Apple care and Lion upgrade

Hello everyone
I've been using my iMac 27" i5 for 3-4 months now, it doesn't run so smooth like it used to when I switched it on for the first time. I don't know what causes the lag but I heard that temporary files/old unused Safari files cause this lag. Is there any application which cleans your mac and reduces the lag?
Also, I was looking forward to upgrading my OS X to Lion. Will my applications save after I upgrade it? (I have Microsoft office installed on my machine)
Thanks in advance!

There are a multitude of things that might cause what you describe.  Please be more specific (where does it happen, when, what is being done..etc).
Also, I was looking forward to upgrading my OS X to Lion. Will my applications save after I upgrade it? (I have Microsoft office installed on my machine)
Applications will be moved when you insstall (if you wish).  Migration assistant does that for you.
Office 2004 is NOT supported under OS X 10.7.  Later releases of Office (2008 & 2011) are supported.  In my own case, I dumped Office and am now using Apple's iWork.

  • Apple Care and 1st generation MBP-Should you get it?

So, how many of you have got Apple Care?
I have a 1st generation MBP (I got one a few weeks after they came out).
Mine still has the whine, but I’m able to silence it with the mirror widget which I’ve been using for nearly a year. (I realize this can now be fixed, but I can’t send my computer off for repair for any length of time).
$349.00 for Apple Care is a lot of money—heck, these days you can buy a brand new PC laptop for this kind of money (albeit a bad one, but whatever).
I’m a little worried of having problems because my MBP is a first generation and it has had the problems we all have heard about on this forum (heat, whine, bad battery, warped lid, etc).
My thinking is, if I DON’T get Apple Care and I need to get my MBP fixed, and it costs MORE than $349, wouldn’t it just be worth it to get a new computer if it needs THAT kind of work? AND, who here thinks that there could possibly be a repair that would warrant $349?
How many of you people with 1st generation MBPs have had problems and actually utilized Apple Care? I know a lot of us are getting close to the ONE YEAR mark and need to make a decision if we’re going to thrown down $349 or not.
Just looking for good insight, knowledge, statistics and/or opinions on the subject to help make the best decision.
    Thanks.

I went for the Apple Care contract on my original PB17" that I got in 2003 and was glad I did. I bought the contract, oh, about 8 months into the first year's warranty.
I never had super major problems with it, but everything little thing that happened made it worthwhile.
    For example:
    (1) I started hearing "clicks" coming from my hard drive about 18 months into ownership. Apple replaced the HD with no questions asked.
    (2) I had some problems with the power adapter after about 2 1/2 years. Apple sent me a new one.
I don't know if it came to $300 worth of stuff or not, but it probably did in total. And it was reassuring.
I have a question about those extended credit card warranties though, since somebody mentioned it.
I bought my new MBP with a credit card that offers "one extra year on any product that is warrantied for three years or less".
I assume that means that I get two years now instead of 1 on my standard warranty.
But does that also mean I would get FOUR years instead of 3 if I go for the Apple Care warranty?
And how do those usually work? Like if I have to replace the LCD I shell out, what? A thousand dollars and the credit car company pays me back?

applecare doesnt cover damage unless is is caused by a manufacturing defect.

  • Apple Care and Discoloration

On October 11, 2006, I called Apple Care and they agreed to fix the discoloration that has been happening to my Macbook. I am currently a college student so giving away my computer for a week is pretty much not going to happen especially since it was during midterms. The box never got to my house [go to school in Boston, Home in New York] and so early November I called Applecare and asked for another box to be sent. They sent another and at the time I thought that Thanksgiving would be a good time to send it back but projects came up and I couldn't. Thus December break will be the time I send it back to Apple while I am home.
My question is: Since the service request was opened on October 11 and I won't be sending it back until, at the earliest December 20th, will this pose a problem for me getting my laptop back? or even it getting serviced? do service requests expire? The email that I got back in October had a link that said I could check my status online and that is still valid so I'm assuming it's valid still.

Usually when Apple sends you a box, they give you a "send by" date with it. If it's longer than that period, you should contact them first before sending it in (just to avoid any problems). As mentioned, if you have an Apple store nearby your home, you may want to bring it in there. As this is a known problem, many stores have the replacement parts in stock. If not, they can order it for you and you can hold on to your MacBook until they get it in. In many cases, if they have it in stock (or if they have to order it and get it in), they can replace it same or next day so you're not without your MacBook for any major period of time.

  • My ipad died, what should if I dont have apple care and dont live close to a store?

My ipad died with a full charge and does not even come back when plugged in. I dont have apple care and do not live close to a store. What should I do?

    Have you tried a Reset...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

iMacs take generic power cords. If it fits into the back of the iMac and an electrical socket, it'll work.
    Good luck.

  • Ever since I installed Lion my internet connection comes and goes, has anyone else had the same experience. have rung Apple Care and they have reset my connection but it is still happening

ever since I installed Lion my internet connection comes and goes....have reported this to Apple Care who have helped me reset my connection but it is still happening...cant believe it is a fault of the ISP as my Iphone does not have this problem, nor does my PC laptop...is this a fault in the new system?

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • HT4061 So my ipad is not working and I have apple care and I'm gonna get it repaired instead of repairing it could I upgrade it to a iPad mini or air and If I did would there be a discount seance I have apple care?

My apple care lasts for about another 112 days.

If your problem is covered by the warranty apple will either repair the iPad or replace it with an identical model. Apple does not accept trade ins for newer products. My suggestion would be to have your iPad repaired. If you want a different device, sell your iPad and purchase the newer model.

  • ISight, Apple Care, and the future...

Hi there. I have a few questions I am looking for answers for...
First off I am definately going to buy a MacBook Pro. I need it for the end of September but am not sure when the best time to buy is. I heard that Apple were introducing a new chip type in September but I'm not too keen using publicly untested products (think the first week of the Pro being released). Can anyone confirm this is true? Also are Apple releasing/upgrading anything in the next few months?
Secondly, can you use the in-built camera with MSN Messenger?
And lastly what are the benefits to Apple Care? It's a lot of money. Is it worth it?
    Thanks to all in advance

This first question is something no one here can answer, since only Apple employees under a nondisclosure agreement would know the answer. Also, speculation about future products is something Apple doesn't allow on their forums. But there are a lot of other forums where you can discuss this.
Secondly, can you use the in-built camera with MSN Messenger?
At least when this post was answered, it looks like the answer was no. But that could have changed since then, possibly, and there were also some suggestions in that topic for alternate MSN Messenger clients. Check for a new version of MSN messenger or any information about future plans for updates, maybe?
And lastly what are the benefits to Apple Care? It's a lot of money. Is it worth it?
That's for you to decide, but in my opinion it's worth it. It extends the hardware warranty to a total of three years, and since it's an actual Apple warranty, not a third-party warranty extension, it's very easy to get service under the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP). I find it valuable for notebook computers, which tend to have more odd issues over time due to more moving parts, etc. And it seems especially likely that one might need an extended warranty for a computer with as new technology and design as the MacBook Pro. For some details about how an APP works, see Is phone support and warranty service free?
It does not cover accidental damage. For that kind of coverage you need to look to homeowner's insurance or a computer insurance policy.
Keep in mind that while the list price of an APP for a MacBook Pro is $350, you can buy it from any Apple authorized retailer and pay significantly less, sometimes as low as $270, easily for $300.

  • Terms that void apple care with RAM upgrade

    Hi,
I want to upgrade the RAM of my macbook to at least 1gb. I have heard some conditions that may void the apple care that I bought. So, I heard that you would have to leave at least one of the original RAM cards in there for the warranty to still be considered good? Is that true? And if that is try is it bad to mix a 1gb RAM card with a 256mb or is there a difference, or is it better to just get 2 512mb? thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The RAM of a MacBook is considered a "user installable part" by Apple. You will not void your warranty by replacing the RAM. However, if you damage something in the course of changing the RAM, the repair will not be covered by the warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan. Here is Apple's article about this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25097
Apple will even give you instructions on how to change the RAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721
Because of the graphics sub-system installed in your MacBook, there is a benefit to using matched pairs of RAM. How much this will impact your user experience will depend on how you use the computer. Personally, I would recommend you keep the RAM in pairs, but others here have had no noticeable problems with unmatched capacities of RAM.

  • Stripped screw hole (upper case), apple care, and questions.

    Greeting,
    Let me explain my setup:
    First, I have a 2010 MBP, AppleCare expires on July 9, 2013.
I have upgraded the hard drive and the RAM (256GB SSD and 8GB RAM). I performed this upgrade several months ago.
Today, I noticed one of the screws on the bottom, the one on the front corner nearest the sleep indicator light. It is just spinning loosely in it's socket. Weird... I took my 00 philips (I always use the proper tools when working on my equipment) and noticed that it will barely grab... It's effectively stripped. Now, I have no idea how this just "happens". But now I'm looking at a upper case replacement (because those threads are fixed in aluminum in the upper case. Is this sort of stuff covered under apple care? Will this be attributed to user damage? If so, how much will the repair cost me?
Also, in the last two years, I have not had any repairs performed under warranty. None. My machine has been flawless since day one. I would hate to fork up $400 bucks for an upper case but this screw thing is bugging me.
Should I remove my SSD and RAM before brining the machine to apple? Should I reinstall the stock hardware? Thanks.

if you are the one who stripped the screw, Apple will not fix it free of charge.  Also, no you do not need to remove upgraded components before bringing it in for service.
