Apple backup software

Does apple have software that will backup my hard drive?
If not, can you suggest a good backup software?
PS: If I wanted to clone my boot drive to another drive, could I use Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper? After the boot drive is clones unto my second drive, could I then turn on my apple, replace the boot drive with the clone drive and I would be booting from my new cloned drive?

Here are some backup applications recommendations as well as some thoughts on general Mac maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior.  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption.  TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  Currently only TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is compatible with Intel Macs.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
My personal recommendations for backups are (order is significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Deja Vu (Shareware)
4. SuperDuper (Commercial)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
6. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary)
7. MimMac (Shareware)
8. RsynchX 2.1 and PsyncX 2.2.1 (Freeware)

  • Apple Backup Software and Automatic iCal Backup

Is there a way to use Backup Software from Apple to automatically backup my iCal calendars? Where is the iCal Calendars stored on my Hard Drive?
    Kevin

The calendars are located in the folder Library/Calendars/ of the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon; any backup software which is backing up the whole home folder is backing the calendars up.

  • Apple 'backup' software not on restored system?

I have had a new HDD installed and done a clean install of Leopard up to 10.5.8. with no problems.
I have always kept a regular backup on DVD of my user files and settings using software called 'Backup' which Ive assumed was Apple software? I assumed this was a simpler tool provided if not using Time Machine.
This software is no longer on my restored Leopard system so I can no longer use the 'restore' function - although I can read data from the disk.
I am puzzled as to where & what this 'backup' software was? Can anyone help please?

Backup is not part of basic OS X install. it comes with a mobileme subscription. I don't use mobileme so don't know the details but I believe you need to activate your mobileme membership and then you'll be able to get Backup from mobileme.

  • Restore macbook pro with apple "Backup 3.1.2" software.

Last month my 12 and 17 inch powerbook G4 were stolen. I did have backups on 2 external hard drives. One was a manual back up (drag/drop) and the other I used the apple "backup 3.1.2" software. I was trying to restore my new macbook pro from the apple backup software. I kept receiving errors. Is backup 3.1.2 compatible with 10.5.6 and/or how can I restore all my data to my new macbook pro? Thanks and appreciate the help.

I know it's not very helpful, but to answer your question regarding compatibility, I use Backup 3.1.2 to backup specific sensitive data to a secure web-space every night. I have had an occasion to need something from that backup and have had no problems with restores. 3.1.1 is the 10.5 cutoff, as I recall.
Couple of thoughts as I was putting this reply together. Where are you storing the resulting backup data, maybe there was a problem with the write between your computer and that location? I bring this up because you might have other data on that drive which may need to be looked at. This really does you no good now, but the backup program also creates logs in your console which you can review. If there were problems, you can look there to see what the issue(s) are.
Final thoughts, is your entire backup corrupted, or just portions of it? In other words, can you get SOME data out of the backup, or can you not even open the file? If you have a drag/drop backup I would at least start with that and see how much of your data you can get restored.
Hopefully some of that helps. Been in your shoes and it's not fun. Good luck!

  • In need of backup software

Hello there. Does anyone have a recommendation for good backup software? I need something that can syncronize some of my folders to an external hard drive. Thank.

My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • Backup software for early '04 iBook?

I bought a used early '04 1.07GHz 12" iBook (M9426LL/A) w/no restore software. Tiger was already loaded which I have updated to 10.4.11 but I'd like to have backup software. Apple tells me this iBook had Panther 10.3.3 installed when new. Question: Is there any need to purchase original software as backup (in case of a crash, resale, erase personal data from hard drive, etc.) or, at this point, will a retail copy of Tiger suffice? I have looked for 10.3.3 restore software on eBay and Craigslist but seems hard to come by unless I want pay Apple $$$.
    Thanks all.

Gotcha. I guess what's confusing are eBay ads like this one:
    +MAC OS X 10.4 TIGER INSTALL DVD - FULL RETAIL VERSION+
+This Mac OS X Tiger is a FULL INSTALL version of 10.4 upgradable to 10.4.11 free through Apple website and it will install on any Mac as long as you meet hardware requirements listed below.+
+You will receive 1 DVD with full version.+
    +System Requirement:+
    +-Power G3, G4, G5.+
    +-DVD drive.+
    +-256 MB memory at least.+
    +-3 GB available HD space.+
+This is a FULL version, NOT an upgrade which can't do a full install.+
I've seen retail Tiger UPGRADE discs available on Craigslist and eBay. It's a little confusing which does what and which is the one I might need.

  • Bootable backup software

First of all, what's a bootable backup? I have a WD 320GB Mybook (fire wire/usb) backup drive. WD said that their included software doesn't create a bootable drive. I asked them because I told it to back up everything and it did except for 168 files. I guess I want a bootable drive because if I lost everything, I could restore everything? What do you recommend? Is WD backup software enough? If I need a bootable backup software, what free or low cost one would you recommend? Hope that all makes sense?

Hello! AS has been mentioned a "bootable backup" is a "clone" or "exact copy" of your main drive and one that will be bootable in an emergency. It can be on an external firewire drive or it can be on a separate "volume" of your main drive or reside on a secondary physical drive. SD and CCC have been mentioned but you can also use the Apple Disk Utility to produce one following Kappy's advice. Tom
Kappy's Steps to Produce a bootable clone
    Prep external FW drive:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • The best backup software for mac os 10.4.8?

    Hi,
I'm new on mac, I just got tired of PC and windows so I decided to make a change, a really good change.
First of all to say that I've been looking for an answer of this question around the forums, but havn't got what I'm looking for. What I've found is that people prefere freeware, I just want good stuff.
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to place my topic, but is not a bad one either.
    Anyway, here is my question.
I need to clone and do incremental backups, but I have to be extremely sure that the software I use is completly trustfull and secure, so I do not care if I have to pay 100€ (not much more thouh), just want to be sure I get everything works right.
I also prefere software that only does clone and backups than a multitask soft.
Well, if u have any question just ask, u're the ones who really know about this things.
    Thanks, everything is wellcome here.

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.

The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)

  • Best backup software for individual folders?

I already use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of my Macintosh HD to my External HD, but now I'm looking for backup software that will back up just my music, photos, individual folders etc. I like Apple's Backup, but I'm not prepared to pay the money for .Mac when I'm only going to use 1 app. Any suggestions? • Looking for opinions on Apple's software RAID in Disk Utility

I'm thinking about making a stripped RAID (RAID 0) with Apple's software RAID in Disk Utility. How reliable is it, and will I see a huge speed improvement over just having two independent drives. This RAID will also be my boot drive. Is that a good idea or should I have a separate drive for that function?

It depends. And seeing you don't have a lot of exposure to RAID, it depends, you still need even more to regularly backup, and depends on the drives to some extent. RAIDs are great for some things, and the sustained reads and writes look good in some simple benchmarks, but for most users, they are better off with a really good fast 10K Raptor or something as a dedicated OS/apps boot drive.

They did some earlier tests on RAID for boot drive, which you might want to look into.

  • Problems with Apple iTunes Software

I need help with my Apple iTunes Software. When I run Apple Software Update, it will not update right. It will not download the required software either that comes with the iTunes package. Also, when I open Apple Software Update, it asks for admin rights in Microsoft Windows. It used to never do that. I need help here. Help would be greatly appreciated.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I am using APPLE's Backup 3 (ver.3.1.2 - v374) software to backup my files and configs on my .Mac storage. However, one of my backup tasks has been failing lately writing the following information in its log file:

This also happened a few weeks ago - back then, I bypassed the situation by deleting and re-creating the configuration of the failing backup.
What is wrong with this? What can I do to resolve this permanently?

    Hello,
    Post in the MobileMe Forum
The Mobile Me gurus hang out there and hopefully offer assistance.
In the mean time, locate this file and see if deleting it helps. com.apple.Backup.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot your Mac. See if that helps.

  • Anyone Use Different Backup Software with Time Capsule

I love the concept of Time Machine + Time Capsule, but there are too many problems and I have wasted too many hours trying to get it to work properly. So...
Has anyone had success using different backup software (maybe Apple Backup) with Time Capsule?
I would love to go back in time and simply:
1-Plug my computer into the drive (wireless is fine too)
    2-Launch my backup software
    3-Backup

Really not sure. I've always just done bootable backups...
You CAN create a bootable backup onto a sparse disk image on an Airdisk, but of course it wouldn't really be bootable until the backup was cloned back directly to a drive. So I guess you could back up that way, and if you needed it you could restore back to your main HDD, from the sparse image, and the computer would be restored and bootable. I think.
My original goal was to have both Time Machine backups and SuperDuper clones ll being done over the Time capsule/Airdisks, but now (if I decide to get an AEBS or TC) I will likely only do the Time Machine backups over the wifi, and still have an occasional clone made to a drive plugged in via usb.
To your last comment though...if your only going to do the User folder, it may make as much sense to just use Time Machine, since you can restore/migrate from a TM backup. Although it may be smart to do a user folder backup using BOTH Time Machine and SuperDuper, for redundancy.
Sigh, always so many options, and usually doesn't work the way you want it to...

  • D*mN SilverKeeper - Recommendations Needed 4 Backup Software

My hard drive crashed earlier last week...so everytime I did a full backup using SilverKeeper software...I assume it updated the files that were modified and saw the log of new files it added. Unfortunately, when I restored my system and started putting everything back on the new drive, MY EMAIL, ADDRESS BOOK, ICAL software was not updated as originally thought for ONE ENTIRE YEAR. Thank goodness I decided to copy over my business software data. Old hard drive is gone.
Or can I call Apple support and see if I can still retrieve the old drive?
Similar to Windows or Veritas Backup, is there a utility in Apple that does the backup and checking/updating files? What are some consumer recommendations for backup software?
    PS....I love 10.4.6 though

I agree with Superduper. You have various backup options which I've mentioned on my FAQ here:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
As for recovering the data, if it isn't a complete hard drive crash, and just a directory issue, you can try Alsoft Disk Warrior. If it is a hard drive crash, you may be able to salvage information with Prosoft Data Rescue. If that doesn't work a professional data recovery firm may be necessary.
By the way, Silverkeeper works well, though you need to make sure you are using the most current version. If you were and it didn't work, I suggest writing http://www.lacie.com/ about your issue.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.
