Apple and Windows Wireless

I'm not sure if someone's posted this before so sorry if this is a repeat! I'm also not terribly computer-savvy so be patient- I'm trying to be descriptive though I've not got a clue what I'm talking about!
My whole family has Dell laptops but I'm thinking seriously of getting an Apple- my question is will an Apple laptop work with the wireless system that is installed at my house? I mean are the operating systems different or what potential problems might I encounter trying to use wireless or just my cable connection at home? Any help would be INCREDIBLY helpful, thank you....

my question is will an Apple laptop work with the wireless system that is installed at my house
Hi Juliae,
No worries. I use both PC's and my PowerBook on the same wired/wireless network without any trouble at all. In fact I'd have to say my PowerBook seems to connect better than my Windows PC.

  • Conflict with WRT160N and Windows Wireless Network Connection

I have a WRT160N router connected to a Verizon FIOS cable modem with five computers (all Windows based) wirelessly connected to the N router.  Four of the computers auto detect the N router connection when the computer starts up using Windows Wireless Network Connection and operate well.  One of the computers, which is the only one running Easylink for router configuration, will not connect through the Wireless Network Connection.  I have to use Easylink to manually connect.  The WNC gives a msg that Windows cannot configure this wireless connection and to configure the wireless connection using Wireless Zero Configuration service.  When I configure WZC correctly the WNC sees all available networks and allows me to select the Advanced Wireless checkbox to allow Windows to connect to the wireless network.  However, when I reboot the computer none of the configuration parameters are saved and I am back to manually connecting using Easylink and going through the entire process again.   Any suggestions?    Thx

Uninstall the EasyLink and connect manually. I think EasyLink 3.0 or later is coming soon ..

  • Will the Apple Time Capsule back up both Apple and Windows in a Virtual macine

Will Apple Time Capsule back up Windows as well as Apple data in a virtual machine with Parallels?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

  • File format for external harddrives between apple and windows

i have a windows desktop and an apple mac book pro. the mac will read files from ntfs system but as read only. the windows will only read exfat or ntfs. what should i do? will exfat work as read and write between the two?

    steve359 wrote:
I suspect it is Windows blocking things, not Mac being unable to keep up.  Thus, will never be fixed.
I doubt that. Apple Mac just doesn't get the format correct. When I've formatted drives exFat on Mac they aren't even readable on an Windows PC. But that same drive, once wiped on Mac and formatted FAT32 on Mac then moved to Windows Windows see them and then formats them exFat. exFat done on any Win version that can do exFat is always seen on both systems.

  • Which Apple and PC wireless security solution?

We have several apple users and pc users so I want to find out what the better security solution will be for our wireless.
Currently we run LEAP and MAC authentication. I also use TKIP and CKIP. We have ACS for radius.
Would PEAP be better? And should I use WPA? I want something that is very secure and very compatible accross platforms and not too much overhead or too complex to manage.

Apple finally added support for WPA and wireless authentication in Panther (OS X 10.3). Make sure you download all the Apple updates when you connect. We are authenticating both PC and Apple users with WPA and PEAP...

  • Heart bleed running apple and windows

Yes. One cannot affect the other, but because it attacked accounts you may have, you should change your passwords. Try reading about what it is.

  • Why can't apple and windows just play nice?

I have a 1st gen 4G nano. I’ve had it for about a year and didn’t have any major issues with it until iTunes version 7.0.1 & iPod version 1.1 came around.
After that update I could no longer sync…at the time my life was too busy to look at the troubleshooting and my nano had plenty of music – the few songs I had downloaded did not justify the time at that point in time.
New Year New Life. I wanted to make sure things in my life were up and running so I decided to take the time to go through the troubleshooting steps and resolve the issue with my nano. I did the 5 Rs and got all the way to the last one Restore. Well my nano did not restore and now I don’t have any music.
Since then I’ve tried the 5 Rs again and always get stuck in the same place. Here is what I do. Please let me know what I need to do to get my nano back online.
    1) Download the newest version of Itunes
    2) Connect the nano to my laptop via the USB cable
(Worth nothing that before Itunes starts up I see the nano on my computer but after I click the OK on the message on Itunes that tells me to restore it disappears from my computer)
    3) Click Ok on message that says, “iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod…”
(At this point the screen on my iPod is on the “do not disconnect” screen.)
    4) Click Restore (only option on the summary screen on iTunes)
(At this point the screen on the iPod is on the main menu.)
    5) Click “Use Newest Version” (also tried “Use Older Version button) on the next pop up window.
    6) Click “Restore” on the next menu
(iPod is still on main menu/charged screen)
    7) Restoring “iPod” window comes up with the restoring bar moving on the screen; however, iPod is still on main menu screen.
    8) After about two minutes an error message that says “The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418).
A couple of additional notes, the iPod is fully charged and I have not added any new programs to my laptop. I do the normal Windows update but I strongly feel that it the root of the problem is within iTunes version 7.0.1 and version 1.1 iPod compatibility. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Do you have another computer available to you? because i was downloading linux on my ipod and it did not want to restore, but i went to my laptop and it did indeed restore, if you suspect IT 7 i recommend downloading a standalone updater for your ipod let me get a link

    hope that resolves it

  • Cisco ISE protocols for ldap and Windows wireless client

Only the protocols below are supported by ise in combination with ldap identity sources.
    EAP-GTC, PAP, EAP-TLS, PEAP-TLS.
Mac OS devices seem to be able to use these but Windows users seem to be having problems. How should windows users connect with ise that only uses ldap?

    Mathieu,
Take a look at the user guide for NAM -
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/vpn_client/anyconnect/anyconnect30/administration/guide/ac04namconfig.html
You will see the protocols support like GTC that should allow you not to have to deploy certs.
    Thanks.

  • If apple app store has an app to sync windows phone with itunes called windows connector, and windows phone and apple are competitors, why doesnt apple make an app for android that syncs itunes without a third party software

I want to simply sync my android and my mac itunes without downloading any software. Windows phone has an app to do that even though apple and windows phone are competitors. Why does android not make an app or why doesnt apple create an software or something

Apple didn't create the Windows Phone app (Microsoft). Apple has nothing to do with this, and Google should do an app for this

  • HP Print Software for MacBook Pro and Windows 7 gone awry on HP OfficeJet Pro 8600

Almost one year ago today I wrote a post about my first problem with HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 N911.  Today I write my last.
I have an HP OJP 8600, with option Tray 2 included, and auto feed included.  My system test computers are:
    1.  Apple MacBook Pro, OS X 9.5, HP software is the only 3rd party software.
    2.  HP Laptop, Windows 7.
The OJP wireless radio gave up, so I cannot run it wirelessly.  It is connected by ethernet to my router.  All five of my computers can use.  All of the functions of the printer are usable.  For example: it prints, it scans, it copies, it faxes.  All functions working.  My problem is with the HP software download to the Apple and to the HP Laptop.
I would like to be able to use all of the feature settings when I print.  But alas, I cannot.  Both the Apple and the HP Laptop have a similar appearing window that opens when you choose to print something.  In theory, you are supposed to be able to control a range of paper types and quality, print type and quality, and (in my case with the two trays) what tray to use to select the paper.
I regret neither of the computers perform these functions.  And all of the mistakes that I find on the Apple computer I find on the HP Laptop Windows 7 computer.
I don't have the time to test every combination.  But I think the table below will help you get an idea of what the problem is with the software that HP sends offshore for maintenance.
The results of the paper quality selection, the print quality selection, and the tray availability are as follows:
    PAPER              PRINT QUALITY                         TRAY AVAILABILITY
    Plain Paper
    Plain Paper  DRAFT/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray              Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2
Thick Paper  DRAFT gray/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray         Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2 gray
    HP Bright    DRAFT/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray              Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2
    InkJet
    Other        DRAFT gray/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray         Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2 gray
HP Bright    DRAFT gray/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray         Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2 gray
    Specialty
    Other        DRAFT gray/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray         Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2 gray
    Card         DRAFT gray/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray         Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2 gray
    Brochure
HP Brochure  DRAFT gray/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray         Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2 gray
    Other        DRAFT gray/NORMAL/BEST/MAX DPI gray         Auto/Tray 1/Tray 2 gray
In summary the new HP Print software for Apple and Windows 7 computers has identical programming mistakes on both operating systems.  Under no circumstances can I use the MAX DPI setting.
The user cannot use the features that are built in to the HP software because the paper selections override the locked tray, the print quality, and the unusually small list of HP selection of papers.
It is time to invoke my warrenty rights.  There are too many systemic problems with the software and the device.  I don't have any more time to act as an unpaid system test analyst for HP.
Who do I contact to use my warrenty before it runs out in a few weeks?

    Hi,
Those are not programming mistakes, but those are limitations of the product, please check the printer specifications below:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02858465&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
As you may find under Paper-handling specifications > Paper tray capacities, Tray 2 only support Plain Paper.
Maximum DPI is only only supported on Photo Paper, therefore those limitations are applicable.. these limitations are also listed on the Printing Specifications section above, Maximum DPI is listed as 4800 by 1200 dpi:
Color print resolution: HP enhanced photo quality with Vivera inks (up to 4800 by 1200 dpi Optimized on HP Premium Plus photo papers with 1200 x 1200 input dpi)
As well that can be find listed within the Print photos on photo paper or the Print borderless documents sections, you may simply search for Maximum DPI within the user guide as a reference:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03026243.pdf
Those are not an issues with the printer but those expected limitations fully meet the product specification.

  • Adding Airport Express to Existing Windows Wireless Network

My fiance has an existing Windows wireless network. I have an Airport Express I want to add to the network so I can "broadcast" my iTunes (or her's) through a powered speaker system in another room?
My question is...is that possible? And if so, how?
I've tried running my Airport Setup Assistant and restarting the Airport Express to no avail and would appreciate any suggestions.

Connect to the wireless network connected to the net (ie the (so-called) Windows wireless network**.
Having hard reset the Airport Express, run the Assistant and configure a new base station and configure it to connect to the existing wireless network.
** There is no such thing as a Windows wireless network, as 802.11b/g is the same standard used by Apple and other wireless router manufacturers, it is not Windows specific in any way.

  • Itunes and Windows 7

A few weeks ago I bought a new laptop (Asus) as my old had crashed and I have no way of accessing any of the files that are on my old machine.
I reinstalled Itunes on my new laptop but this machine runs with Windows 7 whereas my old one ran with Windows Vista. I never had any issues with Vista and Itunes befire. I could sync my Iphone and add music/photos without issues. However, on this machine I have failed to sync my Iphone as I keep getting the message that I need the 64bit version - which IS installed, and I keep removing and reinstalling Itunes over and over. My phone has not synced for all this time and I got the Iphone 4 yesterday and ofcourse that one won't sync either. Also my libraries and all my music purchases seem to have dissapeared in the proces (but are all stored on my Iphone, to which I have no access due to Itunes)
I have been roaming around online for ages and tried everything from shutting down firewalls to reinstalling an older version of Itues (9.2). Nothing is working and I keep failing to sync my Iphone. Itunes is simply not supporting it. Now I have discovered there are some issues with Itunes/Apple and Windows 7 so what I'd like to know is apart from throwing my laptop out of the nearest window and pulling my hair out in frustration... Is there one answer someone can give me what I can do because I am seriously beginning to lose my cool after weeks and weeks of trying.
    Thanks.

I feel a full comprehension for you since I have EXACTLY the same problem. I will not describe my experience since it is so well told in your message.
I have just a comment concerning those people presenting themselves as "witch doctors"  of programming,
capable to realize incredible applications, who, instead, are not able to make their products compatible with a
so largely used system as windows7. SHAME !!!!!
For the time being my solution is to keep my old 32b XP computer on a shelf and using it every time I have to sync something on my iPod or iPad. Sincerely yours, Paolo de Magistris, Rome, Italy.

  • Partition Map Schemes: HFS+ and FAT32 partitions with OSX and Windows

OK so I know this question has been practically beaten to death, but I keep finding conflicting information. I am using a 2011 MacBook Pro, on which I will set up Windows through Boot Camp. I recently purchased a 750 GB WD external hard drive to use with time machine for a backup on my Mac. However, I also need to be able to use part of this for Windows files. SO.. I intend to use the HFS+ partition for the the Mac (500GB) and create a FAT 32 partition (250GB) to use for backing up windows files (using it for solely computer modeling and need to be able to transfer/share files with Mac users who use Parallels as well as copying to PC desktops). My question is what to use as the partition map scheme. I have heard that when using these two partition types, a Master Boot Record is needed (so Windows can recognize the FAT32 partition) and also that a GUID partition map is required for use with time machine, meaning windows would no longer be able to read the FAT32 partition. Is there a way to reconcile this? Either using Time Machine with HFS+ partition that is set to MBR or uisng FAT32 on Windows with a GUID partition map? Also if I were to use Parallels (with a GUID setup) instead of Boot Camp, could that be the way to save the windows files to the FAT32 Partition and avoid problems with Time Machine not working with MBR? Thanks for any expertise, as I have heard that both setups that I have mentioned both will work and both will not work. Any experience with a similar situation?

Wow. Thanks for the extremely quick responses. Just for a few points of clarification.. I'm a complete newb at backing up strategies.
Steve, you would recommend to not backup files from my Mac OSX and files from Windows (also on my Mac) on the same drive, correct?
I appreciate the strategy of using it only as a backup, that makes quite a bit of sense. However, if I want to only backup my OSX files, and also store (solely as backup copies) say, a number of computer models (Rhino, Revit, etc.) that were created in Windows programs (not needing to store the entire Windows disk), would it not make sense to store these on the same drive in a different partition, creating the need for two different partition formats? And if I were to do this, maybe I should use NTFS instead of FAT32 (and reformat to GUID since that seems to be a standard for Apple and Windows 7 recognizes it..?) to keep them completely separate since the computer model files cannot be opened unless running the Windows programs.
How do you use your drive with HFS+ and NTFS if not for backups? I will not need to access the HFS+ backup files in Windows, nor need to access files from an NTFS partition in OSX, so that seems to simplify things in that, at least at the moment, I will not need any Paragon software.
Currently my drive is partitioned as HFS+ and FAT32 as MBR, with the HFS+ partition set up with Time Machine. It appears to be successful, I see my files in Mac HD -> "users" and all my docs, desktop items, etc. are listed. Seems that there is in fact no limit on TM's use of MBR maps, or else it is way above 160GB.
Third, are you using CarbonCopyClone in place of Time Machine or in addition to it? If in addition would it create the bit-wise clone on the same HFS+ partition as TM is backing up to? Or a separate drive? I'd like to only have one external that I am backing up to for simplicity's sake. I've never used TM before, so this is all new to me. Also, I suppose I have been missing the distinction between storing copies of files, and making a complete backup of a disk image... just now realizing the difference. Thanks so much.

    Hi,
I searched for this issue and here is a thread I found:

Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.
I seems that it is a common issue that the network is slow in accessing a SMB share on Windows Server from a MacOS. Please see if the discussion above could help.
