings, bought $8 in appliance paint, and spent my savings on another Mac (the mini) with a new wireless keyboard and mouse on top. One weekend project and I now have a monitor that looks as good as the Apple computer.
The cat is from a Nikon Digital SLR, if you can imagine the raw image was more than 4 of those monitors put together to represent the actual picture without being resized.

  • Dell 2005FPW, pivoted, with Apple 20" Cinema?

Thanks again to all. The Dell 2005FPW does work splendidly with the Radeon 9600. I have them probably permanently set up with the Dell in portrait mode to the right of the Apple display. Each can easily have its resolution changed independently, although I don't think quite the same resolutions are available that were with the nVidia card. (not a big deal to me.) The Dell can pretty comfortably display a full orchestral score at a readable resoluton. It's also easy to disable one monitor with software if you only want one on, useful to me because both are behind a big plexiglass music desk, and the power buttons are inconvenient to reach.
I spent some time with Applecare before it was revealed (to several Applecare folks as well as me) that the power supply for the G5 is 600W, more than ample to power the Radeon, which acoording to THEIR tech support requires 250W. The line in the G5 manual that "Combined maximum power consumption by the AGP and PCI cards is 90W" is still a mystery to me and those several Applecare people, and doesn't interest the smarmy and unhelpful Radeon tech person. I don't see how this all adds up, but nothing has melted.
    Thanks again, folks.

  • Better Mac Pro display: Apple 23" Cinema HD or Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP?

I bought a Mac Pro a few months ago and want to upgrade my monitor. I'm currently using (via an adapter) the 17 incher that came with my old G3. Compared to the 2407WFP, Apple's display is an inch smaller, about $300 more (with applicable government discounts), with a 3-year warranty as opposed to a 5 year warranty with Dell. Anyone have any recommendations based on personal experience?
I am using the base level Mac Pro graphics card. I'm not a gaming fanatic though I'll probably play some on the Mac (as soon as Intel compatible versions come out). Mainly interested in using my computer for graphics and music.

  • Apple 23 Cinema not working with nvidia 5200...help!!!

    Hey all!
I have an Apple 23" Cinema that is not working with my Windows XP machine using an NVIDIA 5200 128meg graphics card. The montior, when booting Windows, just flashes its power light 3 times...goes off...then repeats the sequence.
So, I tried a Dell 2007WFP with the XP machine using the DVI port of the card. When booting, it seems like it's going to fire up the monitor (shows splash screen and Windows logo) but then goes blank when it hits the desktop.
Oddly enough, when I plug in my Apple 30" into the DVI port of the NVIDIA card, it works just great. No fuss or muss (other than a resolution change).
The 23" also works fine with my MacPro BTW so I know the monitor is golden.
    Any takers on this one?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi Talon, I just accidentally came across your thread. Maybe I can help. I own a 23-inch cinema HD display but mine is ADC and I have to run mine through an ADC to DVI adapter.
    Anyways on to the discussion...
The nvidia 5200 is a rather old-ish card (or chipset). The feature set in these older cards are not necessarily symmetrically reciprocal (what?) throughout the feature set. In other words, the feature may work in one mode and not in the another mode...etc...
You may have seen these specs on your 5200 card/chipset:
+Dual RAMDACs (up to 400 MHz) for display resolutions up to and including 2048×1536 @ 85Hz+
and thought this would be great, my resolution is less than that @ 1920x1200 on my 23-inch cinema display. However I believe this may be referring only to the vga output signal and not the DVI. Read on...
Further down in the specs for the 5200 card/chipset you'll see:
+DVI support for compatibility with nextgeneration flat panel displays with resolutions up to and including 1600×1200+
Unfortunately, this is not enough resolution to power your 23-inch display at 1920x1200. Windows may even show the resolution 1920x1200 as available (if you're able to get to the screen) but what I think it's not telling you, it that in order for you to be able to use that resolution you'll need to switch to dual mode DVI, and the card does this automatically.
For example: 640x800 to 1600x1200 uses single mode DVI and anything above that (like our 23-inch cinema HD monitors @ 1920x1200) +using this particular card/chipset+ will be using dual mode DVI whether the monitor can support that mode or not. From my experience with my HD cinema it uses single mode DVI.
As someone said above your 23-inch is in *single mode DVI* and from my experience only accepts *single mode DVI input* from the graphics card.
From my understanding of the specs and your description of the delimma, I would suppose that you are able to get the 30 inch display to work because the 30 inch is a *dual mode DVI monitor* and your graphics card does work in dual DVI mode up to your 30-inch resolution but ONLY in dual DVI mode.
Here are the specs on it:
    http://www.nvidia.com/page/pg_20040109440047.html
I hope this helps you out.
If you were to ask my recommendation, I'd go buy a new video card that has higher resolution on the single mode DVI output. I can tell you that my ATI 2600 HD Pro (AGP) (windows version, not mac only) has two DVI ports that are both dual mode DVI capable but also dumb down to single mode DVI signaling at high enough resolution to support our 23-inch cinema HD single mode DVI displays.
    Good luck!

  • NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 with Apple 23" Cinema Display?

    Hi,
I would like to know if my graphic card in my Sony Vaio PC is compatible with a 23" Apple display ? I would like to run a splitter with one feed going to my Mac Pro and the other to my PC utilizing the same Apple LCD monitor.
I have a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 with 128Mb, this card has a PCI connection, but I am not sure if my card could support the Apple 23" Cinema Display that I recently purchased to replace the 19" Envison LCD that I'm currently using ?
Does anyone have an idea ?
Is there a list somewhere giving compatble graphic card ?
The nvidia site does not say a word about cinema display !
    Thanks in advance

    But yes, they do.

  • How to Connect Early 2011 MBP 13" to Apple 20" Cinema Display at 1680x1050?

My early 2011 MacBookPro will only display 1280x800 on an external Apple 20" Cinema Display. The MBP's specs say that it will support dual displays and video mirroring simultaneously at full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560x1600 on an external display. The 20" Cinema Display specs indicates that it supports an optimum resolution of 1680x1050. The 20" display is connected to the MBP through it's Thunderbolt port using an Apple Mini Display Port to DVI connector. No luck.
I've tried using the latest version of SwitchResX set to 1680x1050. It says it is configured to 1680x1050 but the display does not respond.
Anyone had success setting up this combination of MPB and Cinema Display at the max resolution of 1680x1050?

To clarify. The MacBook Pro displays 1280x800 and the Apple Cinema Display mirrors it at 1280x800. I cannot get the ACD to display at it's max capable resolution of 1680x1050.
The MPB has 16GB ram so 512 SDRAM is available to the Intel HD Graphics 3000 chipset.

  • Mini DisplayPort adapter for 23" Apple HD Cinema Display?

    hello all,
I'm sure this has been asked and answered here, but I can't find it! (grrr...)
I've got an 23" Apple HD Cinema display and a new iMac. The iMac has a "mini DisplayPort". Now, the Cinema Display has a 3 x 10-pin (not 3 x 8) DVI connector. The WIKI thing about DVI calls it a "DVI M1-DA (Dual link + USB)".
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface
For the life of me, I can't find an Apple (or other) adapter with the 10-pin connector to attach to the iMac?
    many thanks,

If it's the old, plastic cased, 23" display, it may use ADC (Apple Display Connector).
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
In that case, you will need a DVI to ADC adapter

  • VMware Fusion and Apple LED Cinema Display

I have a 2008 MBP and a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display. My OS is 10.7.2.
I am running Windows 7 with the latest updates in VMWare Fusion 4.1.1. I have several issues.
    1) When I go to chose my monitor it say Apple LED Cinema Display but "Generic Non-PnP Monitor." I downloaded and installed the boot camp drivers as I understood those contained the drivers for the monitor, but that didn't seem to help. Do I need to have the Boot Camp drivers?
    2) When I try to access the Boot Camp Control panel in Windows 7 in Fusion I get "An error occured while tyring to access the startup disk settings. You may not have privileges to change the startup disk." My guess is this is because the Boot Camp drivers are only needed if you actualy run Boot Camp.
    3) In Windows I cannot choose the native resolution of the Apple display (2560 x 1440).
    4) The resolution ia 1277 x 1234. That is weird.
    5) If I minimze the Fusion window and then immediately open it, it looks fine. But if I wait for awhile and open it, the window will be black until I click inside of it.
Something is wrong, Any help in fixing this would be greatly appreciated.
    Bryan

you have to separate out what is Fusion and what is Windows native.
Even doing updates to Windows sometimes should not or cannot be done properly in VM.
And there is no way to change the default boot drive - a VM doesn't have access and that is the host OS's job, not the guest's.
Install the latest AMD driver for mobility - and dont' use the "auto detect" - that is not going to work on Apple hardware.
You dont' run Boot Camp. But the Apple drivers and serives needed for hardware support, yes, they aren't running or loaded.

  • Older Apple HD Cinema Display is detected but no picture

Forgive me, as I know this is an often-asked question but I have searched and can't find a response that fixes the issue.
    Yet.
So I have a Mac Pro (circa 2008) that works fine. The Apple Cinema Display is even older from about 2004 (I think).
Everything was working fine and I was video editing and Photopshopping to my hearts content.
I had noticed that recently the display would not come back from sleep without rebooting the computer.
So that might have been an early clue.
Then this morning I came home from taking the kids to school and the Mac Pro fan was running loud and no image on screen.
I rebooted the computer. This time the monitor displayed black and white vertical lines.
    "Oh joy," thought I.
    I rebooted again.
This time nothing but the heart of darkness.
    Nothing.
I reseated the video card (as that has been a culprit in the past) and rebooted. Still no image. Did all the PRAM, unplugging the computer, waiting a minute plugging back in, plus all the other keyboard tricks one reads about. Still no joy.
I then tried the monitor on my MacBook Pro to see if it was a computer issue or monitor issue. No image from the MacBook Pro either.
The Macbook Pro did detect the display though and showed it along side theMacbook Pro screen is the Display Prefences.
I also ran the MacBook Pro in Traget Mode to the laptop so i could run diagnostic checks and repairs uisng Apple Utilities and Disk Warrior. No problems were detected on the Mac Pro (tower).
I then connected a Samsung monitor (that the kids watch Netflix on) and that worked fine on both the laptop and the Mac Pro tower.
So I have isolated the cause to the Apple HD Cinema Display. The video card and other hardware tested out fine.
Any thoughts on a fix or what the issue might be?. I can get by with Samsung as I am on deadline - but would rather have my trusty Apple Cinema screen back.
    Many thanks.
And good karma to all who give it a head scratch.
    A

Yeah I use my screen saver more often now and yes it's the white windows and desktop icons that ghost the most not horrible and my warrant is a few years past. The genius is wrong to accuse you that's just plain silly. The first apple 30 inch I bought had green lines and after a few trips to the store they sent it off to be repaired but in the end I think I got a different monitor back. Three and a half years later this started to happen. It's like short term burn and it's pretty subtle. I'm an audio guy so if I were a graphics person and this was my main rig I would be more upset. I just hope it does not continue to get worse. I have an older 22 inch with the clear plastic and it does not have the issue. It only starts to do it after it's been n for few hours.
Good to know I'm not the only one, thanks for posting.

  • VGA Windows laptop to Apple LED Cinema Display...?

Attaching VGA Windows laptop to Apple LED Cinema Display...? Is this possible? I have a personal MBP that'd work fine, but need to connect a work laptop as well. Any insight would be great. Thanks!

As mentioned, the biggest issue is that the VGA signal is analog, and the Apple Cinema Displays only accept digital signals. Does your laptop have any other videop output ports? A DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort would be the easiest, of course, but if you have an HDMI connection, you could get something like the Atlona HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Converter and Scaler. Not exactly cheap at $170, but if you really need it, and you have the port, maybe it is a solution for you. The only issue, it seems, is you would be limited to 1920x1080 resolution.
