Apple Care replaced my dead, out-out-of-warranty Airport Express

Today, I became one of the hundreds (thousands??) of Airport Express users whose AE died just a few months out of warranty. I faithfully purchase Apple Care (3-year extended warranty) from Apple for every Mac I buy.
A few years ago, my graphite Airport died, and the Apple Care rep gladly replaced it due to my active Apple Care contract at that time. Today, I thought I would receive the same courtesy, thanks again to my TWO active Apple Care contracts that were in place well before I purchased the AE.
My initial Apple Care rep denied my request for a replacement AE, because, he argued, the AE was not purchased at the same time with a Mac. I explained to him the graphite Airport story above, and he dug his heels in deeper. I insisted that he send me up the food chain to a superviser, and after 4-5 min on the phone, the supervisor came on, apologized for his tech's mis-interpretation of policy, and authorized the replacement on the spot. He told me that his techs would have this clearly explained to them for future Apple Care contract holders who call up with a dead AE.
Extra info...I live near an Apple Store, and asked if I may go there and pick up the replacement. He said the decision would be up to the store management--if they had stock, etc. I said I wanted to take my chances and go up there, so he instantly made me an appointment with the genius bar within the hour. This Apple Care supervisor was a real pro. He made it clear that Apple Care covers an AE even if the AE is not purchased with a Mac. He also told me he would make a special request within my case report to the store for a stock unit. Bam! I walked in and got hooked up! Apple does take care of its customer (who might need to be a bit more persistant than need be at times) after all.
Good luck should you find yourself in the same boat I was in...By the way, I am posting this via my replacement AE on the same day, and I would swear it produces faster internet speed than the fried one!

Hi, Steve
that's one of the good points of the forum here: having a lot of trouble the past few weeks with my iMac, and now also with a brandnew minimac, I get back full with hope by reading your post here.
no, i'm not sarcastic. I think you tell us that we can get treated correctly if we insist to be treated correctly. and that is a a helpful advice.
Thanks, Thomas

  • AC Power Cord -- how not to get Apple Care replacement - is there a written policy?

I had a cord about 8 years ago that was replaced by Apple Care (it no longer charged the old Mac Powerbook).
Well, my power cord a few laptops on (my present MacBook Pro 2011) needed to be replaced (the connection at the end where the cord meets the body appeared worn -- maybe I streched it out or kinked it too much).   And so I checked here and googled other forums to see if I could take it into the Genius Bar rather than deal with Apple Care on the phone.  It appeared from the discussions here and elsewhere that Powercords were sometimes replaceable, and sometimes not.
The Genius bar refused to replace it.  I'm not upset because, as a temporary measure, where the cord was worn, I opened up the insulation to see if I could adjust the wiring to get the to work.  Tweaking it did get it to charge for another few days (work deadlines!) until I could get to the Genius Bar.  But it's probably because I opened up the insulation that they balked at replacement.
    So it goes.
But I do wish Apple Care would've covered it.  It's not super expensive but in this crummy economy, every little bit helps.
Maybe it depends upon the luck of the draw:  who you get to accept (or reject) the return?  Or is this thing warranted only in a "discretionary manner"?  Is there a written policy?
I guess I could try to go through Apple Care on the phone, but I'd have to send my old cord back from what I can tell, and then might get charged for the new one?
Anyway:  just a recommendation:  if you're cord is on the fritz, don't tamper with it to try to get it to work:  you might endanger your chances of getting an Apple Care replacement.

It really depends on how you treat the objects you own. If you kink/bend/twist the MageSafe end of the AC charger what do you expect. There are no kinks or bends or twists in my AC charger and it is 16 months old and wrapped up almost daily to be put in my bag.

  • Does apple care replace batteries?

My battery status says "replace soon" WIll apple care replace it or do I have to buy a new one? Its only been a year and a half since I got the laptop.
    Thanks!

Apple replaces batteries that they deem to be defective.
With 429 cycles, yours is probably depleted (used up) and you'll have to replace it yourself.
You'd have to go to an Apple store an ask the folks there to test it.

I have just bought apple tv which allows me to play music through airport express but when  chose to watch a movie the audio comes from the tv and does not give option listen through other speakers served through airport express. Can you help me ?

No, you cannot seperate the audio and video stream.
You can use optical audio to a sound system (I use sony sound bar) and play the audio via that.

  • 5.2 update does not send audio from video played via Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices or AirPort Express.

I just updated my Apple TV to release 5.2, which is supposed to give Apple TV the ability to "Send stereo audio from movies, TV shows, and other videos on Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs)." Problem is, this does not seem to be the case.
I have two AirPlay enabled devices:
    1) Bose SoundLink Air
    2) AirPort Express
In the Apple TV menu, I selected Settings, AirPlay, Bose SoundLink Air. I then played a video; the audio from the video played from my projector's speakers - not from the Bose speaker. I then went back to Apple TV's Settings/AirPlay and selected "Airport Express" (which connected via an aux cable to a speaker)...audio continued to play over my projector's speaker. I can, by the way, play audio on both the Bose and the speaker connected to the Airport Express if I select either of them from the AirPlay menu.
Am I doing something wrong, or is the 5.2 update not working as described?

No. But, are your speakers only connected to the AE or are they also connected to an amplifier?
You would need to use a Toslink cable to go from the Apple TV to the speakers/amp.
I don't use this or know a lot about it, but it is wildly popular, inexpensive and may be of help:

  • APPLE CARE - How do I find out the date of purchase of my mac?

Can anyone point out how do I find out the exact date of purchase of my mac? I would like to purchase the apple care extended warranty and I do not recall the exact date of purchase of my mac...just before or after a full year...? Can I look it up anywhere?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    Max

You can go to this site,
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
it tells you when your warranty expires which is 1 year after you purchased it, thats possibly the easiest way, but if you bought it from a store it may be different as it may be the date they purchased it.
With the extension program, if i purchase one now, my MBP was purchased april last year, will the extended warranty ad onto the date i purchase the extension program or from april last year when i purchased the mbp? I'm wondering because if purchase it now that effectively makes it covered for warranty for up to 4 years!

  • Home Button sticks, but out of warranty. Is this something Apple will replace, or am I out of luck until my contract is up?

I often have to push the button 3, 4, or more times until the it works.
It's been doing this for several months, but steadily getting worse.
Phone is still useable, but if it continues to get worse, it likely won't be.
I've seen other reports of this kind of behavior. Is this something Apple would replace, even though phone is no longer under warranty?
Have iPhone 4 - have not yet upgraded software to 4.3.5.

If you're out of warranty, the replacement fee is $199.  That being said, there are anectdotes of some Geniuses waiving that fee.  Never hurts to try.  Don't go with the expectation that this will happen and you may get rewarded.

  • Apple Care - Replacement promised but kept hanging

I have a Macbook Pro which is still under Apple Care. I have been plagued with problems right from the beginning like the OS hanging, keyboard not functioning, optical drive not reading discs etc. ever since I bought the machine and each time I got the defective part / s replaced under Apple Care.
The icing on the cake was when my motherboard (or the logic board as its called in these circles) crashed a couple of months back.
I have been promised a replacement and the Apple Care executive spoke to me promising that I would receive concrete instructions by mail regarding how the procedure would pan out. However its been a week and I have no mail. The executive I spoke to seems to be ALWAYS unavailable. I think I've left at least 4 - 5 voice mails since the beginning of this week but have heard nothing from them.
Any advice as to who I can contact? Probably someone higher up in the hierarchy?
Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Jason,
Yes the executive had at first told me on Friday the 3rd of September that I would receive instructions by email as to how the replacement would take place by the close of working hours the same day. Nothing came.
On Monday the 6th I received an email from a Mr. Guy Heynen but sent through the address of a Mr. Geoffrey Maraval asking me to sign a copy of a Settlement Agreement that was attached therewith. I found this to be weird since the executive I had spoken to had not told me about this requirement. I thus tried contacting her but got her voice mailbox instead. However she called back after a while and told me that this 'settlement agreement' was not applicable to me and that it had been sent erroneously. Thus I should ignore it and await further instructions. Till date nothing has come.
However a few hours back (after I started this thread) I received a call from the transport company TNT saying that they needed to pick up my computer for delivery to Apple. They have scheduled a pickup time for Monday the 13th September. What I still find weird that there is NO communication from Apple.
I just hope that my computer will end up with Apple and the latter will not tell me next week that they didn't schedule this pickup after all.
I don't know how to confirm since as I said in my earlier post, I can't get through to Apple's customer service department who work only Monday through Friday, 9 am through 6pm and I have to hold on for around 20 minutes to get through.
    What would you guys advise?

  • How many times does apple care replace a iphone

i had my phone replaced 2 times already for cracked screen and wondering if i can go again to get it a new one i have apple care!

Apple Care does not cover damage to the phone at all... AppleCare + will cover 2 incidents of damage with a $49 per incident deductible.
If Apple replaced your phone when it had a broken screen and didn't charge you for it, you were very very lucky.

  • MacBook core duo Sept. 2006  - the audio is a mystery.  Any analogue out has bass boost with bass distortion.  With digital out, by USB or Airport Express Airtunes, the frequency response is normal.  Somewhere, Apple put in an analogue bass boost.. why?!

Since new, my Macbook core duo has sent all audio to all analogue outputs with frequency distortion.  Some physical hardware or firmware in the analogue section adds a bass boost to the frequency response of the audio....  And, this boost adds bass frequency distortion to most, if not all, of the audio analogue output.
This happens for all audio sources, players, iTunes, videos, streaming audio/video, movies...  any sound source available to the Macbook.  No-one with whom I have talked about this problem, has ever heard of it.  Not elegant ideas for reducing it are to use equalisers on players and iTunes.  iTunes even has a preprogrammed "bass reduce" on its equaliser, as if it knows already that this inherent bass boost "feature" has been built into the Macbook, and cannot be defeated by the user.
The digital audio is of sufficiently high quality to play well on a very good to excellent sound-system;  so, it's a shame someone has mucked around with the frequency response of the analogue conversion, by designing the frequency distortion right into the computer.  This motherboard, (which includes the sound-section), has been replaced, along with the speakers, and everything sounds exactly the same as it was before.
To receive a flat frequency response and no frequency distortion, I listen on one receiver using Airtunes, (it doesn't matter whether or not the analogue or digital output jack is wired analogue or connected via optical cable....  the freq. response is flat);  and I listen on a high-end stereo system using an USB output port to an A/D converter, passing the analogue result using long patch-cords connected to the "line-in" jacks of the stereo.  The bummer is that most of my audio sources are not derived from iTunes...  hence, I cannot use Airtunes with Airport express for them.  I've tried using "Airfoil" without luck.  The sound becomes distorted with sibilance and other frequency anomalies.
Question:  has anyone else discovered this sound imperfection in any Mac product?  And, does anyone know if Apple is aware of it?  Finally, has anyone found an Apple fix for the problem;  or, at least, come up with better solutions than I have?
Thanks heaps for any impute and answers you may supply!!  junadowns

This might not help you a lot, but if you want a stable system, try using packages from the repo wherever possible, look at the news before you update your system and don't mess things up (like bad configuration etc.).
When it comes to performance, you won't gain much by compiling linux by yourself! Just use the linux package from [core] or if you want a bit more performance, install the ck-kernel from
    [repo-ck]
    Server = http://repo-ck.com/$arch
(this has to go to the bottom of /etc/pacman.conf)
(use that one which is best for your cpu (in your case this might be the package linux-ck-corex).
Hmmm, Linux-ck-corex doesn't even load.. I am now trying to install the generic one. Hope it works.
Edit: I will first try linux-lqx...

  • Does apple care replace a broken iphone with the current model?

I swear the best boy guy said that. My phones not broken.its an iphone. 5 still under warranty with apple care but I'm just curious. Dw apple staff and community. I have no intentions of finding a way for my phone to stop working.

You'll get the same model if they still have it in stock; this isn't the same as actually selling it.

  • ITunes Cuts Out Periodically When Using Airport Express

I have a new Airport Express (with current software) hooked up to my Bose Home Theater system. I am streaming iTunes the Stereo but it periodically cuts out. Apple Help had me reset my Extreme and 2x Expresses to Channel 6. Still cuts out periodically, but much less than before. Anyone else seen this and can offer what to do?
    Thanks,

i just bought a brand new airport express from apple and hooked it up to my brand new speakers. it also started periodically cutting out. so i followed apple's advice and tried different channels on my router. i went from 1 to 11 and still had the same problem.
then i tried decreasing my security down to WEP 40-bit. still had the same problem.
then i tried moving the airport to the middle of the room, about 6 feet away from both router and macbook pro. still the same problem. btw - i was using an optical cable from airport to speakers.
then i removed all security from my belkin router - and it worked. in the end i sent it back to apple for a refund. there's no way i can have my router running without security.
