Apple brand blank DVD-R

Does anyone know if Apple has stopped making Apple blank DVD-R discs? I was looking for them on the Internet and couldn't find any -- not even at the Apple Store. Thought it was strange. I've never had any problems with them. I'd be very dissappointed if Apple stopped making them. Anybody out there still use Apple blank discs?

From what I understand, Apple never 'made' the DVD-R. I believe they were manufactured for them by Imation, a branch of 3M, at least that's what I was told by a videographer. We've found the Imation products to be quite reliable at our workplace. I would like to see if anyone here could confirm that Imation did, indeed, make the Apple DVD's.

  • IMac DVD Burner only burns on Apple Brand blank DVDs

    Hello,
I have an iMac G4 Dome and just last week it stopped burning DVDs on any brand outside of Apple Blank DVDs. The CD burner works fine, it's just the DVD burner. Can anybody help?

maybe you just accidentally bought your first batch of DVD+R.
The burner in that machine can only burn DVD-R
THis is confusing to a lot of people. We're all so used to seeing CD-R, that we just assume DVD-R has a similar meaning.
The breakdown is something like this.
CD-R = Compact Disc (dash) Recordable
    DVD-R = DVD minus Recordable
    DVD+R= DVD plus Recordable.
I know it's dopey, but that's probably what's happening. The early superdrive, though actually ABLE TO DO IT, has the firmware blocking any DVD+R media, largely because Apple knew that +R media will not play in a lot of consumer decks, and didn't want to field the questions and irate calls (i.e. My iMovie and iDVD project wont play in my cousin's DVD player??!!!_
Anyhow, i suspect you just bought your first DVD+R media, and it just wont work.

  • Apple Brand blank discs

I have just discovered the existence these from a recent post here. The Apple Store lists DVD-R only (no DVD-RW).
Are -R better than -RW for distribution to others, and if so in what way? For example, more reliable playing on various DVD players?
Same question, Apple DVDs compared to Tayo Uden?
    Thanks.

    Hi:
I'm pretty sure that Apple media is not "Apple manufactured". I never had a Apple media in my hand to check the real manufacturer.
You can learn about media manufacturer/brand in this page: Media Brand vs. Manufatrurer Brand.
You can use i.e. Toast to check the manufacturer ID from your media. Sometimes (very often) brand name is not manufacturer name.
As you can see in that link, Taiyo Yuden is clasified as first class media, and I have heard the same here in the forums (I personally cannot get that brand in my country and then never used them!).
    Hope it helps !

  • I need the blank DVD -R made by Apple Co.

Bought Oct., 2003 iMAC G4 Dome, DVD burning is problem with another brand blank DVD-R....
I used to burn with Apple Co. brand blank DVD when I use iDVD program and iphoto. I burned Apple brand blank DVD-R yesterday iDVD projects.
But, now, I can not buy Apple Co. brand blank DVD-R anymore & anywhere...
Until the last week, I burned Apple Co. brand blank DVD when I bought lots of blank DVD made by Apple Co. brand. Apple brand blank DVD -R was perfectly working with my iMAC G4.
However, 3 days ago, I bought sony brand blank DVD -R, Verbatim brand DVD-R, Memorex DVD -R, Maxell DVD-R etc. , and I try to burn all brands of blank DVD -R...
Even I'v shown my iMAC G4 to Apple store Garden State palza in Paramus, NJ, they did not found the problem. one of assistant in Apple store said, " buy New one..." This is not a solution , isn't it?
    I have no idea.
Now, I need the blank DVD -R made by Apple Co.
How can I do ? or Do you have any idea?
My iMAC G4 was bought Oct. 2003 and use MAC OS X 10.2.8.
tomorrow, I need to burn iDVD project in order to show my buyer.
    Help me......

At First, I try to do your first option,
Verbatim brand DVD-R is not working.
    Next , you said,
"Verbatim should have worked. Typically Apple branded discs are just repackaged Verbatims. One thing to note about that machine, a firmware update supported higher speed burn support DVDs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86130"
-------- Pop up window said, "This update is not compatible with this model Macintosh"
so, Let ms check this DVD Devices & volumes , it is ,
    CD-RW/DVD-R
    Disc Burning Fully supported.
    Unit Number 0
    ATA Device Type atapi
    Device Serial EA998D08
    Device Revision A43h
    Product Identification DVD RW DW-U10A
    Vendor Identification SONY
The result is ... Mine is Sony brand.
If that doesn't work, and your clock battery has been replaced in the last four years, zap your PRAM:
Finally, if none of the above works, you may want to get an external Firewire burner from http://www.macsales.com/
They have the full range of support from iDVD to other Apple applications, as well as booting.
your last option is the last of my choices.
    Is that all?
I have used power mac 6100-66 since 1994 that is still working in my studio, I love MAC, In My Studio, I have two Macs, One is Power Mac 6100-66av and iMAC G4 17" flat Dome.
I have No Idea why my DVD -R Burning Broblem with others brnad blank DVD-R except Apple brand. and you company said, "Typically Apple branded discs are just repackaged Verbatims."
But My DVD Burning is still problem with that Verbatim brands DVD-R.
Really,if you take care of your future customer, Your company needs responsibility to even just, one customer's sound.
Now, I have no solution except to buy external Firewire burner with my money.
Now to Future, who can buy the MAC without the clear solution service in Apple Co.?

  • Brand of DVD-R disc

I noticed in the Apple store that they don't sell Apple Brand of DVDs any more. I tried a different brand one time and it didn't work. I have had success with the Apple 4x. What brand do I buy now?

    Welcome to discussions Good Virginia:)
I would say that 9 out of 10 posters here would suggest
    that you try Verbatim DVD-R 4X (8X if you can't find 4X)

  • Now that Apple branded DVD media (DVD-R/-RW x2, 4, 8) No Longer Exists.....

I've had my Powerbook G4 for about 3 years now and have only been successful burning DVDs with Apple's own branded media. Other branded media has had a fairly high fail-rate with my UJ-816 Superdrive and there are no firmware updates for the model. Apple-branded media is just short of a ZERO fail rate (maybe 2-3 lost out of 200-300 DVDs and many hundreds of CDRs - honest, it's been that good).
Apple branded DVD-R/-RW media compatible with x2/x4/x8 (I have an x2 but it's been fine using x8) IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. I've dug through Apple stores, Best Buy, online stores, eBay, MacMall, J&R Electronics, etc. and nothing.
So, does anyone else with one of these slower burning Superdrives have any recommendations for other branded media that they've found works successfully?
Thanks - I'm desperately trying to complete backup of a 30,000+ track audio library to DVD and this is really the wrong time to find the only media that worked is no longer marketed.

Sorry to hear that, but there's surprising hope: you want to shop by manufacturer, not Brand. Indeed, check www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm. Apple sold Mitsubishi discs. These are currently sold as Mitsubishi-Kagaku Media (MKM) by Verbatim & Infiniti (of England). You can shop by 'brand' locally, if you rewrite the 'brand' table on 'digitalfaq' by replacing the manufacturer by those manufacturers it subcontracts to (I assume the worst). :-[ Sony, Kodak, Panasonic, & Verbatim sell only the best, often Taiyo Yuden: reportedly the best manufacturer! But Taiyo Yuden can be bought directly from such internet stores as www.supermediastore.com/, where 200 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs in black, plastic sleeves are currently on sale for $40: that's US$ 0.20 each. Internet superstore like this are supposed to list the media codes, but all I've ever found is MKM listed. Other codes just list the brand's name: some brands don't even manufacture discs, and others that manufacture even the best discs subcontract to poor manufacturers when the company is in need. Taiyo Yuden doesn't subcontract. If you buy a mystery brand (which I don't believe is economical), check the return policy: they will replace discs that fail from visible damage, but who has the time for that? As a final note, many drives burn my MKM001s at 8x (because, I suspect, they consulted Verbatim when writing their firware table), whereas my LaCie writer (Samsung OEM) writes it at 2x (because, I suspect, they more responsibly consulted MKM for their table). If you burned Apple's DVD-Rs at 8x, check with Apple or http://www.cdfreaks.com/ and ask what speed your drive will burn the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R or the Verbatim DVD-RW, claimed to burn at 4x and currently selling for about US$1.00 each. I've a list of reputable internet stores selling blank media which I initially found, then added to from Germany (which are bilingual stores) & France (which wouldn't think of it). Apple likely prefers I offer such lists by e-mail. You're welcom to write, from a .Mac alias. PS. Check out 'Office Depot' brand on the first website.

  • Apple branded DVDs

I have problems with Apple branded DVD's. After burning it with iDVD 6 I put the DVD in the SuperDrive of my PowerMac G5 and the DVD starts like usual. Then after ten or 13 minutes the DVD-Player stops and shows a dialog with an error message, that the DVD may be scratched etc.
I also noticed that on the backside of the DVD the inner circle (approx. 1cm thick) is brighter or simply different from the other outer circle. Perhaps this is exactly the place where the DVD-Player fails to read the DVD.
I tried other branded DVDs and some works some not!
My SuperDrive is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D version A707. I downloaded the SuperDrive FW Updater, but he says, that I don't need to update.
It's strange because Apple DVDs have a good reputation, above all you use them with a Mac!
I noticed, that a other branded DVD is 4x and it works with this DVD. Perhaps my SuperDrive can only burn 4x and not 8x like the Apple branded are. But, I thought, that the FW Update should fix this? My PowerMac is listed at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/superdrivefirmwareupdate.html

I have burned about 500 Apple 8 X DVD-R disks with only one verify error. First with a Pioneer DVR-107D Version 1.21, then a DVR-110 Version 1.41 to get double layer burning (with Verbatim DVD+R DL). The different shade area is probably showing how far it burned before failing. Look at an unused disk and it should be uniform all the way out to the edge. Usually when I use iDVD 6, I burn a disk image file to the hard drive, then use DISK Utility to burn the DVD. This eliminates the possibility of iDVD not keeping up with the drive when burning. I had that problem with iDVD 3.01 when I first installed the Pioneer DVR-107D (8X) to replace the DVR-A03 (2X) that came with my Mac. It would fail part way through the disk when burning at 8X. Since that version of iDVD could not write disk image files, I burned to a 1X DVD-RW disk, then, using Disk Utility, made a disk image file from the DVR-RW, burned that to a DVD-R (8X), then erased the DVR-RW disk to use again.
You could be having the same problem, which would explain why the 4X disks worked.
Does your drive fail when burning with Disk Utility to the Apple disks at 8X?
Newer firmware in the drive might help. Apple is very reluctant to issue drive firmware updates. I think the update they issued was just for the Pioneer DVR-A03 and A04 models, to prevent damage with $x and 8X media.

  • Brand of Blank DVD's

Hi: I just burned my project onto a few blank Memorex DVD-R dvd's and it generally plays back pretty well but on some devices - not so well. Is there a certain brand of DVD's I should be using?
    Thanks,
    Tommy

    Tommy:
Is there a certain brand of DVD's I should be using?
First you must learn about brands & quality . . . AND . . . brands & manufacturers. I use to check this link for Media Brand vs. Manufatrurer Brand.
Then you must check the first quality you can get in your burner to find the best combination.
generally plays back pretty well but on some devices - not so well
Some problems in your authoring workflow could produce those errors, i.e. a high bitrate could make the disc fail in some players.
Post some information about your project.

  • Pioneer Superdrive no longer reads Apple Brand DVDs!

Just recently i have noticed my G5 has stopped accepting Apple Branded dvds. All others work fine. I think it started after I upgraded to 10.4.4.
Since I upgraded I have noticed the drive makes a lot more 'clicks and *****' as well as the fan underneath the drive spins alot faster and makes more noise than before. Now when I put a pre-burnt Apple brand DVD into the drive, its sort of grunts, waits a few seconds then spits it out.
Curiously the dvds mount in my ibook with 10.4.4.
I think 10.4.4 has shafted the optical drive firmware is there any way I can reload the firmware?

Before this all happened, I could burn to dvd no problem.
BUT I totally know what you mean about having a problem ejecting any disk!
The grinding noise and the attempts by the iMac to spit them out on it's own and then trying everything I could think of to get it to eject... frustrating and a bit scary knowing something is definitely wrong.
It probably should have clued me in that things were only going to get worse.
I've got the extended care, my hard drive has already been replaced (that after only a few months) and now I've got to pack this baby up again and wait for the optical drive to be replaced.. oh no...
I agree, you should get a replacement without charge even if you don't have extended care as it is obviously defective, just like mine.
Hey thanks for replying, I was beginning to think this post was in complete vain.

  • Blank DVDs for Apple Superdrive DVR-106D?

I'm soon going to need some more blank DVD disks for my 17" iMac but there's a problem. As I understand it I can only use 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW discs.
    Is this right?
The problem is not many places do these now (I've found some 4x DVD-Rs but 2x DVD-RWs are rarer than rocking horse poop).
However reading through this forum I found the bit about the Superdrive software upgrade. It suggests that I can use faster discs without breaking the drive but that they'll only burn at 1x speed. Is that correct? Can I use, say, 16x DVD media in my drive without destroying it?
Is there anything else I should know? The reason I ask is that in the past I've tried to burn DVDs for use in a domestic DVD player and I've only found one type of disc that does it reliably (RiDisc 4x DVD-Rs which now, of course, are no longer available).
As ever any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Many of the older drives required you use the same speed media for the drives in your machine or they would show a error message.
As time has gone by, the Drive manufactures and the Media manufactures were made aware of this problem. In many cases they released Firmware Updates for many of the drives used in the computers to enhance there performance.
Here is a Media guide to use when purchasing DVD Media.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Read it carefully there is a wealth of information in reguard to Media in general.
Now let's talk about high speed media.
Now since the advent of 16X high speed media, many users have older machines that are only capable of burning at 1x, or 2x. Some of the media that is 16X will not work whereas others will. The key here is to read the packaging on the Media. It will clearly tell you that the media will burn at 1X,2X,4X,8X, and 16X. The key here is using high quality media your burner will burn at the highest rate it is capable of, using the higher quality media where it will not with cheap media.
I also recommend that you use DVD-R Media it is the most widely recognized and used across the board.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
As time goes buy and you become more familiar with your Optical drive and it's capabilities then you can branch out and expieriment with different Media Format's.
Remember that not all players and computers will recognize and play Some media's.
I personally use Maxell 16X DVD-R media. This is one of the highest in quality and is not farmed out by them to another maker as some are and burns fine at all speeds, This will be determined by your Optical Drive in your machine.(Read the Packaging on the Media)
Good Luck, Oh by the way I have never had a bad burn with this media.
    Don

  • Apple mini rejects blank dvd

Does anyone have a problem with the mini suddenly rejecting blank DVD's?

Any blank DVD? Any blank CD? Any blank DL DVD? minus and plus DVDs? RW too? or only one-burn media?
Give some details. In principle, especially if older, may show the beginning of its end, but may be just dirty, needs cleaning etc. There are many discussions on this topic.

  • Have the Apple brand DVD-R discs been discontinued by Apple?

I went to the Apple store today and they were all gone. Does Apple plan on replacing those?

I've seen some lurking in dark corners of some CompUSA stores, but they're definitely old, since they're 8X discs only. I would think that if Apple were planning on continued production of Apple-branded discs that they'd have produced 16X ones.
Is there a particular reason you want Apple branded discs? Are they the only brand that you've gotten to work in your machine?

  • DVD RW drive can't recognize blank DVDs

I'm having some difficulties getting my PowerMac Tower DVD RW drive to recognize blank DVDs. I'm able to burn and read CDs with no problems, and I can read DVD movies as well. However, when I insert a blank DVD+R (Memorex DVD+R 8x 4.7GB), the drive spins on and off and after 30s or so, it spits the DVD out with no error. Any idea what the problem is?
System Profiler shows the following info:
    SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A:

I agree that another media brand is in order. Memorex does not make quality media and this may be the problem.
TDK and Maxell make highly regarded media. Princo is labeled as "3rd class" by the DVD Media FAQ at digitalFAQ.com.
I use TDK almost exclusively and have yet to have a bad burn.

  • Why the Blank DVD can not be found in Super Drive?

With my new Mac Book Pro which I created severeal DVDs in past month, all of a sudden I have problem. In Both DVD Studio Pro and iDVD I can not burn the final video which is 35 minutes. Each time I attempt to burn my project, the disk is ejected with a message asking me to insert an acceptable disk because it couldn't find the blank DVD. I have used different brands and still no luck. I tested my hard drive with *TechTool Deluxe* and also the Mac Book Pro's 1st dick of installation and in both cases everything was fine and passes the test. I've updated all of my soft ware as well.
Would you please kindly share your knowlege to solve this problem.

Thank you for your time. I have tried Verbatim(Digital Movie DVD-R) which I used before with my Mac Book Pro and also apple DVD-R. Yes I can see my own burned DVDs and also all commercial one in my drive.
    Any suggestions

  • "please insert a blank dvd-r disc" over & over....

Hi, I'm running iDVD 4 and trying to burn a movie+slideshow I made in imovie onto memorex DVD+R's. I click 'Burn', it asks for a blank disc, I insert a blank disc, after 5 seconds, it ejects and asks for a blank disc over and over. I've tried quite a few discs from my stack, same thing every time. I have burned a project with these same discs in the past. Any ideas?...
