Apple applications won't restart from dock

I've had this problem with Lion since day one, and although I am now running 10.7.4, the problem persists.
I run a MacBook Pro with mostly standard software. The exceptions are Adobe Flash Player, Flip4Mac WMV, Growl, Perian, Synergy, and Logitech Control Center. Most recent versions of all these products are installed.
I keep all of the applications I use most frequently on my dock. Most of the time I have Mail, iCal, Safari, System Preferences, Address Book, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, Adobe Reader, and Dictionary open. Filemaker Pro, Skype, and Stickies are often open as well. iPhoto, iPhoto Library Manager, and iTunes are only occasionally open.
I generally sleep my computer when not using it. I restart about once a week on average.
If I want to bring one of these applications to the front, I click on the Dock icon. Mail, Safari, and the non-Apple applications ALWAYS come to the front.
iCal, System Preferences, Address Book, and Dictionary hardly ever do. In order to access them, I have to launch Launchpad, then click on the dock icon again since Launchpad does not bring them to the front.
If I minimize the applications instead of hiding them, the minimized icon works, but then my dock has two versions of each application.

What happens if you go to office preferences (from your pulldown menu with Word or Excel open) >> general >> "show project gallery at startup" and deselect that item?
It's also possible that it could be a font that Office does not care for. Try dragging ~(yourhome)/library/fonts to the desktop and logging out and back in or restarting.

  • Applications won't launch from dock

I have recently had to re install tiger and was not able to use archive function so had to erase.
Most files etc were OK and was able to shift stuff around between the macs hard drive and an external storage device.
Lost of stuff got duplicated and I've been trying to sort out the mess!
I'm pretty well there now but have one last weird problem.
I can't launch the Word or Excell apps from the dock.
I've deleted and added them and also re installed the Office software but it still won't work.
I can open any of my Word or Excell files from the docs folder but the programme won't launch from the dock
    Any ideas?

  • Calendar won't open from dock or applications

I downloaded Mavericks--calendar won't open from dock or applications--help please

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Applications won't show in dock?

My applications won't show in dock when I'm using them, for example, I'm using imovie and vuze now and they will not appear in dock unlike in Lion. Is this something apple has introduced in mountain lion? They open when I select them from spotlight but they won't show up in dock.
Is there a fix for this?

I had a similar issue and I went to System Preferences > Dock, and I unchecked each check box that appears at the bottom. Then I restarted. Then I check the boxes that I had previously checked. This worked for me, I hope it will for you, too.

  • Non-Apple applications won't launch

On Intel iMac, recently many non-Apple applications won't launch, including Photoshop, Indesign, Quicken, Filemaker, Techtool Pro. On the other hand, Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, Pixadex, Ultralingua all launch just fine. The non-launchers quickly present the window with Ignore, Report..., Relaunch; and using Relaunch just brings the window up again.
I've tried Disk Utility, both from the drive and from the OSX install disk; Time Machine back to just before the problem started; removed .plist file from Preferences: all to no avail.
While this problem started one week ago, we have had a new iPhone 3G since July 12 (since I see a few discussions with the same error codes related to iPhone).
Below are the error reports for Photoshop and Filemaker, and some system info.
What can I do to fix this? Thanks!

No idea what caused it, but your PPC emulator is definitely hosed and doing a clean installation would probably be less time consuming than figuring out what the problem is.
This is also all very old software that was never meant to run in Leopard at all, so you should consider the possibility that some of it will simply never work.

  • Safari won't open from dock after upgrading to leopard

I've upgraded from OS X 10.4.11 Tiger to OS X 10.5.2 Leopard with the upgrade DVD which arrived today and all the available Software Updates (which included a Safari update). No more Software Updates are available - I've checked.
Safari and Mail will now not open from the Dock. Neither will iChat, AddressBook, iDVD (which produces a pop-up saying it "quit unexpectedly" - it didn't appear to start at all), and iCal. Safari and Mail WILL open from my Applications folder thankfully. I haven't checked the other mentioned applications, except iDVD which does the same non-opening with pop-up from Applications too.
I have run permissions verification and permissions repair from Disc Utility on the Mac HD. I have run disc verification from there too and the result said the disc appears OK. Neither solved the Dock problem.
The icons in the Dock don't bounce or anything. They remain still and un-animated. I just get a pop-up message saying "You cannot use the application "Safari.app" with this version of Mac OS X". Which surprises me as it's a native Apple Mac application isn't it? Obviously it says "Mail.app" for mail, "iChat.app" for iChat etc.
I reinserted the Leopard installation DVD and installed all the applications from the Optional Install.mpkg folder, including Safari and Mail. This has made no noticeable difference: they still won't open from the dock. I have just noticed that an additional icon for Safari appears at the far (right hand) end of the dock when I open it from Applications. But it disappears when I close Safari, so no good for opening it.
It could be worse, I can actually open some of the applications from my Applications folder. But this is inconvenient and besides, it is supposed to work from the Dock.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Can anyone help me to solve it please?
I have backed-up (not using time machine - I backed-up before I upgraded). I hope to avoid having to erase and reinstall but I will IF that will solve this problem (and not cause any others
    Help please. Thanks.

    Hi
Dock icons are simply alias. The ones on your dock may be corrupted, especially since you can open Safari from the applications folder. To remove an icon, right click on it and select "remove from dock", or simply drag it off the dock, where it will disappear in a puff of virtual smoke.
Then, go to the Finder and single-click/hold any item you want on the dock. Drag it there.
Try Safari or the other apps again.
Specific to the Leopard upgrade, important any 3rd party items installed in your system are Leopard compatible, otherwise you'll have operational problems when using them.
One other thought. It is possible the Dock is corrupted, causing the problem. If the above does not resolve the problem, go to the Finder: Your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. There, move the com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db files to the desktop, then relaunch the Finder (hold down the option/command/esc keys to reveal the Quit Panel. Select the Finder>relaunch.

  • IPhoto Won't Open from dock

My Iphoto icon is in the dock but when I double click on it, no bounce or anything. When I 2 finger tap on it I get "remove from dock", "open at login", "show in finder", & "open". When I choose one of those it does nothing. I looked in finder and there is not iphoto choice under applications. Looked in spotlight and can't find it there. When I look under finder in "pictures" I see my iphoto library there and when I try to open it I get there is no default application and I need to choose one. When I do there is no iphoto to choose. I can click on "pictures" in finder and see all my photos as JPEG's and open them in finder. When I choose an application to open with I can click on "photos" and see all my iphotos, events, last download etc. Please help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in the Applications folder and confirm that the iPhoto application is present. If it is then try the following: close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • App store won't open from dock

app store will not open from dock. it just bounces and never opens. I have 4 updates I cannot update either.

Absolutely do not install "Onyx" or any other so-called "utility."
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Programs won't launch from Dock or Applications.

has anyone seen this problem; I click on a program in the dock and the black triangle appears showing it is to launch, but the black triangle flashes two or three tims and then disappears. the program never runs. i am having this problem on one of 9 G4 computers running 10.3.9. it only happens with Safari, Peak Express 4 and install files compressed with stuffit.

If you have updated the software then the original icon in the dock may not work.
    Try this:
    1. Click on the Macintosh HD
    2. Click The Applications Button.
    3. Find the application you wish to open
    4. If the application icon bounces in a different place to normal then Ctrl click on that Icon and choose "keep in dock"
    5. Drag the old icon of the dock on to the desktop, It will go up in a cloud of smoke.

  • ITunes won't open from dock or apps

When I click on the iTunes icon on the dock, it bounces once (sometimes twice), then stops bouncing and nothing opens. I tried opening from the application folder and nothing. I tried downloading the most recent version, but then I can't open the .dmg file in order to install (the files flashes like usual, but then nothing opens up).
It's not just iTunes acting like this-- Safari and iChat are acting the same way. Software Update won't open either. Other programs such as Firefox, quicktime, Word, etc, are fine.
My Norton Antivirus was expired and I downloaded an upgrade today-- but that .dmg file won't open either! I ran a virus scan anyway with the old Norton, and it didn't find anything.....
Things started acting up after I did a software update the other day. Now, when I plug in a memory stick or external hard drive (Lacie), they won't show up on the desktop, but if I restart with them already plugged in, they show up. The iTunes trouble started today when I restarted in order to access my external hard drive (it was fine this morning before I restarted!)
I think I covered all bases.... Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would first try to Repair Permissions under Disk Utility. If that doesn't help, you might to post over in the Tiger forum, as this is obviously more than an iTunes issue. You might also try logging in and launching an app *under a different user account*. That could help narrow down the cause of the problem.

  • Mac Pro 1.1 won't restart from boot HD or install DVD

I have a MacPro 1.1 quad which won't finish the restart sequence from Boot HD or the Install DVD. I also can't get the DVD to boot to anything but hardware test (D key), which I ran and passed. After reading lots of posts about similar problems, I was pretty sure that it is my ATI Radeon 1900 card gone bad killing the restart right after the Grey apple screen. Then, while trying everything I could think of and finally getting the OPTION key restart to get the Startup Manager, I noticed my old boot camp partition (VISTA) that I had played around with, but never used much. After several failed attempts to get the install DVD to boot, I tried the boot camp partition and to my amazement, after a pause, windows started up. (That's actually how I'm writing this now.)
I ran some tests on the graphics card from windows and it appears to be running fine, albeit a little hot.  So now the question: Can the graphics card still be the culprit when it performs ok on the Windows side?
Windows also says that the OSX boot partition of the same drive that boot camp is on can't be read (using MacDrive). But a Seagate HDD diag tool checked the drive and found no errors. I guess that could be part of my problem, but then why wouldn't it boot from the install DVD or in safe mode. I even tried putting the install DVD in my macbook and booting from there in Target mode, with no luck. Also, my install DVD is the original Leopard that came with the machine, but I had upgraded to 10.6.8 later. Would that cause the DVD not to work as a boot disc?  I just want to get to the Disk Utility so I can reinstall.
Any knowledge or help would be so appreciated!
    Thanks

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 and recently starting having issues. I was running out of drive space for my Vista drive I use Bootcamp. I decided to reinstall Vista on a bigger drive. I went through the normal procedure and had a **** of time installing Vista until I removed the main Lion SSD. Lion has Windows 7 drivers only. So I wanted to reinstall Snow Leopard on a blank drive and get those drivers.
Mac Pro will not read or mount the SL installation DVD. It mounted once and could barely read anything but at a slow rate. I cleaned the disk, but after that despite holding down not the C and D keys at boot up and using Option at boot up the SL kept getting spitted out. Tonight I took it apart and cleaned it with compressed air and vacuum cleaner. I popped the DVD again and it spit it out. I put a DVD movie and it mounted fine. I'm ripping it as we speak. I've done this before just want to see why it won't read SL.
Considered buying an external DVD write for $39 to see if I can get around this issue. Will post back on results. Otherwise this 2007 Mac Pro has been rock solid since then.

  • Basic Apple applications won't open on Mac Pro after Mavericks upgrade

    Hi,
I'm having issues opening a number of basic applications including Quicktime and Itunes
Through the App store I have updated everything, the last one I was holding out on was updating Itunes. I did that last night and now today Itunes won't open.
I click the image in the dock, the icon briefly bounces upward and then after bouncing down does not open or display any kind of error message.
I am running a 2008 Mac Pro w/ 2x2.8ghz quad-core, 10gb of RAM, these issues began after updating to Mavericks.
Many other apps including FCPX, Adobe Premiere CC, VLC, App Store, are all working fine.
It seems to be an issue with just basic Apple software - please help!

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • MP Navigator won't open from dock

I am using a Canon MP600 with MP Navigator as the scanning utility and cannot get it to open from the dock, only from spotlight or finder. I've got the latest drivers and software version however these were last updated last year. Has anyone any experience of this and if so, is it resolvable?

Hi - thanks for the suggestions. I tried both and unfortunately the icon still bounces in the Dock but won't open a window. Interestingly when I open immediately after from the Spotlight search, the message comes up that the scanner driver will be closed as it is being used by another application or not available. I checked using the Spaces key whether or not it was open but hidden but could not see anything. I'm at a loss now
