"Apple Care" worth the $$$?

What are your thoughts on the “Apple Care” plan for the MacBook Pro? It strikes me as an extended warranty with somewhat limited coverage. Is the service worth the rather hefty price? Thank you.

Considering that if a flaw is found that can't be a fault of yours through accident or otherwise in the first 3 years of ownership could cost:
$150 for the battery
$500 for the logicboard
$1000 for the screen
$300 for the soundboard
$400 for the optical drive
and
$1000 for the chasis
$75 for the power supply.
and that you get 7 day a week phone tech support which could otherwise run $50 per incident, I think the cost of AppleCare is quite fair. And that you can purchase it anytime in the first year of ownership, that's also a plus.
If though you like to do it yourself, and pay full price for parts and labor, when Apple is willing to admit culpibility, don't buy AppleCare.
There are insurance programs like this one if you prefer dealing with insurance where accidents are covered:

But do they have knowledgeable tech support staff?
For some having both is valuable. Anyway, it is your choice.

  • Worth getting apple care for the Retina model?

Is it worth geting apple care for the Retina models? have read they can be dodgy...
Since I will have a one year warrenty could I just skip out on apple care untill a month before the warrenty expires as the warrenty will cover all my needs?

From the sounds of it, the Retina 2012 model is so not worth it. I assume that the 2012 retina model is almost like a testing ground to build on future retina models so there will be a lot of bugs to sort out... i assume such bugs like program capabilities with retina will be sorted out by the time the 2013 model comes around?
Have to agree completely with that.
If I was in the market for a new Mac it certainly would not be one of the Retina models. Way to expense for what you get and then there are all the problems with it.
You know I've been doing my work and having fun on computer for over 20 years and never needed a screen like the Retina to actually get things done and make some money.

  • Is Apple Care worth it for me? Retina macbook - please help!

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to Apple having just bought my first Macbook Pro Retina 13 last month and absolutely loving it!
My question is probably very similar to others but I'm finding contradicting answers everywhere - so is Apple Care worth it for me?
If it doesn't include accidental damage, and just software/hardware, then is there any need for me to purchase it in its first year? Or even 2nd year for that matter due to EU consumer laws?
What confuses me is that when I bought my macbook from the apple store, the employee told me a story of how a woman had just bought her retina macbook 2 months before hand & brought it in for repair as the screen had been damaged from her closing her macbook.. but she didn't have apple care so this cost her £800 to replace the screen - ouch!
But if she DID have applecare, how would this even be covered if it's only software & hardware and no accidental damage? Or are they just a bit more lenient when you have apple care?
    Thanks!

Apple makes a profit from AppleCare; otherwise it wouldn't offer the service. On average, buyers lose money on it. Consider whether you can afford to be self-insured for the risk. Make sure you understand that it's a warranty extension and a support contract, not insurance against loss or damage.
If you choose to buy AppleCare, don't buy it at the same time as the Mac, and don't buy it from Apple. Get it from a reputable discounter such as LA Computer anytime before the one-year factory warranty expires.
An exception to the above rule is that if you buy an Apple display together with a Mac, you have to buy AppleCare at the same time in order to get coverage for both.

No. That would not be a manufacturing defect.  Any repair costs will be bourne by you.

Is Apple TV worth the Money?

That depends entirely on what you want to use it for.
What do you think it does, and what do you want it to do?
I'd say categorically yes - because we use it a lot - someone else might be disappointed if it doesn't provide the features they expect.

    Hi adeyy,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The AppleCare FAQs has some information that you might find helpful:
    http://www.apple.com/support/products/faqs.html
Where can I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan?
Depending on the Apple product, the AppleCare Protection Plan is available at the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail Stores, and many Apple Authorized Resellers including many wireless service providers. Apple recommends that you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan in your country of residence, because each AppleCare Protection Plan has terms and conditions specific to consumers in the country or region in which the plan is offered. Please see the AppleCare Protection Plan Terms and Conditions for complete details.

  • Is apple care worth it for the iphone4s?

I was wondering who has bought Apple Care for their iphone?  Do you think it is worth it??

Well Applecare + gives you up to two replacements for breakage incidents, so I think it's worth it. For $99.00 it's worth the piece of mind. I know that Apple will do a one time replacement for iPhone 4 but something tells me that this will be coming to an end with the new plan being available for 4S. If you can swing it, it's worth it to me.

  • ISight, Apple Care, and the future...

Hi there. I have a few questions I am looking for answers for...
First off I am definately going to buy a MacBook Pro. I need it for the end of September but am not sure when the best time to buy is. I heard that Apple were introducing a new chip type in September but I'm not too keen using publicly untested products (think the first week of the Pro being released). Can anyone confirm this is true? Also are Apple releasing/upgrading anything in the next few months?
Secondly, can you use the in-built camera with MSN Messenger?
And lastly what are the benefits to Apple Care? It's a lot of money. Is it worth it?
    Thanks to all in advance

This first question is something no one here can answer, since only Apple employees under a nondisclosure agreement would know the answer. Also, speculation about future products is something Apple doesn't allow on their forums. But there are a lot of other forums where you can discuss this.
Secondly, can you use the in-built camera with MSN Messenger?
At least when this post was answered, it looks like the answer was no. But that could have changed since then, possibly, and there were also some suggestions in that topic for alternate MSN Messenger clients. Check for a new version of MSN messenger or any information about future plans for updates, maybe?
And lastly what are the benefits to Apple Care? It's a lot of money. Is it worth it?
That's for you to decide, but in my opinion it's worth it. It extends the hardware warranty to a total of three years, and since it's an actual Apple warranty, not a third-party warranty extension, it's very easy to get service under the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP). I find it valuable for notebook computers, which tend to have more odd issues over time due to more moving parts, etc. And it seems especially likely that one might need an extended warranty for a computer with as new technology and design as the MacBook Pro. For some details about how an APP works, see Is phone support and warranty service free?
It does not cover accidental damage. For that kind of coverage you need to look to homeowner's insurance or a computer insurance policy.
Keep in mind that while the list price of an APP for a MacBook Pro is $350, you can buy it from any Apple authorized retailer and pay significantly less, sometimes as low as $270, easily for $300.

  • IPod Touch Apple Care Worth While?

Does anyone think that the iPod Apple Care is worth while? Thanks!

Thanks. You could say a little more about how you've found it worthwhile?

  • Apple care worth it?

I usually don't buy extended warranties and such, but is it worthwhile to get the one yr extension via apple care (3gs)?

Personally, I don't think its worth it for several reasons:
    1) AppleCare just extends the normal warranty by a year - meaning that it only covers manufacturing defects and hardware failure due to those defects. The vast majority of problems that will happen to a mobile phone - damage due to scratches, dropping, cracked glass, etc - won't be covered.
    2) If warranties didn't make businesses money then they wouldn't be sold. Clearly, phones replaced under warranty cost Apple less than the monies they pull in from warranty sales. Based on simple probability, you will have to replace items on occasion but you will cover that cost by your savings from not buying the warranties.

  • Apple Care covered the fault of the Airplay unstable

I am a teacher from Taiwan who using iPad Air via Airplay on teaching. I
have reported the unstable situation about Airplay that I faced almost every day
on my classrooms to Apple Care since March. But every time I called, they all
denied that Airplay has any problem.
They kept convince me to believe the problem is cause by my wifi
or my apps. This went on for months, until May 22 I went to "Studio A " where I
bought my iPad Air and my Apple TV. At beginning, the clerk also said no one
has reported the airplay unstable problem to them. But I insisted to try there.
The problem showed out, then they started to admit Airplay really have some
problems. Same time I called Apple Care, and let them talk to each other then
Apple care gave me the case number 591847091 and one guy sent me a email
said he will keep follow the case. But after monthly time I waited,
he didn't give me any feedback even I sent him email still no answer. I started to
called Apple Care, now they do the same thing again. Denied the Airplay has any
unstable problem. I feel very frustrating and be fool. Now they gave me another
case number 606054625 and until yesterday June 27 they still said that I am the
only one who reported this kind of the problem to them.
But from the articles in this community, Airplay unstable situation have been
reported since Jan. why Apple Care still tried to lie to the customer. And from the
solution below. I really couldn't say it is brilliant. Because in the class I don't have
that much time to run all the resetting. Because that will spend more than 5-10
minutes. My students valuable education time will get waste. Then unstable
problems will still happen again and again.
I really feel Apple should find the better way to solve the problem, or start the
    " recall " plan.

Could be a problem with your Apple TV.

  • Stolen iPhone, Apple care on the new one?

    Hello.
I'm sure it's not posted in the good community, but I have no idea where else to post it.
I recently got my iPhone stolen with an Apple Care warranty. I know my phone is lost into the woods, but now, I just want to know if there's a possibility of me getting the Apple Care warranty of my old phone, on my new iPhone. Because I don't feel like paying 100$ for it one more time..
    Thanks.

you want to transfer your applecare agreement to another phone, correct?
You should contact AppleCare technical for that one, they might be able to transfer it, depending on exact conditions, like the purchase date of the old phone. No garantuees, though.
    Good luck

  • If i dont have apple care will the apple store fix my phone for free? i cannot use headphones because the port is messed up..

My headphone port is messed up, I cant use headphones.. Will the apple store fix it for me for free or will they charge me to do so? I dont think i have apple care?

If you dont have AppleCare but you are still within your Apple 1 year limited warranty then hardware service is free as long as the issue was not caused by physical or liquid damage.

  • I have an iPhone 4S on which I bought the Apple Care policy. The phone was broken and I was told that Apple would do nothing as it was "beyond economical repair".  Does anybody know where in the Apple Care agreement the topic of beyond economical repair?

I recently brought in a broken iPhone 4S and was told the damage was too great and therefore that is was BER and Apple would not cover the phone.  I have never dealt with this issue before and was curious as to where in the terms and conditons Apple reserves the right to not cover if the think that the phone is beyond economical repair.  When I asked clerk I was told that everybody knew that BER applied and "you would not expect an insurance cover to pay for a car if it was totalled."  I told the gentleman in that case the BER only applies as to whether I received money for car or insurance company repaired the vehicle. When I asked to see the terms that set this out nobody in the store (or the chat support agent later).  Does anybody know where this term or terms is set forth.  Also, has nobody ever questioned if it is fair to sell consumers coverage for accidental damage and not tell them that only small damage is covered and not major damage?  I am a little suprised unless I am missing something really obvious.  I have never had this issue with Asurion or with Best Buy coverage.  Thanks

You mention Apple Care, not Apple Care + which are two completely different things. Apple Care is nothing more than an additional year of standard warranty coverage. Apple Care + is what addressed accidental damage. Warranty has never covered accidental damage. What kind of damage did you do? An out of warranty replacement can be done for $199 for the iPhone 4S, and that just means you brought the phone in at least somewhat intact.
Never heard the term, but what I wrote above is what warranty is.
