Apple alternative to Calibre (epub organiser)

Apple alternative to Calibre (epub organiser).
I would like a program/software that will allow me to edit and organise my pub files. I currently have 8200 files, and some haven't been saved with the correct author, title, series name etc. I would like to be able to edit the metadata of these files and have them in a library so that i can sort and search on all of them.
Key features that i am interested in...
Edit metadata
Organise files
Connect with my eReader
Search and apply covers
Alternatives that i have looked at already...
Alfa eBooks Manager - Not made for Apple
BookONO - Keeps crashing
Kitabu - Cannot edit the metadata
Adobe Digital Editions - Cannot edit the metadata
Lucidor - Doesn't Launch
ClearView - Cannot edit the metadata
Jutoh - Cannot edit the metadata
I would really appreciate everyone/anyones help to find an alternative to both edit and organise my ebook library.
Please also correct me if i am incorrect with any of the above statements, or perhaps have a better phrase that i can search on.

If you migrate your iBooks database, your modified metadata should go along with it.
But you are correct, it will not modify the underlying ePub file. Is that something that you would want to do? I wrote my iBookplate app to work the same way and avoid modifying the actual ePub content. But I suppose now that Yosemite is taking on that role, I could repurpose iBookplate and have it modify the metadata directly and make it more independent from iBooks. It would be quite easy to do. iBookplate was selling well until Yosemite and I couldn't justify charging money for it. Alas, I will probably have to pull the old "iBookPlate Pro" trick. Such is life. Check the Etresoft iBookplate web site sometime in April.
Disclaimer: Although iBookplate is currently free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

  • Can anyone tell me how to solve Flash Player on iPad 2. I understand Adobe not supported is there away around this or Apple alternative

Having just purchased ipdad 2 I am noticing that Flash Player is not supported can anyone please tell me how to get round this or suggest apple alternative. It's very annoying considering that flash is used in so much digital display

The Skyfire browser is the best solution I have found, so far. It's a browser that converts the videos on the fly. It doesn't work for other types of flash (games, ads, etc) but it does a good job with videos.

I see your location is UK, I'm not sure if the app is available in the UK.

  • Can we output a 'fixed-layout' (Apple's variety), Enhanced EPUB?

This is (of course), not a true 'EPUB', but instead Apple's bastardization of the format to allow 'enhanced' illustrated books to be sold in their bookstore.
But InDesign can produce some terrific interactive output for regular 'flowing' EPUBS for iBookstore/iPads like the work Terry White has demo'd.
Between the use of Articles for maintaining formatting, and the overlay panel I have to imagine one could produce a nice title with IND that would adhere to Apple's standard, but I've found no reference to it.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
    best,
    B.

Thanks for the reply Bob.  Yeah, I think I'm confused.  As I read about DPS it seems I'm not alone in being confused. Part service, part software, expensive, yet touted to the entire digital publishing communit as if it were an option for all, budget notwithstanding.
So to clear things up, here's what I thought/think/hope... and maybe someone can illuminate where I'm right/wrong/close...
On the topic of using InDesign for (Apple's Variety) of EPUB creation specifically for the iBookstore:
         - I can create an EUB layout in Indesign, with full page (bleed), images, and add text frames on top of the background.
         - I can embed fonts (as long as I have the rights), into the doc.
         - This type of layout will not be reflowable, but is zoomable.
         - (I though) I could include simple HTML5 animation for elements such as a buttun to trigger 'Read Along' type function. Maybe simple object translation
            or opacity changes.
         - To make this work as a 'Fixed Layout' I would need to utilize the techniques offered in Liz Castro's miniguide on FIxed Layout on the extracted EPUB
once it was generated by INDe.
         - At this point hopefully... it would pass muster for upload via itunes Producer.
On the topic of DPS: (these are more questions than understandings. But clearly I've missed a few salient points)
         - DPS is not for creating Illustrated books, 'fixed layout books' or picture books (EPUBs), that I can then upload and sell though my own iTunes
           Developer account.
         - DPS seems to be for larger publishing concerns (aka companies with plenty of $$$), that are creating digital magazines.  I'm not sure how the final
product is accessed. if it is a EPUB file or if the product is sold through DPS.
I'm sure there is more that I'm leaving out, but hopefullly some helpful input on these notions will help others and myself wrangle the task of producing iBookstore ready product with Indesign and potentially, DPS.
    thanks,
    B.

  • Attempting to watch a video on a social media site, I get a response you must upload a later version of Flash.   Is there an Apple alternative, or another alternative, or should I just go ahead and download the Flash.

Attempting to watch a video on a popular social media site, I'm asked to download a Flash Media upgrade in order to view.   Is there an Apple alternative, or another alternative, or should I just go ahead and download Flash, but will it still take as long as it used to, to play?

Adobe Flash Player version 11.1.102.55 is the latest and it works fine for me on several Intel Mac's.
Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player
Won't make your download speed any faster, but should play the content in question.

  • 2nd Apple Cinema Display calibration!

i owned one 23" Apple Cinema Display before purchasing a second used 23" Display a year later, to create a dual display editing suite.
While setting up the second monitor i selected the same profile as my first monitor, but noticed that the second monitor was more yellow. i tried calibrating the monitor the get the two to match, this was not successful!
    Can anybody help?

I have a 23" iMac and a 24" Cinema Display, both purchased at the same time, and the colors are not the same. I have calibrated both with a Spyder Pro system and with the Apple software but still get very different hues on the some photo showing on both screens.

  • Apple Cinema Display Calibration

    Hello,
I have tried googling for this, but I have come up empty.
Is it possible for an Apple Cinema Display to be calibrated to the DICOM 14 standard?

In short is a specific logarithmic grayscale gamma, with other requirements.

  • HT204053 Changing apple alternative id

How do I change my "alternate apple ID for my icloud account?
    Thank you

    I had same question.
Can be of interest the reply I got from Apple Customer Support today regarding my case, that is:
you cannot change your Apple ID if it was at any time a .Mac, @me.com or @iCloud.com  email address, even if your subscription has ended or been canceled.
It finally seems Alternate Apple ID behave same way.

  • Is there an Apple alternative to using the Asus videophone. Is there a simple FaceTime alternative for an elderly person to use. iPod and docking station maybe?

I have an elderly parent and recently bought a secondhand Asus SV1T video phone to be able to Skype from my Mac, iPad,iPhone etc.  The device was perfect from a usability point of view but when I set it up discovered that the latest vesion of Skype is not supported on the Asus and there is no hope of Asus issueing a firmware upgrade to fix it. So the question is "is there a facetime alternative that an 85 year old can use".  It needs to be simple to operate, always on and reasonably compact.  One thought I had was using an iPod in a speaker dock for power and amplification.  I assume you can then tailor the front screen to simply show the facetime icon.  Anyone got any thoughts?

You would need to have an iPad with 3G, and pay for cellular data service for it.  If you have a wifi-only iPad, you simply cannot access the Internet anywhere that there is no wifi network available.  You could tether it to a wifi hotspot created by a smartphone, though having a smartphone significantly reduces the need for FaceTime, I would think.

  • Will iBooks ever be an Apple App from the Mac App Store?

Will iBooks ever be an Apple App from the Mac App Store?

Apple does not offer any sort of ibooks/epub reader for OSX , but there are 3rd party apps available and even freeware to import/export from pdf into epub, mobi, kindle and vice versa ( google "calibre" +"epub" ) . I personally love this Mac app called "BookReader" ( MacAppStore ) , which resembles the iOS ibook experience to the best in my oppinion . If Apple would have had such a tool it would most certainly be of this sort  :

  • Monitor calibration no longer works -- eye-one display 2

I have been reasonably successfully calibrating monitors for my Mac Pro desktop (Apple monitor) and Macbook Pro laptop for close to 3 years, with an X-rite eye-one display 2 system.  I'm using Mac OS 10.6.6 on both computers.
Over the last several days, calibrating on both monitors has yielded widely inaccurate profiles, although I'm calibrating the monitors in the same way I always have.  On the MacPro/Apple Cinema, the calibration seems to be proceeding fine, when I've finished the process, "before-after" looks good (i.e., slight change for the better with the new calibration); but when I click "finish calibration" and exit the software, the monitor profile is completely out of whack.  On a given image, about half the colors are now out of gamut (where none were before).  Similar symptoms on my laptop.  I tried downloading the latest software from X-rite on my desktop, and it didn't seem to help.   (On the other hand, when I calibrated my Apple monitor using the "Easy" option in the software, it actually worked almost acceptably, except for the luminance.)
The only way I can even use either computer is to go to system preferences and switch to the monitor to the most recent profile I was using before these troubles began.  (The laptop is actually unusable without going back to an earlier profile, because the drop-down texts at the top of the display are completely blacked out.)
Since this sort of behavior is happening with two different computers and monitors, and I've downloaded the latest software from X-rite (and reinstalled the software from the original installation disk), I'm assuming that the problem is with the puck (hardware).
I realize it may be hard to provide advice, given my difficulty in describing exactly what's happening.   But I'm interested in anyone's advice or thoughts. -- E.g, how to get through to X-Rite for help, altho from other forums, I've gotten the impression they won't be much help; is there any forum specifically devoted to eye-one display 2 (especially if this is the wrong forum).  Is there an expected life for the pucks (mine is about 3 years old)?  Do they sometimes fail in this way?
    Thanks.

It was an extremely frustrating process trying to know if indeed this was the way to calibrate this monitor, and after spending so much time and research was all I could come up with. Did you notice the graphing results of both types of calibration? The red (I believe it was) of the RBG graph line was not lined up at all with the G and B thus the weird color on the monitor, and with the Easy mode, they were at least in line, more or less.

  • Best App to create hand written Annotations with Epub Files

    Hello,
I have been doing alot of experimenting with various apps.  I have yet to find one that i like.  While i would say that Apple ibooks handles the Epubs the best i have seen so far, there are a couple of issues i can't get around.
What i want to do is study my reading material just like i do with a book.  So while i can obviously highlight very easily in the ibooks, i can not circle a part of a page and draw and arrow back to something else that i am making a connection with in my mind.  I also would rather have handwritten Notes verse the yellow sticky note format ibooks does it now.
Do you know of any way to do this in ibooks, or know of any other app that lets you draw directly on the epub so that i can later reference the connections i had while studying?    It seems like a basic feature to me.  I do want this to be as pen and paper like as possible.
I did find that GoodReader does a great job with PDF at doing just htis thing but it does not support epub.
    thanks.

    Hello RoberRM,
I am sorry that I can not give you a convenient solution for our problem. I finally went the same path like with my first book: I mainly target at students with iPads, so I decided to get the best out of iBooks Author to get the full palette of features. I simply did not want to stumble into experiments with uncertain results.
Maybe later on I will go the hard way to copy and paste text and latex part of the books into pages. I will see if it will be worth the efforts...
Besides this the workflow in iBA is simply more effective and time saving. So, at the moment for me everything points into the iBooks Author direction.
Maybe in later versions we will have ways to export into other formats.
Bye and good luck with your work!!

  • I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Epson Printer Software update 2.7 on the 29th of June and now I cannot print anything.  I have contacted Epson and Apple and both have tried to fix the problem without success. I am using a MacBook

Does anybody else have this problem?  Epson and Apple don't have any solution.  The message I get from the printer is as follows:
    Error/library/printers/EPSON/Inkjet Printer2/Filter/rasteroescpII.app/Conents/MacOS/rasteroescpIIfailed

Thanks for the replies guys.  Epson put me through a complex set of instructions to install an earlier driver.  The problem was not solved.  Apple also tried to solve the provlem by getting rid of the printer, unplugging it etc and then re starting and checking computer/printer communication by printing a test page from the system preferences/Pring & Fax options.  This worked proving the the computer and printer are talking to each other.
The printer works properly as a stand alone unit.  That is, I can copy and print and scan and print with no problems.
The Apple support guy didn't suggest any Apple alternative drivers so I assume there aren't any.
Neither the Epson nor Apple assistants seemed interested in the printer generated error message.  I would have thought it would at least provide a clue to the problem to someone with technical expertise.
It seems that there are a lot of problems with the 10.6.8 update so maybe Apple will get to work and bring it up to scratch.  I hope it gets things right soon.

  • Export from Pages to ePub??

Help! I need to export from Pages to epub.  I've read the tutorial a hundred times and it says that when you click on "export" one of the options should be epub.  However,  my only options are pdf, word, or rtf.  What am I doing wrong?

If your admin bought the iWork package as a DVD, Pages '09 version 4.0.3 is really the late version available on this media.
As fruhulda wrote, you must get and apply an updater (maybe you must ask the admin to do that, I know that some of them are a bit picky).
PS, since last wednesday, the best Apple tool to create ePub is the free iBooks Author.

  • Anyone got a GOOD calibration with the Dell 2408WFP?

From everything I've read, this monitor is tough to set up correctly, and perhaps best done w/ a Spyder 3 Elite, or other professional calibration tools...
But I've just got these buttons, my pointer finger, and Apple's & SuperCal calibration programs. Wee!
I've gotten a few decent setups, but since there's just SO MUCH to futz with on this monitor, I was hoping to get some insight here.
I'm running a new MacPro with the Nvidia 8800 card, FWIW.

    Dear Mr. State,
Reading your question I think you desparately need a professional calibrator tool. Then you should forget the Spider 3 and invest in something decent and in the proworld that means Gretag MacBeth and, in combination with simple to use software your choice should be the La Cie BlueEye Pro tested here. This colorimeter should thoroughly solve your problem with every TFT and CRT monitor, is also usable with PC's and you do not need any activation code.
    Best regards,

  • Share same display calibration

I just got two Dell LCD monitors and I calibrated one of them using Apple's display calibration and saved it. For some reason the calibration doesn't show up in the other displays lists of choices. How can I get it to share the exact same calibration?

Have you tried restarting then trying again?
