Apple Address Won't Open

On my iMac G5, my Apple Address Book won't open. It has been working perfectly and I've never had a problem since buying the computer about a year ago. Though the name appears on the top menu bar and the triangle shows beneath the Address Book icon on the Dock, nothing appears on the screen. I ran the Disk Utility Repair Permissions, but aht didn't correct it. I've rebooted and that didn't solve the issue either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Delete the apps purchased by your cousin and purchase your own.

Grey screen /apple logo won't open reinstall 10.6

The internal hard drive may have failed.
You should be able to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD by inserting it and holding down the c key while it boots. From there you can select the Disk Utility app to check the internal drive.

  • Apple Configurator won't open.

I am teacher using a class set of iPads for the first time. I had hoped to use Apple Configurator to sync iPads and manage everything.
When I first tried, I got the message during the Prepare stage that the Apple ID wasn't authorized. I authorized the MacBook Pro OSX I am using to use the Apple ID I wanted so that worked. Then, I got the error message during the Supervise stage that it cannot install app. I never figured out which one after some trial and error.
But, NOW Apple Configurator won't open - it says the file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format. How can I totally get rid of a file and start again?
I've tried moving to the trash, emptying the trash and then reinstalling. I've tried restarting my computer. I've tried using both of my iTunes accounts to get it from the App Store and every time I try to open it, the same error message comes up. Is there some temporary or other file that I need to get it out of in order to start new?
    Thanks for your help.

You can try completely deleting your configurator data folder. This should reset the app to a clean state, but you will lose all device and user data.
For Configurator 1.2 or later, delete the folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator
For Configurator 1.1 or previous, delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.configurator.

  • Programs keep not responding, computer freezes often, apple mail won't open

Starting yesterday my computer has been running very slowly. it takes almost 15 minutes to start up and then programs won't open or will quit unexpectedly or not respond. Not to mention that my computer freezes every 30 seconds or so. I have 4gb of crucial ram that system diagnostics say is ok. i don't know what is wrong.

Have you tried opening Mail from the Applications folder. The Dock alias may be corrupt.
    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Basic Apple applications won't open on Mac Pro after Mavericks upgrade

    Hi,
I'm having issues opening a number of basic applications including Quicktime and Itunes
Through the App store I have updated everything, the last one I was holding out on was updating Itunes. I did that last night and now today Itunes won't open.
I click the image in the dock, the icon briefly bounces upward and then after bouncing down does not open or display any kind of error message.
I am running a 2008 Mac Pro w/ 2x2.8ghz quad-core, 10gb of RAM, these issues began after updating to Mavericks.
Many other apps including FCPX, Adobe Premiere CC, VLC, App Store, are all working fine.
It seems to be an issue with just basic Apple software - please help!

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • Apple store won't open on iPad?

Since I had the new software update my apple store won't load.

Try quitting the App Store completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that didn't work, try this. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
You can also try rebooting your router. That may help. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • Apple Software won't open now (Safari, Mail, Dashboard)

I downloaded iTunes and Quicktime updates yesterday. I went to open Apple Mail, and it opened all my previously opened messages, and then automatically closed. Safari did the same thing. It opened, briefly, but then automatically closed. Both apps told me an error occurred and asked if I wanted to Close or Reopen. Reopen just duplicated the problem.
This morning I went to Dashboard, and one by one, all my open dashboard items game me an error. Now when I switch to dashboard, my board is empty.
I used Disk Tools to repair permissions and restarted. No change.
I have a second internal drive with 10.4.9 on it so I restarted off that drive. My intention was to run first aid, but first I wanted to update to the same os version, so did a software update to get it to 10.4.10. It updated the security patch OK, but the 10.4.10 update gave me an error and said it could not be installed. I tried it again. Same error. I then tried to restart, and that system, which was VERY clean system, now doesn't even start up. I had to startup off of a CD to get back to my original system, which, still won't let me open Safari or Apple Mail.
    Please help!! Thank you!

    Nice thought! But alas I have 18 gig available on my primary 140 gig internal drive. I should also note that the applications also have problems under my other user accounts. However all users share the same applications folder. I tried copying just Safari app to user applications folder, but it still crashes. I checked the console log and both safari and mail are indicating crash on Thread 0. Safari crash reporter log shows;
Thread 0 crashed with PPC Thread State 64:

  • Apple programs won't open in mavericks

So after updating to mavericks after it was released, I am experiencing the same problem over and over. Everything will run and open fine for a while. After a week or a few days, Apple programs will stop opening. (app store, Preview, Facetime, Safari.) I have reinstalled mavericks at least 5 times by restarting in safe mode. The problem will be fixed for a while, (few days, maybe a week) and then the same issue comes back. The only thing that fixes it is a reinstall. I have seen similar post on other forums about the same issue, but have yet to find a solution. Anyone know if there is one? I am using a mid 2012 macbook pro.

I can't give any help as I also have issues that come and go.  That is why I'm sticking with ML for now and run Mavericks on external SSD as a test drive until I see all these issues go away.  I see very few benefits to the Mavericks OS at this point.

  • Apple mail won't open even though the amount of new mail is shown in top right corner of application?

I click to open the mail application but it never opens.  After waiting a few minutes the amount of notifications I have is shown on the icon but it still won't open.  Mail worked fine on my mac until I updated to Mavericks.  Please help!! I've already tried restarting and I also tried deleting my mail account off of mail and then adding it back but it still doesn't work.  I never made a backup so I can't go back to a previous version and I can't try a clean install.

I'm having almost the same trouble, and yes I did update to Safari 4 while I was still in Leopard 10.5.7. Now, in 10.6.1 my Mail app is suddenly getting this exception in the console log when trying to send via SMTP (to a server that the "connection doctor" validates as OK"):

    Hi all,
Sins one week some of my apple apps wont open.
    (i have a dutch installation)
    The font library
    App store
    Document/image viewer
and maybe even more didnt check all the applications
    Running mac os x 10.9.1
    Macbook pro begin 2011
When i want to open some of the above apps, the screen just flashes and the dock just pops but no icon is shown or app is opening.
    Thanks

You ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software, if you know what it is, according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

  • LR 4.3 Print Module + Dry Creek icc Profile = jpeg that Apple SW won't open

    Greetings,
I have used Dry Creek Photo's (http://www.drycreekphoto.com/) Costo printer profiles successfully for some time with PS and they seem to work fine for soft proofing in LR4... but when I select one of those profiles in LR's Print module for export to jpeg[1] the jpegs produced cannot be opened with Preview, Color Sync, Safari, seemingly any Apple software in OS X (I've tried with both Snow Leopard and Lion).  The jpegs do open in PS and browsers like Chrome and Firefox.  If I open the files in PS and then save them with "Save As" the saved files open correctly in Preview, etc.  Also, other icc profiles (like Adobe or sRGB) seem to work fine.  I do not know if the printers at Costco can read the problematic jpegs or not.
Can anyone expain what's happening here?  Am I doing something wrong?  Is this a LR or Apple bug?  Will the jpegs printed from LR's print module be usable on Costco's printers?  Will I have to "launder" everything through PS (which would I would obvioiusly rather not do)?
    Thanks!
[1] Files printed at Costco need to be in the color space of the printer for Soft Proofing to work since unless it's changed recently Costco's printers ignore embedded profiles.  See, http://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/using_printer_profiles.htm

This file (it's just a screenshot of this browser window "Printed" from LR4) is an example of one that will produce the problem described in my OP: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/36072/Misc.%20Forums/test1.jpg
It was produced with Lightroom 4.3 on OS X 10.6.8.  It is using this (http://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/Profiles/IccFiles/Florida/Costco-FL-Lantana-Gls.icc) icc profile (picked at random to maintain my anonyminity). Trying to open that image with any Apple application on either OS X 10.6 or 10.7 fails for me.  I can successfully open the file in PS, Chrome and Firefox in both 10.6 and 10.7 without issues.  On OS X 10.7 I get the following dialog when trying to open it with Preview:
Doing "Get Info" on the file results yields this:

  • Apple maps won't open

When i try to open apple Maps, it starts, then crashes.
I also have issues with other apps crashing while being used.
Resetting the ipad doen't help. I'd be happy to delete apple maps. but since it is not available for downloading from the app store, I'm reluctant.
    Suggestions?

Try downloading another app - any free app will do. See if that resets the other apps.
Trying quitting/closing Apps. Double tap the home button to bring up the task bar with the recent apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on one of the icons until they all wiggle. Then tap the minus signs in the corners of the app icons to close them. Close all apps. Tap the screen above the task bar. Restart the iPad. Hold down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut down. Hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears to peer up again.
You can also try a reset - hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider -let go of the buttons.
See if any of these things help.

  • Apple Mouse won't open files

My trustee old iMac has never given me any problems until recently. When I try to open a file by clicking on it with my mouse, it highlights the file but doesn't open it. I can open flies by using Open File. I have tried another Apple mouse but no luck. I run several legacy OS 9 programs on this iMac that don't run on my other iMacs so would like to find solution. Appreciate any suggestions.

I take it you've restarted the computer and tested to see if the problem persists? If not, that's Step One. A restart can often be a big help.
Step Two would be to connect the mouse directly to one of the USB ports if it's not already and test. Sometimes keyboard problem can keep the mouse from working properly if it's running throuah port on the keyboard. If you have the mouse attached to a non-powered USB hub, the hub alone could be the problem.
Step three is doing some routine maintenance. The easiest thing to do is to repair permissions using Disk Utility, in Applications -> Utilities.
    Try those and report back.
