Apple Airport Express is not recognized

I bought an Apple Airport Express to help boost and/ or extend my Wi-Fi. Prior to this, I was using a combination modem/ router that my ISP provided. Anyway, I attached an Ethernet cable from my router to the WAN port on the back of my Airport Express. As I understand, it should then appear in Airport Utility, but nothing shows up. The device just blinks amber green. The error message in Airport Utility says, “No Configured Airport Base Stations have been found.” My Internet is otherwise working fine, but Airport Utility fails to recognize it. What could be wrong?

Power up the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express firmly for 10 seconds
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
If Mavericks or the iOS devices cannot see the Express, you have a defective Express.
Note....the Express will not "boost" or "extend" the signal from your wireless router wirelessly....unless you have another Apple router.

My airport Express is not recognizing an IP address. How can this be fixed?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

Afer spending an hour on the phone with apple support center and not being able to correct this problem... I finally got it working after talking with a friend! So for those who have the same problem, the solution was in the end quite simple! Un plug the APE and plug it back in while pressing the reset button. Then connent the APE to your computor via a usb cable. The computor will then recognise the APE and you will be able to configurate for your liking! It can the be unplugged and placed where you want it to go in the house as the computor will now recognise it! I guess it was just to simple a solution for the help center to think about it! good lick to all!!

While I appreciate you trying to help, I'm not a fan of being talked to like a child. If you want to see what version of iOS X I'm using, look no further than the title of my question (10.7.5, there, I saved you having to scroll up).
Yes I read what you saying IOS and I thought you made a mistake because Mac operating system is called OSX and not IOS.
Now, I can only assume that your next idea is for me to restart my computer and/or try a different cable. Let's pretend I'm not a complete moron and continue from beyond those steps.
Well, my next idea would be figure it out yourself, if you think answering question is below you.

  • My airport Express is not recognizing Ethernet cables, therefore not allowing my cable modem to connect to it. This is resulting in no Internet connection. I upgraded the firmware to 7.5.2 and it attempts to connect but just keeps flashing. Any thoughts?

I've tried other routers in place of the airport and they work fine, but I really want to use the airport instead due to the wireless speaker addition.

I assumed that you have already tried using different "known good" Ethernet cables, just in case the one you have now is faulty ... correct?
Assuming the answer is "yes," the other option would be to perform a complete power recycle of your networking gear. This is something that should be performed whenever making network equipment changes.
    Please try the following:

  • Apple AirPort Express - not supported by BT Home H...

The mystery of the vanishing AirPort Express makes the above conclusion inevitable. I have two, old and new, solely for iTunes music distribution. Even when they do show on my wireless network, I get the famous AirPort Utility error 10057.
They do work from time to time, sometimes for long periods; then resetting the Home Hub usually brings them back (or not).
I'm so exasperated by the Home Hub that in the recycling bin it goes. I'll buy a proper wireless router.
Wake-up BT - Apple are bigger than you!

I thought I'd post an update on my odyssey to get an Apple AirPort Express working under Windows 7 for iTunes
The new ASUS dual band ADSL router is nice... though network setup was not entirely painless
More flexible firmware than the BT Home Hub is a real plus
Getting the AirPorts configured was not Apple-easy. The AirPort Utility does not like a thing called "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" - find your wireless adaptor Properties via Network and Sharing Center and uncheck the offending item. Beware, Windows 7 homegroups like it, so you may have to switch it on again later. Pro-tem, that should get your AirPort found by the utility.
This left me with working AirPorts which disappear from the network when not used - so you have to switch them off and on every time you want to use them.
The only solution I've come across (set Wireless Security to WPA2 Personal on AirPort and Router) hasn't worked...

  • Apple airport express not recognised

I have a new iMac running on Yosemite and an old(ish) first gen apple airport express which allows me to stream itunes to my nice big speaker and that works great.
Also have an Apple TV, an iphone and an iPad and they all talk to each other fine.
Have bought another, second hand, first gen (model number A1088) apple airport express as I want to get another nice speaker for another room so I can have music streaming throughout the house.
However, when I plug this second apple airport express in all I get is a flashing amber light and it's not recognised on the airport utility on the mac or on my iphone.
When I disconnect my original apple airport express and leave the 2nd one still connected I "think" my Mac detects it but it says the Airport Utility does not work with this device.
    Can anyone please help?
I have power cycled everything (inc modem/router) and no change.
    Thanks

Believe it or not I have got it all working.
I ethernet connected the troublesome AE to my router, downloaded AU 5.6 and configured it to join my existing home wifi network.
Yes my iMac's and iPhone's AU won't allow me to change any settings but they both now see it.
If I want to make any changes I just use the AU 5.6 that I now have on my iMac. And any changes I want to make on the AE which I have been successfully using I just use the Yosemite AU.
All good. Now off to go shopping for a nice powered speaker.

  • Apple Airport Express NOT Working! Internet IS working.

I have Apple Airport Express.  It is wireless and multiple computers as well as cable are all able to access internet because of this handy device.  However I have unplugged it because I was having an issue with Apple TV... and I plugged everything back in and I won't get internet.  I called my internet provider and they had me hook up the internet directly to my laptop (skipping the Apple Airport Express) and now I have internet again!    However, I only have internet on the one computer that is hooked up... not all the computers/TVs/Apple TVs/iPad in the house.
It isn't an issue with the internet provider because I can get internet.  I can't help but think that it is a problem with the Apple Airport Express.  I've unplugged everything, waited a few minutes and plugged everything back in.  I've done this a few times.  Nothing seems to work.  What am I doing wrong?  I was working fine before the first time I unplugged (and that was due to another Apple device, I think, going wrong).
    Help!

    Morning zannahdoll,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Some Internet service providers use a method called "hardware access provisioning" to regulate access to their networks. It normally means that only one of your devices (such as a computer, base station, or router) can connect directly to your modem at any given time.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
AirPort Base Station: ISP provisioning may prevent Internet connection via broadband (cable or DSL)

    Hope this helps,

  • My Iphone will not accept the Apple airport express as the Wi fi network so I can facetime, how do I fix?

My Iphone (I have a 4s and 3G) will not accept the apple airport express as the wi fi network so that I can face time. How do I resolve this?

What are the exact specifications of the wireless network you've created? (If you're not sure, open Airport Utility on your computer and check the Radio Mode in the Wireless tab). Bear in mind:
    - iPhones earlier than the iPhone 4 cannot connect to an "n-only" network - they need b/g compatibility.
    - No iPhone can connect to a 5GHz network (Compatibility mode will also fix this).

  • I Phone 5, not connecting to Apple Airport Express Wifi

I have a dual issue, I have comcast internet and am using a Arris TG862 all in one modem/router.  I recently had comast switch the modem to BRIDGE mode so I can use my apple airport express router for WiFi.  Now, since it is active and I can connect via my macbook pro, I pad2, etc I cannot connect via I phone 5.  What is the issue?  Did I set up my airport express incorrectly?
    Thank you

  • Airport Express will not talk to my router

I have 2 airport express stations that are 6.3 and they have always been able to connect to my qwest wireless router no prob. I've recently updated to Leopard and was surprised to see the new airport utility instead of the airport admin and airport setup tools. I like the new utility and interface as it seems less confusing than the old but now I'm having issues.
    1. I can get the new utility to recognize my airport express ONLY when I do a hard reset to the airport express.
    2. As I've done many times in the past, I go through the following setup protocol to join my current wireless network. I simply want to join my current network so I can talk to my stereo and printer wirelessly.
    3. When I finish the setup and hit update, the airport utility updates the express successfully and then attempts to restart the express in order to join my network. This is where the problem lies.
*Here's the error message I get:*
AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting.
The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.
Now, I've tried repeating this process 10 times with both airport express stations and the same result happens? Remember, the only way for the utility to find the express is to hard reset the express. What gives? I bought both of these express stations over a year ago and they've been working fine til now. Because they are older and updated to 6.3, I shouldn't update them to the 802.11n7.3.1 update or should I? Is there something different about this new airport utility in Leopard that is causing the problem?
Like I said, I've done this exact same thing many times and its pretty straight forward but I'm stumped.
    Anyone? Thanks in advance

I've got the solution! It took me some fair hours, though...
It seems the Airport Express can not handle the WEP-encryption properly, nor the 64 or the 128 bit versions. Here's how to work around it:
    1) change your routers encryption to WPA2 with passkey (WPA-2-PSK). You may use the 10-digit code supplied with most routers or any of your own choice.
    2) Change all wireless cards in your network to WPA2-PSK. It can take some time to figure it all out, but in the end you'll fix it. I had to download a new driver for my D-Link card DWL-G650 for instance.
    3) Do the usual config thing with the Airport Express. Choose to connect to an existing network, apply the 10-digit passkey (be sure to choose the WPA2-PSK-option in the drop down-menu).
    4) Off you go! Itunes will find the remote speakers, green lights all over and everybody turns happy...

  • My Apple Airport express loses connection

We have a 3-4 months old Apple airport express. When it works, it works really well.
We use it for streaming shows etc on the television via Apple tv and obviously to go on the internet.
We have 1 iphone 5s and 1 iphone 6, 2 iPad Air, 1 MB Air and 1 MB pro Retina so all our devices are pretty much Apple.
The express router is connected straight to the internet cable from the wall, so there is no router in between or anything. I can always connect with the router, but internet is not always pooring through. In other words, im always logged on the wifi, but it seems as something is often blocking the internet. It definitely has something to do with the router because I can be on the internet via the router on the macbook air while both iPads won't work.
I often solve the problem by opening network preference - assist me - continue - log on the net again - type in my password for the computer and then it works again. But this is obviously not a sustainable solution. And this is also not an option on the iPads, so when it doesnt work on the iPads it just doenst work... :-/
    What is the issue?

    No one?

  • Erro 3256 using Apple Airport Express with Windows XP Pro SP2

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and am trying to stream my music to the Livng room from my PC in my office. I use an Apple Airport Express. I am running iTunes 8.0.1.11 on the computer that isn't getting the signal through. Now please read the entire message before you decide it is the version of iTunes that I am using.
It was getting through just fine on my Denon 3300 but since I switched to a Denon 3802 the signal is not geting through from my main computer. It works fine from the computer sittng adjacent to it.
I also have music on a 2nd computer and am running iTunes 7.6.2.9 on it. The music gets to the living room stereo just fine using the same Apple Airport Express. The signal strength on the computer that is successful in streaming the music to the Apple Airport Express is "excellent". On the computer that is not successful, the signal strenth is "low". Now these computers are adjacent to each other and the signal has to go through the same wall and
exactly the same distance over the same network.
How can it be "excellent" on one and "low" on the other? Is it just a matter of signal strength? How do I fix that?
I keep getting "unknown error occurred 3256"
Help please. Do I have to do something to the network? or???
Remember I am a Windows user, not a Mac user. I do not have a "Configure IPv6" setting anywhere in my preferences. That must be a Mac thing.

Got the error message 3256 after downloaded latest itunes version 8.xx.
After days of reading logs and bullentin boards, uninstalling, hard resets, firewalls experiments, etc, I found solution for me. Following firmware upgrade to airport express solved. When you go to Apple download center and search for airport revisions only the MAc version pops up. However they do have this one for windows. Give it a try. Good luck.

  • Airport Express no longer recognized

I've had my Airport Express a good many years to stream music wirelessly and it's worked very well. Now I'm wondering if it's reached its end of life. I use it exclusively to stream music wirelessly from iTunes on my MacBook Pro and my Windows 7 desktop. The situation is that the AX is plugged into my stereo system and the green light is on, but neither computer can find the AX - it's as if it's not there. I unplug the AX to reset it and the yellow light flashes for a few minutes then goes to green. For a brief amount of time, the AX shows up on the computers, and I can ping it successfully. Then it disappears again but the light on the AX stays green. I attached the AX directly to the router via an ethernet cable and reconfigured the device but the same thing happened.
My router is a Belkin N+
So am I missing something obvious or is time to say adios to the AX? If the latter, what are my best options to wirelessly stream music from computer to stereo?
    Thanks for any help.

I had the same Issue. My Internet connection was working, but slow. Amber flashing light on the airport Express. Airport Utility was not recognizing the airport express.
In my case, after updating my mac software, the airport firmware was out of date.
Here what I did to solve it.
    1) Connect to another wireless network if possible, or directly to your modem via ethernet.
    2) As Above, unplug the airport express, plug it back in after 30 sec.
    3) Airport Utility should now recognize the express. if your firmware is out of date as mine was (mine had never been updated) it will inform you in airport utility.
    4) Click download firmware update within airport utility. (As #1 I had to join another network for this, but you could also plug directly into your modem)
    5) Software, installs, express reboots. order is restored.
now i'm back up to great surfing speeds.
    Hope it helps.

  • Airport Express will not allow any downloads over the network, why is this and what can I do to fix it?

I own an Apple Airport Express station. I am attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the airport is hooked into the network via ethernet cord. While the first few months of operation have gone smoothly for this router, over the last few weeks any and all downloads have failed to complete over the airport. I moved outside and used the official University's wifi and the downloads worked, meaning it's not a UNC network problem (to my knowledge). All file types affected include song downloads through iTunes, app downloads on my iPhone, software downloads like Google Chrome, Finale, Microsoft Word updates, etc. I have tried this on both my Lenovo with Windows 7 and my Macbook Pro to troubleshoot hardware problems and it doesn't work on either of them. I have restored the router to factory settings twice now and still it does not work. Sorry for the length of this, just wanted to pass along as much info as I could.

The fact that you can access all downloads while the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is not directly attached to the University's network indicates that the University's IT department may not allow downstream routers connected to their network without first registering it with them. This is often the case, and it is not uncommon that most universities do not allow you to do so in the first place. I would suggest that you start by contacting your IT department to see if this is allowed, and if so, they should be able to assist you with the proper configuration of your AX.
