Apple  Care Tech Tool disk indicates video ram failure

I have a MBP purchased in 3/08 - 2.4 with 256MB GeForce 8600M and the tech tool disc keeps telling me the video ram failed the test process. What does this mean and could this explain the pages taking so long to load in safari that have pictures and video? Safari on certain web site pages will sit there in a continuous loading position. The status bar will progress about 1 inch and never move again or load the page. I have to continuously keep reloading the page until it will finally complete the page. Even then half the pictures will not load. This started about a month ago, which is why I bought the apple care.
Thanks
Frank

It means the video RAM has failed. Take it in for service.

  • Won't boot from Tech Tool disk

According to the Tech Tool disc that came with AppleCare for my Macbook Pro, holding 'c' is how you boot from the disk. It does not, the machine boots right into to main disk.
I need to run disc utilities to see why my drive seems to be chattering so much. The TechTool disk isn't bootable and I've lost the system disk that came with the computer. Suggestions?

You may need to download the bootable recent version from here....

  • Video ram failure?

My 6 year old iMac/PPC running 10.5 may have died. Without warning the screen went blue, and nothing would change that. I did the Apple Hardware Test from DVD and everything passed, inc. video ram. I zapped the PRAM. I went to restart, the Apple logo and spinning wheel appeared, but then the screen went to a mottled white, and after a while black.
Any idea what the problem/solution may be?
    Thanks,
    JC

The tech seemed convinced it was a failed graphics processor, and not worth repairing. Does this seem likely/reasonable?
A failed iMac graphics chipset (processor and VRAM together) requires a total logic board replacement as the video hardware is integral with and soldered to the logic board. Therein lies the high cost of repair to which the tech alluded.
Is this a G4 or a G5 iMac? That might make a difference in the "fix or toss" decision process. The G5 is more capable that the G4 and would be worth having a little more money thrown at it.
If there is a compelling reason to keep this iMac (like mission-critical software or hardware that won't run on a newer Mac, then you have to give weight to the "fix" scenario. However, the G-sereis Macs are becoming more handicapped every day as web sites and developers focus on the Intel processor that Apple adopted nearly six years ago. You cannot upgrade the OS past 10.5.8 on a G-series, and new software seldom supports the PPC processor. Neither can you run the latest versions of Flash that is powering so many web sites.
So it comes to "what tasks do I do with this computer?" I used a nice old G4 PowerMac tower (circa 2004) well past its useful stage and just recently picked up a 27-inch iMac i7 Quad core as a refurb directly from Apple. I'm sometimes asking myself why I waited! I feel like I've stepped from a pushcart to a Ferrari.

  • How do i repair video ram failure?

My imac 11,3 has been starting and running extremely slow. TechTooldeluxe shows that the video ram failed. How can i repair this?

if it's real video ram and not shared system ram working as video ram
then the memory chips are soldered into the pcb not something a non pro even if they bought the memory chips to replace with can do with a smd soldering iron

  • Tech tool disk will not boot machine ????

greetings in my neverending issue ....
so it all began with a neverending spinny gear on a G4 ibook that would not boot. So I booted it as a terminal of my old machine and got all the stuff off of it. Then I ran the disk utitlity from my G5 n the drive of the G4 when it was a terminal and it said there were no errors.
So Now I guess I need to reinstall the software. So I got some G4 disks from a pal and tried to boot from the install/restore disk holding the C down and it just kept telling me I needed to restart my machine ... so I tried but it would not get past the spinny wheel AND i couldn't get the disk out
    so
some nice folks told me here how to get Open Firmware to eject the cd, and that worked great. Then I put the TechTool pro disk into the drive and turned it on holding down the C and I get the apple screen, and then it kind flashes and I get another apple screen where the apple is just a hair to the right of centre on the screen (I woldn't notice the change otherwise!!) and NOTHING ...
no spinnny gear below the apple
    just the apple sitting there
    no sound of disk spinning
just the fan that comes on and then turns off
    ideas?

    HI kt,
I love to offer advice to Apple users here except when I have to say something they don't want to hear. It sounds like the drive is dying and needs to be laid to rest even though you ran DU and it reported no errors, obviously something is wrong when you can't boot from the restore disk or TechToolPro. Sounds like it just doesn't want to mount any disks at all.
Try resetting the PMU... here's how: Reset PMU on iBookG4
Also, here's a PDF User Manual for the iBookG4: iBookG4 User Manual PDF
A trip to an Apple store or an Apple retailer might be the answer.

  • Booting from Tech Tool Deluxe 10.4.2

I can boot our older ibook G3 from this Cd ( which I just received with my brand new ibook)- however when I start up the G4 from the CD the screen is shades of gray- barely can barely see that it is loading correctly- however the pointer is frozen in left hand corner- can't move it, although the return key works to select the program. arrow down key also works to read report- but still pointer can't move to restart and I am forced to force quit.
    very strange
Cleaned and tried several times same results- I am wondering if perhaps this Apple Care Cd is not for 10.4.2.

I have heard that other utilities are more helpful- but as I just recieved this computer last week- from Apple and Tech Tool Deluxe was the software that shipped with my Apple Care plan- I thought it might be usable on the computer it was purchased with- silly me.
I also made a new updated disk of 3.0.3 Disk Warrior and I could not even start up from that disk- it froze and I had to force quit-
From what I have read elsewhere- Disk Warrior is compatible with 10.4.2, so there must be something else going on.

  • Video ram faiure on techtool deluxe

What does this mean when your video ram section of the test fails. I used the techtool deluxe that came with the apple care. Does this indicate a damaged video card?

    Kaliki,
If you are having issues then maybe TechTool's report is correct.

  • Problems restarting from C drive with Tech Tools 3.0.4 -OS 10.4.7

I have a TechTools CD sent to me by Apple for purchasing the protection plan. When i attempt to start up with that disk by holding C, the drive does not recognize the disk and i get the "no smoking sign" where the apple goes on the gray screen. I also have a Disk Warrior CD and it also is not recognized. I've also tried other methods of choosing both disks and neither are recognized. I've called Apple 3 times on this, and no one has been able to tell me why. They have sent me a new Tech Tools disk which still doesnt work, and now they are telling me it is a compatibility issue. What i want to know is, if it's a computability issue then is there anyone else in here who has this problem?? The lady at Apple had said she'd never heard of it so my thinking is the answer she gave me is b.s.
My mac is version 10.4.7 and my Tech Tools is version 3.0.4
    HELP PLEASE??
    iMac G5 iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    iMac G5 iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

But my question is, if this is a compatibility issue then why doesnt EVERYONE who bought my computer and got the TechTools disk from apple having the same problem?? I don't understand why they would send me a disk that was useless to me. Shouldn't someone know that this disk is supposedly incompatible??
I agree that it reduces the value of the TTD disk substantially, TrtlAtak.
Essentially the problem occurs because the disc contained in the Applecare package is often out of date, containing a system too old to start your computer. Sometimes the software itself is also out of date and should not be used until it has been updated. It depends partly on how long the particular package you receive has been sitting on the shelf, and partly on how long since a new version of the update has been provided.
The problem with the software occurs because Micromat often take a long time to update TechToolDeluxe for use with new systems. (As you have probably guessed, I'm not overly impressed with the TTD compnent of Applecare)
Remember there are TWO issues here, not just one. Firstly the CD has to have an appropriate operating system on it to start your computer. Secondly it has to have a version of TTD on it which is compatible with the OS on your computer.
In your case , the link to https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl SHOULD , however, provide you with a disc which is capable of starting up your iMac G5 iSight (and with an appropriate version of TTD for use with it).
Any chance the caps lock key was down when you attempted to startup using the c key? This will prevent bootup from CD. (Its "c" that needs to be held down , not "C").
Secondly, you could try holding down the "option" key instead while you start up, with the CD in the drive. This should allow you to select which particular drive you wish to start from (the HD or the optical drive).
Thirdly, with the Disc in the drive, you could see if it appears as a "startup disc" choice whe you go to SystemPreferences / StartupDisc. If so, select it, and restart your computer.
There are other things that can prevent your Mac startingup from a CD or DVD. If you have an "open firmware" password installed on the computer, for example, it can't be started from an optical drive. Some third party keyboards also will not let you start up in this fashion.
    Cheers

  • Video Ram Error Detected Question

Had my screen lock up and when I ran Apple Hardware Test I received a VIDEO RAM ERROR DETECTED - Error code 2NYD/1/4:2122
Scrolling is all messed up, tried reinstalling system software but nothing seems to help. Only starts after quite a few tries.
Do I need to take in for service or is there a software fix?

    Welcome to the discussions Eugene.
If I were you, I'd take it in for service. It sounds like a hardware problem that a software update won't fix.
I hope it works out for you.

  • Need to have screen checked before Apple Care expires -  have I voided it?

There is some imperfection on my iMac screen - looks like the screen is dirty, but it seems to be under the glass or something.
Anyway, want to have it looked at before Apple Care Expires in october. My question: if I've upgraded RAM myself, did I void the Apple Care?

+My question: if I've upgraded RAM myself, did I void the Apple Care?+
No you haven't - RAM is a user installable part on iMacs. If you've kept the original RAM, you could pop that back in if necessary, but since the problem is with the screen, it should not have anything to do with the RAM.
I'd make an appointment with a Genius Bar nearby to have the screen checked.

  • Video RAM fails in Tech Tool Deluxe....

    Hello again,
I reformatted my harddrive a couple days ago, and the computer is getting quicker but I KNOW it could be faster so I did a Full Diagnostics using tech tool deluxe. The first time I did it, it passed on everything. Then the next time I was browsing the Internet, I get a Kernel Panic out of the blue. I downloaded the "menu Meters" program and None of my computers resources were Anywhere from intense (1-3% tops CPU usage) So I reboot and do the Tech Tool test yet again and This time my Video ram Fails the Diagnostics. It tells me that I should Close all Applications, Check any recent hardware installs, Reinstall the OS , then call Apple care, in that order. I tested it again after unplugging my 17" LCD from my macbook pro and I passed the Test?!
I am going to call Applecare tommorow afternoon, but do you think they will fix/replace my macbook pro if it is now passing the tests? Before I install Final Cut Studio I want to make sure I don't have to worry about any other problems with my computer. Especially something as vital as V-Ram. Plus according to my friend at a techshop, the video ram supposedly has a bad sector which was randomly diagnosted during the Techtool session, because I was using a second display, and that my Video Ram will gradually get worse and worse until I will have to send it to apple either way.
I'm interested in any information you would like to post on the subject. I am going to get it fixed one way or the other, but it's nice to have some extra input on my side when I call Applecare (it will be my first time actually).
If anyone has any tips, or comments they would be appreciated,
    Thanks.

When you did a clean install of your MBP did you write zeros to the hard drive. While it probably has nothing to do with your VRAM failing its tests it is good idea to do it anyway.
As for your VRAM failing, I would reset PRAM and NVRAM…

… and the System Management Controller…

… imediately prior to clean installing (and writing zeros to the drive) a second time.

Tool Tech Video ram says failed ....hardware test shows fan problems...in reference to error 4MOT/1/0000003:HDD
Anyone else experience this...and how is the fan a problems via hardware test but tool tech shows video ram failed?
Any feedback is appreciated.Computer only 6 weeks old.......:-(

My computer listed as having failed the VRAM test as well, but when I installed the Tech Tool software, it gave me the warning that the results of the test were not yet reliable for 10.5 and it might not test correctly. I've had none of the problems the the VRAM failure listed, and assume it's just an issue with the new OS and Tech Tool not being on the same page yet. PS: I love my Mac...but don't we all?

  • Tech Tool  Deluxe cannot scan Video Ram

My Tech Tool Deluxe stalls when I scan my computer.  Macbook Pro. (Lion)

When I use the disk utility application the volume passes verification, is this contrary to Tech Tools or are they analyzing different elements of the drive?
Yes, different, DU is just basically checking part of the drive, where Directory info is stored & such.
Laptop drives are generally a lot shorter lived than regular drives, which now seem to last 3 to 5 tears.
Although these errors are present it doesn't seem to be effecting my day to day running of things at the moment...
There's a Train Wreck coming up ahead though, you can avoid it, or wait 'till it hits!
Not certain which iBook G4 you have, but here's some ideas on HD replacements...

  • VRAM failed Tech Tool deluxe and Apple hardware test

My G5 (isight) keeps 'freezing' so I ran the Tech Tool and Apple hardware test and they both say that my VRAM 'failed'.
The hardware test gave an error code2ATI/I/4: 113-xxxxx-113
How big is this to fix? I've started up from the install disk and the disc utility said the Hard Drive was fine. ny suggestions would be really useful.
    Thanks
    Andrew

Andrew, I would suggest you call Apple back and tell them that things are not ok, if you erased the drive, it should have repaired any bad sectors, something is not right. If you have Apple Care (I hope you do), insist that someone test your machine. Be sure to make a full backup before you take it in, I use SuperDuper!.
Good luck and please post back,
