Apple AirPort Express with Airtunes and Netgear WPN824v2 Router

I'm having some trouble getting the AirPort Express with Airtunes to connect to a Netgear WPN824v2 network.
Details:
- Router: Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824v2
- Wireless Network Security: WEP
- Computer: MacBook Pro
- OS: OS X 10.4.10
- AirPort card in computer: this works fine - no problems
- AirPort Express with Airtunes: the setup routine goes OK, but then the unit cannot connect to the wireless network; the light blinks amber.
Could the problem relate to the password (Hex versus ASCII) or perhaps WEP versus WPA?
Any / all suggestions welcome. Thanks.

sonicdubster, Welcome to the discussion area!
Are you following the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode?
Is the AirPort Express (AX) placed in an area where it can receive a good wireless signal from the Netgear?
Does the AX connect if you disable wireless encryption?
WPA (or WPA2) is much more secure and less troublesome than WEP. If all of your equipment supports WPA, I would switch to WPA.

  • Airport Express with Airtunes help!

I'm new to the wireless world so my question is why would I get the blinking yellow light on my Airport Express with Airtunes even when I'm within 5 feet of my G4 that has a airport card installed (802.11B). I also tried putting it in the living room which is one floor down and got the same thing.
I updated the firmware for the Airport Express with Airtunes but have not updated the airport card in the G4 because I'm unsure at the apple download site which software to download.
System profiler reports the airport card is 9.52 firmware version.
So is this what I update to: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120097
The music is only cutting out from time to time but I would still like to see a green light on the Airport Express, its odd that it blinks yellow stating that I have a weak connection.
I'm not sure updating the firmware will help the weak signal, I used the airport utility to setup the Airtunes, but maybe there is a different way to configure the network to make it stronger, like I said I'm totally new to this stuff.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The blinking light doesn't indicate a weak wireless signal, it indicates that you do not have an internet connection established.
Are you using the AE for music streaming without an internet connection?
Haven't tried this myself, but it might eliminate the blinking light:
    1. Open Airport Admin Utility and double click your AE to open the configuration.
    2. Select the Internet tab.
    3. Set to configure manually and enter:
    IP address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router Address 192.168.1.1
    DNS servers 192.168.1.1
If this doesn't work, there probably isn't much you can do except establish a good connection to another router to get the light to turn green. The above numbers shouldn't be terribly important either since you are just trying to get the Airport to think it has an established connection.

Yes, it is one of the things AirPort Express was specifically designed for.

  • Iphone, Ipod Touch - Send tunes to Airport Express with Airtunes

Does anyone know if they plan to update the iphone firmware with the ability to send your itunes music straight to your airport express with airtunes bass station. It really seems like a no brainer to me that this be added!

No one here knows if Apple has any plans to include this option with a future update, but this would drain the iPhone's battery in a very short period of time.

how do  i set up apple airport express with my wi fi

What is the make & model of the wireless router that is currently providing your Wi-Fi network? What is your goal for the AirPort Express base station? To extend this Wi-Fi network or for streaming iTunes/sharing a USB printer ... or both? Finally which model of Express do you have?

  • Erro 3256 using Apple Airport Express with Windows XP Pro SP2

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and am trying to stream my music to the Livng room from my PC in my office. I use an Apple Airport Express. I am running iTunes 8.0.1.11 on the computer that isn't getting the signal through. Now please read the entire message before you decide it is the version of iTunes that I am using.
It was getting through just fine on my Denon 3300 but since I switched to a Denon 3802 the signal is not geting through from my main computer. It works fine from the computer sittng adjacent to it.
I also have music on a 2nd computer and am running iTunes 7.6.2.9 on it. The music gets to the living room stereo just fine using the same Apple Airport Express. The signal strength on the computer that is successful in streaming the music to the Apple Airport Express is "excellent". On the computer that is not successful, the signal strenth is "low". Now these computers are adjacent to each other and the signal has to go through the same wall and
exactly the same distance over the same network.
How can it be "excellent" on one and "low" on the other? Is it just a matter of signal strength? How do I fix that?
I keep getting "unknown error occurred 3256"
Help please. Do I have to do something to the network? or???
Remember I am a Windows user, not a Mac user. I do not have a "Configure IPv6" setting anywhere in my preferences. That must be a Mac thing.

Got the error message 3256 after downloaded latest itunes version 8.xx.
After days of reading logs and bullentin boards, uninstalling, hard resets, firewalls experiments, etc, I found solution for me. Following firmware upgrade to airport express solved. When you go to Apple download center and search for airport revisions only the MAc version pops up. However they do have this one for windows. Give it a try. Good luck.

  • Airport express with Snow and wired Mac Mini?

    Hi,
I am trying to help my parents set up airport express.
They have a Mac Mini with no wireless card connected by ethernet to a Snow base station. That is fine, and computer sees the base station in Airport Admin. However, when I try to go to Airport Setup Assistant to set up the Airport Express, I get a message saying that the computer doesn't have a wireless card (which I know) and doesn't allow me to continue.
Is there a known thing where you can't use Airport Express with a Snow base station without a wireless card? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Nevermind, I guess I answered my own question.

  • Airport Express with D-link 624+ wireless router.

Have got a D-link wireless router connected. Wireless internet works fine on its own, but I cannot connect the apple airport express to the wireless internet, so I have to keep switching connections and am unable to use the internet at the same time as streming music to my stereo....what am I doing wrong?
please help me. I thought I knew computer gear, but was SOOOO wrong.

I had a DL 624+ (and have since abandoned it). I had a lot of instability problems with it, which seemed to be related to the Dlink DHCP implementation. I was watching the log on the router, and I was seeing the dlink constantly re-issuing DHCP addresses to the macs on the network - it would renew the addresses twice a minute.
I had seen some posts which suggested that there were problems with either long DHPC client names, or client names which had non-alphanumeric characters in them. (Note if your machine name has spaces, this could happen.)
So, you might want to try:
-Assigning static IP addresses and see if the problem goes away
-checking your DHCP client names to make sure they are between 8-12 characters
    Hope this helps!

  • Airport express with itunes and ethernet

I have a question on the airport express and apologize if this is already answered elsewhere, I searched the forum and did not find an answer.
I am using my time capsule as the basis of my wifi network at the house supplying service to my iMac, Macbook, and other wireless devices with no problems. I have three airport express devices.  The first is used to supply a USB drop to the printer.  A second to provide an ehternet drop for the DirectTV.  I recently purchased one of the new model airport express devices to run an airtunes cable to my stereo.
The airport express (old style) providing the ethernet drop to the DirectTV previously had been used to provide iTunes to the stereo, but I could not get it to do both ethernet bridge to DirectTV and the iTunes to the stereo.  That is why I purchased the new one (one to do each job).  Is it possible to have one of these devices provide both the ethernet drop for the TV box and the iTunes?  I would rather only have one device tied up behind the entertainment center (less clutter and free up the third device for other uses).
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

  • Airport express with mac and windows

No problems at all with mac and airport express but I have a vaio with window xp sp2 and a pc with vista home premium and even if they connect to the wireless network they cannot receive an ip address. How can I solve this problem? ( As always, we have to waste a lot of time when we work with microsoft operating systems... ;-)) )
    Thanks

Thank you for providing me with the exact model of your PowerBook. This model was available with either an optional or built-in AirPort Card. This card is only able to connect to 802.11b wireless networks with a maximum bandwidth of 11 Mbps. This card is also capable of connecting to wireless networks that use the TKIP encryption protocol. This protocol is used in either the WEP or WPA standard. The card is NOT capable of connecting to wireless networks that use the AES/CCMP encryption protocol that is part of the WPA2 standard.
However, some of the earliest versions of the AirPort Card did not work with WPA's TKIP implementation ... so it is possible that you may not be able to connect to an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) configured for "WPA/WPA2 Personal." It may also be problematic to connect to the same AX if it is configured to use one of the 802.11n modes that offer compatibility to 802.11b/g clients. This latter item does not sound like an issue as you are connecting, but wireless security does.
WEP introduces its own set of "problems." Not to mention, that is it completely un-secure. The following Apple Support article may be helpful in getting all of your wireless clients connected when using WEP: Joining an encrypted WEP or WPA Wi-Fi network

  • Apple Airport Express "restarting" over and over

    Hi guys!
This is my very first post, and I really hope you can help me.
I've got an airport express, and it has always worked like a charm, however, a few days ago it was like it was resetting every few min. Sometime it would work fine for 20 min., and then it would become unstable again. When it resets it's solid amber --> flashing amber --> green. Which I guess is pretty standard.
At first I thought it was something with the internet cord, so I changed it - didn't help.
The I though it could be something with the power, so I changed the power cord - no success.
I doesn't "reset" but it's like it's resetting. All my network settings are still there when it starts up again.
    I'm running the 7.5.2 version.
I'm hoping that some experts i cyberspace knows what to do
    Thanks!

  • I have a nokia siemens router. Can I use apple airport express with this to expand my wi-fi range

I HAVE A NOKIA SIEMENS ROUTER. THROUGH THAT I AM USIING WI-FI NETWORK AT MY HOME. I WANT TO EXTEND ITS RANGE SO I BUY AIRPORT EXPRESS. CAN I USE WITH THIS ROUTER

Please do not type in all capital letters. It is difficult to read and appears as if you are SHOUTING.
You can use the AirPort Express to provide more wireless coverage for your router if you connect an Ethernet cable from the router to the AirPort Express and configure it to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as your Siemens router.
If you are asking if you can use the Express to extend the wireless network using wireless only, it is extremely unlikely that this will work since Apple's "extend" a wireless network feature appears to work only with other Apple products.
As far as we know, it is not compatible with devices from any other manufacturer.

  • Using Apple AirPort Express with my new iPhone

Hello! I recently purchased an iPhone, and I wanted to also buy AirPort Express to have a good WiFi connection. Right now, I have a DSL Modem that converts the phone line into an ethernet cable. I am confused on how I can use AirPort if I can't spit the ethernet port at the DSL Modem (it won't work if I do so) and I need it to still run my PC.
Can I just plug in AirPort Express and it has instant WiFi? If not, what are my solutions to getting an ethernet port to my AirPort?
    Thanks in advance!
    Ethan

    To answer your questions directly:
    1. Can I just plug in the AirPort Express and go ahead and connect, or does it need ethernet to run? Answer: the Airport Express must itself be connected to the internet in order to provide internet access to your iPhone. Therefore - the Airport Express must be cabled via ethernet to an internet connection.
    2. How can I get ethernet to my AirPort Express without interrupting my DSL modem? Answer: you must use one of the two solutions I described above. Any solution you decide to use must somehow share your DSL modem connection with both your iPhone and your PC - and the the device required to do that job (like an Airport Express) must itself be directly connected to your DSL modem. Sharing the internet connection provided by a DSL modem is complicated (much more complicated than simply "splitting" the cable), and one of the many functions that can be performed by the Airport Express device is internet connection sharing but alas, only with wireless devices.

  • Airport Extreme base station and Netgear DG834 router won't talk

    Hi all,
I just bought a netgear DG834 adsl2+ modem router. However, I haven't managed to get my AEBS to talk to it (the LEDs on the right doesn't light up when trying).
Connecting to internet via an ethernet cable to the router works; connecting to the AEBS (with Airport Admin Utility for instance) works too. BUT, I cannot connect to the net wirelessly.
I suspect I should modify the router's firewall or something to that effect... but I'm no network expert. I have tried toggling the DHCP settings and IP distribution on and off, etc.
There is a slight possibility that the AEBS may be faulty, although the LEDs all light up even if once only.
Please, can anyone help me out?
    Thanks in advance,
    Simon
    PowerBook G4, 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

The AEBS gets given an IP address (192.254.xxx.xxx), which I cannot use for reserving on the netgear router (illegal address, it tells me - it should be 192.168.0.3 or something shouldn't it?)
The 169.254.x.x address is typically seen if a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server is not found, a valid and unique address in the range of 169.254.0.0 to 169.254.254.255 inclusive and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 will be assigned.
I suggest that you perform a "hard reset" on the AEBS, and then, set it up as a bridge with the instructions I provided earlier.
Also, should I do anything about the RIP direction and/or version on the router? It's currently set to Direction: both, version: 1
Let me get a chance to download and read the User's Guide for your Netgear DG834. Which version do you have: v2 or v3, or newer? Since the AEBS will be in bridge mode, RIP, which allows a router to exchange routing info with other router, should not be important.

  • AIRPORT EXRESS with airtunes - MAC MINI RECEPTION

    HI MAC BOFFS,
I have just managed to configure a an airport express with airtunes, and managed to get it on the network, but music keeps dropping from the remote speakers. When i get sound it is excellent quality but only for a few seconds.
I have noticed that my reception bar on the top rights does fluctuate and at best is half (and has always) but for internet purposes it never bothered me.
The appartment is stud walls and i have put the router on ch 1 if this helps.:(
Is there anything i should do?
    thank you.
    i sot

    1) The Mac Mini doesn't have great wireless reception. Try experimenting with the Mac mini in the same room to make sure that it is indeed the reception causing your headache. If it is, there are some Mac Mini wireless reception hacks on the 'net.
    2) Are you in an apartment? It is possible that there are many wireless networks around from your neighbors and if they are unencrypted your Mac / AE may be hopping between different networks.
