Apple Brand Versus Generic iBook Battery

I am looking to buy new battery for my iBook G4 (933MHz with two USB) and would like to hear from people who might have used generic battery. Are generic (3rd party) batteries are any better as are claimed?
After reading some posts in this forum, I understand that the batteries start deteriorate as soon as they are built. Is there a way I can make sure to get the batteries with latest manufacturing date from Apple or any other store? Appreciate any replies.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I used to always recommend buying a new battery from Apple's online store. It was my reasoning that Apple probably sells the most new batteries, so their supply should be the freshest.
Then someone accused me of being a shameless shill for Apple, so I don't say that as much any more, but it still sounds reasonable to me that this would be so.
I don't know if they are stamped with the manufacturing date. They are probably coded, but I don't know the code.
Here are some online links for battery choices:

It's not much help in choosing, though.

  • Which is a better brand of iBook Battery Cell?

Having a debate with a college over which brand of iBook battery makes a better replacement? He said those alternate brand batteries consist of Panasonic Cells.
Apple batteries are made with Cells from Samsung. Would anyone care to comment on which is of a better quality?

  • What is the difference between the generic accessories and the original apple brand?

I am looking on Amazon for a new cable, wall charger, car charger, and headphones with built in mic. There were a lot of generic brands for cheap and I was wondering what the differences between the apple and the generic brands were. Also I looked on the apple store and they were selling Belkin items. Is Belkin a good brand?

Belkin a a good thrid-party manufacturer. Most generic cable work but some do not. Griffen in another good brand too.
The differences in in the quality of the parts and the quality assurance that go into making the part.

  • Apple Branded Firewire vs. Generic Firewire

If I'm using a generic firewire cable to import video, should I expect the video quality to be noticeably lower than if I imported video using an Apple branded firewire cable? I think Apple is charging around $25-30 for a firewire cable and I picked up a generic one for about $7.
However, I noticed that the video that I watch in iMovie is not nearly as good as when I connect my 3CCD camcorder directly to the TV and watch there. Is it just that iMovie doesn't display my imported video at the best quality OR that I'm paying for using a generic firewire cable???
    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Hello Terrabay,
Although you have a definitive answer from mishmumken on the need to have a studio monitor for final review of any digital production as well as Matthew Morgan's correct response that the signal (packet)portion of the FW data is either going to work 100% or not at all, I'd like to add my two cents on generic vs quality FW cable.
Brief explaination: FW is sent in "packets" with a timing signal. If you have an inferior cable (read that cheap w/out decent shielding), you may lose that timeing signal, and the FW circuit on the other end of the cable can't properly sort out the packet information w/out the timing signal. The result will be no connection at all. That's why FW cable specific on cable length: the "packets" need to be timed from one end of the cable to the other, and w/out going into detail, the lenght is determined by the frequency of the "packets".
IMHO, inferior FW cable will cause the majority of problems in loss of connection. Sometimes just a bend or coil of the cable is enough to warp open the shield-wrap and interrupt the signal timing. On some quality FW cable, there may be up to four(quad) wrap to insure that that doesn't happen.
So, my suggestion is that you choose quality cable. And price does not always mean that you will get what you pay for.

  • New Battery other than Apple brand?

Suggestions for replacement battery beside Apple store?
    Apple wants about $100-$130.
Are any of the non Apple store batteries any good?
Lots to choose from on Amazon.
    What's hot? What's not?
If I buy Apple brand battery on line I have to send in the old battery and was told by Apple care
that it's ok to run MB on AC thingy, without battery. Most posts I've read say NOT to operate MB without battery installed. What to do?
    Thanks for all replies.

I can't make a recommendation on batteries as I have always used those from Apple just for peace of mind.
So far as running without the battery, you will not harm your system by doing so. However, should your MagSafe connector get disconnected or should you lose power (unless you are connected to an uninterruptable power supply)you will lose anything you may be currently working on that has not been saved.
Running with the battery removed will also result in your machine running significantly slower:

  • TruePowerPremium iBook Battery ...

I had to get a new battery for my G4 iBook. Our local Apple shop sold me a TruePowerPremium iBook Battery, which claims the "Highest Capacity, up to 50% More Capacity."
I've already allowed the battery to go completely dead three times, and fully charged the battery each time. I still only get barely two hours of normal use.
With the original battery I was getting six hours of use. Last summer I was still getting between 4 1/2 and 5 hours of usage. I bought the iBook in June of 2004.
The Apple shop told me that my iBook battery doesn't qualify for free replacement.
Question: Is there a better battery than the TruePowerPremium iBook Battery? I am very disappointed that I can only get two hours of normal use from this brand new battery!!!
    Help .... Thanks.
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I tried another brand. When i discovered only Apple's batteries will allow automatic low power sleep I returned it and paid $20 more for an Apple battery.

  • Ibook battery replacement - which battery?

I have a 2003 model of the iBook (firewire, dual usb, 800mhz, 14" g3) that needs a battery replacement. The batteries in the Apple store are astronomically priced, so I'm hoping to get one on Ebay, but I want to make sure that I get the right one. Is there some sort of battery model number that I need?
The mac store near me doesn't know the model number because the batteries are out of stock.
Also, won't I be able to replace the battery myself? I just need to know how to do that!
    Thanks for your help...

Well, the age of the battery is the most important thing. A lithium-ion battery starts its inevitable decline when it leaves the assembly line, and it doesn't matter if it's used or not (i.e., sitting in storage), the typical lifespan is two to three years.
So whether or not it's an Apple-branded battery, the age of it is the most important thing.
The model number doesn't matter at all, really, since newer ones have a different model number, but work fine.
Wherever you get it, be sure that they warrant it for at least a year, as Apple and other retailers do.
Instructions for replacing the battery can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88121
    Good luck.

  • IBook battery heating up - is this normal?

I just upgraded to an iBook from a Pismo a few days ago, and I've been taking it for a test ride.
I've found that the iBook battery seems to heat up very fast: after about 30 minutes to 1 hour, it gets quite hot on the top. I know the bottom is supposed to be hot (it seems all Mac portables have hot bottoms) but is the heat from the top something to worry about?
Strangely, my 6-year-old Pismo doesn't seem to put out as much heat as my iBook, although that might just be the casing design.

Its not normal, my battery is barley even warm.

  • Translucent iBook Battery

    Hello Eveyone,
My MacBook was fine, but I needed soneting a little more portable. When I was at a Computer Flea in Boston, I picked up a 500Mhz iBook Dual USB with a DVD Drive for $25.
Well, of course, you don't get much for $25, so as a project, I am going to fix it up and upgrade it. All of the components are in working order, but the case parts are pretty shot. I will be getting them from PowerBook Tech, so I'm pretty much set there.
But, the battery in it is dead and damaged, so I need to replace that. But, the battey is the original and is a translucent plastic one. Apple doesn't produce the translucent batteries anymore to my knowledge, they are all opaque.
So my question is, where am I able to find a translucent plastic iBook battery? It can be in any condition, any amount of life left, it doesn't matter. I know the opaque batteries do the same thing, but the opaque battery doesn't fit in with the rest of the computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Brian

    You know...
Since you have to replace the case anyway you might want to change the color too! It’s really easy to do:
    1) Soak the case (and battery cover) in rubbing alcohol then wipe off the white paint. Some spots will be stubborn so soak a paper towel in alcohol to get those spots.
    2) Carefully pry off the white bracket piece on the top. This is the piece that goes around the display. Use lots of alcohol here too. It helps dissolve the glue.
    3) When you are down to clear plastic wash the case in warm soapy water and let dry overnight.
    4) Mask off the front with paper and masking tape. You don’t want paint on the outside. Then spray several light coats of Krylon spray paint for plastics. They make lots of colors.
*You can even mask off shapes inside the case. When the paint is dry remove them and you now have windows in your case where you can place your favorite photos! It ends up looking like those laptop skins – only your photos are on the INSIDE!
Here is a photo of one I did in red:

  • Should I get a non-Apple Brand Nano Charger?

I am going on vacation in a few weeks and want to take my Nano with me. I won't be taking a laptop so I need to buy a charger.
I found this one http://www.emtcompany.com/products/tcipodw.htm for $6.95 with free shipping. Am I taking a chance with this one or am I better off purchasing an Apple-branded charger for $29.95?
I like the fact that this one doesn't need my sync cable as it has one built in.
    Opinions?
    Nano 4Gb   Windows XP Pro

I have seen other posts about this and they mention using your existing cable and a powered USB hub. These are usually very cheap from your local computer/electronics store. The thing to check is the size of the hub's power pack versus the special Nano charger you've seen.

  • Alternate to Apple Brand Power Supply?

So I've run through two power supplies (both broken where it connects with the computer) and I'd really rather not buy another apple brand supply. I understand the strange outside ring is only for the color on the charger so it's probably and any adapter of the same wattage with the same 1/8" plug should work, right?

I broke the original power supply cord also after a few drops on my floor. I took my soldering gun to it before I put some money down on a non-apple power adapter. They exist and are found on computer battery websites. I bought mine from a company in France.
It is a 'DLH energy'. The nice feature about the non-apple power adapter is that the 'head' (the part that connects to the computer) is easily taken off and switched with a replacement if the delicate metal band should take a beating.

  • Best place to buy iBook battery in UK

I reckon my battery needs replacing.
Can anyone recommend a good place in the UK to get one for my G3/800 iBook?
I know I know Google could give me an answer, but put in iBook Battery and it really is a bit of a mammouth trawl to find exactly what I'm looking for and then comparing prices.
    I'm happier with a recommendation.
    Thanks

Well, I did a little bit of the trawling for you, but can't offer a recommendation, since I'm not there myself. I know this is not what you had in mind, but…

  • IBook Battery?

    Hi everyone,
I just wanted to know are the iBook battery model numbers A1008 and M8403 the same battery? I have checked out on the internet and they seem to be the same, just needed some advice
    Thanks
    Danny

I've done some more checking, Danny, and it appears that Tiger Direct's listing is incorrect.
Here is the Apple Knowledge Base article on identifying the proper battery:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86797
When I Googled the identification number there, I found this webpage (among others) that identify the two numbers you asked about as interchangeable:
    http://shop.store.yahoo.com/laptopsforless/lapbatforapm3.html
So it looks like either will work. Sorry for the earlier misinformation.

  • IBook Battery Exchange

Hi my serial number on my iBook battery is:
    6C5345 VLS9YD
Can someone help me with regards to the Apple Battery Exchange, does my battery need to be replaced? I'm a bit confused

    Hi Luka,
    According to:
    https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/
your battery is not subject to the recall. Although the first few numbers of your battery serial, i.e. 6C5345, fall within the range "6C519 - 6C552"; your letters, i.e. VLS9YD don't fall within "ending with S9WA, S9WC or S9WD".
    Take care,
    Adrian
