Apple Airport Express in relation to AirPlay and speakers?

If I buy a airport express can I connect it to my home wifi (not plug an ethernet cable into it) and plug a pair of speakers into it, and then play music from my iPhone 5 with AirPlay onto the speakers?
Also will the airport express boost my wifi speed/range wherever it is place?
Lastly, if I use a aux splitter, can I plug another pair of speakers/stereo into the airport express, so it then has 2 speaker systems plugged into it, and it will still work the same? (By playing music with through wifi into the speakers)

Yes, yes, and yes. Note: The speakers that you would plug into the Express' audio port would need to be self-powered.

It can, potentially, increase the Wi-Fi range but only if the router that it is extending is another AirPort router.

The audio port on the Express was designed to support a single device. However, and I haven't tried this myself, it may work as you intend to use it with a "aux splitter."

  • Apple Airport Express  N Ethernet connection problems...

    Hello,
I have just setup my apple airport express to connect to my belkin wireless N router F5D8636-4 v2 via Ethernet. I have turned all the wireless features off on the express as I'm only using it to send music to my DAC. It is assigned I.P by DHCP all other computers are manually asigned I.Ps so no conflicts. My computer is also wired to the router and running windows 7 64bit. It all works great apart from when I turn my P.C off.
When I turn it back on it cannot find the airport express over LAN until I reset the apple airport express by powering it down and back on. Is this right? Surely not? OR when im finished with my hi-fi should I be turning the apple airport express off?
    Anyone got any suggestions?
    Cheers

The Express can effectively extend the 2-Wire network if 4 conditions are met during the configuration of the Express to create a wireless network:
    1)  Same wireless network name as the 2-Wire network
    2)  Same wireless network security as the 2-Wire network
    3)  Same password as the 2-Wire network
    4)  Bridge Mode Operation
Most users know 1) and 3), but 2) is the real key here. If the wireless security setting of the 2-Wire and Express do not match up exactly....then you will have 2 separate wireless networks instead of the seamless network that you desire.
So, the first question....do you know the exact type of security settings that the 2-Wire router is using?  If not, it is not possible to configure the Express the way that you want without a long trial and error guesswork process.
You may need to contact your service provider to find out how to access the settings to learn what they are.
If you do know the exact security settings being used by the 2-Wire router, post back with that info and we can provide a step by step configuration guide if you want.
I assume that you are using OS X 10.6.8 as your profile indicates.

  • Apple Airport Express NOT Working! Internet IS working.

I have Apple Airport Express.  It is wireless and multiple computers as well as cable are all able to access internet because of this handy device.  However I have unplugged it because I was having an issue with Apple TV... and I plugged everything back in and I won't get internet.  I called my internet provider and they had me hook up the internet directly to my laptop (skipping the Apple Airport Express) and now I have internet again!    However, I only have internet on the one computer that is hooked up... not all the computers/TVs/Apple TVs/iPad in the house.
It isn't an issue with the internet provider because I can get internet.  I can't help but think that it is a problem with the Apple Airport Express.  I've unplugged everything, waited a few minutes and plugged everything back in.  I've done this a few times.  Nothing seems to work.  What am I doing wrong?  I was working fine before the first time I unplugged (and that was due to another Apple device, I think, going wrong).
    Help!

    Morning zannahdoll,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Some Internet service providers use a method called "hardware access provisioning" to regulate access to their networks. It normally means that only one of your devices (such as a computer, base station, or router) can connect directly to your modem at any given time.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

On the iPad you can stream videos, photos, or music from the Video, Photos, Music, and YouTube apps to an Apple TV OR just stream music to an AirPort Express Base Station.

Can I play music or youtube music! from my iPhone and iPad on my Sonos through Apple AirPort Express.
I believe I can, although it is not totally clear how to do so.
Can I use an old Apple AirPort Express (1st generation) or do only the newer versions of the Apple AirPort Express do the trick ?

  • So does the Apple Airport Express take the place of the "Charter" modem and router we already have in our house?

We purchased the Apple Airport Express and in our home have 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 1 iPod, 1 MacBook, and two *D* computers and a Brother printer along with Apple TV and a projector.
    1. How do we get them all to mirror the content of the various devices onto the TV or the projector?
    2. Can we now unplug the *Ch* equipment from our cable source and plug in the airport express?
Putting all the pieces together is just a little beyond us at this moment. Maybe it will click with a little help. Thanks!
    "Stuck" in Montgomery

I'm pretty sure you will find that the Airport Express will not work with your router unless it's an Airport Extreme Base Station.
You can do two things with the Airport Express. You can connect it by USB or Ethernet cable to a device like a printer that does not have wireless capability and provide a wireless connection to your router provided the two devices will "talk" to each other.
You can connect it to a Mac to provide audio streaming wirelessly.
You may be able to use it with your projector provided it has its own wireless capability, but I don't know if an Airport Express will stream video. Same for your TV.
In fact for your home I'm not sure the AEX would be of much use except to connect to your Mac in order to stream audio to another wireless device in your home. But only if you can get the AEX to work with your router or replace the router with an AEBS (which you could only do if your current router is a discrete device connected to your Charter cable modem.)

  • I am trying to link our xbox and PC into our wireless network.  I am using an apple airport express and it is asking me for a WEP Key.  Where can I find my wep key?

I am tyrying to link our xbox and PC int oour wireless network.  I am using an apple airport express and it is asking for my WEP Key.  Where do I find it?

You should be able to setup WPA / WPA2 access, rather than WEP - which is old an less secure. (Unless your devices are too old for WPA??)
    Try this link: http://spotlight.getnetwise.org/wireless/wifitips/apple/apple-wpa.php
    **Edit
Airport does support the WEP protocol.

My Apple Airport Express is blinking Amber and I cannot find it with the utility

Hi, had the same problem -
    1) Connected AE to Time Capsule with Ethernet cable - Configured it  - All worked fine
    2) Removed Ethernet cable between AE og TC - All worked fine
    3) Unpluged my AE from the socket outlet (power off) and pluged it inn where its supposed to be (2m from my Time Capsule)
    4) Now Airport Utility do not find me AE (after all i reconfigured through the Etheret calbe) ????
    A) Seems that Airport Utility are not able to "see" any wireless AE, only configurable by Ethernet Cable.
    B) Seems that AE are not able to reconnect to configured network after a power loss.
This is a little bit ****** - older airport utility had none of the problems (A and B)

  • Apple Airport Express and PC Laptops - Wireless Network Help

    Hello all,
I have two Wi-Fi enabled laptops running Windows XP, an Apple Airport Express unit and a Netgear DG-632 Modem/Router.
At present the DG-632 is running in modem mode and is connected to one laptop using the ethernet connection. The Netgear DG-632 Modem/Router has one ethernet connection and one USB connection.
My understanding is that if i run one laptop off the USB connection on the Modem/Router and connect the the DG-632 to the ethernet connection then the laptop on USB has to be turned on for the second laptop to access the wireless network.
Assuming the above is true (i am very likely wrong), it would be nice if both laptops were able to access the internet wirelessly via the Airpot Express Unit.
However, being a complete novice at networking, i am little confused about how to do this?
Any help, tutorials or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm new. I have a Dell Laptop XP and my wife has a
dell desktop XP . I have DSL with a Linksys wireless
router. After many hours on the phone I was able to
get the ineternet set up for me and my wife.
After all this I found that my Airport Express system
couldn't connect to my stereo. It seems that the
router wireless connection pays no attention to
Airport. Apple says that they could set up another
wireless system to work for Itunes by using my
    wireless card in the Laptop.
But... I can't listen to the music and surf the net
at the same time. A linksys person has tried to allow
Linksys to accept and proper installation to the
router. I tried is but it didn't work.
    Dell Laptop   Windows
    XP   Wireless card and Linksys
    router
    Dell
Laptop   Windows XP   Wireless card and
    Linksys router
Sort of new here and to the AE, but have a Dell Desktop and Tosbiba laptop both running XPHome SP2, and on dialup
The Linksys router is hooked to the desktop with an ethernet cable. In the office.
The AE is in the living room and works great for surfing and ITunes.
The only way I could get my AE to work as an access point for dialup and stream ITunes from the laptop to the home theater was to use the setup found here.
    http://rgbdream.com/?p=44
The only problem I had with the setup was do not use the $ when entering the password. And had to use a proxy server on the desktop for sharing the dialup. LOL no hope of any broadband here.
    Hope this is some help.

  • Clicking sound originating from Airport Express firmware 7.5.2 and later

    Hello,
I have submitted a bug report through Apple Developer Connection (I am a registered developer). By posting this here I want to get support for our case: Make Apple fix the Airport Express firmware.
    Summary:
The Airport Express device has a bug which appeared first in version 7.5.2. It produces a "clicking" sound when using AirPlay to transport music from an iPhone or a Mac, when certain frequencies are being played. This is not depending on the attached amplifier or headphones, digital or analog output, network settings (network created by Airport Express or not), Mac or iPhone used, audio cable or power supply involved or due to bad quality of the sound file played. The problems are not there when audio is played directly from a Mac or an iPhone through headphones or optical out. We and my colleagues (developers and audophiles) have ruled out all the other options. The problem boils down to a change in the Airports firmware starting with 7.5.2. In 7.4.2 the clicking sound is not there.
    Steps to Reproduce:
Play the following song via AirPlay on an Airport Express device having firmware 7.5.2 or higher. The Airport Express being used in our tests is the model produced from March 2008 – June 2012. Attach high fidelity headphones (like Bowers & Wilkins P5, which we used) to Airport Express. Alternatively use a very good amplifier/loundspeaker setup. We also reproduced the bug for example on an Onkyo A-9070 amplifier with both optical and analog connection - there is no difference there. The loudspeakers we used are passive Dynaudio X12.
Play track no. 6 from the "Songs without words" album: http://itunes.apple.com/de/album/lieder-ohne-worte-op.-67-no.-2/id209380163?i=20 9381206
Listen to this solo piano piece carefully for at least 40 seconds. You will notice a clicking sound with high frequencies. This clicking is *not* there in firmwares 7.4.2 and earlier.
    Expected Results:
Perfect audio quality as in firmware 7.4.2 and earlier.
    Actual Results:
Reproducible clicking sounds in high frequencies.
    Regression:
This problem appeared first in Airport Express firmware 7.5.2 and has not been fixed yet. It can also be observed in the current version of Apple TV (as of September 16th).
    Notes:
This issue, while not being recognized by the casual listener, makes AirPlay unusable for critical listening - at least when using any firmware after 7.4.2. I would love to use the current firmware (which produces a much more stable connection), but I (and other audiophile AIrplay users) would love to see this issue fixed first.
Here is a thread that concludes - as we did - that Airport firmware 7.5.2 and later is the source of the problem. It is not the hardware, neither Apple's, nor the connected devices:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17296916#17296916
    Hope this helps!
    Best,
    Gabriel

I'm having the exact same problem. As a classical music lover, this is driving me nuts. It's especially noticable in soft passages in the music, when the volume is turned up high. When the dynamics increase, the little pops/clicks appear (they sound a bit like static noise, as someone stated earlier in this thread). It happens at irregular intervals. When you play pop music, the clicks will disappear (drown) in the music. But for true audiophiles who listen mainly to jazz and classical music this is a severe problem.
I have checked everything and it's definitely an airplay issue. My apple lossless files are 100% okay and play without any problem, except when streamed via airplay. Also, it makes no difference whether you use the analogue or the optical ouptut from the airport express.
I've created a sine frequency sweep myself in Adobe Audition, from 20 Hz up to 20000 Hz with a duration of 25 seconds and a level of -6 dB.
When played through airplay, the clicks always start to appear after 4 seconds in the sweep, only to disappear at 23 seconds.
The clicks manifest themselves at different volume levels. To my ears, they make the same sound as when you change the volume in iTunes when streaming music through airplay. Only when you set the volume in iTunes extremely low, the clicks will disappear.
Apple engineers should use a frequency sweep to recreate the problem, as this is very revealing.
PS: file format isn't an issue here. I've converted the Apple Lossless file to MP3, and it makes no difference at all.

  • About My New Apple Airport Express 802.11n Wi-Fi Router

Yesterday on Saturday after i finshed work I Went out & Bought a New Apple Airport Express 802.11n Wi-Fi Router for My Apple iMac Computer & for My Apple iPhone 5 & Apple TV & I Set it up & everything & everything worked out well so i had a question about it, that Green Solid New Light on Apple Airport Express is it suppose to always stay on even if my Apple iMac Computer is Sleeping like other Wi-Fi Routers??? cause i'm wondering cause it looks Very Nice & White & Shiny & New & i don't really want it to Fail on me cause i do like it & it does not take up a lot of space witch is a good thing so just had to ask???
how many years will My Apple Airport Express Wi-Fi Router will last for since it's as Big an an Apple TV, just was wondering if this thing is really strong & stuff to like hold out for years time maybe???
will My Apple Airport Express Wi-Fi Router Software ever get Outdated like my other Wi-Fi Router??? & they stopped making that Belkin Wireless n Router that i had & they stopped Updating it's Software & then The Software became not usable at all so I Had to go out & buy an Apple Airport Express 802.11n Wi-Fi Router.

    Hi Byron,
on the first question: take a look at your manual; I have a different router, and on it the light stays on all the time, but I don't know if the Airport works the same way. On mine, it simply means that it is on and ready in case you need it. You should worry when there is no light, LOL.
Second question: with electronics, can't tell at all how long they will be good for. They are made to be compatible with a certain range of devices and software - and will be updated for a while when those devices and softwares are updated. After a while, too many new routers are available with too many new features that are compatible with new devices and softwares, so it's not worth updating the old ones. It's a question of money - they don't want to give you free updates forever, they want you to buy a new piece of equipment.
Third: yes, it will at some point. Everything technology/electronics related is outdated - some very quickly: you buy a new one and the next week you see an ad for a "new, improved" one. Same principle: they want you to buy again.

I have a 3g hspa dongle.I want to know that my dongle can be used with Apple Airport Express utility.I want to connect my dongle into Apple Airport Express utility and share the internet with my ipad, ipod and iphone.I want to know how to do this?

Hi Bob, just wondering if i use a Ethernet USB adapter, connect USB end to the 3G dongle and the ethernet end, with a small ethernet cable to the WAN port of the airport express, is it still possible to use the internet in the dongle through airport express?

  • My Apple Airport express loses connection

We have a 3-4 months old Apple airport express. When it works, it works really well.
We use it for streaming shows etc on the television via Apple tv and obviously to go on the internet.
We have 1 iphone 5s and 1 iphone 6, 2 iPad Air, 1 MB Air and 1 MB pro Retina so all our devices are pretty much Apple.
The express router is connected straight to the internet cable from the wall, so there is no router in between or anything. I can always connect with the router, but internet is not always pooring through. In other words, im always logged on the wifi, but it seems as something is often blocking the internet. It definitely has something to do with the router because I can be on the internet via the router on the macbook air while both iPads won't work.
I often solve the problem by opening network preference - assist me - continue - log on the net again - type in my password for the computer and then it works again. But this is obviously not a sustainable solution. And this is also not an option on the iPads, so when it doesnt work on the iPads it just doenst work... :-/
    What is the issue?

    No one?
